Let’s Begin

As we continue our study of Matthew we will cover 2:1-12! We will be exploring the the wise men after the birth of Jesus Christ, as recorded by the apostle Matthew. We will review the events leading up to Jesus’ birth, the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies, and the reactions of those who were present. We will also contemplate the significance of Jesus’ birth and what it does for our lives as believers. As we study this passage, we will be challenged to think about why we should know Jesus and follow Him more closely as His disciples. You’ll want grab your Bible, highlighter, a pen and some paper, to record what you learn on this journey of discovery!

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying,  “Where is he who is born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east, and have come to worship him.” When King Herod heard it, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he asked them where the Christ would be born.  They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for this is written:

Through the prophet,
‘You Bethlehem, land of Judah,
    are in no way least among the princes of Judah;
for out of you shall come a governor
who shall shepherd my people, Israel.’”Micah 5:2

Then Herod secretly called the wise men, and learned from them exactly what time the star appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem, and said, “Go and search diligently for the young child. When you have found him, bring me word, so that I also may come and worship him.”
They, having heard the king, went their way; and behold, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them until it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. They came into the house and saw the young child with Mary, his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Opening their treasures, they offered to him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they went back to their own country another way.

Matthew 2:1-12 WEB

In this passage from Matthew 2:1-2 we are told about the visit of the magi to Jesus after His birth. We see in this passage, the magi, or wise men, were astrologers who came from the East following a star to Jerusalem, they were seeking the newborn king of the Jews.

Who were the Magi

So who were the magi, also known as the wise men or the Three Kings, were a group of astrologers or wise men from the East mentioned in the New Testament. Best known for their visit to Jesus after He was born as we are told in the Gospel of Matthew. We are told the magi followed a star to Jerusalem, trying to find the newborn king of the Jews.

Upon arriving in Jerusalem, they went to King Herod and asked him where the king of the Jews had been born. They were then directed to Bethlehem, when they arrived they found Jesus and worshiped Him, giving him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

There is a lot of discussion among biblical scholars about who and how many magi were. Some think that the magi were kings or members of a royal court, while others think they were scholars or priests. Some think that there were three magi, because of the three gifts that were given to Jesus. Some believe that there could have been more or less than three.

Even though there is no concrete information about the magi, they are still revered as important figures in the Christmas story. They are usually depicted as wise and devoted followers of Jesus.

Troubled

When King Herod heard it, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he asked them where the Christ would be born. Matthew 2:3-4 WEB

In Matthew 2:3-4 When Herod heard of the birth of this king, he became disturbed and called together the chief priests and scribes of the law to ask them where Christ was to be born. Most historical commentaries agree that when he called together the chief priests and scribes it was the heads of the 24 classes of priests that were created by David in 1 Chronicles 24. The scribes were those who studied and kept track of the law in the bible.

When the magi arrived in Jerusalem we can see people from all over  had heard about the birth of the king of the Jews and they were excited to find and worship him. The magi had come a long way facing significant danger so they could find the Messiah, demonstrating their faith and determination. With their arrival it emphasizes the differences between the faith of the magi and the fear and skepticism of King Herod and the religious leaders.

Herod, being upset when he heard of the birth of the king of the Jews, saw this as a potential threat to his rule. He had heard the prophecies about the coming of the Messiah because of this he was anxious to find and eliminate potential rivals to his throne.  We see King Herod’s fear and skepticism was further demonstrated when he called the chief priests and teachers of the law asking them where Christ was to be born.

God’s Road Block

With the conclusion of this chapter we see Herod was trying desperately to find the king, Jesus, knowing the prophecy that was given in Micah 5:2. Herod gave instructions to the magi to find the baby and report back to him so he could “worship him.” But God knowing all things, Psalm 139:4, gave the magi direction through a dream and warned them not to go back to Herod. God knew what was in Herods heart, knowing exactly what Herod was planning to do.

As we continue our study of Matthew we will cover 1:18-25! We will be exploring the supernatural birth of Jesus Christ, as recorded by the apostle Matthew. We will review the events leading up to Jesus’ birth, the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies, and the reactions of those who were present. We will also contemplate the significance of Jesus’ birth and what it does for our lives as believers. You’ll want grab your Bible, highlighter, a pen and some paper, to record what you learn on this journey of discovery!

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was like this: After his mother, Mary, was engaged to Joseph, before they came together, she was found pregnant by the Holy Spirit. Joseph, her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, intended to put her away secretly. But when he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take to yourself Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. She shall give birth to a son. You shall name him Jesus, for it is he who shall save his people from their sins.” Now all this has happened that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying,

“Behold, the virgin shall be with child,
and shall give birth to a son.
They shall call his name Immanuel,”
which is, being interpreted, “God with us.”Isaiah 7:14

Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took his wife to himself; and didn’t know her sexually until she had given birth to her firstborn son. He named him Jesus.

Matthew 1:18-25 WEB

Matthew 1:18-25 is a passage in the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament of the Bible that focuses on the birth of Jesus Christ. We are told, Jesus was born to the Virgin Mary, who was engaged to be married to Joseph, a carpenter. The birth of Jesus was miraculous because it was prophesied by the prophet Isaiah and completed the prophecy that a virgin would conceive a son, who would be called “Emmanuel,” which means “God with us.”

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin will conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Isaiah 7:14 WEB

The passage begins by explaining what happened before Jesus was born, Mary being engaged to Joseph was a righteous man not wanting to disgrace her publicly. So, when Mary became pregnant, Joseph became aware that the child was not his own but was conceived through the power of the Holy Spirit. Joseph was concerned by this and thought about breaking off the engagement, so an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and told him not to be afraid and take Mary as his wife. The angel explained to Joseph that the child was conceived by the Holy Spirit and would be called the Son of God. So Joseph took Mary as his wife, and did not consummate the marriage until Jesus was born.

“But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.” (Galatians 4:4-5)

Finally, this passage from Matthew 1:18-25 is a powerful and significant way to start not only the Gospel of Matthew but the Gospels, New Testament and the life of Jesus Christ. It tells how Jesus’ was born to the Virgin Mary, while she was engaged to be married to Joseph, a carpenter. The birth of Jesus fulfillment of a prophecy foretold by the prophet Isaiah completing the prophecy that a virgin would conceive and bear a son, who would be called “Emmanuel,” which means “God with us.” The passage also emphasizes how important Joseph and Mary were as the earthly parents of Jesus and what they did to give Him life.

We see Jesus’ birth and the importance of Him coming to the world as the Son of God. It is a reminder of the love and grace of God, who sent his Son to provide salvation for humanity from sin and death. When studying this passage we are instructed to follow Jesus, being His disciples, sharing the good news of His birth. Focusing the hope and salvation He gives to the world. Be inspired by the example of Joseph and Mary and copy their faithfulness to the call of God. Always seek to follow Jesus more closely as one of His followers.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the opportunity you have given us to learn more about You. Guide us in the direction that You want us to go so to gain a closer understanding of who You, while gaining a unbreakable relationship like never before. Give us understand to see, understand, and grasp the message that You have for us. In Jesus Name Amen

Let’s Begin

Matthew 1:1-17 is the beginning of the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament of the Bible. This passage lists the genealogy of Jesus Christ, starting with Abraham and going all the way down to Joseph, the husband of Mary, who was the mother of Jesus.

The passage begins by stating that Jesus was the son of David and the son of Abraham. Abraham was the father of Isaac, who was the father of Jacob, who was the father of Judah and his brothers. Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah, and Perez was the father of Hezron. Hezron was the father of Ram, and Ram was the father of Amminadab. Amminadab was the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon was the father of Salmon. Salmon was the father of Boaz, and Boaz was the father of Obed. Obed was the father of Jesse, and Jesse was the father of David, who was the king of Israel.

David was the father of Solomon, who was the father of Rehoboam. Rehoboam was the father of Abijah, and Abijah was the father of Asa. Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat was the father of Joram. Joram was the father of Uzziah, and Uzziah was the father of Jotham. Jotham was the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz was the father of Hezekiah. Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh was the father of Amon. Amon was the father of Josiah, and Josiah was the father of Jehoiachin and his brothers.

Jehoiachin was exiled to Babylon, and after the exile, his descendants included Shealtiel, who was the father of Zerubbabel. Zerubbabel was the father of Abiud, and Abiud was the father of Eliakim. Eliakim was the father of Azor, and Azor was the father of Zadok. Zadok was the father of Achim, and Achim was the father of Eliud. Eliud was the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar was the father of Matthan. Matthan was the father of Jacob, and Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Mary was the mother of Jesus, who is called the Christ.

The passage concludes by stating that Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary through the power of the Holy Spirit, fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah 7:14 that a virgin would conceive and bear a son. This son, Jesus, would be called “Emmanuel,” which means “God with us.” The passage emphasizes that Jesus’ genealogy is important because it shows that He is the promised Messiah, the savior of the world, who was foretold by the prophets and is a descendant of Abraham and David.

A little more

Matthew 1:2 is part of the genealogy of Jesus Christ as recorded in the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament of the Bible. The verse reads, “Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers.” This verse establishes the line of descent from Abraham to Jesus through Isaac, Jacob, and Judah.

Abraham is considered the father of the Jewish people, Genesis 17:1-27, and is revered as a great patriarch in Judaism, and Christianity. He is described in the Bible as the father of faith and is credited with establishing the covenant between God and the descendants of Abraham, which is central to the Abrahamic religions. Abraham is also mentioned in the New Testament as an ancestor of Jesus, and his faith and obedience to God are held up as an example for Christians to follow.

Isaac is the son of Abraham and his wife, Sarah, and is considered the son of promise in the Bible. According to the book of Genesis, God promised Abraham that he would have a son through Sarah, even though they were old and childless. Isaac was born when Abraham was 100 years old and Sarah was 90, and he became the heir of the promise of God to Abraham. Isaac is also an important figure in the Abrahamic religions, and he is revered as a patriarch and a symbol of faith and obedience.

Jacob is the son of Isaac and the grandson of Abraham. He is also known as Israel, and his twelve sons became the twelve tribes of Israel. Jacob is known for his cunning and deception, as well as for his faith in God. He is also an important figure in the Abrahamic religions, and his descendants are considered to be the chosen people of God.

Judah was one of the twelve sons of Jacob, Genesis 49:1-27, and the ancestor of the tribe of Judah. He is also an important figure in the Bible and is revered as a patriarch and a leader of the Jewish people. According to the book of Genesis, Judah was the one who suggested that Joseph, his brother, be sold into slavery in Egypt, but he later repented of his actions and pleaded for Joseph’s release. Judah is also mentioned in the New Testament as an ancestor of Jesus.

In Matthew 1:2, the genealogy of Jesus is traced through Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Judah, showing that Jesus is a descendant of Abraham and a member of the tribe of Judah. This is important because it establishes Jesus as the promised Messiah, the savior of the world, who was foretold by the prophets and is a fulfillment of the covenant between God and Abraham. The genealogy of Jesus is also important because it shows that Jesus is a human being, born of the lineage of Abraham and David, and therefore fully human and fully divine.

family tree picture

Further more, the genealogy of Jesus recorded in Matthew 1:1-17 is an important and significant passage in the Gospel of Matthew. It traces the line of descent from Abraham, the father of the Jewish people, down to Joseph, the husband of Mary and the legal father of Jesus. This genealogy establishes Jesus as a descendant of Abraham and a member of the tribe of Judah, fulfilling the promises of God to Abraham and the prophecies of the prophets. It also shows that Jesus is a human being, born of the lineage of Abraham and David, and therefore fully human and fully divine.

The historical and genealogical significance in this passage also highlights the importance of the family line of Jesus and the fulfillment of God’s plan for the salvation of humanity. It also focuses on the faithfulness of God for keeping His promises keeping his plan for the world with the birth of Jesus Christ as the savior of the world.

Finally, the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1:1-17 is a message that speaks to the divine nature of Jesus and how important His birth is in the salvation of humanity. It is a reminder of God’s devotion and His lasting love. He invites us to trust Him knowing we can follow Him as our savior and Lord.
