1 John 1:5–2:2

This is the message which we have heard from him and announce to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him and walk in the darkness, we lie and don’t tell the truth. But if we walk in the light as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son, cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we haven’t sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

My little children, I write these things to you so that you may not sin. If anyone sins, we have a Counselor with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous. And he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the whole world.

These verses explain the relationship between God’s holiness, human sin, and Christ’s ongoing work. God is pure light, leaving no room for hidden darkness. Genuine fellowship with Him requires honesty, not denial of sin. Believers are called to walk in the light through confession and repentance. When we fail, John offers assurance: Jesus Christ is our advocate. His sacrifice fully satisfies God’s justice, providing forgiveness and restoring fellowship. This passage balances truth and grace—calling for integrity while grounding hope in Christ’s continual intercession and cleansing power.
