Truth Sets Us Free

Set Free

You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

Scripture: John 8:31–32

“Jesus therefore said to those Jews who had believed him, “If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples.  You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

Truth is not something that is restrictive it is liberating; knowing Christ’s truth frees us from deception and fear. At times people will misunderstand Truth as restrictive, but Jesus describes and shows us that it as liberating. Truth will free us from deception, fear, and bondage, not because it changes circumstances, but because it reveals reality to see it how God sees it.

Aligned: Many times truth gets resisted because it confronts assumptions and can challenge comfort. Freedom is never found in by put our fingers in ears and screaming NA NA NA. Having true freedom comes from living aligned with God’s design.

Free: When we walk in truth, we are no longer controlled by every cultural wave or emotional reaction. Truth will stabilize our identity and clarifies purpose. Truth will remind us who God is and who we are in Him.

Peace: When we have become free through truth it also produces peace. When we trust God’s truth, we no longer need to defend ourselves or be afraid because we are wrong. We rest in Christ, confident that His Word leads to life.

  • Where has God’s truth brought freedom into your life?
  • Where might you still be resisting it?

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, lead me deeper into Your truth and free me from anything that binds my thinking. Give clarity that comes from and not foggy smoke that comes from this world. In Jesus Name Amen

Testing What We Hear

Scripture: 1 John 4:1

Devotional Thought:
Not everything we are told that sounds spiritual is from God; having discernment requires us to test every message that is against or seems like it is against Scripture.“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.” (1 John 4:1)

Having discernment is not cynicism, but it is careful. The Bible does not tell us to accept everything we hear simply because it sounds spiritual or even if it is well-intentioned. Instead, God told us to test what we hear against scripture.

Being able to test something requires a standard and that standard we have is God’s Word. The Bible does not shift with culture no matter how loud it is, nor does it bend to personal preference. The Bible reveals God’s truth clearly and consistently, this makes it possible to evaluate teachings, opinions, and spiritual claims reliably.

In a culture that has been confused, there are many ideas that have borrowed Christian language while subtly redefining biblical truth. They have messages that seem similar and may emphasize love while the whole time will dismiss holiness, or compassion while completely ignoring repentance. Having discernment asks the question: Does this align with the full counsel of Scripture?

The Bereans were praised not for blindly accepting teaching, but for examining Scripture daily to confirm what they heard. True spiritual maturity includes the humility to question and the discipline to search God’s Word do you know what you are being told.

Testing requires the guidance from the Holy Spirit. Your discernment is both learned and cultivated. As believers grow in Scripture and prayer, their ability to recognize truth sharpens.

Ask yourself: Am I filtering what I hear through God’s Word or through emotion, culture, or convenience? Discernment protects your faith and preserves your peace.

Noise Is Not the Same as Truth

There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.

Scripture: Proverbs 14:12

Have you ever noticed that the loudest voices are not always the wisest ones; “the squeaky wheel gets the grease.” Truth is something that often times speaks quietly but carries lasting weight. Currently We live in one of the louder moments in human history, with social media, email, news, and so much more. Everybodies opinions, no matter right or wrong, are shared instantly, arguments spread rapidly, and emotions are amplified constantly.

With this kind of environment, it’s easy to mistake popularity, internet influencers, or the loudest voice for wisdom and overwhelming volume for truth. But Scripture warns us that what seems right is not always what is right. “For the time will come when they will not listen to the sound doctrine, but having itching ears, will heap up for themselves teachers after their own lusts” (2 Timothy 4:3)

Noise naturally creates urgency. “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.” (1 Corinthians 13:1)The noise makes us feel like we need to react quickly, take sides, and form opinions before we have fully figured out what the truth is. God’s wisdom, however, shows us to slow down, listen carefully, and seek understanding. Coming to the truth does not demand instant agreement; truth will withstand thoughtful total examination.

The enemy is the master of confusion and great at hiding and holding up outright lies. Being able to emphasize distorted truth and wrap it in appealing language which is usually more dangerous than a clear falsehood, look around you’ll see it. This is why having discernment is so essential, not every persuasive message leads to life.

When we try to hear God’s voice it often seems quieter than the surrounding noise, but it is always consistent with His Word and character. Elijah discovered that God was not in the wind, earthquake, or fire, but in a still, small voice. (1 Kings 19:12) Discernment grows when we create space to hear God above the noise.

Ask yourself today:

  • What voices dominate my attention?
  • Are they leading you toward peace, humility, and obedience—or anxiety, anger, and division?

When we are choosing truth in a loud culture it requires intentional silence before God. When we quiet all of the competing voices, it allows us to become better listeners. Not only to Scripture, but also the Spirit who applies truth to our lives.

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, help me recognize Your voice amid the all of the noise. Help me to see You in all of the distractions all of the yelling and show those things are words that are not from you. In Jesus Name Amen

Truth Begins With God

Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.

Scripture: John 17:17 “Sanctify them in your truth. Your word is truth.”

In a culture overflowing with opinions, interpretations, and competing narratives, one of the most important questions a believer can ask is: Where does truth actually begin? Jesus answers this clearly; truth begins with God and is revealed through His Word.

Truth is not something that comes by a majority vote, some cultural trend, a social media post or personal feelings. Opinions can shift and perspective can change, God’s truth always remains constant. This is why Jesus, when praying for His disciples, did not ask that they were removed from the world, but that they be sanctified, set apart, and covered by truth. God’s Word should not be used to merely inform us; but rather as an instruction manual to form us.

There are many believers today that feel confused, not because truth is unavailable, but because they are surrounded by so many voices that proclaim authority. News feeds, social media, podcasts, and influencers constantly offer alternate interpretations of reality, you know there opinions. Remember volume does not equal validity and truth. If we allow every voice equal authority in our lives our discernment weakens and we allow ourselves to fall for anything.

When we focus on the Bible and Jesus it anchors us. It gives us clarity when our emotions cloud judgment and the stability when culture shifts. When we have not commitmented ourselves to God’s Word, even the most sincere believers can drift into confusion, even adopting ideas that sound reasonable but quietly contradict God’s truth.

Truth also has a refining effect. Jesus prayed that truth would sanctify meaning it would shape how we think, live, and respond. God’s truth corrects us, comforts us, and calls us to growth. This is not always easy, but it is always loving.

As you begin each week, reflect honestly:

  • What voices are shaping your understanding of truth the most?
  • Are you starting with God’s Word, or turning to it only after other influences have spoken?
  • Where do you most often look for truth before turning to Scripture?

Refinement begins when we choose Scripture as our foundation, not some backup plan. When our truth begins with God, all of the overwhelming confusion loses its grip. Truth is not created by culture or consensus; truth originates with God and is revealed through His Word.

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, align my heart with Your truth and teach me to trust Your Word above every other voice. Be the light when everything seems to dark to move. Guide my steps through every rock path in front of me. In Jesus Name Amen.

Who were the Bereans

The Bereans were a group of Jews in the city of Berea (in Macedonia, modern-day northern Greece) who are mentioned in Acts 17:10–12 and they’re remembered for something very specific: their commitment to examining Scripture carefully.

Where They Appear in the Bible

Acts 17:10–11 (ESV):

“The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue. Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.”

Why the Bereans Matter

The Bereans are praised for three key qualities that make them a biblical model for discernment especially relevant in an age of confusion and noise.

1. They Were Eager, Not Defensive

They received the word with eagerness. They didn’t reject Paul out of suspicion, nor did they accept his teaching blindly. They were open but careful.

👉 Discernment is not cynicism; it’s humble attentiveness.

2. They Examined the Scriptures Daily

The Bereans tested Paul’s teaching against Scripture. Even though Paul was an apostle, they still verified what he said.

👉 Truth is not validated by the messenger’s reputation but by making sure it was aligned with God’s Word.

This is why “being a Berean” has become shorthand in the church for checking teaching against Scripture.

3. They Practiced Ongoing Discernment

They examined the Scriptures daily, not occasionally. Discernment wasn’t a one-time act it was a lifestyle.

👉 Discernment grows through consistent engagement with Scripture, not momentary effort.

The Result

Acts 17:12:

“Many of them therefore believed…”

Their careful study did not lead to skepticism it led to faith.

Hope That Carries Us Forward

Scripture: Romans 8:18  For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

Paul boldly declares that our present suffering cannot compare to future glory. Christian perspective gives suffering a context and hope, being able to see an attainable horizon. No pain is wasted, and no trial is final. Eternal hope doesn’t deny hardship it gives it an expiration date. You are a character in God’s redemptive story restoration, and glory.

Hope is not wishful thinking it is confident expectation. When we live with eternity in view, hardship no longer defines us; hope does. God is moving history toward restoration, and His promises will not fail. He told us: For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. (Jeremiah 29:11) And then reassured us that He will not let us down: But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. (Isaiah 40:31)

How does future glory give you strength to endure what you’re facing right now?

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, I will fix my eyes on what is to come. Strengthen me with the promise of Your glory and carry me forward in faith. Be the light in the dark and the guide for every step I take. In Jesus Name Amen

Setting the Mind Above the Moment

Scripture: Colossians 3:2
“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

What we surround ourselves with determines how we live. Living a Biblical perspective is a discipline. Living this way requires intentional focus on Christ when worries demand our attention. Our mind must be trained to return to truth even when anxiety pulls it toward fear. When our thoughts are focused on heaven, our hearts become steadier. Fixing our minds on eternal truth doesn’t remove us from the world, it steadies us within it. Perspective shapes peace.

Our thoughts quietly shape our lives. What we dwell on determines our peace, our patience, and our perspective. Paul urges believers to set their minds on things above not as an escape from reality, but as an anchor within it. Christian perspective is a discipline. It takes an intentional focus on Christ when worries demand our attention. Our mind must be trained to return to truth when anxiety pulls it toward fear. When our thoughts rise toward heaven, our hearts become steadier and less movable on earth.

Peace does not always come come from changing our circumstances, but from changing what we are focusing.

Living for What Lasts

Scripture: Matthew 6:19–20

Living for eternity does not mean that we start ignoring our earthly responsibilities, it means that we allow eternal values to shape how we live today. Our time, relationships, generosity, and obedience all become sacred investments when we offer them to God. Jesus challenges us to consider where we are investing our lives. “Storing up Earthly treasures” promise and give us false security, but they do not endure. What we build for ourselves fades away; what we build with God endures.

Having an eternal perspective asks us to measure success not by accumulation, but by impact that lasts beyond this life. This is not saying that we earn our way to heaven, but when we have that relationship with Him we become lead by His example becoming more like Him.

Every choice we make is shaping something. Focusing on a “Jesus” like perspective will help us ask better questions: Is this drawing me closer to God? Is this building His Kingdom? Will this matter when eternity begins? Jesus warned us not to invest our lives in things that fade, rust, or fail. Having a Christian perspective reorders our priorities and asks one simple question: Will this matter forever? What we build for God outlasts what we build for ourselves. But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.” (2 Timothy 2:19)

Say What:
What are you currently investing in, and will it still matter in eternity?

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, help me align my priorities with Your Kingdom. Show me how to live for what will last and invest my life wisely for eternity. In Jesus Name Amen

Strength Renewed, Not Exhausted

Scripture: Isaiah 40:31

Thoughts to Ponder:
Waiting on the Lord does not mean we’re standing still, it just means trusting God while He strengthens us. Waiting on Him is not passively standing down; it is a form of active trust. We are choosing to rely on God’s strength instead of endlessly drawing from reserves that are empty. An eternal perspective reminds us that burnout often comes from trying to sustain what only God can supply. Physical and mental exhaustion often comes when we live as if everything depends on us. Those who hope in Him exchange weakness for strength.

Tiredness, fatigue and exhaustion are not a signs of failure they are signals of humanity. When we read Isaiah he reminds us that even strong people can grow tired, but those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength. Having a perspective that leads us to trust God teaches us that we were never meant to sustain life by our own power alone. God never shames us for being tired. Instead He invites us to exchange our weakness for His strength.

Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved. Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved. (Psalm 55:22) When we lift our eyes beyond what immediately demands our attention and trust God’s eternal sufficiency, we’ll discover a complete and full endurance that does not come from effort alone, but from grace.

When Temporary Pain Feels Heavy

Scripture: Psalm 34:19
“Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.”

Pain has a way of making everything feel permanent. When the suffering lingers, we can convince ourselves that this is how life will always be. The bible never pretends our pain is small. In Psalm 34 it openly acknowledges that the righteous face many afflictions. Yet it anchors that truth in an even greater promise: the Lord delivers.Eternal perspective reminds us that suffering is real, but it is not final. God sees every tear, every sleepless night, every prayer whispered through exhaustion. While deliverance from or afflictions may not always arrive on our timeline, it always arrives on God’s. He is never indifferent, never absent, and never unaware.

The Bible never minimizes our suffering, but highlights God’s faithfulness. Pain feels heavy when it stands alone, but when you approach it with the Bible it becomes bearable because it is carried in the hands of a faithful God. Deliverance may not be immediate, but it is always promised. When we hold pain in isolation, it feels unbearable. When we hold it before God, it becomes shared and therefore lighter. God does not ask us to minimize our hurt; He invites us to bring it honestly into His presence.

Hope grows when we remember that suffering has an expiration date, but God’s faithfulness does not.

What We See vs. What Is Real

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 4:18

“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen…”

Devotional Thought:
If we look at ourselves we can see that a lot of our stress comes from treating temporary things as though they were permanent. Paul reminds us that what we see is real, but not final. When we practice faith we train our eyes to see beyond the moment and trust the unseen work of God.

We all know how life constantly pulls our attention toward what we can see, measure, and feel. Bills arrive. Headlines shout. Social Media whines. Pain demands attention. None of these things are imaginary, but the bible lets us know they are not final. Paul emphasizes that believers need to fix their eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, because what is seen is temporary, while what is unseen is eternal.

Having an relationship with God does not deny reality; it reframes it. When we focus only on the things that we see, the pressure grows heavier and hope grows dim. But when we put our total trust on God and lift our eyes beyond the moment, we will begin seeing that God is always working in ways we do not immediately perceive. The unseen work of God; His presence, His promises, His power is just as real as what troubles us, and more permanent.

Faith is choosing to believe that God is active even when everything you see tells you something different. It is trusting that today’s struggle does not define tomorrow.

Fear Loses Its Grip When God Is First

Scripture: Matthew 6:33

“Seek first the kingdom of God…”

Devotion:
When God is set first, fear can never be in charge. Fear will always thrive when our priorities are misplaced. Jesus highlighted that when we seek God’s Kingdom first, everything else will fall into its proper place. Peace always follow proper order, “For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.” (James 3:16)

What practical change could you make to seek God first when fear begins to take control?

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, as I come to the end of this week, I quiet my heart before You. I admit that fear has found places in my thoughts, decisions, and emotions. I have worried about tomorrow, carried burdens I was never meant to carry, and tried to control what only You can hold. Tonight, I pause and I remember:

  • You are with me.
  • You have not abandoned me.
  • You have not lost control.

Lord, shine Your light on every fear I’ve hidden, ignored, or normalized.
Reveal where fear has replaced trust and where anxiety has shaped my choices. I don’t want to live driven by fear I want to live and thrive being led by faith. Lord soften my heart.

  • Give me the courage to respond, not resist.
  • If You call me forward, help and give me the strength to step forward.
  • If You call me to surrender, help me to let go.

Jesus, I put You first again today. Align my heart with Your Kingdom. I choose to come ready and to lay my fears at Your feet and trust You with what frightens me, with what I cannot see and with my life. In Jesus Name Amen

Our faith does not always or need to wait for fear to disappear. Faith can move while fear is still present. Choosing to trust God, faith, even when emotions lag behind, is an act of obedience. Having courage in the face of fear is not the absence of fear; it is trust and obedience in spite of it.

Fear Grows When We Try to Control Tomorrow

Much of our fear comes from trying to live in and sway a future we were never meant to control. Jesus invites us back to focus on today where grace is already provided. When we surrender and give tomorrow to God, today becomes manageable again.

Stepping Into the New Year With God; Part 3

Lamentations 3:22–23 — “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”

III. Renewing Our Minds and Hearts for the New Year


A new year is not just about new goals, but a renewed inner life.

Scripture:

Just because it is a new year it does not mean that it automatically brings transformation; true renewal begins in the heart and mind. Romans 12:2 teaches that true change will come when our thinking is transformed by God’s truth. If we have not renewed our hearts and minds, we are destined to repeat the same cycles, habits, and struggles year after year no matter how good our intentions.

The prayer David spoke in Psalm 51 shows us where renewal begins: “Create in me a clean heart, O God.” Having a renewed heart leads us to renewed desires, renewed priorities, and renewed obedience. Through Christ, we become new creations, but daily renewal requires intentional daily surrender.

What we allow into our minds shapes our spiritual direction. God’s Word replaces lies with truth, fear with faith, and confusion with clarity. When we pray our hearts align with God’s will, not just our own wishes. When we commit to spiritual disciplines, Scripture, prayer, worship, we open ourselves to the transforming work of the Holy Spirit.

With a new year ahead, God is not merely calling us to do more, but to become more like Christ. When we renew our hearts and minds, our lives will naturally begin to reflect His will.

Lamentations 3:22–23 — “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”

II. Releasing the Weight of the Old Year

You’ll never be able to fully embrace what God is doing next while holding tightly to what He is asking you to release.

Scripture:

God did not intended for us to carry the weight of yesterday into tomorrow. We are told in Isaiah 43 not to dwell on former things because God is doing something new. However, even as believers we can enter the new year still bound by regret, bitterness, failure, or unresolved pain. Hebrews 12 calls these things “weights” that slow us down in our spiritual race.

There are things that we carry are things like sin that needs repentance, grief that needs healing, and others could be disappointments that must be surrendered to God. We need to try consider it the way the apostle Paul understood it when he said, “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead.” When it says “Forgetting” it does not mean pretending the past never happened; it means refusing to let it define who we are or letting it control us.

God cannot fill hands that are already full. To receive new joy, new vision, and new strength, we must first release what no longer belongs to us. Forgiveness, of others and of ourselves, is often the doorway to freedom. As we step into the new year, we lay down the burdens of the old and trust God with what we cannot change.

Thoughts to Ponder:

  • Some things from last year were seasons, not assignments
  • God often requires surrender before advancement
  • Forgiveness frees us to move forward

Application:

  • Release regret, bitterness, failure, and fear
  • Invite God to heal unresolved wounds

I. Remembering God’s Faithfulness in the Past Year


Before we rush into a new year, God calls us to pause and remember what He has done.

Scripture:

As we are getting ready to enter a new year, if we consider what Scripture says we are invited to look back before we move forward. Psalm 103 reminds us, “Forget not all His benefits.” Remembering is not nostalgia it is however an act of faith. We read that when Israel forgot what God had done, they lost perspective and drifted into fear and disobedience. There is no difference for us, forgetting God’s faithfulness causes us to underestimate His power for what lies ahead.

Over the past year there may have been joy, loss, growth, or disappointment. Yet if we look into every season, we can see God was present. He sustained you when you were tired, guided you when you were unsure, and protected you in ways you may never fully realize. We can see that even our unanswered prayers and closed doors can later be seen as evidence of God’s loving guidance.

When we remember God’s faithfulness we fuel gratitude and build confidence. By doing this we are reminded that the same God who carried us through everything we have been through will walk with us into the next. Before we rush ahead with resolutions and plans, we should pause to say, “Lord, Thank You.” Gratitude anchors our hearts and prepares us to trust God again.
