Written by “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.
In these verses we can see that Jesus prepared His disciples for the reality that following Him will not always be accepted by the world. He reminded them they should not be surprised when they are rejected, opposed, or even persecuted because the world first rejected Him. When we are followers of Christ it means we belong to Him rather than needing to conform to the values of the world. When we encounter criticism or rejection because of our faith, and we will, we can be encouraged, knowing that Christ experienced the same suffering, remained sinless, and still walks with us through it.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, protect me from deception and ground me in your truth. Help so that I do not believe everything that makes me feel good. Help me to always be able to discern what is truth and what is deceptive. In Jesus Name Amen.
