Organic formula brand issues recall after 3 babies diagnosed with infant botulism

Global News anchors presenting breaking news on baby formula recall in studio

An organic baby formula is being voluntarily recalled after three infants who were fed the product were hospitalized with infant botulism, according to a notice from the Food and Drug Administration.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that all three babies had consumed Nara Organics Powdered Infant Formula, which is sold at Target stores throughout the United States. The sickened babies were in California, Washington and Pennsylvania, according to the FDA notice. All three babies were successfully treated, and no deaths have been reported, the FDA said.  The products were also sold at Target.com and Nara.com.

The formula was not sold outside the United States, according to the FDA notice.  No lots of Nara Organics Powdered Infant Formula have tested positive for Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria that causes infant botulism, according to the FDA, but all whole milk infant powdered formula products are being recalled voluntarily by the company.  The three product lots consumed by the sickened babies are 709125280E14F2, 709125288E14F2 and 708125174E14F2, according to the FDA. The lot numbers can be found on the bottom of the formula cans.  Food and Drug Administration “Nara is taking aggressive action to ensure the safety of the babies and families who use the product as we work closely with the FDA, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and state partners to support their investigation into the root causes of these cases,” the company said in the FDA notice.

Customers should stop using the affected products immediately, according to the notice. Anyone who purchased formula from Nara.com between May and June 2026 will receive an automatic refund. Others who bought it from Nara.com can request a refund online. Consumers who purchased the product at Target should return the product there or visit Target’s website for a refund.  Infant botulism occurs when Clostridium botulinum spores enter and colonize the intestinal tract, causing botulinum neurotoxins to grow there, according to the CDC. An outbreak of infant botulism tied to the formula brand ByHeart led to over 50 illnesses in 19 states.

Affected babies may show symptoms including constipation, poor feeding, drooping eyelid, sluggish pupils, low muscle tone, difficulty sucking and swallowing, weak or altered crying, difficulty breathing, and generalized weakness. Respiratory arrest is also possible. The disease can be fatal.

Illinois leading U.S. in tornadoes with 140 so far in 2026

dramatic sky over rural wheat field

Thursday night’s tornado outbreak in the Chicago area continues a concerning trend of increasing tornado frequency in the Upper Midwest. With 140 tornadoes so far this year, Illinois leads the nation in tornado count for the third of the last four years. In a distant second place is Mississippi with 82 tornadoes this year, and Missouri comes in third with 62.  It’s the fourth year in a row that Illinois has surpassed 100 tornadoes. Illinois averages only 54 tornadoes per year, according to the Illinois State Climatologist’s Office.

As CBS News Chicago reported in February, we may be witnessing what climate researchers have long expected in a warming climate. As human activities add greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere, a warmer climate is making the traditional Tornado Alley in the Plains hotter and more arid. This change shifts the more favorable tornado ingredients eastward into the Midwest and Deep South, and leads to more tornadoes in Illinois. Thursday’s tornado outbreak comes during the typical peak of tornado activity in Illinois. Tornado frequency typically peaks between April and June in the Chicago area. It follows a very unusual early-season tornado outbreak on March 10 that brought a deadly EF-3 tornado to Kankakee and Newton counties.

National Weather Service confirms multiple tornadoes with Streator, Merrillville among hardest hit areas

uprooted tree cut in pieces

Residents across Illinois and Indiana are cleaning up from severe damage after destructive tornadoes and severe storms hit on Thursday night.  As of Friday evening, the National Weather Service has confirmed at least seven tornado touchdowns on June 11, including an EF-3 tornado in Kouts, Indiana, an EF-3 tornado in Streator, Illinois, an EF-2 tornado in Merrillville, Indiana, an EF-1 tornado in Bartlett , Illinois, an EF-1 tornado near Dwight, Illinois, an Ef-1 tornado in Wenona, Illinois, and an EF-0 tornado in St. John, Indiana. Storm survey crews will be deployed across the area to assess the extent of damage, which officials said could take several days.

Thousands without power across Illinois, Indiana   ComEd officials provided an update on Friday morning on the storm restoration efforts following the back-to-back storms.  ComEd said the 80 miles per hour winds had the biggest impact on their service area. Officials said nearly 3,000 employees have been working to restore power.  “Our crews are working as fast as possible to get you back online,” ComEd officials said.  ComEd’s chief operating officer said Wednesday’s storm affected around 550,000 customers. It is estmated 80% of those outages have been restored and the rest should be complete by Saturday at 11 p.m. The second round of storms on Thursday night impacted some of the same customers. Around 150,000 customers were impacted, and 70,000 have had their power restored.

ComEd expects to restore power to the majority of its customers by Sunday.  Customers can check for alerts on the ComEd website.   As of 11 a.m. on Friday, nearly 62,000 NIPSCO customers in Indiana were without power. NIPSCO.  Gary, Dyer, and Chesterton are among the areas in Indiana most impacted by the outages. NIPSCO had to shut off power to most of the city on Thursday night.  NIPSCO customers can report outages here.  Cleanup continues after destructive tornadoes  Cleanup for the extensive damage stretching from the western suburbs to northwest Indiana is underway for the areas hit hardest.    In Streator, Illinois, about 80 miles southwest of Chicago, multiple houses were completely destroyed after a tornado touched down. Trees were shredded and came crashing down on cars and roofs.  There’s a lot of hard work ahead for cleanup and repairs, but after two days of storms, and a slew of tornadoes, Friday provided calm sunny weather as cleanup efforts began in Streator.

Several homes were destroyed, multiple cars were heavily damaged, and debris was scattered across the city after the storms ripped through. Many damaged homes will have to be torn down and rebuilt. At one home in Streator, police officers, neighbors, and a video journalist following the storms helped rescue a man pinned under debris after the house collapsed. The man suffered a broken leg and will require surgery, but otherwise will be okay. Thankfully, no deaths have been reported from Thursday’s storms in Illinois. Extensive damage also was reported in Bridgeview, Illinois, where trees were uprooted, and telephone poles snapped.  The fire chief said two apartment buildings were evacuated, and residents are taking refuge at the Bridgeview Village Hall.  The National Weather Service will be conducting a survey in Bridgeview on Friday.

Overnight, officials in Merrillville, Indiana, warned residents of road closures in the downtown area due to downed trees and power lines. Officials said a command center was established near 61st and Cleveland streets.  “Please stay clear of any fallen utility lines or damaged utility poles as these pose a serious safety risk,” officials said.  A resident told CBS News Chicago he lost his gazebo and backyard area. “As you can see, it’s all collapsed.”  The Andrean High School campus in Merrillville will remain closed on Friday due to significant damage.  “There are active power lines, downed trees, broken glass, significant roof damage, etc., that make it unsafe,” school officials said in a Facebook post. “While we assess the damage, mitigate safety risk, and determine next steps, we ask that you please stay away from campus until we provide an update.”  Gerado Regalado, his wife, and two daughters were home at the time the storm hit in Merrillville. The storm ripped off their roof, and left barely any walls standing as they took cover. Everything inside the house was damaged, but he’s counting his blessings that his family is safe.

“We can make it again or get another one, but my daughter’s life is more important than mine, you know? It’s hard,” Regalado said. Zachary Van Drunen’s church members helped pick up tree limbs and debris out of his yard in Merrillville. Van Drunen said the wind was a lot stronger than normal. “As soon as we walked through the door, the biggest tree in my yard fell exactly where I was standing. Two seconds later, and we’d be having a completely different conversation right now,” he said. He lives right next door to Harold Curtis. He, his wife, and daughter were also home when the storm came through. They were headed to the basement when Curtis said he felt a strong gust of wind. “As I shut the door behind me to go downstairs, it’s like you felt the wind blow right in, and like in 15 seconds it was over,” Curtis said.

In nearby Hebron, Indiana, residents woke up to a destroyed town on Friday morning. Hebron resident Beth Bowen told CBS News Chicago that when she got out of her house safely, she found her garage had collapsed.  She said it sounded like “train.”  “We felt the pressure, our ears were popping, we thought the doors were going to blow over in our laundry room, it was shaking so bad,” Bowen said. “We felt the house move.”  Professional storm chaser Gabe Cox followed Thursday’s tornadoes for hours as the storms hit multiple communities, including Hebron. He said he counted at least eight separate tornadoes on his own in Illinois and Indiana, and there were more that he couldn’t get to. “This was the most significant tornado outbreak I have ever covered personally,” he said. “To see eight significant tornadoes back to back over the course of four hours, I’ve never experienced that before in my 10 years as a professional, 20 years of storm chasing.” Cox said he’s still processing what he saw and experienced during the storms.

“Honestly, you know, with storm chasing, it’s a range of emotions. There’s the excitement of it, of course. You’re seeing something just phenomenal that most people don’t get to see. Then there’s the reality of what it does, and ending the chase in Hebron last night brought that reality full scale, and so my heart sank. I feel bad for those people. I’m so thankful that they are okay, and not a scratch on them. Obviously, there’s a lot of cleanup to be done, and these people are going to need a lot of help.” In Bartlett, Illinois, a BP gas station had 18 pumps ripped out of the ground from the force of the tornado that hit on Thursday, and debris from the gas station was blown into the parking lot of a nearby Wendy’s. Surveillance video captured the moment the gas pumps toppled to the ground. Garbage cans and debris also could be seen swirling around a parked car. Sources said the driver inside wanted to beat the storm, but stayed put when rain started falling.

Debris from the gas station could be found as far away as a strip mall across the street. The gas station owner said he hopes to have the pumps replaced and the gas station back in operation within the next two weeks. Employees at the nearby Wendy’s were cleaning up for the night when the storm blew through. “I was in the bathroom, and out of nowhere, you just hear a gust of wind, and then it grows stronger and stronger and stronger, and then out of nowhere, you just hear booms, and everything breaks. The store vibrating, and then you get out, you really see the tornado from the window coming this way, and you could hear the branch fall,” Jaden Cordero said. “We were in the tornado.” Thankfully, no one was injured.

Elon Musk becomes the world’s first trillionaire with SpaceX’s IPO

photo of space rocket

Elon Musk has become the first person to cross the trillionaire threshold, at least on paper, after SpaceX priced its blockbuster initial public offering at $135 a share and its stock soared in its stock market debut. Before the IPO, Musk was worth an estimated $813 billion, a fortune more than twice as large as the planet’s second-richest person, Google co-founder Larry Page, who is worth an estimated $288 billion, according to Forbes.  “SpaceX wants to be able to take you to the Moon, take you to Mars and ultimately beyond,” Musk said at a launch event with staffers on Friday at the company’s headquarters in Starbase, Texas.

SpaceX formally setting its stock price at $135 boosted Musk’s fortune to just over $1 trillion. The shares, which trade under the ticker symbol SPCX, jumped after they began trading shortly before noon ET. At its closing price of $160.95 on Friday, Musk’s net worth reached roughly $1.14 trillion, although future declines could push him back below the trillionaire mark. While billionaire wealth alone may be hard enough to comprehend, a trillionaire represents a level of wealth that rivals the economic output of the world’s biggest nations. Only 19 countries have GDPs that surpass $1 trillion, ranging from the U.S. to the Netherlands, according to World Bank data.

Musk’s surging fortune represents a “new Gilded Age” of wealth inequality, Oxfam America senior director of economic justice Nabil Ahmed said in a statement.   “Elon Musk’s rise to trillionaire status marks a new pinnacle of oligarchy,” Ahmed said.  To be sure, plenty of other SpaceX employees and investors are likely to mint new fortunes with the IPO. About 4,400 SpaceX workers could become millionaires when the stock begins trading, according to the New York Times. But Musk is likely to be the biggest beneficiary, given his large stake in the business. Trillionaire math Musk owns 4.8 billion shares of SpaceX, or about 42% of the company, as well as 350 million stock options exercisable at $8.39 per share, according to the company’s IPO filing.

At $135 a share, Musk’s stake is worth $648 billion. His options add another $44.3 billion to his net worth.  Because Forbes valued Musk’s pre-IPO stake in SpaceX at $500 billion, the IPO sale boosts the value of his SpaceX shares by an additional $192.3 billion, bringing his total net worth to $1.005 trillion.  SpaceX shares touched as high as $168.75 in Friday afternoon trading before closing at $160.95. At the closing price, Musk’s stake in SpaceX is worth an additional $326 billion, placing his total wealth at roughly $1.14 billion.

San Francisco museum exhibit highlights lowrider culture, draws in car enthusiasts

black car die cast model

Lowrider culture took center stage at San Francisco’s de Young Museum as community members gathered to celebrate the cultural movement’s contributions to the Bay Area alongside artist Rose B. Simpson’s ongoing exhibition, “LEXICON.” The event drew car enthusiasts from across the region, including Peruvian American lowrider owner John Ugaz, a member of the car club Excandalow. “So our car club, we’re called Excandalow, we are out of the Bay Area,” Ugaz said. Surrounded by custom paintwork and gleaming chrome, Ugaz said the opportunity to share his passion and craftsmanship with the broader San Francisco community was especially meaningful given the stereotypes lowrider enthusiasts have faced over the years.

“We were stereotyped back in the days that, owning car like this, meant you are not a good person,” Ugaz said. “But in reality, some of us have full-time jobs, we have families to take care of, and we are just like any other people. We just enjoy this culture right here.” Visitors spent the day admiring vehicles, including Ugaz’s 1961 Chevrolet Impala, displayed outside on the museum grounds. Among them was Jenifer Lomeli, who said seeing lowriders showcased at one of the city’s most prominent cultural institutions felt like a significant milestone. “From back in the day, it was considered a crime, to now being like, at the steps of such an important institution,” Lomeli said. “I mean the validation is great but also it brings more relevance to light, of like, the culture has been here, it should not have been a crime to begin with.” The exhibition, “Rose B. Simpson: LEXICON,” remains on view at the de Young Museum through February 2027. Museum officials said they hope the event encourages visitors to recognize connections between different communities.

“You know what one may perceive as communities that don’t have things in common, or are not connected, things like this actually show our connections, and it’s a beautiful intersection to be at,” said Abram Jackson, director of interpretation for the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. For Ugaz, the cars may attract attention, but he said the community surrounding lowrider culture is what matters most. “Enjoying being around friends and those friends bringing out their families,” Ugaz said. “The culture being united amongst a lot of people.”

Trump says U.S. killed Tren de Aragua leader in airstrike in Venezuela

dramatic fireball explosion in outdoor setting

The U.S. military has killed the alleged leader of Venezuela-based gang Tren de Aragua, President Trump announced Friday. The president said on Truth Social that U.S. Southern Command carried out a “swift and lethal kinetic strike” to “successfully execute” Hector Rusthenford Guerrero Flores, also known as Niño Guerrero. The mission was “closely coordinated” with the Venezuelan government, the president said, highligting the U.S.’s shifting relationship with Venezuela since its former leader was removed in an American military operation earlier this year. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on X the strike took place earlier this week on a Tren de Aragua compound in Venezuela.

Venezuela’s communications ministry confirmed in a statement that Guerrero Flores was killed in a “combined operation” between U.S. forces and Venezuelan security services to target organized crime in the country’s Bolívar state. Mr. Trump’s social media post included a video that showed a projectile hitting a building, causing it to erupt in flames. “Tren de Aragua terrorists no longer have safe haven in Venezuela or anywhere else and, under my leadership, we will find these vicious murderers and drugs lords anytime, anyplace, and send them to the depths of hell where they belong,” he wrote.

A video posted to Truth Social by President Trump on June 12, 2026, in connection with the killing of Tren de Aragua leader Niño Guerrero. President Trump / Truth Social In a statement on the strikes, U.S. Southern Command described Guerrero Flores, 43, as a “wanted fugitive.” He was indicted late last year in New York federal court on charges that included racketeering, conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists and cocaine conspiracy. The State Department offered up to $5 million for information leading to his capture. Also known as “The Unspeakable” or “The Big Eyebrow,” Guerrero Flores ran Tren de Aragua for more than a decade, helping to grow it from a Venezuelan prison gang to a transnational organization with a presence throughout the Americas, including in the United States, federal prosecutors say.

The indictment accused him of leading a criminal enterprise that trafficked drugs and people, extorted local populations and committed acts of violence. Hector Rusthenford Guerrero Flores U.S. Department of State Prosecutors allege that Guerrero Flores initially operated Tren de Aragua out of Tocorón Prison, directing gang members on the outside and collecting a fee from their activities. CBS News’ partner network, BBC News, reported that Guerrero Flores was in and out of Tocorón Prison for years: He escaped in 2012 and was rearrested a year later. He was sentenced to a 17-year prison term in 2018, but escaped again in 2023, remaining at large after that. Guerrero Flores lived “like a king” during part of his time in prison, BBC News reported. He occupied an entire floor monitored by bodyguards, and the prison had a swimming pool, a zoo and a nightclub. Last year’s indictment alleged the Venezuelan government allowed him to “control the day-to-day operations of the prison.”

The apparent collaboration between the American and Venezuelan governments to kill Guerrero Flores came five months after the U.S. military removed Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from power in a daring nighttime raid.  Maduro was flown to New York, where federal prosecutors accused him of scheming to import cocaine into the United States, in part by allegedly partnering with Tren de Aragua and other cartels. The indictment against Maduro also charged Guerrero Flores as a co-conspirator. Maduro has pleaded not guilty. Since then, Venezuela has been led by Maduro’s former deputy, Delcy Rodriguez. The Trump administration has sought to work with Rodriguez’s government, lifting sanctions on her and pushing to collaborate on oil extraction.

Tren de Aragua has been in Mr. Trump’s crosshairs since he returned to the White House last year. He won a second term after frequently highlighting the gang’s violent presence in the United States — and, critics allege, exaggerating their power within some American communities — on the campaign trail in 2024. Mr. Trump argued the gang was fueled by a massive influx of Venezuelan nationals who traveled to the U.S.-Mexico border during the Biden administration, amid political and economic turmoil in Maduro’s Venezuela. Early last year, the Trump administration designated Tren de Aragua and other Latin American gangs as foreign terrorist organizations. The administration later cited those designations in its legal justification for striking dozens of alleged drug-carrying boats in the Caribbean and the Eastern Pacific last fall, arguing the U.S. is engaged in an “armed conflict” with the groups. Some of those boats were allegedly operated by Tren de Aragua.

The administration also invoked the wartime Alien Enemies Act of 1798 on Tren de Aragua in March 2025, accusing the group of working with the Maduro government to perpetrate an “invasion” of the United States. It drew controversy for using that law to summarily deport hundreds of Venezuelan men, many of whom were sent to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador. Some of the deportees denied that they were gang members, and some judges found the men were denied due process.

San Francisco Zoo welcomes first penguin chicks in three years

penguins on shore

The San Francisco Zoo recently welcomed three Magellanic penguin chicks, the first successful hatching of these South American birds at the zoo in three years. The zoo said in a press release on Friday that the three chicks were hatched nearly four weeks ago, and zookeepers attribute their long-awaited success to the decision to incubate and hand-rear the penguins, rather than let their penguin parents raise them.

“One of the key reasons is that it had been a few years since we’ve had chicks and some of the potential parents were not at the experience level we prefer. So basically, we decided to hand-rear them, which entails nearly 24-hour care in the beginning,” Brice Smith, the zoo’s assistant curator of birds said in a statement. T San Francisco Zoo The SF Zoo’s breeding colony of Magellanic penguins is the most successful in a zoo accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, hatching between two and five chicks each year since the late 1980s, according to zoo officials. This year, after the death of a few penguins from old age or illness, the zoo secured approval to pair up penguin parents, said curator Quinn Brown. “Breeding is highly strategic,” said Brown. “Some of our pairs have been very successful, and some are not approved to breed as their genetics may be overrepresented in accredited facilities.”

Native to the southern coast of South America with populations mostly hailing from Argentina, Chile and the Falkland Islands, Magellanic penguins are listed as Near Threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Zoo officials said that the three chicks are growing steadily and will continue to have their “fluff” for the next several weeks. In the meantime, they are being hand-fed, like the rest of the Penguin Island colony. “When they’ve matured a bit more, we will start teaching them how to swim,” said Smith. “They are a little awkward, but get the hang of things easily.” Staff plans to introduce the chicks to the rest of the Penguin Island residents later this summer,

Longleat keepers ‘excited’ to care for trio of maned wolves

portrait of a maned wolf in natural habitat

Keepers at a safari park say they are excited to care for a trio of maned wolves. The new additions at Longleat Estate, Wiltshire, are the first of their species to live at the park. Maned wolves, despite their name, are not wolves and are similar to foxes in appearance and are omnivores – primarily eating fallen fruit, insects, and fish. New additions Fleur, Luna and Arabella will live in a mixed South American habitat with capybaras and tapirs. “We’re excited for guests to see the three new girls,” said keeper Eloïse Kilbane.

Maned wolves have unusually long legs, which allow them to see over long grass The maned wolves have been living at the park for six months to acclimatise, and will now be living in areas open to visitors. They have unusual proportions, with long legs that allow them to see over the long grasses of their natural habitat. The species has been in decline in its native South America in recent decades. “There are fewer than 17,000 maned wolves left in the wild and the species has seen a 20% reduction in just 15 years,” Kilbane said. “This makes the three sisters incredibly important, even though we don’t plan to breed them currently.”

Four days of extreme rain killed 7% of world’s rarest orangutans, study says

adorable baby orangutan in black and white

Four days of extreme rain and landslides in the Indonesian island of Sumatra have pushed the world’s most endangered great apes even closer to extinction, says a study. Research suggests that 58 of less than 800 critically endangered Tapanuli orangutans, or around 7% of the total species, were killed as a result of the extreme weather event last November. Those are conservative figures, and do not take into account rain-induced canopy damage or reduced food availability, said the authors of the study published on Wednesday.

Cyclone Senyar ravaged Sumatra in late November, killing more than 1,000 people in Southeast Asia’s deadliest natural disaster for 2025. The study’s findings, said the authors, show that extreme rainfall events can directly threaten the survival of great ape populations. The damage to the island’s wildlife, however, has been harder to quantify. Wildlife experts and conservationists had previously observed that, in the wake of the storm, Tapanuli orangutan sightings had dissipated – fuelling speculation that the great apes may have been swept away by floods and landslides. Professor Erik Meijaard, managing director of Borneo Futures in Brunei and an author of the study published on Wednesday, had told the BBC in December that Cyclone Senyar had likely killed about 35 orangutans – a loss which he said would constitute “a major blow to the population”.

His more recent estimate of 58 deaths marks a significant uptick on that figure. Weeks after the cyclone, humanitarian workers told the BBC they found the carcass of what they believed to be a Tapanuli orangutan semi-buried amid debris of mud and logs in Pulo Pakkat village in central Tapanuli district. “I have seen several dead bodies of humans in the past few days but this was the first dead wildlife,” said Deckey Chandra, who was working with a humanitarian team in the area. “They used to come to this place to eat fruits. But now it seems to have become their graveyard.” Meijaard said he had seen photos of the dead orangutan, shared by Chandra. “What struck me is that all the flesh had been ripped off the face,” he said. “If a few hectares of forest comes down in massive landslides, even powerful orangutans are helpless and just get mangled.” “It must have been hellish in the forest at the time.”

City officials consider all options to reduce deer population in Beverly Hills, Michigan

three white tailed deer grazing in dover tennessee

Deterrents, deer hunting or trapping, and even deer birth control are among the options city officials are considering to lower the deer population in Beverly Hills.  “First and foremost problem we have is safety– we’re concerned we’re going to start seeing more car-deer accidents,” said Edward Arnold, the director of public safety for Beverly Hills.  Arnold said deer in the area like to make a feast of people’s gardens and tend to cross the street whenever they feel like it. He said that they can also be aggressive. “We had some reports that the deer would start to stomp with their hooves and then actually trotted after a person one time– someone said that it chased them and their dog back into their house,” Arnold said.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources spoke with local officials and residents earlier this month to outline their options, from trapping or hunting the deer to deterrents like wire to cover plants, to trapping and then sterilizing the deer so they can’t reproduce.  “The option might be education and promoting coexistence, and that might be the answer for their community if the goal is to reduce deer-vehicle collisions because they’ve seen an increase that would then lend itself to some sort of lethal management option,” said Kara Colton, a wildlife biologist with the DNR.  Arnold said that it is possible to have a firearm hunt within village limits. There would be restrictions on the time and place where hunters could discharge their firearms. Another option is an archery hunt.  He said village officials are considering all the options and will probably discuss them well into the summer.  “They’re going to want to have several more meetings; they’ll be public meetings, so residents are encouraged to come there and voice their opinion.

5 police officers shot dead in cartel-plagued part of Mexico as World Cup kicks off

string with flags

Five Mexican police officers were shot dead and five others wounded Wednesday in violence-hit Michoacan state on the eve of the World Cup opener in Mexico City, local authorities said. The officers were attacked by unknown assailants in an Indigenous region of the western state, which is plagued by cartel violence, the state government reported. The pickup truck they were traveling in was riddled with bullet holes, according to images obtained by AFP. In a social media post, the Moriela Police Department identified the slain officers as Porfirio Rodriguez Briseno, Brandon Josue Zamora Torres, Francisco Javier Otero Damas, Jonatan Mondragon Servin and  Mateo Valdez Abarca.

Jose Pablo Alarcon Olemdo, the city’s former police chief, extended his condolences the victims’ families and friends. “The criminals responsible for this attack must be arrested and punished with the full weight of the law,” he wrote on social media. The attack took place in the municipality of Nahuatzen, a region inhabited by the Purepecha people where the powerful New Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) operates. In May, the brazen murder of a small-city mayor, allegedly by the CJNG, prompted angry protests targeting symbols of the state, which many residents accused of failing to combat spiraling violence.

Michoacan’s capital Morelia is situated around 300 kilometers from both Mexico City and fellow World Cup host city Guadalajara. The state’s security department said police were searching for the perpetrators of Wednesday’s attack. Mexico’s government insists that there is no security threat to visiting World Cup fans. Mexico is co-hosting the tournament with Canada and the United States. The U.S. Embassy said this week that because safety risks in Mexico can “vary greatly by region,” each Mexican state has been given its own travel advisory by the U.S. State Department.

In late April,  the Mexican military captured one of the CJNG’s top leaders in the northwest of the country, two months after the cartel’s leader was killed. Audias Flores Silva, also known as “El Jardinero,” or The Gardener, was seen as a possible successor to the killed leader and the United States had a $5 million reward out for information leading to his arrest. Flores Silva was seen as a possible successor to Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, or “El Mencho,” who was killed in a dramatic military operation in February. The killing of “El Mencho” led to a surge of cartel violence with a wave of attacks on businesses by cartel gunmen, vehicle burnings and road blockades that killed more than 70 people, including 25 National Guard members.

Fundraiser for, Karmelo Anthony, teen convicted of Frisco track meet murder, taken down

Various US dollar bills floating in a dimly lit prison corridor with iron bars

Convicted killer Karmelo Anthony’s family used fundraiser money for moving and living expenses. Karmelo Anthony will serve his sentence while it appears the fundraising campaign for his family organized by his mother, Kala Hayes, has been taken down. Anthony was convicted of murder and sentenced to 35 years behind bars on Tuesday. He has since filed a notice of appeal to challenge the conviction. The fundraiser was posted on GiveSendGo, an international crowdfunding platform, on April 15, 2025. It was less than two weeks after Anthony fatally stabbed 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas.

All the while, the fundraiser for Anthony and his family, titled, “Help Karmelo Official Fund,” initially had a goal of generating nearly $1.4 million, and raised just shy of $634,000. The now-defunct fundraiser shared this purpose, according to the website. “While legal defense is a critical part of this journey, we want to make it clear that this fund is not solely dedicated to legal expenses. The funds raised will also support a range of urgent and necessary means that have emerged as a result of the situation, including – but not limited to – the safe relocation of the Anthony family due to escalating threats to their safety and well-being, as well as basic living costs, transportation, counseling, and other security measures.”

World’s largest whale graveyard discovered by sub at bottom of ocean: “Completely unexpected”

Underwater Jurassic marine reptiles swimming among ammonites and ancient fish

The world’s largest whale graveyard has been discovered at the bottom of the Indian Ocean by Chinese scientists, who found that the vast expanse of both new and ancient carcasses supports huge communities of deep-sea life. It is the deepest and oldest known whale graveyard on Earth, according to research published in the journal Nature on Wednesday, with some fossils dating back 5.3 million years. From inside a small submersible, the Chinese researchers saw many strange animals — many believed to be new to science — living off the whale carcasses.

A new, though extinct, species of whale was also identified among the nearly 500 skeletons that were found up to 7,000 meters deep along a 1,200-kilometer corridor of bones in the Indian Ocean west of Australia. Lead study author Xiaotong Peng of the Chinese Academy of Sciences told AFP that the researchers were “astonished” when the scale of their discovery became clear. It was known that when whales die and drop to the seafloor, their sunken bodies — called “whale falls” — provide a source of food to deep-sea creatures. “But discovering a necropolis of this scale was completely unexpected: the size of distribution, the depth and the age range were far beyond anything we had imagined,” Xiaotong Peng said.

Tularemia detected in Northern Colorado after dead rabbit discovered in Berthoud

photo of two rabbits in a forest

Tularemia has been detected in Northern Colorado after a dead rabbit was discovered in a Berthoud neighborhood. According to Larimer County Department of Health and Environment, the bacteria was identified in a dead rabbit.  Health officials said that because tularemia is natural to Larimer County, it is likely present in other areas throughout the county.  They are reminding residents and visitors that a few simple precautions can help prevent illness from rabbits, ticks and other wildlife while enjoying the outdoors.  According to LCDHE, tularemia is a rare but potentially serious bacterial infection found in local wildlife, especially rabbits and rodents.

Health officials said it can spread to humans through bites from infected ticks and deer flies, direct contact with sick or dead animals and contaminated soil, water and vegetation.  Common symptoms, according to LCDHE, include fever, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, and skin ulcers. When diagnosed early, tularemia can be effectively treated with antibiotics. In Larimer County, there have been seven human cases of tularemia since 2020. In Larimer County, there have been 7 human cases of tularemia since 2020.  “Because tularemia is present in Larimer County, it’s important to take steps to avoid infection,” said Dr. Paul Mayer, the health department’s Medical Officer, in a statement.

He recommends that residents and visitors always “use effective insect repellent, check skin for ticks after being outdoors, and keep children and pets away from wild animals, including rabbits and squirrels.” Additional Information from LCDHE: To help reduce your risk of tularemia,

LCDHE recommends the following precautions when spending time outdoors:

  • Wear gloves while gardening and wash hands before eating or touching your face
  • Use an EPA-registered insect repellent effective against ticks and biting flies (such as DEET or picaridin)
  • Wear a dust mask when mowing, using a leaf blower, or digging in soil
  • Wear shoes outdoors, especially in areas where dead animals may have been
  • Use protective gloves to remove dead rabbits or rodents from your property

High-end cars participating in 2026 Hot Rod Power Tour stolen, damaged in Joliet hotel parking lot

front view of sleek white sports car in urban setting

Multiple high-end cars participating in the 2026 Hot Rod Power Tour were damaged, and some were stolen from a hotel parking lot in Joliet, Illinois, early Tuesday. Police said officers responded to the hotel’s parking lot at 1471 Rock Creek Boulevard around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday and found multiple damaged cars. Police confirmed three Chevrolet Corvettes and one Chevrolet Camaro had been stolen from the parking lot.  Police said a Chevrolet SS, a Dodge Challenger, and an additional Chevrolet Camaro were found damaged in the parking lot. A Dodge Charger was also found damaged in the nearby parking lot of a Comfort Inn.

“People should step up and work a little harder instead of taking from other people.  What’s wrong with participating in humanity and giving instead of taking?” said the owner of a white 2017 Corvette Z06 with a Z07 package that was stolen, who asked to be identified only as Michael. Michael said he, along with a friend and brother-in-law, came to the Route 66 Raceway in Joliet to take part in the Hot Rod Tower Tour on Monday. Michael said he’s attended the tour for 19 years and never had a problem. His brother-in-law’s car was also stolen. It was found in Dolton, after the person behind the wheel crashed it.

“From what we understand when officers in Dolton arrived, many people fled from the scene, but I can tell you no one was arrested as part of that incident, from what we understand,” said Joliet Police Sgt. Dwayne English. English said the value of these vehicles ranges from $60,000 to $90,000. “These vehicles clearly represent a strong investment for the owner, and probably a strong element of pride for the owner as well,” he said. English said it’s clear this was a coordinated effort, with each car taken without the keys used. Each owner had their key when their car was stolen from the parking lot. No arrests have been made.

New “glamping” reservations at Laurel Hill State Park canceled over tent safety concerns

camping tents and chairs in the middle of a grassy area

Last October, Pennsylvania announced plans to bring “glamping,” or luxury camping, to several state parks, including Laurel Hill State Park in Somerset County. But now, some of those plans have been put on hold.  A safety issue involving tents scheduled to be used at several parks has forced cancellations and refunds for people who had already booked reservations. According to Timberline Glamping, a recently manufactured batch of canvas tents was unable to meet both fireproofing and waterproofing requirements at the same time due to changes in federal environmental standards. The company says that because the tents did not meet safety expectations, it made the decision not to use them.

In a statement to KDKA, Timberline Glamping said, “Timberline Glamping prioritizes the safety of our guests over any profits or convenience. All reservations that had to be cancelled due to this safety recall have been refunded in full.” The issue comes as Pennsylvania state parks continue to see strong visitor numbers and growing interest in camping. State officials have promoted the glamping initiative as a way to expand overnight lodging options and attract new visitors to the parks. In a statement to KDKA, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources said, “DCNR is committed to keeping visitors informed and ensuring all facilities meet strict safety standards.

Timberline Glamping identified an issue with a batch of canvas tents that prevent fireproofing and waterproofing treatments from working together, and glampsites using those tents will remain closed. Six sites at Hickory Run and Promised Land State Parks remain on track to open by July 4 using tents that meet safety requirements, and no issues have been reported at French Creek State Park. Timberline notified guests in advance, issued refunds, and has worked closely with DCNR to address the issue and meet the Commonwealth’s public safety standards.”

The Reflecting Pool Controversy Is Absurd: Not Everything Trump Does Has to Be a Crisis

washington monument in lincoln memorial reflecting pool at dusk

One must wonder whether President Trump’s least discriminating critics have ever read the fable of “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” — or at least whether, if they have, they understood that it was not an advertisement in favor of unyielding panic. There are many, many things to criticize about our 45th and 47th president, but it cannot be the case that literally everything the man does is wrong. That even his decision to clear up the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C., became an occasion for condemnation, anger, and charges of presidential impropriety suggests that, eleven years into his domination of American life, some among us have yet to internalize this fact.

Before Trump decided to clean it up, the Reflecting Pool was a mess. This was not unique in recent American history. Under President Obama, the federal government spent $30 million renovating the Reflecting Pool and then, almost immediately, spent yet more money to deal with an algae outbreak. Between 2015 and 2016, further repairs were made after the eastern end was damaged during construction. And, in 2017, the pool was completely drained in response to an outbreak of parasites that proved harmful to ducks. Nine years later, when Trump announced his more substantial makeover, the Reflecting Pool needed attention once again. It was full of algae; it had several leaks that needed attention; and, in the estimation of Trump’s advisers, the basin required repainting to enhance the water’s reflective effect.

As part of a broader attempt to beautify Washington, D.C., Trump signaled his intention to take on the project and, in so doing, provoked some wild reactions. A near-endless supply of “preservationists” told the newspapers that Trump’s planned changes to the basin-coating would make the pool look like a residential swimming pool, and thereby deprive us of our “our shared cultural landscape heritage”; a series of reflexive partisans insisted wildly that the attraction was fine as it was, despite the presence of algae that had turned the pool a ghastly greenish brown; and Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, took to sharing photographs of the in-progress project, alongside captions that implied that the mere existence of a temporary construction site represented a terminal failure of planning. (Quite how Newsom squares this position with California’s ongoing high-speed rail debacle, he has never explained.) The opposition was breathless, fevered, and typically extremely silly.

The best argument made was that Trump had bypassed the usual channels before moving ahead with his plan. But, in this case, that was likely a net plus. It is not at all clear that there were any legal obstacles to the White House’s decision to ignore the usual review process, and, given that the usual reviewers are a bunch of pretentious naysayers, their involvement would most likely have served no purpose beyond slowing the restoration down. Clearly, President Trump wanted the pool to be presentable in time for America’s 250th anniversary celebrations, and, clearly, the only way to achieve this was to cut out the network of groups, societies, fellowships, and other self-appointed arbiters of taste whose implacable opposition to him was foreordained. Absent those encumbrances, Trump put himself back into his old real estate developer mode, and got the thing done posthaste.

And it looks good! Which is why, despite the predictions of disaster, the new criticism of the cavilers is that the pool now looks exactly like it used to when it was working as designed. “The Reflecting Pool is full again — and looks almost the same,” the Washington Post declared this week. Which is exactly what one would want to say about a successful restoration project, is it not? (The “nearly” in that sentence, of course, is a grudging substitute for “better.”) A monument needed fixing, and it was fixed, quickly and competently. Not every development has to be a crisis. Not every moment calls for extended debate. Not all features of American life require interrogation by postmodernist bores. Sometimes, a pool is just a pool.

Seven Jailed over Violent Protests Following Murder of Handcuffed Nowak

anonymous people standing on street among smoke during protests at night

A total of seven men have now been sentenced to prison for their roles in the violent protests that broke out in Southampton last week in the wake of the killing of Henry Nowak. Earlier this month, footage was released by the Hampshire Constabulary documenting some of the final moments in the life of 18-year-old Henry Nowak, who was murdered with a traditional Sikh blade by 23-year-old Vikrum Digwa. The footage, which was published in the wake of the murder trial, showed Nowak on the ground, meekly telling police officers that he could not breathe and that he had been stabbed.

Incredulous after hearing false accusations that Nowak had been racially abusive towards Digwa, an officer infamously replied, “I don’t think you have, mate”, to Nowak’s insistence that he had been stabbed. Nowak lost consciousness and died moments later. The incident confirmed what many in Britain believe to be a system of “two-tier” justice in which ethnic and religious minorities are given preferential treatment over their native white counterparts and sparked outrage locally in Southampton. The following day after the footage was released, hundreds gathered outside the Southampton Central Police Station to protest the alleged role the police played in the death of the local student. As the evening wore on, clashes broke out between demonstrators and officers in riot gear deployed to the scene, who came under assault with bricks, bins, and other makeshift missiles. Following a string of hearings on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Southampton Crown Court, seven men were sentenced to prison over their role in the riots, the BBC reported.

Second bird tests positive for West Nile virus in Ventura County

close up of mosquito on human skin

For the second time this year, public health staff said a bird in Ventura County tested positive for West Nile virus. The Ventura County Environmental Health Division announced the discovery on Tuesday after receiving confirmation from the California Department of Public Health. County staff said they expect more positive cases to emerge throughout this year’s mosquito season.  Public health officials said they located both birds in the City of Ventura. The first was found on May 12, and the second was located more than two weeks later, on May 28.  Ventura County staff said they will inspect and treat mosquito breeding sources surrounding the area where they found the infected bird.

They asked residents to take the following steps to minimize exposure to West Nile virus:

  • Eliminate all standing water sources from your property.
  • Ensure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens without holes.
  • When outdoors, wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts and limit activity, especially at dawn and dusk.
  • Use an EPA-approved insect repellent containing Picaridin, DEET, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (or PMD), or IR3535.

Ventura County Public Health confirmed that there have been no human cases of West Nile virus so far this year.

Individuals exposed to rabid fox in Baltimore’s Roland Park

portrait of a fox

Individuals were exposed to a fox that tested positive for rabies in Baltimore’s Roland Park on Tuesday, according to City Health Department officials.  Two foxes tested positive, and Animal Control believes five others in the area were part of the same den.  Health officials said one of the foxes was picked up near the intersection of Overhill Road and Meadow Lane. The second one was found near the 4400 block of Linkwood Road. Both areas border Stoney Run Park.  Another potential human exposure was reported on 4400 Linkwood Road. Health officials have canvassed the area where the foxes were captured.

“We take any rabies exposure seriously,” said Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Michelle Taylor. “If you have any information about the foxes in the area or believe you may have had contact with a fox, please contact the Baltimore City Health Department.”   Health officials recommend that neighbors living near Stoney Run Park check their pets for potential animal bites or suspicious wounds, and ensure pets are up to date on their rabies vaccinations, as the virus can be deadly if left untreated.  Anyone who handled the foxes in Roland Park is asked to call health officials at 10-396-4436 during normal business hours, or call the Baltimore City Operator at 410-396-3100 after business hours or on weekends.   This is not the first time a rabid animal has been found in Baltimore. In October 2025, a rabid raccoon was captured inside a Baltimore middle school after getting in through an open door.

NYC public school splits parents, staff into `separate’ racial groups

street names boards and traffic lights

A Manhattan public school is treating parents and teachers as “separate” but equal. The P.S. 003 Charrette School in the West Village is hosting a workshop for parents and staffers that separate them into “affinity” groups by race and ethnicity — a move slammed as discriminatory by legal experts. “What Does it Mean to be White in a Multi-Racial Community at PS3? — How does whiteness affect the collective child experience at PS3, as well as the entire community? White-identifying PS3 community members – SIGN UP HERE,” reads the invite posted on the school’s website.

The June 16 “Listening Circles” event is being organized in partnership with a consulting firm called Liberation Spaces that promotes “equity and liberation.” “Folks will gather on zoom with Liberation Spaces for initial guidelines, and then break out into smaller affinity groups with the facilitators based on racial identity,” reads the invitation for parents and educators.

“Bring your valuable perspective and ideas for the future of our school,” it states. “BIPOC Folks – Educators, staff, parents and caregivers who identify as Black, Indigenous, Latinx/Hispanic, Asian, and other people of color – SIGN UP HERE,” it adds — while white parents and teachers are told to participate in a separate group. The bottom of the invitation cites sources of support for the program, including an article titled “Why People of Color Need Spaces Without White People” and another headlined “Becoming an Anti-racist White Ally: How a White Affinity Group Can Help.” Some families and educators were shocked at being advised to separate into groups by race. “The PS 3 PTA Charrette Listening Circles facilitated by Liberation Spaces is planning on segregating parents into ‘BIPOC Folks’ and ‘White-identifying’ affinity groups,” noted Moshe Spern, president of United Jewish Teachers who said he was contacted by PS 3 parents who objected to the event.

“That doesn’t build community. Instead, it divides and isolates families,” Spern said. One civil rights lawyer said separating parents or educators by race was clearly illegal, citing the 1954 landmark US Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education that struck down racial segregation or “separate but equal” education as unconstitutional. “Segregating public school parents by race or ethnicity is not only offensive, it’s also unlawful,” said William Jacobson, a Cornell University law professor and founder of the Equal Protection Project, a nonprofit conservative advocacy organization. “The federal civil rights statutes cover all aspects of school programming, not just what happens in the classroom,” he said. “Segregating faculty and staff by race or ethnicity also may be an unlawful employment practice,” Jacobson added. “Outsourcing these programs to an outside consultant does not insulate the school from liability and responsibility.”

A majority of PS3’s roughly 600 students are white. Spern noted Jewish parents and teachers are not even mentioned on the program description, despite a surge in antisemitism. “This isn’t the time to hide from issues, especially those facing the Jewish community. We should have real conversations around race and bias but needs to be done in a way that makes everyone feel safe and inclusive.” PS 3 refers to itself as a “charrette” school that touts group brainstorming. The school principal, Hillary Casado, declined to comment.

A spokesperson for Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels and the Department of Education said the PS 3 parents association was running the “Listening Circles” program, not the school administration. “New York City Public Schools remains focused on fostering welcoming, inclusive environments where all students and families feel respected and supported. This event was organized by the school’s PTA,” said DOE spokesperson Chyann Tull. “PTAs may separately choose to host a variety of programs and discussions for their parent communities.”

But Jacobson, of the Equal Protection Project, said the school and the city are still “potentially liable” for a PTA-led school program that violates the law, if they “promote or facilitate” it in any way “including on the school website.”The race-based “Listening Circles” is prominently displayed on the PS 3 website and said it is sponsored by the “The PS3 Charrette Planning Committee.”

Minnesota is enjoying a “boring” mosquito season thus far. Here’s what’s keeping them under control for now.

mosquito on human skin

If you’ve noticed fewer mosquitoes so far this year, you’re not imagining it.  “Boring year so far,” said Alex Carlson, public affairs manager with the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District. He says dry conditions have prevented many of the floodwater mosquitoes that typically dominate Minnesota summers from hatching. “The end of the winter had a very low snowpack, so we didn’t see a lot of flooding in the early spring, and then it’s been very dry through most of May and early June so far,” Carlson said. Floodwater mosquitoes, which typically make up the bulk of Minnesota’s mosquito population, rely on rainfall and standing water to hatch.

“When we don’t get those rains, those eggs just build up and they don’t hatch,” Carlson said. Not all mosquitoes have disappeared, however. “There are some species that are not as dependent on rain that will still be out in regular numbers,” Carlson said. Still, the species most people encounter have remained well below normal. The district monitors traps throughout the seven-county metro area, and last week’s collections have shown significantly fewer mosquitoes than usual. “The average across the district was about 15 times below the 10-year average for that particular week,” Carlson said. Despite the slow start, experts say mosquito season is far from over. “There’s always time for mosquitos to come back,” Carlson said. Rain in the weeks ahead could quickly change the outlook. “If we do see rains in the coming weeks then those numbers will start to rebound,” Carlson said. The district says residents can help limit mosquito breeding by removing standing water around their homes, including in buckets, bird baths and other containers where mosquitoes can lay eggs.

Congress passes $70B for DHS — funding ICE immigration enforcement for rest of Trump’s term

ICE police officer wearing uniform and tactical vest with crossed arms

WASHINGTON — Congress has finally passed a $70 billion funding bill for federal immigration enforcement on Tuesday, putting to rest a four-month fight over the fate of President Trump’s mass deportations agenda. House Republicans, in a party-line vote of 214-212, approved the spending for the Department of Homeland Security after the Senate had passed the measure last Friday. Democrats were universally opposed and joined in that opposition by Rep. Kevin Kiley (I-Calif.), who recently left the GOP.

“With today’s vote, House and Senate Republicans have officially ended the third Democrat government shutdown of this Congress,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) in a statement. “And here’s the end result of Democrats’ record-setting obstruction: CBP and ICE will now be funded for the remainder of President Trump’s term and Democrats will have no ability to defund these agencies in the 119th or 120th Congresses.” DHS had been unfunded mostly from mid-February to April, with some immigration enforcement-focused agencies still requiring funding after that.

The measure now moves to Trump’s desk for his signature. Republicans had quibbled over including provisions for $1 billion for beefed up security at Trump’s White House ballroom, as well as a potential prohibition against using any funds for a $1.776 billion judgment fund to compensate perceived victims of “weaponized” prosecutions. Neither item was tucked into the bill after weeks of deliberations — despite some GOP senators offering amendments to do away with the fund — and the legislation was passed by a simple majority in both chambers through a process known as budget reconciliation. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) was the only Republican to oppose it.

Democrats in the upper chamber had delayed passage for three months before that, refusing to back an earlier spending measure in January in protest of federal immigration officers’ fatal shootings of two Americans in Minneapolis. The Secure America Act provides more than $9.5 billion in funding to help hire and pay Border Patrol agents; nearly $3.5 billion for new border surveillance technologies and efforts to combat fentanyl or other drug trafficking; and almost $7.5 billion for retaining more Homeland Security Investigations agents. The spending allows both Immigration and Customs Enforcement as well as Customs and Border

Protection to be fully funded through 2029, with an extra $2.5 billion for other Department of Homeland Security programs. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Democrats had opposed the DHS funding after the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, both 37, who were fatally shot while protesting a surge of federal officers to the Twin Cities for deportations. The Democrats had pressed for universal body cameras — a concession that border czar Tom Homan said was already being implemented — as well as for ICE and CBP officers to go maskless and be forced to obtain judicial warrants for arrests

A Collin County jury found Karmelo Anthony guilty of murder in the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a Frisco ISD track meet, bringing an end to a closely watched trial that drew national attention and sparked debate over self-defense, race and school safety. Anthony, now 19, had been charged in the April 2, 2025, killing of Metcalf at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco. Prosecutors argued Anthony intentionally stabbed Metcalf during an altercation between the two teenagers, while defense attorneys contended Anthony acted in self-defense.

From left to right, Karmelo Anthony and Austin Metcalf. CBS News Texas The jury reached its verdict after hearing testimony from dozens of witnesses over several days, including students who witnessed the confrontation, law enforcement investigators, medical experts and character witnesses called by the defense. Anthony was arrested shortly after the stabbing and charged with murder. On Tuesday, during closing arguments, Judge John Roach allowed the jury to consider a lesser manslaughter charge. Prosecutors said Metcalf and Anthony attended different schools and did not know each other before the encounter. Authorities said the confrontation began near a team tent area before Anthony stabbed Metcalf once in the chest.

Metcalf was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.  The trial now moves to its sentencing phase. Under a murder guilty verdict, Anthony faces a punishment range of five to 99 years or life in prison. A manslaughter conviction would have carried a sentence of two to 20 years in prison. How prosecutors presented their case Prosecutors called 21 witnesses before resting their case, focusing on testimony and evidence they said showed Anthony was not acting in self-defense when he stabbed Metcalf. Among the most emotional testimony came from Collin County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Elizabeth Ventura, who told jurors the stab wound pierced Metcalf’s heart. Ventura described the injury as a large, gaping wound that was not survivable. Prosecutors also showed jurors autopsy photographs during her testimony.

Student witnesses who were at the track meet recounted the moments leading up to and immediately after the stabbing. Memorial High School student Eddie Parra testified that Anthony was inside another school’s team tent before the confrontation and later became emotional while describing seeing blood and a wound in Metcalf’s chest.  Art by Pat Lopez Another student witness testified he did not believe the stabbing was an act of self-defense, characterizing it as “lethal force against non-lethal force.” How Anthony’s defense presented its case Defense attorneys argued Anthony acted to protect himself during the confrontation and sought to challenge the prosecution’s portrayal of the events leading up to the stabbing.

The defense called several witnesses, including Centennial High School track coach Adam Linwood, who testified that athletes commonly socialized in other schools’ tents during track meets. Linwood also told jurors Anthony’s teammates had nominated him for a team captain role, though he acknowledged there was no reason for an athlete to have a knife at a track meet.

Senate fails to extend FISA surveillance program as deadline nears, with 7 Republicans joining Democrats

Smiling child wearing an elephant costume with ears, trunk, and tusks in a green park

Washington — The Senate on Friday blocked an extension of a key warrantless surveillance program used by U.S. intelligence agencies, meaning Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act will expire on June 12 without further intervention.  Seven Republicans joined Democrats in the 47-52 vote against a procedural motion that would have set up a final vote on the extension next week. The vote comes amid concerns over President Trump’s controversial pick of federal housing finance regulator Bill Pulte to serve as acting director of national intelligence.

But a key objection from Republicans who blocked the reauthorization is that the law can be used to spy on Americans without a warrant. The seven Republicans who voted with Democrats were Sens. Josh Hawley of Missouri, Mike Lee of Utah, Rand Paul of Kentucky, Eric Schmitt of Missouri, Rick Scott of Florida, John Kennedy of Louisiana and Tommy Tuberville of Alabama. Democratic Sen. John Fetterman was the only Democrat who voted to move ahead with the reauthorization vote.  “No warrant to protect Americans? No FISA,” Lee posted on X.  Senate Majority Leader John Thune said following the vote that the Senate “will take another run at it” next week but that Democrats’ opposition is a “terribly irresponsible position,” even though some of the conservatives in his conference voted with Democrats.

“The naming of Pulte to that position, although the timing arguably wasn’t the best, I still don’t think it ought to derail something that’s this important,” Thune said.  Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon, a longtime critic of the surveillance system, said the bipartisan vote was proof that “reform efforts transcend red and blue.” “It’s a message that Americans aren’t going to stand for law-abiding people being spied on,” Wyden told The Associated Press.  The vote marked the latest setback for Mr. Trump and intelligence officials, who have spent months pushing to extend a key provision of FISA that allows agencies such as the CIA, National Security Agency and FBI to collect communications from foreign targets without a warrant.

Concerns that the program can incidentally sweep up Americans’ communications left Republican leaders only able to pass short-term extensions while negotiations continued. Critics wanted a warrant requirement when those communications are accessed. Sen. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee who had worked to negotiate the bill, voted against it. He said earlier Thursday that he and committee Chair Sen. Tom Cotton had reached what he described as a “compromise” on a “strong bill,” but that the “complete irresponsibility of putting forward” Pulte had changed the equation. Pulte has seen pushback to his appointment from both Democrats and Republicans for his lack of experience and past controversies. Thune said the position shouldn’t be “weaponized” and the office should be led by “professionals.”

“Does anybody think it makes good sense to give him the keys to the 18 intelligence agencies?” Warner said. A letter obtained by CBS News Saturday sent to Secretary of State Marco Rubio from Cotton and Sen. Chuck Grassley requested that the State Department “plan for a potential significant gap in foreign intelligence collection” in the event that Section 702 of FISA lapses next week. Cotton and Grassley called on Rubio to “identify all intelligence targets on which the United States may lose valuable intelligence information,” and “determine alternative lawful and constitutional intelligence-collection methods by which the United States could continue collecting intelligence on these individuals.”  It also called on the White House, “if necessary,” to “draft a new Executive Order to remedy the gap left by the lapse” of Section 702.

Mr. Trump on Thursday said Pulte would not be his “permanent” choice for the critical security post. But the president may not have helped his case for Pulte’s appointment when he said he may investigate “rigged elections.” Tulsi Gabbard, the outgoing director, raised eyebrows even among Republicans when she joined an FBI search of an election center in Fulton County, Georgia, earlier this year.  “It’s an acting position, it’s not permanent, he’s not going to be permanent because, you know, I don’t think he’d want to be permanent,” Mr. Trump said in the Oval Office. “But he’s a very smart guy and he may find out some things about the rigged elections, etc., etc. I think he’d like to do it. I’d like to — I think he wants to do it very much. Got a lot of energy. But he’ll be very good. Again, it’s not a permanent position.

We’re looking at, we’re interviewing people right now. But it’s somebody just to take it over for a little while.”  The Senate is expected to revisit the legislation when lawmakers return next week.  Any agreement would still need to clear the chamber’s 60-vote threshold before heading to the House, where lawmakers have yet to resolve differences over a provision restricting a central bank digital currency that House Republican leaders added to secure support for the bill.

House passes pro-union bill after 20 Republicans defy party, in latest move to bypass GOP leadership

Washington — House Democrats, with the help of several Republicans, bypassed GOP leadership on Tuesday to force a successful vote on legislation that would accelerate negotiations on newly-formed unions’ first collective bargaining agreements.  The legislation, titled the Faster Labor Contracts Act, was introduced in September by Democratic Rep. Donald Norcross of New Jersey. It passed in a 230 to 193 vote, with 20 Republicans voting in favor.  In late April, Norcross launched a discharge petition, seeking to bring the bill to the floor.

The procedural maneuver allows members to circumvent leadership and force a floor vote on legislation if they secure a majority support — 218 signatures. The petition hit the threshold within a month, with seven Republicans signing on.  Norcross’ discharge petition is the seventh this session to hit the threshold, a sign of discontent with GOP leadership.  The measure would amend the National Labor Relations Act and require employers to begin contract negotiations with newly-certified unions within 10 days of receiving a written request. It also sets a timeline for mediation and lays out next steps if no agreement is reached after 90 days.

“Right now, employers can delay negotiations on first contracts for years,” Norcross said in a statement in April, adding that his bill “will force employers to act in good faith and come to the negotiating table quickly.”  During debate on the bill, GOP Rep. Tim Walberg of Michigan argued the measure would fast-track “government intrusion into private workplaces” and erode “workers’ rights faster than we have ever seen before.”  “It is the latest attempt to put workers under the thumb of the federal bureaucrats,” Walberg said, referring to the arbitration process laid out in the bill.

Mass shooting by multiple attackers leaves at least dozen dead, 9 wounded in South Africa, police say

aerial view of city buildings

Johannesburg — More than 10 suspects got out of a minibus and moved through a poor neighborhood near South Africa’s biggest city while shooting at residents in a late-night attack that killed at least 12 people and wounded nine others, police said Wednesday. The mass shooting shortly after 11 p.m. Tuesday in an informal settlement in the Cleveland suburb of Johannesburg had the hallmarks of organized crime gangs vying for control of illegal mining or other activities, though police said the motive was still under investigation.

Police said the shooters were dropped off at the settlement in a minibus “and moved through the area, opening fire on residents and community members at multiple locations before fleeing the scene in the same vehicle.” The victims were nine men and three women, according to police. Eleven died at the scene and another victim died in the hospital. A manhunt was launched for the suspects and no arrests had been made, police said. Informal settlements in South Africa are unplanned residential areas that are common in and around big cities where people looking for housing live in shacks or other makeshift structures.

Ambulances were on the scene on Wednesday morning to carry away the bodies of victims, while some community members huddled in groups on the streets. South Africa has seen several high-profile mass shootings recently, including two in December that killed more than 20 people. One of those attacks also involved multiple shooters. Mass shootings in South Africa are often connected to criminal gangs. In Johannesburg, violent gangs are involved in illicit mining in and around a city that has large gold reserves and many mines that have been abandoned by companies. Gangs establish operations in those mines to search for leftover deposits for the illicit trade.

They are renowned for fighting violent turf wars with rival gangs or other killings to try to reinforce their control of areas. Cleveland is a suburb connected to illegal mining activity, a local councilor said, though he added there were also other problems in the area including tensions over land between different parts of the local community and it was not certain illegal mining gangs were responsible for the killings.”There are a lot of moving parts here so it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what is driving the issues,” Councilor Neuren Pietersen said in an interview with the eNCA TV station at the scene.

Police deployed specialist crime intelligence officers to the scene, according to police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.Provincial police commissioner Tommy Mthombeni refused to link the killings to illegal mining until the investigation was complete.”One can term this incident to be insane, to be heartless and to an extent, it is barbaric,” French news agency AFP quoted him as saying.Mthombeni said police had swept the area three weeks ago and confiscated guns and ammunition for AK-47 rifles and arrested three people, AFP reported, adding that a resident told the eNCA broadcaster that people from the neighboring nation Lesotho lived in the settlement.

South Africa has extremely high violent crime rates, with the country recording more than 23,000 homicides in the last financial year, according to official crime statistics, an average of more than 60 a day. The phenomenon of illicit mining in Johannesburg and surrounding areas was one of the concerns that prompted the government in March to deploy the army to certain high-risk areas in a yearlong operation to stop violence linked to organized crime.

Man arrested in San Jose for multiple sexual batteries, including at Valley Fair mall

A man was arrested in San Jose for multiple sexual batteries of women, and investigators believe there may be more victims, police said. In a press release Tuesday, the San Jose Police Department said that officers responded on March 19 to a report of a sexual battery at a Westfield Valley Fair mall parking lot on Stevens Creek Boulevard, at around 9:40 p.m. A woman told officers that she was walking to her car when she was approached by a man who sexually assaulted her over her clothing.  The suspect fled before police arrived.

The woman said she fell to the ground while trying to fight off the suspect and was slightly injured in the attack, police said. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment.  During the investigation, detectives identified the suspect as 19-year-old Cupertino resident Josiah Adorno. Detectives also linked him to two similar sexual batteries in San Jose, police said. On May 26, officers arrested Adorno in San Jose and booked him into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for multiple crimes, including false imprisonment and felony sexual battery. Due to the nature of the alleged crimes, detectives believe there may be additional survivors.

San Jose high school aide arrested for alleged sexual communications with teenage girls

Heriberto Plascencia San Jose Police Department

A high school classroom aide was arrested in San Jose last week after he allegedly engaged in inappropriate behavior with two underage female students. One week before the arrest, the San José Police Department said officers responded to a report of an adult male suspect sharing inappropriate sexual messaging and conversations with a student at a high school in the 1500 block of Branham Lane, which is the location for Branham High School.  During their investigation, a second juvenile survivor came forward and reported that the suspect also victimized her, police said.

The department’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force identified the suspect as 31-year-old Heriberto Plascencia.  Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Plascencia and a search warrant for his residence. On May 21, with the assistance of the department’s human trafficking and special victims units, officers found and arrested Plascencia in San Jose, police said.  He was booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail on charges of sending harmful materials to a minor and for annoying or molesting a minor. Police said there may be other victims due to Plascencia’s position of trust as an aide at the high school.  A Campbell Union High School District spokesperson said Plascencia was hired just over a year ago and did clear background checks.

In a message to parents, Branham Principal Beth Silbergeld said that upon becoming aware of the matter, the administration promptly reported it to police and the school was providing support resources to students. “We are deeply troubled that an adult in a position of trust engaged in this type of behavior, which is unacceptable and has no place in our community,” said Silbergeld in the message. “As this remains an active law enforcement investigation, we are unable to share further details.
