“I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.  As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

In these verses we, as believers, are strongly warned not to abandon the true Gospel of Jesus Christ for a different message that fits our point of view. At this time there were some teaching ideas that distorted the Gospel of grace, and Paul makes it clear that God’s truth cannot be altered to satisfy people or the current culture. It emphasizes that even if someone is claiming spiritual authority, including an angel, preached a different gospel, Paul says it must be rejected. This warning reminds us that not everything presented as being “Christian” is necessarily biblical.

Paul also highlights our desire for our need for human approval. He gives everyone a challenge to think about, “For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God?” We need to understand that this question remains important for Christians today. There are times that humans easily change our beliefs, compromise biblical convictions, or remain silent because we fear rejection. Being a follower of Christ requires discernment and courage. We’ve been told to test what we hear against Scripture, remaining faithful to the Gospel, and always seeking God’s approval above the applause of people.

Reading the Bible, What the Bible Says

Reading the Bible is essential for every Christian because it is the primary way God reveals His character, truth, wisdom, and will to humanity. The Bible is not simply a historical book or a collection of religious writings, it is the living Word of God that teaches, corrects, strengthens, and transforms those who seek Him. Through Scripture, believers grow spiritually, gain wisdom, resist deception, and develop a deeper relationship with God.

The Bible itself declares its divine importance in 2 Timothy 3:16–17:

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”

This verse explains that Scripture equips believers for every area of life. It teaches truth, exposes wrong thinking, corrects behavior, and trains Christians to live righteously. Without regular time in God’s Word, believers can become spiritually weak, confused, or influenced more by culture than by truth.

Reading the Bible also helps believers know God personally. In John 1:1, Jesus is called “the Word,” showing the deep connection between Christ and Scripture. As people read the Bible, they learn about God’s love, holiness, mercy, justice, and salvation. The more believers understand Scripture, the deeper their relationship with God becomes.

The Bible provides guidance and direction for life. Psalms 119:105 says:

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

Life is filled with difficult choices, temptations, and uncertainty. God’s Word acts as spiritual light, helping believers walk wisely and avoid dangerous paths. Without biblical guidance, people often rely only on emotions, public opinion, or worldly advice.

Reading Scripture also protects believers from deception. In a world filled with conflicting ideas and false teachings, Christians need discernment. Acts 17:11 praises the Bereans because they searched the Scriptures daily to test what they were hearing. God desires His people to know truth deeply so they are not easily misled.

The Bible strengthens faith during trials and hardships. Romans 10:17 teaches:

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

Reading Scripture reminds believers of God’s promises, faithfulness, and power. During seasons of fear, grief, confusion, or suffering, God’s Word provides comfort, encouragement, and hope. Many Psalms reveal how God meets people in their deepest struggles and renews their strength.

The Bible also transforms the heart and mind. Romans 12:2 teaches believers to be transformed by the renewing of their minds. Regular reading of Scripture changes how Christians think, speak, and live. God uses His Word to shape attitudes, build wisdom, and produce spiritual maturity.

Finally, reading the Bible draws believers closer to eternal truth. Heaven and earth may change, but God’s Word remains forever. Jesus said in Matthew 24:35:

“Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”

For Christians, reading the Bible is not merely a religious habit, it is spiritual nourishment, guidance, protection, wisdom, and a daily connection with God Himself.

Why reading the Bible is important, What he Science says

Reading regularly, especially deep, focused reading like studying the Bible, has significant scientific benefits for memory, cognition, emotional regulation, and long-term brain health. Neuroscience and cognitive psychology both show that consistent reading strengthens neural pathways, improves comprehension, enhances attention span, and supports mental resilience throughout life.

When a person reads consistently, the brain actively engages multiple regions at once. Reading involves language processing, memory retrieval, visualization, reasoning, and emotional interpretation. Brain imaging studies have shown that reading activates areas associated with comprehension, critical thinking, and long-term memory formation. This repeated mental activity strengthens neural connections through a process called neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to reorganize and build stronger communication pathways through repeated use.

Memory improves because reading requires the brain to retain information, connect ideas, and recall details over time. When someone studies Scripture regularly, they repeatedly revisit themes, names, teachings, and concepts, which strengthens both short-term and long-term memory systems. Repetition is one of the strongest scientifically supported methods for memory retention. The act of reading, reflecting, journaling, and recalling verses reinforces encoding in the hippocampus, the brain region heavily involved in memory consolidation.

Reading also improves cognitive endurance and concentration. Modern digital culture trains the brain toward rapid scrolling, short attention spans, and fragmented thinking. Deep reading slows the mind and increases sustained attention. This helps improve executive functioning skills such as focus, decision-making, reasoning, and impulse control. Reading complex material like the Bible encourages analytical thinking because readers compare passages, interpret meaning, understand symbolism, and reflect on moral and philosophical ideas.

Scientific research has also linked regular reading to reduced cognitive decline with aging. Studies on lifelong readers suggest that consistent mental stimulation may help preserve cognitive function and build what scientists call cognitive reserve, the brain’s resilience against age-related decline and diseases affecting memory. Mentally engaging activities, including reading and memorization, may help delay symptoms associated with dementia and other degenerative cognitive conditions.

Reading spiritually meaningful material can also reduce stress and improve emotional regulation. Research has shown that focused reading can lower stress levels by slowing heart rate and reducing mental tension. Scripture reading, prayer, and meditation combine cognitive engagement with emotional reflection, which may support calmer thinking and emotional stability. Lower stress levels benefit memory because chronic stress and elevated cortisol can negatively affect the hippocampus and impair memory formation.

Another important scientific benefit is vocabulary and language development. Reading regularly exposes the brain to broader language structures, improving verbal fluency, comprehension, communication skills, and abstract thinking. This strengthens overall intellectual flexibility and learning capacity.

Memorization of Scripture specifically exercises active recall, which is one of the most effective learning strategies identified in educational psychology. Recalling verses without looking strengthens retrieval pathways in the brain, making future recall faster and more accurate. Over time, this repeated mental exercise improves overall memory performance beyond just the memorized material itself.

From both a scientific and spiritual perspective, regular Bible reading develops the mind through repetition, reflection, focus, and emotional engagement. It trains attention, strengthens memory, encourages critical thinking, supports emotional health, and helps maintain cognitive sharpness over time. Consistency matters most, the brain grows stronger through repeated mental exercise just as muscles grow stronger through repeated physical training.

Overcoming Division in the Church: A Call for Unity

Division within the church is one of the enemy’s greatest tools because it weakens unity, damages witness, and distracts believers from the mission of Christ. I personally believe that all of the denominations and interpretations are a disease that the devil created to separate Gods children. If you look around it works pretty good. Jesus warned in Matthew 12:25 that “every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand.” When bitterness, gossip, jealousy, pride, and unforgiveness take root, the body of Christ begins to fracture from within.

Galatians 5:15 gives another sobering warning: “But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.” Many times division begins quietly through offense, competition, misunderstandings, ego, or personal agendas. Instead of building one another up, people begin tearing each other down. What should be a place of healing becomes a battlefield of opinions, power struggles, and wounded hearts.

Yet God sees beyond outward appearances. Jeremiah 17:10 says, “I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins.” God scrutinizes and examines our motives, pride, selfish ambition, and hidden bitterness that fuel division. Sometimes the greatest issue is not theology or disagreement, it is the condition of the heart. 2 Timothy 4:3-4 “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.” 

The solution to a divided church begins with repentance, humility, and returning to the love of Christ. Ephesians 4:2–3 calls believers to walk“with all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love, being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Healing comes when believers choose forgiveness over offense, prayer over gossip, humility over pride, and truth spoken in love over destructive conflict. Unity does not mean everyone agrees on everything, it means Christ remains greater than our personal preferences.

A healthy church is not built by perfect people but by fully surrendered people who allow God to transform their hearts. When the church chooses love, accountability, grace, and biblical truth, division will completely loose its power.

Faith Under Pressure

Pip: Drink of Jesus is a site that treats ancient Scripture the way a good contractor treats load-bearing walls — you don’t move them just because the room looks dated.

Mara: Today we’re covering three stretches of territory from Drink of Jesus: God as a steady refuge when life turns chaotic, the inner discipline of staying faithful and guarding your heart, and what the church owes its people when it comes to unity and leadership. Let’s start with what it means to find solid ground when everything around you is shaking.

God as Refuge When the Ground Shakes

Pip: The question this territory is really asking is: when the world feels genuinely unstable, what does a believer actually stand on?

Mara: “God: Your Unshakeable Refuge in Troubling Times” goes straight at that with Psalm 46, and the setup is stark: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.”

Pip: So the upshot is that the scale of the chaos — mountains, seas, the whole thing — is almost beside the point. The post is making a structural claim, not just an emotional one.

Mara: Exactly. And it lands on a pointed self-diagnostic: “If God is truly my refuge, why do I sometimes run to fear before I run to Him?” That’s the real tension the post is sitting with.

Pip: “Finding Stability in Chaotic Times” picks up the same thread and carries it practically — the foundation holds, but you have to keep choosing to stand on it.

Mara: Both posts are pointing at the same discipline: trust isn’t a feeling you arrive at, it’s a direction you keep choosing, especially when the ground is moving.

Pip: The practical weight of that is real — the post is speaking to the person who is tired, unseen, and genuinely wondering if any of it registers.

Mara: And it answers directly: eternity will reveal what earth concealed. The measure isn’t today’s visible impact; it’s what God has promised permanently.

Pip: “Guard Your Heart: Protecting Your Inner Life” runs alongside that and narrows the focus inward — because you can’t stay steadfast if what’s filling you is pulling you the wrong direction.

Mara: That post draws on Proverbs 4:23 and makes a practical point: guarding your heart doesn’t mean closing off, it means filtering emotions and influences through truth. Your thoughts, relationships, and habits all pass through it.

Pip: So the two posts are really one argument — keep going, and watch what you’re letting in while you do.

Mara: From endurance and inner vigilance, the next question is what that looks like when the community around you is the source of the wound.

When the Church Divides or the Shepherd Fails

Pip: This segment sits with a harder problem — not external chaos, but fracture from within, and leaders who were supposed to protect people and didn’t.

Mara: “Unity in the Body of Christ: Breaking Down Barriers” opens with a warning from Matthew 12:25: “every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand.” The post names the quiet entry points — offense, ego, competition — and argues that often the core issue isn’t theology, it’s the condition of the heart.

Pip: Division as a heart problem, not a doctrine problem. That’s a harder diagnosis to argue with.

Mara: “Shepherds Who Neglect the Flock” takes the accountability side of that and grounds it in Ezekiel 34 — God’s direct rebuke of leaders who fed themselves while the vulnerable went uncared for. The post is clear that Scripture does not excuse that failure.

Confronting Church Hurt: Seeking Truth & Healing

One of the deepest forms of church hurt happens when abuse, misconduct, or harmful behavior is ignored, minimized, or covered up—especially when trusted leaders or respected members are involved. The pain becomes even heavier when those seeking help are silenced, doubted, or made to feel responsible for protecting the reputation of the church. But Scripture never teaches believers to hide evil for the sake of appearances. God calls His people to walk in truth, justice, and accountability.

The Bible repeatedly warns against leaders who abuse their authority. In Ezekiel 34, God rebuked shepherds who failed to protect the flock and instead used people for their own benefit. Jesus also condemned religious leaders who looked righteous outwardly while hiding corruption inwardly (Matthew 23:27–28). Ephesians 5:11 says, “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.” God does not bless secrecy that protects sin while harming people.

When trusted people fail us, confusion and grief can shake our faith deeply. Yet human failure does not change God’s character. Healthy biblical leadership welcomes accountability, protects the vulnerable, seeks repentance, and pursues restoration through truth—not denial. Healing begins when darkness is brought into the light, wise counsel is sought, boundaries are established, and justice is taken seriously.

God cares deeply for the wounded. Psalm 34:18 reminds us that “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.” Even when people fail, the Good Shepherd never abandons His sheep.

States That Allow Bible in the Classroom

Texas public schools will now require students to read Bible passages and stories as part of the latest conservative push to expand the role of religion in public education—a move bound to escalate wrangling over the separation of church and state doctrine derived from the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment.

The Texas State Board of Education, which is controlled by Republicans, approved a reading list on Friday that would mean millions of public school children must read excerpts from the Book of Job and New Testament passages, alongside traditional literary works like Charles Dickens. The list will be phased in beginning in the 2030-31 school year.

The decision places Texas at the center of an ongoing national debate over religion in public schools. While no state requires devotional Bible study in public school classrooms, four states—Texas, Utah, Louisiana and Oklahoma—have adopted or proposed policies that significantly expand the Bible’s presence in schools.

Texas

Texas approved a required statewide reading list that includes Bible passages ranging from the story of Jonah to selections from Genesis, Psalms and Lamentations. Supporters say the Bible is being taught as an essential work of literature and history rather than as religious doctrine. Critics, however, contend the curriculum gives Christianity preferential treatment over other religions and reduces local educators’ ability to choose instructional materials. “This is unique,” Antero Garcia, president of the National Council of Teachers of English and a Stanford University professor, told the Associated Press.

“I don’t know of any other state with a mandatory reading list that includes religious texts.” The vote builds on earlier Texas initiatives, including the Bluebonnet Learning curriculum, which offers districts financial incentives to adopt reading lessons containing biblical references, and a 2025 law requiring the Ten Commandments to be displayed in every public school classroom. Another 2025 law, SB 11, allows school districts to adopt a voluntary period for prayer and reading religious texts, including the Bible.

Utah

Utah lawmakers approved legislation requiring selected Bible passages to be incorporated into public school social studies standards beginning with the 2028-29 school year. The law directs educators to use the Bible when teaching subjects such as American history, civics and Western civilization, while emphasizing that instruction should be academic rather than devotional. Supporters argue the Bible is foundational to understanding Western history, while opponents say the law risks favoring Christianity in public education.

Louisiana

Louisiana took a different approach by requiring the Ten Commandments to be displayed in every public school classroom. The law does not require students to read the Bible or participate in Bible study, but supporters have argued the displays reflect the historical foundations of American law. The measure remains the subject of ongoing constitutional litigation.

Oklahoma

Oklahoma drew national attention in 2024 after then-state Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters directed public schools to incorporate the Bible into instruction for grades five through 12. Walters said the Bible was an “indispensable historical and cultural touchstone” for understanding the nation’s founding documents and history. The directive prompted multiple lawsuits, and subsequent state leaders declined to continue enforcing the policy, leaving Oklahoma without a statewide Bible mandate.

What Does the Supreme Court Say About Teaching the Bible in School?

The U.S. Supreme Court has long distinguished between teaching religion and teaching about religion. In Abington School District v. Schempp (1963), the court struck down school-sponsored Bible readings but also emphasized that objective instruction about the Bible’s role in history, civilization, ethics and literature is constitutionally permissible. Justice Tom Clark wrote that “the Bible is worthy of study for its literary and historic qualities,” adding that such study, “when presented objectively as part of a secular program of education,” is consistent with the First Amendment. That distinction remains central to current legal debates. States defending Bible-related curriculum changes argue they are teaching the Bible for its historical and literary significance rather than promoting religious belief. Civil liberties organizations counter that some recent policies cross the constitutional line by advancing Christianity over other faiths.

What Are Released-Time Bible Programs?

Released-time programs allow public school students, with parental permission, to leave campus during the school day to receive religious instruction from private organizations. The classes are voluntary, privately funded and conducted off school property. The practice was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in Zorach v. Clauson (1952), which found that schools may accommodate religious instruction provided they do not sponsor or fund it. More than a dozen states now require school districts to accommodate released-time religious instruction if requested, and organizations such as LifeWise Academy have rapidly expanded Bible education programs under those laws.

Why It Matters The Texas vote represents the most expansive effort yet to make biblical texts a required part of public school instruction and is likely to intensify legal challenges over the separation of church and state. Whether other states follow Texas could shape the next chapter of the national debate over religion’s place in public education—and potentially invite another review by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Trump’s religious liberty report calls for building ‘bridges’ between church and state

A draft final report from President Trump’s Religious Liberty Commission released Friday calls for “building bridges between church and state,” a reversal of a long-standing U.S. legal principle.  “Americans must know their rights and stand with courage when those rights are challenged,” the commission’s report read. “To preserve this freedom, we must build bridges, not walls, between the City of God and the City of Man. If we do so, we will pass on a free and prosperous nation to the next generation,” it continues. The argument is a stark reversal of the legal principle that calls for the separation of church and state.

The phrase “separation of church and state” does not explicitly appear in the Constitution, but the Constitution states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R), who is a vice chair on the president’s commission, argued on Friday that the political left has used the phrase “to batter and hammer people of faith for the last 70 to 80 years.”  “This report will speak very clearly that Americans understand that they can not be attacked by that phrase any longer,” Patrick said, speaking alongside Trump, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and members of the commission.  In addition to calling for “bridges” between church and state, the commission’s report also calls for the scrapping of the tax code provision known as the Johnson Amendment, which prohibits nonprofit groups, including religious organizations, from endorsing or opposing political candidates. 

Trump created his Religious Liberty Commission last year, appointing Patrick and Dr. Ben Carson to serve as vice chairs. Phil McGraw was also tapped by the president to be a part of the commission.

If you’re new to Bible reading — or even if you’re not — you might feel completely bewildered by the array of Bible versions, translations, and editions available today.  Whether you’re browsing the Bible section at your local bookstore or comparing Bible Gateway’s own library (which features dozens of English translations, let alone the huge variety of other languages), you might feel overwhelmed by the alphabet soup of abbreviations in front of you. You’re not alone — Bible decision fatigue is real. In fact, it’s not uncommon for shoppers to leave stores empty handed rather than risk buying the “wrong” Bible version. Here’s the good news: with very few exceptions, there is no “wrong” version of the Good News.

But depending on what you’re looking for, there are better or worse places for you to start. This guide will help you sort through the major Bible versions available today and make a choice that suits your personal circumstances. You’ll also learn a bit about the different translation types, or philosophies, and a crash course in their histories. When you’re done, you’ll have no trouble telling your NIV from your ESV, your NRSVUE from your NABRE, and your KJV from your NKJV. Why Are There So Many Bible Versions?

Why are there so many Bible versions, anyway?

How different can they really be? If you’ve ever compared a few translations side by side, you know the answer: they can differ greatly. Sometimes it’s hard to believe both passages come from the same source text!  The books of the Bible were written over hundreds of years in various locations around the Mediterranean Sea and the Middle East. Most of the Old Testament was written in Hebrew (with a few passages in Aramaic) centuries before the birth of Jesus, while the latest books in the New Testament were written in Greek decades after his death and resurrection. 

Needless to say, a lot has changed in the world since then. Rendering words written thousands of years ago and thousands of miles away — in very different languages and contexts than our own — intelligible to a modern English reader is an enormous challenge. There are a lot of good reasons for the variety of different ways an original passage from the Bible can be translated. Here are just a few of them:

No One-to-One Correlation

Words in one language seldom have exact matches in other languages. There are often shades of meaning lost in translation — all the more so when separated by thousands of years.  Common examples include the Hebrew word ruach — which can be translated either “breath” or “wind” — and of course the Greek logos, which can variously mean “word,” “reason,” “thought,” or “speech.”

No Punctuation

Unlike modern English, most ancient languages have little to no punctuation to clarify where one phrase or sentence ends and another begins. To make matters worse, early Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek manuscripts used all capital letters, and often didn’t include spaces between words. Hebrew didn’t even include vowels!

Idioms

One of the greatest challenges trying to translate texts across languages and cultures is figuring out what to do with idioms, or common cultural phrases that mean something very different from what they appear to in the literal sense.  Do you convert them to the target language as closely as possible, so readers know exactly what images the original writers used, even if they don’t understand what was originally meant by them? Or do you try to get the point across by adjusting the words to something more meaningful to us today?

Imagine someone in Thailand — or for that matter, on Mars — two or three thousand years from now trying to make sense of phrases like “break a leg” or “throw the baby out with the bathwater” and you can start to get a sense of the problem.  These sorts of phrases abound in both Hebrew and Greek. Many of them have now entered our own lexicon — so much so that we don’t even realize they’re from the Bible — but others, like the many uses of covering or uncovering one’s feet — remain contested.

Times, Genres, and Styles

The books of the Bible were written by many hands over hundreds of years. Some books were carefully crafted by scholars, while others are the live-spoken testimony of holy men and women. Some of them are histories, some are poetry, some are letters, or collections of sayings, or prophecies. Often a single book will include several of these genres within it. 

The fact that God chose so many hands to write his Word is part of what makes reading the Bible such a vibrant, dynamic, and engaging experience. When translating such a wonderful variety of voices, it’s possible to purposely or accidentally smooth them all out into a single, more consistent one. 

There are reasons to do so — such as helping to highlight the thematic and narrative throughlines of the entirety of Scripture. But you also run the risk of losing the freshness and particular feeling of the individuals God selected and inspired to deliver his message.

Discipline, instruction, and regulation is not about control; it is about guidance. God’s discipline toward His children is always motivated by love and a desire to help us grow in righteousness. Dads are called to follow this example.

If we discipline and it is driven by anger, we take the chance that it can wound a child’s spirit. However if our discipline is guided by love and wisdom, it helps shape character and teach valuable life lessons. Children will always need boundaries, accountability, and instruction, but they also need encouragement, love, and understanding.

A godly father will seek to correct behavior while preserving the relationship. He will teach truth, model forgiveness, and point his children toward God’s standards. Through using loving discipline, dads help prepare their children to walk in wisdom and integrity becoming the best godly young adults that you can raise.

The word “theology” comes from two Greek words that combined mean “the study of God.” Christian theology is simply an attempt to understand God as He is revealed in the Bible. No theology will ever fully explain God and His ways because God is infinitely and eternally higher than we are. Therefore, any attempt to describe Him will fall short (Romans 11:33-36). However, God does want us to know Him insofar as we are able, and theology is the art and science of knowing what we can know and understand about God in an organized and understandable manner. Some people try to avoid theology because they believe it is divisive.

Properly understood, though, theology is uniting. Proper, biblical theology is a good thing; it is the teaching of God’s Word (2 Timothy 3:16-17). The study of theology, then, is nothing more than digging into God’s Word to discover what He has revealed about Himself. When we do this, we come to know Him as Creator of all things, Sustainer of all things, and Judge of all things. He is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and end of all things. When Moses asked who was sending him to Pharaoh, God replied “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14). The name I AM indicates personality. God has a name, even as He has given names to others.

The name I AM stands for a free, purposeful, self-sufficient personality. God is not an ethereal force or a cosmic energy. He is the almighty, self-existing, self-determining Being with a mind and a will—the “personal” God who has revealed Himself to humanity through His Word, and through His Son, Jesus Christ. To study theology is to get to know God in order that we may glorify Him through our love and obedience. Notice the progression here: we must get to know Him before we can love Him, and we must love Him before we can desire to obey Him.

As a byproduct, our lives are immeasurably enriched by the comfort and hope He imparts to those who know, love, and obey Him. Poor theology and a superficial, inaccurate understanding of God will only make our lives worse instead of bringing the comfort and hope we long for. Knowing about God is crucially important. We are cruel to ourselves if we try to live in this world without knowing about God. The world is a painful place, and life in it is disappointing and unpleasant. Reject theology and you doom yourself to life with no sense of direction. Without theology, we waste our lives and lose our souls.

A Father Who Stands Strong in Faith

The world continually challenges fathers to compromise their values and convictions. God calls fathers to stand firm in faith and lead their families with courage.

“Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love.” 1 Corinthians 16:13-14

Being a strong father does not mean you will never struggle. But strong fathers are those who remain faithful in the midst of struggle. Life can bring difficulties, disappointments, and unexpected challenges, but faith gives fathers the strength to persevere.

Children need to see a dad who trusts God when circumstances are uncertain, chaotic and messed up. They need to see prayer during difficult seasons, faith during trials, and hope during moments of discouragement. These faithful examples teach children where true strength comes from.

If you are standing firm in faith it does not mean you are being perfect. It means continually turning to God for strength, guidance, and courage. A father’s unwavering faith can become an anchor for his entire family.

As Father’s Day approaches, remember that the greatest gift you can offer your family is a life fully surrendered to Jesus Christ.

A Father Who Loves Like God

A Dad’s love can leave a lasting imprint on a child’s heart. God calls dads to reflect His unconditional love through patience, grace, and compassion.

“Do everything in love.” 1 Corinthians 16:14

Your unconditional love you have is one of the greatest gifts a father can offer his children. Yes, providing for their physical needs is important, children also need affection, encouragement, and emotional support. They need to know that they are valued, treasured, prized and cherished.

We have the best example, God demonstrates perfect love toward us. He forgives, disciplines, guides, comforts, and remains faithful even though we fail. Dads are called to reflect this same love within their homes. This means speaking words that build up rather than tear down, listening carefully, and extending grace when mistakes occur. A dad is doing his best to raise an adult that is ready for what life has to throw at them. 

A loving dad will create an environment where their children feel secure and accepted. Through that love, children will gain a better understanding of God’s heart toward them. God has given you an opportunity to care, lead and love one of His children.

Before a dad can effectively lead his family, he must first learn to follow God himself. A Dad’s walk with the Lord becomes the foundation upon which his family builds its faith.

“But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15

We can see here that unequivocally; Joshua boldly declared that his household would serve the Lord. This fearless statement was not merely a family goal; it was a personal commitment. Before Joshua could lead others, he had already decided whom he would follow. Godly fatherhood begins by personally surrendering to God.

Children will learn far more from what they see than from what they hear. When a dad prays, reads Scripture, attends worship, and seeks God’s wisdom, they demonstrate a living faith. A dad’s example becomes the first picture his children have of spiritual leadership.

There is no dad who leads perfectly, but every single dad can choose daily to walk closely with God. The strongest leadership begins on one’s knees before the Lord.

When Silence Protects the Wrong

One of the deepest forms of church hurt happens when abuse, misconduct, or harmful behavior is ignored, minimized, or covered up—especially when trusted leaders or respected members are involved. The pain becomes even heavier when those seeking help are silenced, doubted, or made to feel responsible for protecting the reputation of the church. But Scripture never teaches believers to hide evil for the sake of appearances. God calls His people to walk in truth, justice, and accountability.

The Bible repeatedly warns against leaders who abuse their authority. In Ezekiel 34, God rebuked shepherds who failed to protect the flock and instead used people for their own benefit. Jesus also condemned religious leaders who looked righteous outwardly while hiding corruption inwardly (Matthew 23:27–28). Ephesians 5:11 says, “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.” God does not bless secrecy that protects sin while harming people.

When trusted people fail us, confusion and grief can shake our faith deeply. Yet human failure does not change God’s character. Healthy biblical leadership welcomes accountability, protects the vulnerable, seeks repentance, and pursues restoration through truth—not denial. Healing begins when darkness is brought into the light, wise counsel is sought, boundaries are established, and justice is taken seriously.

God cares deeply for the wounded. Psalm 34:18 reminds us that “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.” Even when people fail, the Good Shepherd never abandons His sheep.

Every age feels unstable in its own way. Ours moves fast, argues loudly, and often treats old truths as if they have expired. Many believers wonder how to speak clearly in a culture that is suspicious of certainty and impatient with conviction. Yet the answer is not to rewrite the message. It is to remember what God has already said and to trust that He still does what He has always done through the good news of Jesus Christ.

A Changing Culture Does Not Change Christ

Methods may change, technologies may multiply, and public opinion may turn, but the Lord does not move with the tide. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). The foundation of the faith is not a trend, a personality, or a strategy. It is the living Christ, crucified and risen. That is why Scripture remains steady when the world is unsettled. “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever” (Isaiah 40:8). A church that believes this will not panic when the culture shifts. It will listen carefully, speak wisely, and keep its footing because truth is not decided by majority vote.

The Gospel Still Meets the Deepest Need

The world changes, but the human heart does not. People still carry guilt, fear death, wrestle with shame, and search for meaning. No amount of progress can remove sin or reconcile a sinner to God. That is why the gospel is never out of date. “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16). The gospel is not mere advice for better living. It is the announcement that sinners can be forgiven through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He did not offer one path among many.

He said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). That exclusivity troubles many people, but it is also our hope. If Christ alone saves, then salvation rests on His finished work, not on our efforts. And where this message is believed, real change happens. “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17). The gospel still works because God still saves, restores, and transforms.

Stand Firm in Truth Without Losing Tenderness

Some believers are tempted to soften the message so that it sounds less offensive. Others are tempted to speak the truth harshly and call it faithfulness. Scripture leaves no room for either mistake. We are to be clear about truth and careful about tone. “But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you. But respond with gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15). That kind of witness requires a renewed mind.

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2). We will not speak with conviction if we are shaped more by headlines, entertainment, and online outrage than by Scripture. Christians do not help the world by echoing its confusion. We help by bringing light, patience, and the words of life. Faithfulness also means speaking when it would be easier to stay silent. “Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke, and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction” (2 Timothy 4:2).

There is courage in that verse, but there is also patience. The Lord’s servants are not called to win arguments at any cost. We are called to tell the truth as those who know they have received mercy.

Ordinary Faithfulness Has Real Power

Many people want a dramatic answer for a difficult time, but God often works through steady obedience. The gospel spreads not only through pulpits and platforms, but through homes, workplaces, friendships, and local churches. A calm, holy, Bible-shaped life is not small. It is a witness.

  • Begin each day in Scripture. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105).
  • Obey what God has said. “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves” (James 1:22).
  • Speak openly about Christ. People do not need vague spirituality; they need the Savior who died for sinners and rose again.
  • Stay committed to the church. Believers need worship, sound teaching, prayer, fellowship, and accountability. Isolation weakens courage.
  • Let your life support your words. “In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).

None of these steps are flashy. All of them are powerful when joined to the work of the Holy Spirit. God has always used ordinary believers who trust His Word, pray, repent, serve, and refuse to hide the name of Jesus.

Hope for a Restless World

It is easy to become discouraged when evil is celebrated and truth is treated as a problem. But despair is not faith. The risen Christ is still building His church, still saving the lost, and still keeping His people. The gospel does not depend on cultural approval to remain true or powerful. So this is not the time to retreat from the message that gives life.

It is the time to believe it more deeply, live it more visibly, and share it more confidently. The Lord who saves has not grown weak, and His promises have not worn out. He still says, “Behold, I make all things new” (Revelation 21:5). In a changing world, that is the kind of hope that does not fade.

When we sow selfishness, we reap emptiness; when we sow obedience, kindness, and faithfulness, we reap spiritual blessings and growth. This verse is both a warning and an encouragement, calling believers to live intentionally and trust that God sees every seed planted in faith.

Guarding Your Heart: The Slow Influence of Daily Choices

Every day, something is discipling you, even when you do not realize it. The music, conversations, entertainment, habits, friendships, and thoughts you allow into your life are either drawing you closer to God or slowly reshaping your heart away from Him.

Heart is used in Scripture as the most comprehensive term for the authentic person. It is the part of our being where we desire, deliberate, and decide. It has been described as “the place of conscious and decisive spiritual activity,” “the comprehensive term for a person as a whole; his feelings, desires, passions, thought, understanding and will,” and “the center of a person. The place to which God turns.”

When we read the Bible we can see it makes it clear that people are not shaped overnight. The majority of spiritual decline does not happen suddenly; it happens slowly through repeated exposure, tiny little compromises, and repeated influences that quietly mold the heart over time. That is why Scripture repeatedly warns us to guard what we allow into our minds, hearts, and lives. Proverbs 4:23 says: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

Pay attention to the urgency that this verse emphasizes: “Above all else.” God is stressing that the condition of our heart determines the direction of our lives. When we see the “heart” in Scripture it represents the center of who we are, our thoughts, desires, emotions, motives, and will. Whatever enters the heart eventually comes out in behavior, speech, and decisions. Jesus confirmed this truth in Luke 6:45: “For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”

What we fill ourselves with will eventually flow from us.

This is why the enemy often works subtly, delicately and almost undetectable. Satan does not always begin with obvious rebellion. Most of the time he starts with influence, distraction, compromise, and normalization, sound familiar. He knows that repeated exposure can slowly shape a person without them even noticing.Currently the world is constantly feeding people messages about identity, success, pleasure, anger, lust, greed, pride, selfishness, and fear. There is social media, entertainment, music, conversations, advertisements, and culture, people are being discipled every single day. Romans 12:2 warns: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

The world has patterns. Culture has patterns. Sin has patterns. If believers are not intentional, they will slowly begin to absorb the values around them instead of the truth of God. What we watch matters. Psalm 101:3 says: “I will set before my eyes no vile thing.” Jesus said in Matthew 6:22: “The eye is the lamp of the body.”

The things we surround ourselves with and what we continually look at affect our spirit. Entertainment may overall seem harmless at first, but repeated exposure to impurity, violence, mockery, vulgarity, greed, and darkness can slowly desensitize the heart. What once bothered us no longer convicts us. What once seemed wrong slowly becomes normal. The danger is not always immediate corruption; often the danger is gradual dullness toward God.

What we read matters.

Colossians 2:8 says: “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy.” Not every voice deserves authority or influence in your life. Not every idea, intention or suggestion is truth. The books we consume, the teachings we follow, and the opinions we constantly absorb shape the way we think. Proverbs 23:7 declares: “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.”

Our thoughts will eventually become actions. Actions eventually become habits. Habits eventually shape our character. This is why the enemy fights so hard to influence our minds. If he can influence what we think, he can influence the direction we go. What we listen to matters. Words carry influence. Conversations carry influence. Music carries influence. Proverbs 18:21 says: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.”

Our Surroundings affect us

Many people underestimate how environments affect them spiritually. Constant negativity, gossip, anger, complaining, crude humor, and toxic speech slowly poison the atmosphere of the heart. Ephesians 4:29 warns: “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up.”

The Bible teaches that people become what they are surrounding themselves with  consistently. Who we spend time with matters. 1 Corinthians 15:33 says: “Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’”

Our relationships shape us more than we realize.

Attitudes spread. Habits spread. Mindsets spread. Fear spreads. Bitterness spreads. Compromise spreads. The people that are closest to us tend to influence our direction more than we understand. Proverbs 13:20 says: “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.”

If we constantly surround ourselves with rebellion can we still expect to remain spiritually strong. Eventually what surrounds you begins to affect you. This does not mean believers should isolate themselves from unbelievers. Jesus spent time with sinners. But there is a difference between reaching people and being shaped by them. Christians are called to influence the world, not be consumed by it.

Our Habits is who we are

The Bible also teaches that repeated habits shape identity. Galatians 6:7 says: “A man reaps what he sows.” Every day we are sowing seeds into our hearts. Some sow purity, prayer, worship, truth, wisdom, and discipline. Others sow compromise, lust, anger, bitterness, selfishness, and worldly obsession. Eventually every seed produces a harvest.

Small compromises become strongholds when they are continually fed. James 1:14–15 says “Each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin.” Sin will grow when it is thought about, entertained, and considered . What starts as simple curiosity can become captivity if left unchecked.

A impenetrable safeguard

This is why Scripture repeatedly calls believers to guard their minds and renew their hearts through God’s Word. Philippians 4:8 says: “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

God is not trying to remove joy, delight, or enjoyment from people’s lives. He is trying to protect our hearts from chaos, impairment and destruction. The enemy wants people numb, distracted, spiritually weak, and emotionally bound. But God wants believers spiritually alive, discerning, holy, wise, and free.

Transformation begins when people intentionally change what they feed their spirit.

  • If you constantly feed fear, fear grows.
  •  If you constantly feed anger, anger grows.
  •  If you constantly feed lust, lust grows.
  • If you constantly feed bitterness, bitterness grows.

But if you feed your life with God’s truth, prayer, worship, wisdom, and godly influence, spiritual strength begins to grow. Psalm 1:1–3 paints this picture beautifully: “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked… but whose delight is in the law of the Lord.”

Notice the progression. The righteous person is careful about:

  • where they walk,
  • where they stand,
  • where they sit,
  • and what they meditate on.

Because God understands that environments shape people.

Today the Lord is calling believers to become spiritually aware again. To stop carelessly allowing anything into their hearts. To stop normalizing what weakens conviction. To stop feeding what destroys peace, purity, wisdom, and spiritual sensitivity.

  • Guard your heart.
  • Guard your mind.
  • Guard your influences.
  • Guard your atmosphere.

Because what repeatedly enters your life will eventually shape who you become.

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, Help me guard my heart and mind with wisdom and discernment. Reveal the influences, habits, thoughts, and environments that are pulling me away from Your truth. Give me strength to remove anything that weakens my spirit or dulls my conviction. Renew my mind through Your Word and shape my life through Your presence. Surround me with godly influence, holy wisdom, and spiritual clarity. Teach me to think on what is pure, true, and pleasing to You. Let my life reflect Your character in every area. In Jesus Name Amen.

Division within the church is one of the enemy’s greatest tools because it weakens unity, damages witness, and distracts believers from the mission of Christ. I personally believe that all of the denominations and interpretations are a disease that the devil created to separate Gods children. If you look around it works pretty good. Jesus warned in Matthew 12:25 that “every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand.” When bitterness, gossip, jealousy, pride, and unforgiveness take root, the body of Christ begins to fracture from within.

Galatians 5:15 gives another sobering warning: “But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.” Many times division begins quietly through offense, competition, misunderstandings, ego, or personal agendas. Instead of building one another up, people begin tearing each other down. What should be a place of healing becomes a battlefield of opinions, power struggles, and wounded hearts.

Yet God sees beyond outward appearances. Jeremiah 17:10 says, “I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins.” God scrutinizes and examines our motives, pride, selfish ambition, and hidden bitterness that fuel division. Sometimes the greatest issue is not theology or disagreement, it is the condition of the heart. 2 Timothy 4:3-4 “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.” 

The solution to a divided church begins with repentance, humility, and returning to the love of Christ. Ephesians 4:2–3 calls believers to walk“with all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love, being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Healing comes when believers choose forgiveness over offense, prayer over gossip, humility over pride, and truth spoken in love over destructive conflict. Unity does not mean everyone agrees on everything, it means Christ remains greater than our personal preferences.

A healthy church is not built by perfect people but by fully surrendered people who allow God to transform their hearts. When the church chooses love, accountability, grace, and biblical truth, division will completely loose its power.

Reading the Bible, What the Bible Says

Reading the Bible is essential for every Christian because it is the primary way God reveals His character, truth, wisdom, and will to humanity. The Bible is not simply a historical book or a collection of religious writings, it is the living Word of God that teaches, corrects, strengthens, and transforms those who seek Him. Through Scripture, believers grow spiritually, gain wisdom, resist deception, and develop a deeper relationship with God.

The Bible itself declares its divine importance in 2 Timothy 3:16–17:

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”

This verse explains that Scripture equips believers for every area of life. It teaches truth, exposes wrong thinking, corrects behavior, and trains Christians to live righteously. Without regular time in God’s Word, believers can become spiritually weak, confused, or influenced more by culture than by truth.

Reading the Bible also helps believers know God personally. In John 1:1, Jesus is called “the Word,” showing the deep connection between Christ and Scripture. As people read the Bible, they learn about God’s love, holiness, mercy, justice, and salvation. The more believers understand Scripture, the deeper their relationship with God becomes.

The Bible provides guidance and direction for life. Psalms 119:105 says:

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

Life is filled with difficult choices, temptations, and uncertainty. God’s Word acts as spiritual light, helping believers walk wisely and avoid dangerous paths. Without biblical guidance, people often rely only on emotions, public opinion, or worldly advice.

Reading Scripture also protects believers from deception. In a world filled with conflicting ideas and false teachings, Christians need discernment. Acts 17:11 praises the Bereans because they searched the Scriptures daily to test what they were hearing. God desires His people to know truth deeply so they are not easily misled.

The Bible strengthens faith during trials and hardships. Romans 10:17 teaches:

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

Reading Scripture reminds believers of God’s promises, faithfulness, and power. During seasons of fear, grief, confusion, or suffering, God’s Word provides comfort, encouragement, and hope. Many Psalms reveal how God meets people in their deepest struggles and renews their strength.

The Bible also transforms the heart and mind. Romans 12:2 teaches believers to be transformed by the renewing of their minds. Regular reading of Scripture changes how Christians think, speak, and live. God uses His Word to shape attitudes, build wisdom, and produce spiritual maturity.

Finally, reading the Bible draws believers closer to eternal truth. Heaven and earth may change, but God’s Word remains forever. Jesus said in Matthew 24:35:

“Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”

For Christians, reading the Bible is not merely a religious habit, it is spiritual nourishment, guidance, protection, wisdom, and a daily connection with God Himself.

Reading regularly, especially deep, focused reading like studying the Bible, has significant scientific benefits for memory, cognition, emotional regulation, and long-term brain health. Neuroscience and cognitive psychology both show that consistent reading strengthens neural pathways, improves comprehension, enhances attention span, and supports mental resilience throughout life.

When a person reads consistently, the brain actively engages multiple regions at once. Reading involves language processing, memory retrieval, visualization, reasoning, and emotional interpretation. Brain imaging studies have shown that reading activates areas associated with comprehension, critical thinking, and long-term memory formation. This repeated mental activity strengthens neural connections through a process called neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to reorganize and build stronger communication pathways through repeated use.

Memory improves because reading requires the brain to retain information, connect ideas, and recall details over time. When someone studies Scripture regularly, they repeatedly revisit themes, names, teachings, and concepts, which strengthens both short-term and long-term memory systems. Repetition is one of the strongest scientifically supported methods for memory retention. The act of reading, reflecting, journaling, and recalling verses reinforces encoding in the hippocampus, the brain region heavily involved in memory consolidation.

Reading also improves cognitive endurance and concentration. Modern digital culture trains the brain toward rapid scrolling, short attention spans, and fragmented thinking. Deep reading slows the mind and increases sustained attention. This helps improve executive functioning skills such as focus, decision-making, reasoning, and impulse control. Reading complex material like the Bible encourages analytical thinking because readers compare passages, interpret meaning, understand symbolism, and reflect on moral and philosophical ideas.

Scientific research has also linked regular reading to reduced cognitive decline with aging. Studies on lifelong readers suggest that consistent mental stimulation may help preserve cognitive function and build what scientists call cognitive reserve, the brain’s resilience against age-related decline and diseases affecting memory. Mentally engaging activities, including reading and memorization, may help delay symptoms associated with dementia and other degenerative cognitive conditions.

Reading spiritually meaningful material can also reduce stress and improve emotional regulation. Research has shown that focused reading can lower stress levels by slowing heart rate and reducing mental tension. Scripture reading, prayer, and meditation combine cognitive engagement with emotional reflection, which may support calmer thinking and emotional stability. Lower stress levels benefit memory because chronic stress and elevated cortisol can negatively affect the hippocampus and impair memory formation.

Another important scientific benefit is vocabulary and language development. Reading regularly exposes the brain to broader language structures, improving verbal fluency, comprehension, communication skills, and abstract thinking. This strengthens overall intellectual flexibility and learning capacity.

Memorization of Scripture specifically exercises active recall, which is one of the most effective learning strategies identified in educational psychology. Recalling verses without looking strengthens retrieval pathways in the brain, making future recall faster and more accurate. Over time, this repeated mental exercise improves overall memory performance beyond just the memorized material itself.

From both a scientific and spiritual perspective, regular Bible reading develops the mind through repetition, reflection, focus, and emotional engagement. It trains attention, strengthens memory, encourages critical thinking, supports emotional health, and helps maintain cognitive sharpness over time. Consistency matters most, the brain grows stronger through repeated mental exercise just as muscles grow stronger through repeated physical training.

Daily Verse

Refuge: shelter or protection from danger, trouble, etc.; to take refuge from a storm; a place of shelter, protection, or safety; anything to which one has recourse for aid, relief, or escape.

Synonyms: asylum, fortress, haven, hideaway, hideout, hiding place, protection, resort, retreat, sanctuary, security, shelter, stronghold, safe place, way out

God’s protection is personal, gentle, and powerful. This verse paints the picture of a loving Father covering His children like a bird shelters it’s young beneath its wings. In moments of fear, uncertainty, or spiritual attack, you are not abandoned or defenseless. His faithfulness becomes your shield and refuge when life feels overwhelming. Even when storms surround you, God remains near, guarding your heart with His presence and peace. You can rest confidently knowing His love covers you completely and His promises never fail.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, place me under Your wings, shield me from the traps and deceptions that the devil is trying use to deceive and convince me with. Surround me with Your arms giving me the protection only You can Lord. Thank you for keeping me safe from the hazards while You are fighting off the things that are getting thrown at me. The discussion stems from a 2023 law, 88(R) HB 1605, which requires the Texas Education Agency to recommend at least one required reading per grade level. After surveying thousands of teachers, the agency compiled a list of roughly 300 literary works spanning K-12, ranging from children’s classics like Dr. Seuss to works such as The Odyssey for older students.

The majority of Canadian MPs have voted to pass a Liberal bill that will allow the criminalization of religious expression and belief when quoting parts of the Bible, including about homosexuality and gender. Early Wednesday evening, MPs from the Liberal Party and the Bloc Québécois, in a 186–137 vote, passed Bill C-9, known as the “Combatting Hate Act.” Conservatives, NDP, and Green Party MPs voted against the bill in a rare form of unity among the usually opposing parties.

“In late September 1864 Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest was leading his troops north from Decatur, Alabama, toward Nashville. But to make it to Nashville, Forrest would have to defeat the Union army at Athens, Alabama. When the Union commander, Colonel Wallace Campbell, refused to surrender, Forrest asked for a personal meeting, and took Campbell on an inspection of his troops. But each time they left a detachment, the Confederate soldiers simply packed up and moved to another position, artillery and all. Forrest and Campbell would then arrive at the new encampment and continue to tally up the impressive number of Confederate soldiers and weaponry. In 1 John 4:1 the apostle John begins his warning with a word of affection: “Beloved.” Discernment is not rooted in suspicion or fear, but in love for God and truth. John does not say some spirits should be tested but he says every spirit. Every teaching, every prophetic claim, every spiritual movement, every viral message wrapped in religious language must be examined. God calls us to have discernment, not gullibility believing everything that sounds biblical. Every voice is not from Him. Testing the spirits means examining words and experiences comparing it to God’s truth and character. Always stay rooted in Scripture and prayer, so all of the lies and deception gets exposed. That way faith grows steady, wise, and always anchored in Christ through the Spirit’s guidance daily.

Currently we live in a time where information spreads faster than wisdom. So many influencers, social media, podcasts, live streams, and self-proclaimed spiritual authorities have created an overwhelming environment where confidence is mistaken for credibility and emotion is mistaken for truth. We have to always compare everything that is said and suggested to what the Bible says. When we read the bible we can see that Scripture reminds us that not every voice speaking “in the name of God” actually comes from Him.

John told us why comparing and testing is necessary: “for many false prophets have gone out into the world.” False teaching is not a future threat, it is a present reality. Jesus Himself even warned that the closer we get to His return deception would increase, not decrease, and will continue to get worse until He is finally here. You’ll never hear false prophets announce themselves as being false; they do however appear Biblical, convincing, compassionate, and sometimes even successful.

Testing the spirits does not mean rejecting everything unfamiliar. It means evaluating everything carefully. The Bereans in Acts 17:11 provide a model for us: “Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.” The Bereans listened eagerly, soaked up everything they could, but they always verified everything diligently. They did not reject Paul’s teaching outright, but they did not just sit back and accept it blindly. They searched and compared it to the Scriptures daily to confirm whether what they heard aligned with God’s revealed truth.

This raises an important question: What does it mean to test the spirits? Biblically, it means evaluating the source, the message, and the fruit.

  • First, test the source. John will later say in 1 John 4:2 that every spirit that confesses Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God. At the core of Christian discernment is Christology, “a branch of Christian theology that studies the nature and work of Jesus Christ, focusing on his humanity, divinity, and role in salvation.” Any teaching that diminishes Jesus; His deity, His humanity, His authority, or His sufficiency fails the test. If we allow Christ to be reduced to a moral teacher, a political symbol, or a means to personal gain, we then know that the source is not from the Spirit of God.
  • Second, test the message. Does what the “prophets” are saying align with Scripture as a whole? God does not contradict Himself. Feelings, visions, dreams, and personal revelations must always support and match the written Word of God. We do not validate Scripture by our feelings and experience, every experience is validated by Scripture. If a prophetic message requires twisting verses, ignoring context, or adding to God’s Word, it should raise immediate concern.
  • Third, test the fruit. Jesus told us that we would recognize false prophets by their fruit. Does their teaching produce humility, repentance, holiness, and love for others? Or on the other side of things; does it produce fear, pride, division, obsession, and control? The Spirit of God leads people toward truth and transformation, not confusion and bondage. Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2

Being able to Test the spirits requires spiritual maturity. Being able to have discernment grows through prayer, immersion in Scripture, and obedience. A believer that is unfamiliar with God’s Word will struggle to recognize error. This is why deception becomes the most effective among those who consume spiritual content but neglect personal study. “An astonishing and horrible thing has happened in the land.The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule by their own authority; and my people love to have it so. What will you do in the end of it?” Jeremiah 5:30-31

It is important to understand that discernment is not about superiority. It does not give us a license to have harshness or arrogance. Our goal is not to win arguments, but to guard hearts. Paul shows us in Ephesians 4:11-16 that immature believers are easily tossed by every wind of doctrine. Having good and proper judgement protects the church from instability and protects believers from spiritual harm.

Finally, we need to understand that testing the spirits is not optional,  it is a responsibility. God has given His people the Holy Spirit, His Word, and the community of the church so that we may walk in truth together. In confusing times, discernment is an act of faithfulness: For if these things are yours and abound, they make you to not be idle or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these things is blind, seeing only what is near, having forgotten the cleansing from his old sins. Therefore, brothers,be more diligent to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never stumble. 1 Peter 1:8-10

Thoughts to Ponder:

  1. What voices most influence your spiritual thinking right now?
  2. Are you more likely to accept teaching because it feels good or because it is biblical?
  3. How consistent is your personal study of Scripture?
  4. Have you ever shared or supported something spiritually without testing it first?
  5. What steps can you take this week to grow in biblical discernment?

Today, God is calling us to move from just a little bit of passive consumption to having active discernment. If you have relied on emotion, popularity, an influencer or culture more than Scripture, it is time to focus and return to the Word. Ask God to sharpen your spiritual awareness, to help you see the light, and align your heart with His truth. Choose to be a believer who tests, examines, and stands firm in God’s truth.

Dear Heavenly Father, I want to thank You that You are a God of truth and not confusion. A God of order and not chaos. I live in a world filled with so many voices, help me to recognize Your voice above every other voice. Give me discernment through the Holy Spirit and a deep love for Your Word. Protect me from deception, strengthen my faith, and help me to walk in Your wisdom, humility, and obedience. May I honor You by holding fast to what is true and rejecting what is false. In Jesus Name Amen

Thoughts to Ponder

Temptation is never unique, and it is never unbeatable. Paul reminds us that God knows our limits and remains faithful in every trial. He does not promise a temptation-free life, but He always provides a way through it. When pressure feels overwhelming, look for God’s escape route, often found in obedience, prayer, Scripture, and wise choices. This verse invites confidence, not fear. You are not alone, you are not trapped, and you are not powerless. With God’s help, endurance is possible, faith can stand, and victory is within reach.

God warns us against voices that speak from their imagination, not from Him. Not every message that claims spiritual insight carries God’s truth. Wisdom requires discernment. Compare every word against Scripture, not emotion or popularity. Today, ask God for clarity to recognize His voice and reject teaching that leads hearts away from Him.

Colossians 2:8

“Be careful that you don’t let anyone rob you through his philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the elemental spirits of the world, and not after Christ.”

Colossians 2:8 is a warning to guard our minds carefully. Not every proposed idea that sounds wise leads to truth. This world offers hollow philosophies that distract from Christ, slowly reshaping our beliefs without us even noticing. God calls us to filter every influence through the exemple Jesus gave us His example was the fullness of truth. When we stay rooted in Him, we are not easily captured by cultural trends, opinions, or empty promises. Let the Bible shape your thinking today. Ask the Holy Spirit to expose what pulls you away from Christ and strengthen you to walk in wisdom grounded in Him.

Jeremiah reminds us the heart can deceive. Our feelings are unreliable guides. God invites us to submit our heart to His truth, not trust it blindly. When motives confuse and desires wander, ask the Lord to search you, realign you, and lead you in wisdom rooted in His Word, not impulse.
