Scientists have identified a new wild cat species in Bolivia’s cloud forests—and the strangest part is that it was hiding in plain sight. Called the tilcayo, this tiny spotted feline weighs only about three pounds and looks almost identical to other South American tiger cats. But full-genome analysis revealed that its lineage split from its closest relatives roughly 1.4 million years ago.
Researchers also discovered that what had long been treated as one widespread tiger cat was actually several distinct species. The clues had been there for decades: specimens sat unnoticed in museum collections, one animal lived in a wildlife sanctuary, and local communities already had a name for the cat. Now scientists face a bigger question—how many tilcayos actually remain, and how endangered is a species we only just learned to recognize?
