Matthew 16:13–18

bible book of Matthew

13 Now when Jesus came into the parts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?”

14 They said, “Some say John the Baptizer, some, Elijah, and others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

17 Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 I also tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my assembly, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.

Jesus asks His disciples who they believe He truly is. Peter’s confession; “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God”, reveals faith given by God, not human insight. Jesus responds by affirming that this truth is the foundation of the Church. The “rock” is not human strength, but the revealed identity of Christ. Built on this confession, the Church stands secure against opposition. This passage highlights the power of revealed truth, the centrality of Christ, and God’s promise that His redemptive work will endure.
