Written by Former Senate Majority Leader and Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell was reportedly found unconscious at his Washington, DC, home on June 14 after a possible heart attack, according to multiple media reports citing emergency services dispatch audio. McConnell, 84, is serving his seventh six-year term representing Kentucky and has experienced several health scares in recent years. His office confirmed that he was hospitalized on June 14 but has released few details about his condition. According to Senate records, the Republican senator has not voted since June 11.
On July 1, multiple outlets, including The New York Post, TMZ, and The New Republic, reported that emergency dispatch audio from the morning of June 14 referred to an “unconscious” person at McConnell’s Washington, DC, residence shortly before 9 AM local time. According to the reported audio, emergency personnel later discussed “CPR in progress” for a “cardiac arrest.” When asked about the reports, McConnell’s office declined to answer questions regarding his condition, whether he remains hospitalized or the authenticity of the dispatcher audio. Instead, spokesperson Stephanie Penn referred to the office’s previous statement. “Senator McConnell is still working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters as he continues his recovery. However, he will not be voting this week,” Penn said in an email.
The statement was originally issued on June 22, when the senator’s office announced that he would not return for Senate votes before lawmakers left Washington for a break. Recent Health Concerns McConnell has faced multiple health issues in recent years. In February, he spent eight days in the hospital after experiencing what his office described as “flu-like symptoms.” In October 2025, he tripped and fell while being questioned by an activist, adding to a series of highly publicized falls and freezing episodes that have raised concerns about his health. McConnell, the longest-serving party leader in US Senate history, was first elected to the Senate in 1984 and stepped down from his Republican leadership role in 2024. Senate Republicans are now led by South Dakota Sen. John Thune. Meanwhile, Republican Rep. Andy Barr is running against former Kentucky state Rep. Charles Booker, a Democrat, in the race to succeed McConnell next year.
