This chaotic 2,000-pound seal has returned to sea – but leaves behind a conundrum

Elephant seal resting on wet sandy beach near harbor with boats and buildings

Without so much as a wave of his flipper, Neil the boisterous young elephant seal departed Tasmania this week, leaving behind a legion of fans – and questions about what happens when he gets even bigger. When Rebecca Thomson heard that Neil was back in town in June, she had rushed to the beach to see one of the Australian state’s best-known celebrities. Then Neil, with all his 2,200 blubbery pounds, began following her. “It’s like this giant slug coming at you,” laughed Thomson, who lives in the Tasmanian capital Hobart, and made sure to keep a safe distance from Neil. “It was really exciting and intriguing, and yes, definitely a bit intimidating, too.” All southern elephant seals come on land a few times a year to breed, shed their fur, and interact with each other in gatherings of the otherwise solitary animals.

But while most of his peers do this on remote subantarctic islands, Neil chooses to hang out with humans in the Australian island state during his seasonal visits – and wreak havoc. After following Thomson to the parking lot, Neil began rocking a van, as bystanders laughed and the hapless driver tried to extract his vehicle. Other videos show him blocking roads; slamming into street signposts; peering through residents’ screen doors; and happily flattening traffic cones with his bulbous body. (He hasn’t, to date, threatened any humans.) His stardom has only grown with each visit, winning him enamored fans around the world, and even a theme song. “He’s more ungovernable than ever,” one video caption read on a TikTok fanpage with more than 1.7 million followers. “He features in advertising, local insurance ads, so yeah, he’s definitely become an icon,” Thomson said. However, officials warned his virality had drawn too much attention, potentially jeopardizing his safety – a problem set to become worse as he grows in size and his online popularity skyrockets.

A solitary seal Neil’s story began in 2020, when he was born off the southeast coast of Tasmania, not far from Hobart. This, already, was unusual. Most southern elephant seals in this region are born on the uninhabited Macquarie Island, about 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) south of Hobart, and return to the same site to breed and give birth, said Clive McMahon, a research ecologist at the Sydney Institute of Marine Science. But Neil’s mother may have been young and inexperienced and didn’t make it back to Macquarie Island on time. She was ready to give birth, and the Tasmanian beaches were right there – so out popped Neil. Elephant seals “return to the place where they were born. So Neil is doing exactly what we would expect a good elephant seal to do… it just happens to be that he’s doing his normal behavior in a strange place,” said McMahon, who also lives in Hobart. In the last four decades, as far as scientists know, only a handful of southern elephant seals have been born in Tasmania and survived, according to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania (NRE Tas).

Residents in Tasmania’s southern coastal towns now see Neil a few times a year on shore, where he’s legally protected as a vulnerable species. There’s his molting season in December and January, when seals shed their old fur and outer layer of skin; breeding season, which takes place from September through November; and the enigmatic “mid-year haul-out,” which scientists still don’t fully understand. During the haul-out from April through August, in the Tasmanian winter, elephant seals will gather and interact with each other – especially young males who play-fight and spar. Elephant seals are polygamous and have harems, and the strongest male seals can breed with dozens, or up to 100, female seals. This haul-out period is a chance for young males to “learn the behaviors that they’ll need when they start competing,” McMahon said. But, alas, there are no other young male seals in the residential streets of Hobart to practice chest-puffing and sparring with. “So poor old Neil … is making do with all the other things that he’s ‘playing’ with, so big bollards, the traffic cones, potentially cars, all sorts of other things,” McMahon said. A real big deal with mass appeal To locals, Neil is a cross between a celebrity, a state mascot, and a local troublemaker – and Tasmanians are “very protective of him,” said Sophia Volzke, a marine and Antarctic ecologist based in Hobart. “Everyone loves him,” she added.

“You can talk to a random Tasmanian on the street, they will know Neil the seal.” Volzke began her PhD on elephant seals in 2021, just as Neil was becoming widely known – so his growth, both in size and fame, feels like it’s tracked alongside her degree on his species. She makes a point to see him twice a year when he comes to town. “I do get emotional, I do talk to him when I see him, and he was included in my PhD thesis with a photo, because that was important to me,” she said. Part of that adoration comes from a high level of public awareness about wildlife and conservation in Tasmania, home to many endemic species found nowhere else in the world. Though Australians may be used to seeing other types of seals on their coasts – fur seals, leopard seals – Neil’s species is much less common, adding to his appeal. What his future holds is an open question, however. In the best-case scenario, he could eventually make his way to Macquarie Island, find the colony there, and have a chance to breed with other seals, experts say. But he doesn’t know to find them, and tracking data shows he’s never gone that far south – meaning he’s more likely to spend the rest of his life alone on Tasmania’s shores, roaming asphalt roads and beaches in search of a female. That could present a potential problem for the town, and for Neil himself.

Despite authorities repeatedly urging the public to keep their distance and leave Neil be, thousands of people showed up to see him in June during his most recent haul-out, said Sam Thalmann, a wildlife biologist with NRE Tas, in an interview with CNN affiliate ABC Radio. The crowding poses real danger, with NRE Tas warning in a statement that “even small movements from a large wild animal can cause serious injury.” That risk will only increase as he continues to grow – southern elephant seals are the largest seal species on earth, and male adults can reach up to 8,000 pounds and five meters (16 feet) long, as big as a pickup truck. Thalmamn pointed to the tragic outcome for Freya the friendly walrus, who went viral online in 2022 for climbing onto small boats to sunbathe in the Oslo Fjord. The Norwegian government ultimately euthanized Freya after she was deemed a threat to human safety – with people getting dangerously close to her in the water for photos, or throwing objects at her, despite officials warning them to stay away. Late one night, authorities shot Freya on a boat in the marina. The decision drew widespread public anger, both toward the Norwegian government, and toward spectators who sought out Freya and disregarded official warnings.

Euthanasia is not the approach NRE Tas plans to take, Thalmann emphasized – but the public needs to cooperate to keep themselves and Neil safe. This means no approaching Neil for a selfie or forcing interactions with him. NRE Tas even introduced a 24/7 security detail for Neil during his time on shore, according to ABC. More than 60,000 people signed an online petition urging officials to implement a “non-lethal management plan” for Neil – which includes “restricted access zones” that would keep tourists and non-residents out of his favorite habitats. Even then, the town still needs to prepare for a future where Neil may become three times his current size – and capable of flattening more than a traffic cone. “As a community, we’re just going to have to adapt as well,” McMahon said. “The infrastructure that we built isn’t designed to withstand a 1,000-kilogram animal bashing into it … we’re going to have to rethink some stuff.”

US expert on underground nuclear tests detained in China for 18 months

Three scientists monitoring seismic data on multiple computer screens in a control room

An American scientist who has studied underground nuclear tests has been detained in China for more than 18 months on spying charges, according to his supporters and a US lawmaker. Youlin Chen, a seismologist, has been “wrongfully detained” since November 2024, US Senator Edward Markey said in a statement Tuesday. President Donald Trump raised Chen’s detention and asked for his freedom during a meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing in May, according to Global Reach, a US non-profit that has been working with Chen’s family on his case. Chen, who was living in Boston and has a college-age son, is the only American currently held in China designated as wrongfully detained, the non-profit said. The case adds another point of friction between the US and China as they try to stabilize ties, and ahead of Xi’s expected visit to the US later this fall.

Its revelation comes weeks after China confirmed the arrest of another US scholar, Min Zin, who it said is “suspected of spying and endangering Chinese national security.” Global Reach said there are suspicions that Chen’s detention is linked to China’s recent expansion of its nuclear capabilities, including carrying out an alleged underground nuclear test in 2020. Beijing denies this test. China and the US have both signed, but not ratified, the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) – an international agreement prohibiting “any nuclear weapon test explosion or any other nuclear explosion.” Chen’s work focuses on using seismological data to improve methods to identify and monitor nuclear tests. It has included research into North Korea’s underground nuclear testing. Chen’s research has been funded by the US State Department and US Air Force Research Laboratory.

In December 2020, he authored a technical report that used regional seismic data recorded across Asia, including data from stations in China, to improve methods for nuclear-test monitoring and yield estimation, according to Global Reach. A subsequent 2024 study that he authored was also funded by the US Air Force Research Laboratory and the US Department of State and “further reinforces Chen’s expertise in the seismic monitoring and detection of underground nuclear tests,” the group said. Detained at airport Chen was detained at the airport after visiting his parents in Beijing, according to Kieran Ramsey, chief investigative officer at Global Reach. “China is being accused … by the State Department of violating (the CTBT),” Ramsey said. “And at the same time they’re holding the American expert that would be able to identify that exactly.” “Unfortunately, this case is an example of China being willing to use hostage diplomacy as part of their great-power competition with the US and unfortunately Doctor Chen is the sole example right now officially designated by the US government,” he added.

Earlier this month a pastor who founded one of China’s most prominent underground churches was released from prison and reunited with his family in the United States after being detained in a crackdown in China last year. His release came after Trump raised his case with Xi during his May visit. A State Department spokesperson told CNN that the US has raised Chen’s case directly with Chinese officials and called for his immediate release. When asked by CNN whether the case was raised by Trump during his meeting with Xi, a White House official said that “President Trump has been clear that he wants every American detained abroad to return home.” China’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday denied that Chen was “wrongfully detained” and said judicial authorities handle cases in accordance with the law, when asked about the case at a regular press briefing. Chen was charged with espionage on May 1, 2025, but has not yet stood trial.

The family decided to speak out now about his detention because Trump’s request has not been acted on, Global Reach said. Chen’s wife, Yufang Rong, said she had not spoken to her husband for over 600 days and was concerned for his health. “Youlin has never held a US government security clearance and to suggest he was involved in espionage is both wrong and inconsistent with the public and collaborative nature of the work that he has done,” she said in a statement provided by Global Reach. Noting that her husband “works transparently with Chinese colleagues on scientific collaboration,” she added: “He is doing precisely the kind of people-to-people engagement that the Chinese government says it wants.” US embassy officials have visited Chen several times, but Chinese officials are always present, preventing him from speaking freely, Rong told Reuters in an interview. She retained a Chinese lawyer, but he was allowed to see Chen only after the scientist had been detained for more than 13 months. Chinese officials have interrogated her husband more than 100 times about his work on the seismographic signatures of North Korean nuclear tests, she said.

The Brave New Age of Trust-Fund Socialism

Democrats are in the midst of a fun and terrifying transformation. Hating Trump is no longer sufficient to win elections in blue states. Democratic primary voters—specifically the party’s core constituency of college-educated white professionals—are demanding candidates who also hate Israel and capitalism. The 2028 presidential race is going to be an absolute clown show. The least surprising aspect of the Democratic Party’s lurch toward left-wing radicalism is the pampered, privileged backgrounds of the politicians, donors, and operatives leading the charge.

Zohran Mamdani, mayor of New York City

Mamdani, 34, attended an elite public high school in New York before graduating from Bowdoin College (annual tuition: $74,000) with a degree in Africana studies and launching his short-lived rap career. He has never worked a real job. His father is a Harvard-educated Columbia professor who specializes in “post-colonialism.” His mother is a Harvard-educated filmmaker. The anticapitalist, anti-anti-terrorist mayor married his wife, a Hamas-adjacent activist who also makes art, at his family’s ritzy private compound on Lake Victoria in Uganda.

Graham Platner

Widely hailed as an avatar of working-class anxiety, Platner is the grandson of a renowned architect best known for designing a $20,000 easy chair. His father, a real estate lawyer who served as an assistant district attorney in Maine, loaned him $200,000 to buy a house. Though technically unemployed and living off disability benefits, Platner runs an oyster farm that primarily supplies his mother’s restaurant. He briefly attended the Hotchkiss School (annual tuition:  $79,350). Before a credible rape allegation derailed Platner’s campaign, a New York Times poll showed him trailing Sen. Susan Collins (R., Maine) among working-class voters by 30 points.

Rep. Ro Khanna (D., Calif.)

The shamelessly ambitious congressman has been at the forefront of his party’s left-wing transformation. “Free advice to the Israelis: It’s not a good idea to detain long-shot presidential candidates,” he told the New York Times after an overseas publicity stunt to distract from his enthusiastic support for an accused rapist. Earlier this year, he cosponsored a “wealth tax” bill with Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.). Khanna, whose Silicon Valley district is one of the country’s wealthiest, is married to the daughter of a Cleveland auto parts magnate who utilizes an array of financial strategies the congressman has denounced as “wealth hoarding.” Khanna’s two children, who are still in elementary school, own stakes in three private golf courses, among other investments. His wife, who does not work, once bought a Range Rover that cost more than her husband’s annual salary. The Khannas own a $6 million, 8,000-square-foot mansion in Washington, D.C., which they are selling in order to move closer to their children’s elite private school in Northern Virginia. A Washington Free Beacon financial analysis found that the family’s net worth could exceed $340 million.

Morris Katz

The widely celebrated Mamdani adviser is also credited with launching Platner’s candidacy. Katz, 27, is heir to a garment-industry fortune. His grandfather, Harry Jay Katz, was a notorious womanizer once described as a “playboy prince of darkness” with a “multi-million dollar trust fund.” His father is a playwright, and his mother is the celebrated author of left-wing picture books for toddlers.

Daniel Moraff

Moraff, 34, has degrees from Brown and Yale. His grandfather, Seymour Ginsburg, founded the predecessor to Toys “R” Us and served as the toy chain’s first president. Moraff helped Katz recruit Platner, whom the pair of trust-fund wunderkinds regarded as a “historic figure” destined to lead a socialist “revolution.” Like the former candidate, Moraff has also faced allegations of sexual misconduct. His fiancée’s engagement ring “opens up to a tiny comb” she uses to brush his beard.

Will Neff

Neff, 36, cohosts a podcast with anti-American influencer Hasan Piker. Last year, he accompanied Piker on a trip to China, where the “swagged out white boys” repeatedly praised Mao Zedong. Neff, a former BuzzFeed producer and son of a corporate executive who worked for the Rockefeller family, captained the squash team at the prestigious Blair Academy (annual tuition: $81,950).

Democratic donors

Inherited wealth is a key source of funding for left-wing politicians and affiliated activist groups. MacKenzie Scott, ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and Laurene Powell Jobs, widow of Apple founder Steve Jobs, have donated billions in support of left-wing causes such as “racial equity,” “climate justice,” and whatever it’s called when prosecutors repeatedly decline to punish criminals.

Alex Soros, the 40-year-old son of billionaire financier George Soros, is constantly taking selfies with prominent Democrats at his penthouse in Manhattan. “So proud to be a New Yorker!” he wrote after Mamdani won the mayoral election. “The American Dream continues!”

Leah Hunt-Hendrix, the “anti-elite” granddaughter of billionaire oil tycoon H.L. Hunt, helped Mamdani raise $4 million to fund his mayoral transition. An early supporter of the Occupy Wall Street movement, Hunt-Hendrix summered in the West Bank while completing her Ph.D. from Princeton under Professor Cornel West. She owns a Maltipoo named after Malcom X. Pierce Delahunt (they/them) uses his share of the family outlet mall fortune to fight “intersectional oppression” by funding “anticapitalist” organizations. The self-described “Social Emotional Leftist Educator” earned his master’s degree from the Institute for Humane Education.

Fergie Chambers is the great-grandson of James M. Cox, the former Ohio governor and Democratic presidential nominee who founded what is now Cox Enterprises. After selling his share of the company for hundreds of millions of dollars, Chambers started a Marxist commune in Massachusetts that lasted a few years before going defunct. He fled the United States in 2024 amid a criminal investigation into his funding of violent anti-Israel protests.

Dangerous smoke from Canadian wildfires moves into the Great Lakes and Northeast

mountainous countryside against cloudy morning sky

Massive plumes of Canadian wildfire smoke are set to pour over the border into the United States, bringing dangerous air quality to more than 100 million people in the Midwest and Northeast. Smoke has already been an issue this summer in parts of the West, Plains and Midwest as stateside fires have burned more than 3.6 million acres, mostly in the western half of the country. But the thicker smoke, forecast to move over New York, Washington, DC and other cities in the East, is from wildfires to the north. Check out the smoke forecast in the CNN Weather app In Canada, more than 3,000 fires have burned nearly 4.5 million acres this summer, with a dozen blazes flaring up in Ontario in recent weeks, filling the skies with smoke that is starting to drift south, like it did in an extreme way in 2023. Canadian wildfire activity this year is nowhere near the hyperactivity of 2023 but the combination of wildfires in Ontario and a heat dome in the central US spells smoky trouble for millions.

Planet-heating fossil fuel pollution is increasing the chance of prolonged smoke seasons as it tips the odds that extreme wildfire seasons like 2023’s — Canada’s worst season on record — won’t remain an outlier for long. Unhealthy smoke heads for Great Lakes and Northeast A first round of smoke is already floating over a large area from Chicago to Boston. This smoke has largely stayed higher up in the atmosphere, which means it hasn’t precipitously lowered air quality or posed a significant health risk. But a weather pattern change in coming days will cause lingering smoke and additional plumes to sink to the surface Wednesday and Thursday bringing unhealthy air quality from the Upper Midwest to New England. Wildfire smoke contains dangerous, tiny pollutants called PM2.5 that can travel deep into the lungs or enter the bloodstream when inhaled. The minuscule particles can lead to breathing problems like bronchitis and cause inflammation that aggravates diabetes, heart disease and other health conditions.

Much of Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin are under air quality alerts due to smoke over the next few days, and the National Weather Service has warned that smoke could become an air quality concern in Chicago later this week. People with lung or heart disease, children and older adults are especially at risk for smoke-related illness. The NWS advises people avoid smoke by limiting outdoor activities and keeping windows closed overnight. The only silver lining the smoke brings is that it could dampen some of the heat. Smoke blocks sunlight, which would be welcome news for many parts of the Northeast expected to see high temperatures in the coming days. The smoke is now streaming into the US thanks to a record-breaking heat dome parked over the central part of the country. So far there have been several heat domes — large, slow-moving high pressure systems — this year from the West Coast to the Northeast.

Air flows clockwise around these domes, but until now, none of them have been in quite the right spot to drag Canadian smoke south. The northern edge of this week’s heat dome is perfectly placed over northern Minnesota and southern Ontario, where wildfires rage. This placement means smoke will flow east and south, right into parts of the Midwest and Northeast. With several months left in wildfire season, the door will remain open for more Canadian smoke plumes to migrate south. How does this smoke compare to 2023? This time three years ago, records were being broken as 4,300 fires had already burned 25 million acres across Canada. In June 2023, smoke consumed the New York City skyline as northerly winds pushed a wall of wildfire smoke from Quebec into the Big Apple. The culprits were a dominant high pressure system in the Hudson Bay and a storm system over Atlantic Canada. Together, they funneled smoke into the Midwest and Northeast. Both systems were stagnant, keeping the smoke in place for about four days. 2023’s smoke event was so far-reaching, a study from last year estimates more than 350 million people were exposed to daily wildfire smoke-induced air pollution. Fortunately, wildfire activity in Canada started later compared to that record-setting year, making it unlikely this year’s smoke will be as pervasive.

Smoke seasons are getting worse In the US, the window for outbreaks of unhealthy wildfire smoke is getting bigger, as fire seasons in the West have become longer and more extreme. Climate change was found to be responsible for the majority of the increase of surface wildfire smoke. This smoke has eroded decades of air quality improvements in parts of the US, particularly in the West. Planet-warming pollution caused approximately 15,000 more deaths in the US from wildfire particulate matter from 2006 to 2020 than would have otherwise occurred in a cooler world, a study published last year found.

House passes bill to make Daylight Saving Time permanent

A large ornate clock showing 6:10 between contrasting winter and spring environments

The US House voted Tuesday to pass a measure to enact year-round Daylight Saving Time across the country, springing Congress forward into an issue that has long stumped lawmakers and spurred impassioned pleas by parents, farmers and others with sharply divergent views. It will now head to the Senate for approval before going to the president for his signature — though its chances in the upper chamber remain unclear. Proponents argue it would spare Americans from having to change their clocks, disrupting young children’s sleep schedules and arguably causing more seasonal depression. But detractors say it could have economic consequences, particularly for farmers who would have to wrestle with later sunrises. The House vote was 308 to 117.

President Donald Trump has long decried the semiannual ritual of Americans changing their clocks, though his position on whether the country should default to standard or saving time has evolved. He cheered Tuesday’s bill, the Sunshine Protection Act, when it advanced out of the House Energy and Commerce Committee in May. “Hundreds of Millions of Dollars are spent every year by people, Cities, and States, being forced to change their Clocks,” he said in a Truth Social post. “It’s time that people can stop worrying about the ‘Clock,’ not to mention all of the work and money that is spent on this ridiculous, twice-yearly production. It will also be a very nice WIN for the Republican Party. Take it!” the post said. Many states are ready to embrace the shift. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, 19 states have enacted legislation to switch to year-round Daylight Saving Time if Congress allows it.

But the bill also allows states to opt out if they act before it takes effect, which could affect residents in Hawaii, much of Arizona, and various US territories who observe standard time. Like Trump, congressional lawmakers have long taken an interest in passing laws to “ditch the switch” and make Daylight Saving Time permanent. The issue has generated zealous lobbying and strong advocacy from interest groups including the golf industry, filmmakers, farmers and educators. Support and opposition do not fall on clean party lines. Proponents of Tuesday’s measure argue dropping the clock change would come with a raft of benefits, including sparing Americans from losing an hour of sleep in the spring and other inconveniences. They argue more work hours in sunlight means less seasonal depression, more recreational and economic activity, and less crime in the evenings. “There’s a lot of science on this, and really the question is, why do we still change our clocks? That’s a question many of us ask every time we have to do it, and it’s getting harder and harder to justify,” Democratic Rep. Frank Pallone said at a House committee hearing Monday.

But detractors of the change make the same arguments — pointing to economic benefits and the health of Americans. Lawmakers hailing from agricultural districts warn farmers could be devastated by long winter mornings that see the sun rise later, especially in districts where some won’t see sunlight until after 9 a.m. And some advocates argue it could endanger the lives of students who would commute to school in the dark. And there are some lawmakers who may favor abandoning the clock change but say adopting permanent standard time makes more sense than year-round Daylight Saving Time. “If we’re going to make a permanent change that affects every American, we should follow the science and prioritize Americans’ health, particularly that of the children,” Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon said, speaking in favor of switching to permanent standard time at a committee hearing Monday. Lawmakers’ mixed feelings about the issue largely mirror those of the American public. Polling has showed Americans don’t like changing their clocks but can’t agree on a solution. “I’m a little undecided as to where I go on this bill, but we’ve heard loud and clear that people don’t want to change the clocks,” Republican Rep. Nick Langworthy, who represents parts of Buffalo, New York, said at Monday’s committee hearing, Congress has previously tried to move to permanent Daylight Saving Time, adopting a measure in 1974 as the US was experiencing an energy crisis.

But lawmakers quickly reversed course amid deep unpopularity — a fact that opponents of Tuesday’s bill regularly reference. The episode hasn’t deterred lawmakers from toying with the idea again. In 2022, the Senate passed a version of a daylight saving time bill, but it did not get a floor vote in the House. A bipartisan group of senators in 2025 sought unanimous consent to pass a similar measure, but were thwarted by Republican Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas.

Abdul El-Sayed Wears Luxury Watches Worth Thousands While Campaigning Against the Wealthy

Gold Rolex wristwatch with Roman numerals on wooden desk next to notebook and pen

Left-wing Michigan Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed is running as a populist who rails against the wealthy. At the same time, he’s been photographed on the campaign trail wearing an array of luxury watches worth thousands of dollars, a Washington Free Beacon review found. El-Sayed has even bemoaned the “perverse psychological consequences” of Rolex advertisements along the Michigan freeway. “How many people who drive this road can actually afford one of those?” he asked in his 2020 book. As it turns out, El-Sayed, who described himself in an interview with LGBTDetroit in May as a “sucker for automatic watches” and “classic watches,” can afford some pricey wristwear. He even earned a shout-out from a watch podcast the same month for “rocking what looks like the Sinn U-1 SE,” a German diver’s watch that costs roughly $4,000.

“Badass stealthy pick, well done Doc!,” an Instagram post from the Lan Jam podcast declared. The podcast bills itself as “a friendly discussion between two blokes on watches, cars, aviation, movies, and everything in between.” The following month, in June, El-Sayed posted a video wearing what appears to be an Omega Seamaster DeVille, a vintage watch worth about $3,000. El-Sayed appeared to wear a pricier Omega—the Speedmaster Moon Phase Chronograph, worth roughly $10,000—in a June campaign video. And he donned a Mühle Glashütte S.A.R. Rescue-Timer, a German nautical watch worth nearly $2,000, while “getting ice cream in Grand Haven, MI.” He also sported a vintage 1950s Elgin “Doctors Watch” worth nearly $2,000. El-Sayed has billed himself as a crusader for the working-class against the wealthy and has suggested that he struggles to afford groceries and health care. “Why do we have a trillionaire when the rest of us can barely afford groceries or healthcare?” he wrote in an X post earlier this week. In March, he wrote: “How come we work a full time job and still can’t afford a home?

The answer: corporations can buy politicians.” He has also said he has maximalist political views but a minimalist style and has lacerated American “oligarchs,” saying, “We finally need to start taxing billionaire wealth.” El-Sayed participated in an Instagram video with a self-described “stylist for regular people,” Sophie Strauss, in which she attempted to dress him in a manner that matches his radical politics. When Strauss suggested he wear “something green since you support climate justice,” El-Sayed responded, “Of course, but this feels like money green, and I’m trying to get that out of politics.” In the video, El-Sayed is wearing a watch that resembles a Rolex Submariner, a luxury piece that costs roughly $15,000. Watchmakers like Tag Heuer and Tudor sell lookalikes that cost roughly $2,500 and $5,000, respectively. The Free Beacon could not identify the exact watch El-Sayed is wearing, and a campaign spokeswoman said El-Sayed does not own a Rolex—though the campaign confirmed that he owns several other pricey watches. “He regularly wears a SAR Rescue Timer on the campaign trail because he is trying to rescue our politics from corporate corruption,” said El Sayed spokeswoman Roxie Richner.

“Sometimes he wears a vintage doctor’s watch because he is a doctor,” Richner said, though El-Sayed has never practiced medicine. El-Sayed attended medical school at Columbia University but did not complete a residency. He has never been licensed to practice medicine, though he has referred to himself as a “physician” on the campaign trail. El-Sayed railed against luxury watches before running for Senate. In his 2020 autobiography Healing Politics: A Doctor’s Journey Into the Heart of Our Political Epidemic, he lamented the Rolex billboards that lined Michigan’s highways, saying the ads “have real power” because they serve as “a reminder to almost everyone on that highway that although they cannot afford one, someone driving on that same highway can.” “The cheapest of those watches sells for at least $3,000, even when they’re used,” he wrote. “How many people who drive this road can actually afford one of those?” “Consider the perverse psychological consequences of this signaling,” he continued. “This signaling exacerbates material insecurity. It renders poorer people in more unequal societies more likely to pursue luxury items that they are less able to afford.” El-Sayed’s “impressive” collection earned praise from Josh Rogin, a Washington, D.C., watch collector who runs the Instagram account @WatchTheRamen.

He singled out El-Sayed’s Sinn U-1, calling it an “if you know, you know” piece for those who “still want to wear a $5k watch (and not get mugged).” “He clearly spent years curating it and went way out of his way to collect the pieces he really likes and cares about,” Rogin told the Free Beacon. “Most of them cannot be bought in a retail store.” El-Sayed’s net worth appears to have risen substantially since he ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2018. During that campaign, he released tax returns that showed he and his wife, psychiatrist Sarah Jukaku, earned around $237,000 in 2016. Jukaku has since launched a private practice, Mind Work Psychiatry, that does not accept Medicare or any other insurance and requires patients to pay out-of-pocket, the Free Beacon reported. El-Sayed has called for universal health care through a single-payer “Medicare for All” system that would cover every American “from cradle to grave.” El-Sayed also earned nearly $50,000 from paid speeches between January 2024 and April 2025, according to his 2025 financial disclosure, which also lists him as the owner of an “audio and video media” company, Incision Media LLC, worth between $100,000 and $250,000.

In 2024 and 2025, El-Sayed earned $278,939 working as health director for Wayne County. He and Jukaku own at least two rental properties, one in Michigan and one in India, worth up to $500,000 and $250,000, respectively, according to the disclosure. El-Sayed’s in-laws are also well-off. His father-in-law is a kidney doctor who has donated at least $200,000 to a super PAC supporting El-Sayed’s candidacy. Jukaku also serves on the founders’ committee for the Islamic Society of North America and is a former president of the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Federal prosecutors named both groups as unindicted co-conspirators in the landmark terrorist financing case USA v. Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, the Free Beacon reported.

Christian street preacher cleared of hate speech charges

Pastor John Sherwood, the Christian street preacher arrested last year in West London for alleged homophobic hate speech, has been cleared in Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court. His colleague Peter Simpson confirmed his acquittal on April 7 to the Conservative Woman website. Mr Sherwood’s defence centred on his freedom “to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by public authority” as set out in Article 10 of the 1998 Human Rights Act, Mr Simpson said. On April 23 2021 Metropolitan police officers arrested the pastor near Uxbridge tube station. He had been preaching on Genesis 1:27 and said that the family unit as ordained by God consisted of a father and a mother, not two fathers or two mothers. Some passers-by complained to the police that he was using homophobic hate speech.

The pastor, then 71, was arrested, held overnight at a police station and in September was charged under Section 5 of the Public Order Act, which outlaws “threatening or abusive words or behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress”. The nature of Mr Sherwood’s arrest, which was captured on video, was condemned as “brutal” by campaign group Christian Concern. At the trial almost a year later, “the public gallery was full with Christians showing their support for a man of God who is willing to stand up for the truths of Scripture,” Mr Simpson reported. Pastor Sherwood defied the convention in English courts since the Covid outbreak of defendants and witnesses not holding a holy book but instead reading out from a card the affirmation that they will speak the truth. He insisted on bringing his own Bible and the presiding judge allowed him to swear on that. “How appropriate to swear on the book which would form the basis of his defence,” Mr Simpson said.

Churches and clergy among targets in anti-Christian incidents across Europe

Anti-Christian hate crimes remained elevated in Europe during the month of June, with arson attacks continuing to target Christian sites across the continent.  The Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination against Christians in Europe (OIDAC Europe) documented 40 anti-Christian hate crimes last month, placing June second only to March (41 cases) for the number of recorded incidents in 2026. The incidents targeted churches, Christian institutions, clergy, religious symbols, converts to Christianity, and individual believers across Europe. According to the report, the cases included 12 arson-related attacks, nine acts of vandalism, eight occurrences of desecration, three incidents of physical violence, three thefts of religious objects, two threats, one case combining vandalism and violence, one incident of disruption to a worship service, and one attempted seizure of a religious site.

France recorded the highest number of incidents with 11, followed by Germany at eight, Italy at seven, Poland at four, and both Belgium and Spain at two.  Three incidents were reported in the UK and one in Switzerland, while additional cases were documented in the Netherlands and Estonia.  Among the incidents highlighted as “particularly serious” were the intentional torching of a liturgical book inside a church in La Chapelle-Caro, France, and an incident in which Catholic worshippers were disrupted while praying in Poissy by protesters shouting “Allahu Akbar” and anti-Christian slogans. The report drew attention to an online threat linked to ISIS calling for attacks on Pope Leo XIV and venues during his forthcoming visit to Spain, and expressed concern about a suspected arson attack that destroyed the former Convent of Mercy in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland, as well as crosses being set alight during a music festival in Poland OIDAC said one of the clearest trends throughout June was the ongoing wave of arson attacks.

“June recorded 12 arson-related attacks, only one fewer than the exceptional peak of 13 recorded in May, making June the second-highest month for recorded arson during the first half of the year,” the report said. Vandalism remained widespread, with nine documented incidents – the highest monthly total since March – ranging from churches being deliberately flooded to objects being fired at church buildings and crosses being damaged or destroyed. The organisation said there was a pattern of repeated targeting.  Cowdenbeath Baptist Church in Scotland came under attack for the eighth time, while Hanau’s Holy Spirit Church in Germany was targeted for a second month in a row, and Belgium’s St Peter’s Church in Lommel was hit by another suspected arson. While churches remained the primary targets, OIDAC said June’s figures illustrated the risks faced by individual Christians. Among the three recorded assaults were violence against a Christian street preacher at Speakers’ Corner at London’s Hyde Park, an attack on a Catholic woman inside a cathedral in France, and the assault on a parish priest during a burglary at his presbytery in Levie, in Corsica.

The report singled out threats against Belgian Catholic religion teacher Ahmed Yetrib, a convert from Islam, who said he had “never been so worried” after receiving threatening messages because of social media content explaining his conversion. OIDAC said such cases highlighted “the vulnerability of Christian converts from Islam, whose situation remains under-reported but raises significant concerns for religious freedom and security”.  Alongside the hate crimes included in its statistics, the organisation recorded dozens of additional incidents involving thefts, break-ins, fires and vandalism affecting churches where “an anti-Christian bias could not be clearly established” and which were therefore excluded from the official total. The report concluded that “anti-Christian hostility remained at a high level throughout Europe” during June.

“As in previous reporting periods, the figures presented reflect only incidents documented by OIDAC Europe at the time of publication and therefore cannot capture the full extent of anti-Christian hostility in Europe,” it said.  Official figures from the French Ministry of the Interior, cited in the report, documented 843 anti-Christian crimes in France last year – comprising 734 attacks on property and 109 attacks on individuals – representing a 9% increase on the previous year.  Attacks against individuals went up by 70%, including the killing of Iraqi Christian refugee Ashur Sarnaya, who was fatally stabbed in Lyon while livestreaming about his faith on TikTok. The June report follows OIDAC’s May findings, which recorded 37 anti-Christian hate crimes across Europe, including a record 13 arson-related attacks.

Arlington Police lieutenant serves as the only female SWAT commander across all 16 FIFA host cities

Two security officers walking outside Lions Arena entrance at dusk

FIFA World Cup organizers estimate North Texas will host about four million people during the tournament, more than any other host city. Soccer fans from around the world bring their fandom to Dallas Stadium in Arlington for nine FIFA World Cup games. Law enforcement agencies are making sure people are safe while supporting their teams. That includes Arlington Police Lieutenant Ja’Nae McGee. “I joined the SWAT team in 2022, and from there, it was preparation for FIFA,” McGee said. Lt. McGee is the only female commander leading a SWAT team among the 16 FIFA host cities.

“The reality is being a female in law enforcement is very different than being a male, and as long as we create that sisterhood and that bond with one another, I think it carries on through generations,” McGee said. Lt. McGee decided to go into law enforcement after seeing her cousin work as an officer for the Arlington Police Department. The World Cup assignment is perfect for her; she played soccer in high school and in college. She leads 45 officers on her team and ensures the SWAT unit has everything needed to be prepared for emergencies. “We needed armor, and we need additional resources for tactical operations,” McGee said. Part of the preparation included additional training. “We came up with a big training for the Metro that was spearheaded by Arlington FD, and that was a simulation of a huge drone attack,” McGee said. “It showed us where we need to work on and how we need to work on things.” The Arlington Police Department partners with other agencies for the World Cup.

“We’ve relied heavily on our federal partners, which include the FBI and DPS, and they help us out at the games as a reaction team for outside and interior support when we’re inside the stadium. Then we also rely on Mansfield, who covers us in our absence from the city,” McGee said. France takes on Spain at Dallas Stadium for a semi-final match on Tuesday, July 14. Lt. McGee assured her team is ready. “We get up early, we bring the team in, we get briefed, everyone gets into positions, and then it’s more of we’re here for presence and assistance, and everyone’s having a good time,” McGee said. The mother of a seven-year-old girl hopes to be a role model for other young women while protecting fans from any potential danger.

Inflation eased more than expected in June as gas prices fell, CPI report shows

3D bar chart with vertical bars transitioning in color from red to violet

Inflation slowed more than expected in June, easing to an annual rate of 3.5% from 4.2% in May as lower gasoline prices helped cool price growth, according to Labor Department data released Tuesday. By the numbers Economists polled by the financial data firm FactSet predicted June inflation would rise at an annual rate of 3.9%. The cooler reading comes after three consecutive months of increases that pushed the CPI to its highest level in more than three years. Inflation slowed as a result of declining energy prices, with gasoline prices tumbling 9.7% in June from a month earlier. June’s decline represented the largest one-month decrease since April 2020, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said.

With oil and gasoline prices falling in June and early July, May may represent this year’s peak inflation reading, Oxford Economics said in a report published July 14. The CPI, a basket of goods and services typically bought by consumers, tracks changes in prices over time. Core CPI, which excludes the more volatile energy and food categories, rose at an annual rate of 2.6%, down from 2.9% in May and below economists’ expectations. The lower-than-expected inflation figure comes after the U.S. and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding last month, which implemented a 60-day ceasefire in the war.  However, tensions between the two countries have since flared as they vie for control of the Strait of Hormuz. “A serious re-escalation of the conflict would threaten to revive the key upside risk to inflation and raise the odds of rate hikes,” Goldman Sachs analysts said in a research note before Tuesday’s CPI release.

What experts are saying Experts cautioned that today’s CPI figure doesn’t reflect the recent rise in energy prices driven by renewed tensions between the U.S. and Iran.  On Tuesday, the price of Brent crude, the international benchmark, shot up to a one-month high of more than $86 a barrel after President Trump said the U.S. would reinstitute a military blockade in the Strait of Hormuz and impose a 20% fee on cargo shipments transiting the waterway.  The national average for gasoline sat at $3.86 a gallon on Tuesday, according to AAA, down from a peak of more than $4.50 in May but still above the sub-$3-a-gallon level before the war started. “Oil and gasoline prices — the main reason inflation eased in June — have started to edge back up on renewed US-Iran tensions, but the CPI won’t reflect this for another month,” Nic Puckrin, a markets expert and former Goldman Sachs analyst, said in an email.

Extreme heat prompts safety measures at international soccer tournament in Blaine

Youth soccer players competing on field with crowd and scoreboard

North America’s largest youth soccer tournament kicks off Tuesday in Blaine, Minnesota, bringing more than 1,100 teams from 24 states and 13 countries to the National Sports Center.  About 17,000 athletes from around the globe have arrived, all hoping to make a championship run. But they’ll have to face an added opponent — the sweltering sun. Minnesota is facing extreme heat for a long stretch, forcing organizers to change their game plan.  “We have a medical department here on campus that is a walk-in clinic for players, and we work with the medical team to monitor what we call the wet ball,” said Sara Soli, chief marketing and communications officer of the National Sports Center. Soli said several heat safety measures are in place, including mandatory hydration breaks during games, additional hydration stations and medical staff on every field who will monitor conditions and shorten games by five to ten minutes a half.

For Twin Cities Rush, a local club that won the competition in 2025, the heat is making them rethink strategy.  “Letting the ball do the work, passing it around to people rather than dribbling,” said athlete Leah Schmitt. “The longer you’re holding possession of the ball, the more tired you’re going to get, so passing.” Soli says safety is the number one priority throughout the week and will continue monitoring weather conditions and adjust schedules if needed. No matter the temperature, the goal is still the same for athletes. “Getting to see all the new faces, all the excitement and then playing the sport that we love the most,” smiled Maddie Peterson.  The first match of the eight-day tournament kicks off Tuesday at 7 a.m. Officials say the Target USA Cup brought in over $42 million to the state in 2025.

Teens from across Chicago on Monday were learning firsthand what it takes to be a firefighter. The Chicago Fire Department is hosting “Camp Courage” at the Engine Company No. 121 firehouse in the Beverly neighborhood. The first day of camp on Monday focuses on firefighting skills. Teens learned how to quickly put on a firefighter’s protective bunker gear. On Tuesday, the teens will participate in emergency medical services training. The campers graduate on Wednesday. In addition to teaching teens about firefighting, organizers said the camp aims to teach them leadership and team-building skills.

Bison tosses man 8 feet in the air at Yellowstone National Park, video shows

A large bison grazing in a lush meadow with wildflowers and a mountain range under a colorful sunset sky

A man was seriously injured after being tossed eight feet into the air by a bull bison in Yellowstone National Park, video shows.  The animal, clearly agitated, appeared to target the man in footage captured Friday at one of the park’s campgrounds. The animal charged toward the visitor, chased him back and forth through a patch of trees, and, ultimately, struck the man with its horns, launching and flipping him over.  The man, 65, suffered serious injuries in the incident and was taken by the park’s emergency responders to a nearby hospital, officials said. Yellowstone has not identified the man publicly. Before the incident, he was seen on video standing beside his grandchild, about 100 yards or so from where the bison was initially lying on the ground, snapping pictures with his phone.  Video of the subsequent encounter, in which the bison stands up and runs over to the man, was filmed by Mike MacLeod, a professional photographer who happened to be at the campground.

MacLeod told “CBS Mornings” that he eventually helped chase the bison away after it had knocked the grandfather over. “I charged the bison, yelling and screaming and kind of been trying to put my camera up in the air,” said MacLeod. “And a bunch of other men joined me, and we successfully hazed the bison off of the, the victim.” Male bison, also called bulls, can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and run at least three times faster than humans, according to the National Park Service, which notes on its website that more people have been injured by bison in Yellowstone than any other animal. Bison “are unpredictable” and may become aggressive when protecting their space, the agency says. Yellowstone visitors are asked to remain at least 25 yards away from wildlife such as bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer moose and coyotes.

They are advised to remain at least 100 yards away from bears, wolves and cougars.  This latest incident involving a Yellowstone bison came just a few weeks after a 12-year-old was hurt by a bison in the park at the end of June. At the time, few details were released about the incident, but officials said an investigation into what happened as underway.  Several bison encounters resulted in injuries to Yellowstone tourists last year. In one of them, a New Jersey man was hurt after being gored by a bison near the park’s famous geyser Old Faithful. In another, a Florida man was gored and injured by a bison in the Lake Village area, where restaurants and hotels are located.

Revival Grips Brazil’s Amazon: ‘We Baptized 14,500 People’

Silhouettes of people paddling canoes on a calm river during colorful sunset

A profound spiritual transformation is unfolding in the Amazon.  For centuries, the Catholic Church held a near-monopoly in the region. Today, evangelical Christianity is reshaping the region’s spiritual fabric, leading to new converts and churches. CBN News traveled to Brazil’s northwest Amazon region to witness it firsthand for this exclusive report. Linger on the banks of the Amazon River and you’ll uncover more than the rich tapestry of life amid the natural splendor.  For many, such as Ramos, the river isn’t just a backdrop; it’s a sanctuary. “My family and I all grew up here. My grandmother, grandfather and my parents lived and died in this house. I was born in this house and I’m also going to die here,” Ramos told CBN News. As an 83-year-old resident of the Amazon River, Ramos refuses to trade his floating bamboo house for life in any Brazilian city.

“It’s so much cooler here than in the city. You cannot walk freely in the city. It’s very dangerous, many cars, many people. I’m free here. I keep my windows open. The doors are always open. At my age, I’ve never faced danger,” Ramos said. Spanning more than 6 million square miles of South America, 60% of the Amazon rain forest is in northwest Brazil. The approximately 30 million Amazonians currently living here are experiencing an unprecedented evangelical revival. “God is everything for me. God is my father and without Jesus I’m nothing,” Ramos told us. Ramos epitomizes this spiritual shift.  Growing up Catholic, he remembers when the faith dominated his riverside community. Not anymore. The Amazon River here in the northern part of Brazil is filled with hundreds of these small tributaries that in essence snake through the jungle, and over the many years evangelical Christians have been traversing these waters in an attempt to bring the good news of Jesus Christ to the Amazonian people.

“Those early days were definitely much, much more difficult than today,” said Josué Bengtson, pastor of Belem Foursquare Church. Bengtson has spent decades traversing the river’s intricate network, first as a missionary then as a pastor spreading the evangelical message of salvation. “Back when we started evangelizing in this region, we had just a few workers and, in some municipalities, pastors had to walk 10 to 15 km to open a congregation,” Bengtson told CBN News. “Today, almost all medium-sized churches in the Amazon have a small boat.” Bengtson helped establish one of the Amazon’s first Foursquare churches.  Today, he says the evangelical presence here is undeniable, with 3,200 Foursquare congregations alone flourishing across the region.

“In the first six months of this year we baptized 14,500 people. Our goal for this year is to baptize over 30,000 people,” said Bengtson. We obtained a video that captures a remarkable mass baptism in the Amazon River, where hundreds including, men, women, the elderly, young adults, and children — publicly profess their faith in Jesus Christ. And this growth goes beyond numbers, reaching the hearts of many like Esequiel Santo.  “I was 15 years old when God called me to reach the unreached peoples of the Amazon,” Santo told CBN News. Santo spent 32 years as a missionary in the jungle’s interior. “One of the biggest challenges was the isolation and getting used to living among the indigenous or riverside communities,” Santo said. “But God was with us in the work, we saw lives being transformed, so many people heard the gospel and now we are seeing the fruits.”

Santo says sharing the gospel here can be full of challenges. “I’m from Rio de Janeiro, and back then since I couldn’t afford a plane ticket, I had to take a 6-day bus journey to Belem. From there I went by boat for another six days to the outskirts of the Amazon basin,” Santo said. “Once I got there, it took at least 15 days by canoe, not a motorized boat, to paddle up the Solimões River and the Purus River, until we reached the remote communities where we worked. Sometimes it would take 35 days just to get to these remote areas.” José Eustaquio Alves, a leading Brazilian sociologist, says evangelical churches here benefit from long term pastors or missionaries like Santo who foster deep community ties and growth.  “The Catholic Church has a lot of difficulty in training new priests, so it is very common to see Catholic Churches in the Amazon but not enough priests to lead congregations,” Dr. Alves said. “A priest goes once a month or once every semester to the Amazon and is often far from the community. Evangelicals, on the other hand, quickly train pastors who integrate into the community and for a long time.” Today, small evangelical churches like this one are springing up in remote riverside communities.

“I think that the revival that we have been waiting for here in Brazil is happening in the Amazon,” said Alves. Brazilian senator and evangelical Pastor Damares Regina Alves sees this movement as a miracle that’s not only reshaping spiritual practices but also fostering a sense of community and empowerment.  “For many years, people looked at the Amazon and only saw rivers and trees. Today, people are beginning to remember that there are people living there who need to be taken care of, need to hear the gospel and whose lives need a transformation. The church is making this revolution happen,” said Alves. Evangelical Christians often must rely on small canoes or medium-sized boats to hold church services and other ministry activities as they reach remote regions. Meanwhile, church teams from Brazil’s major cities send volunteers here to conduct educational, humanitarian, and medical missions.   This outreach often helps introduce people to the gospel message. These pastors, missionaries and many others laboring in this vast expanse believe the shift is more than just a change in religious practice – it’s a movement that promises to redefine the region’s spiritual and social landscape for generations to come.

Police arrest Christian victims after attack on Coptic church

a person with handcuffs

Egyptian police arrested four Christian men who had been assaulted by a mob during an attack on a Coptic place of worship in Egypt, and freed them two days later once they abandoned the complaint they lodged against those who beat them. The attack took place in the Upper Egyptian village of Tal Al-Quiblya in Minya Province on Wednesday, according to the United Kingdom-based religious freedom advocacy group Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), citing the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR). A crowd of Muslim residents, most of them women, children and teenagers, reportedly pelted the building with stones while chanting sectarian abuse. Several Christians suffered injuries. Witnesses on the ground say that the structure and the priest’s car had been damaged. Officers arrived rapidly and restored order, though only after taking the four Christian men into custody. Their release came on Friday, conditioned on the withdrawal of their complaint against the attackers.

An unknown number of Muslim residents were also arrested. No permanent church had existed in the village for many years. Believers gathered for prayers and Sunday services in one another’s houses in rotation, an arrangement that left some unable to attend regularly because of the travel involved. They eventually converted a building among their homes into a place of worship, doing so with the awareness of security officials as well as their Muslim neighbors. The parish priest, Fr. Pavlos Kamal, warned security officials of incitement and harassment at earlier services, according to CSW, which said no preventive action followed before the violence erupted. CSW President Mervyn Thomas said his organization is deeply troubled by the newest assault on believers in the region and by the recurring reluctance of officers to intervene before crowds turned violent. “The fact that four victims of violence were detained and were only released upon withdrawing their complaint against their assailants is a lamentable indication of an abiding inequality before the law,” Thomas said. “We call on local and state authorities to ensure that justice is served, and urge the Egyptian government to increase efforts to crack down on those responsible for the dangerous rhetoric and hate speech that emboldens extremists and mob groups to attack Christians with impunity.”

Christians routinely face legal and social pressure in Egypt. Earlier this year, an Egyptian court dismissed a bid to designate Easter as a national holiday. Judges rejected the request on procedural grounds, ruling that the matter lay with the prime minister and not the courts, and left its substance unaddressed. Sunday counts as a normal workday in Egypt, so believers who take leave for Easter risk forfeiting wages and meeting hostility at their jobs. Pupils and students who skip lessons for the occasion can be penalized academically, according to religious freedom advocacy organization ADF International, which supported the bid. Last December, the Ministry of Labor allowed Christian employees in the private sector to take Easter leave, while excluding those on the public payroll. That same ruling handed Coptic Christians a larger allocation of paid days than it gave Evangelicals or Catholics. Christians constitute close to a tenth of Egypt’s population. The Coptic Church traces its origins to St. Mark’s ministry in Alexandria in the first century.

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom has urged that Egypt be added to the State Department’s Special Watch List, which marks states that have carried out or tolerated grave abuses of religious freedom. Prosecutors have used the country’s blasphemy statutes against people for voicing or defending their beliefs, imposing anything from fines to jail. In January, Augustinos Samaan, a Coptic Christian YouTuber and researcher, was sentenced to five years with hard labor over videos in which he defended his faith. Dozens of comparable prosecutions are before the courts.

Lindsey Graham dies suddenly at 71, remembered as champion for life, an advocate for the persecuted

Man in suit and tie speaking at a Senate podium with American flag in background

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., died unexpectedly on Saturday at age 71 from a “sudden illness” after emergency personnel responded to a call at his Washington home. He is being remembered as a champion for the pro-life cause and an ally to persecuted Christians worldwide. Around 8:30 p.m., emergency services took a call about chest pains at a Capitol Hill residence. About 25 minutes later, personnel said CPR had begun and that a man at the address was in cardiac arrest, The Washington Post reports, citing an emergency responder scanner. In a statement, Graham’s office said he died after a “brief and sudden illness.” Graham ran for president during the 2016 election cycle. He served in the U.S. Senate for over two decades, was an ally of President Donald Trump and often introduced legislation to institute nationwide restrictions on abortion.

An official cause of death has not yet been determined. On Sunday, Trump told NBC News’ “Meet the Press” that Graham was “like a member of the family.” The president praised Graham’s ability to work across the political aisle. “He was such an advocate. If he wanted to get something, he had a unique ability to deal with Democrats and Republicans,” Trump said. “If [I] had a problem – a real problem – I wouldn’t often ask. But if I had a problem with a Democrat, he could work it out. He was a great politician, actually.” On his Truth Social page, Trump called Graham “one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known.” Pro-life and Christian conservative advocacy organizations are mourning Graham’s death. “Lindsey Graham was an unwavering pro-life champion and a friend,” said SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser, who added, “There will be no replacements for Lindsey Graham.” “A man of vision and tenacity, he gave wise counsel and advocacy in countless difficult moments fighting for the rights of the unborn child. He expended himself to the work he was called to do, stepping up when no one else would.

On the fundamental value of the not-yet-born child to live, he said to all who would listen: ‘It’s not about geography!’ Indeed, his ability to persuade transcended geographic and political boundaries.” Tony Perkins, president of the Washington-based Family Research Council, called Graham a “true leader” and a “voice for the defenseless.” “He used his influence to advance the cause of life. When others grew quiet, Lindsey stepped forward and gave his colleagues a way to speak — clearly, courageously, and compassionately — about the dignity of every human life. He was also a consistent advocate for persecuted Christians around the world, those who suffer simply because they refuse to deny their faith.” Graham had been in good enough health days earlier to travel abroad, and a top staffer said there had been no sign he was feeling unwell before he died, according to NBC News. He had been scheduled to appear on Sunday on “Meet the Press,” the network’s flagship Sunday political program. Graham recently returned from Kyiv, where he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday, CNN notes. Tributes also came from abroad. Ruslan Stefanchuk, the speaker of Ukraine’s parliament, called Graham a steadfast friend who understood that his country’s struggle was a fight for freedom and democracy.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel said the senator had grasped that his country’s safety and America’s could not be separated, and that Israel had lost one of its closest friends. Graham was raised in Central, South Carolina, where the family ran a restaurant and pool hall, and he became the first of his family to attend college before earning a law degree from the University of South Carolina. He served 33 years in the Air Force, the Air Force Reserve and the South Carolina Air National Guard, retiring in 2015 as a colonel. He served in the House from 1995 before winning the Senate seat in 2002 that the retiring Strom Thurmond had held. Graham’s death narrows the Republican majority in the Senate, where the party had held a 53-47 edge and was already braced for the absence of one member, Sen. Mitch McConnell, 84, who has been in the hospital since last month. A spokesperson has said the former GOP leader is continuing to recover without giving further details. Under South Carolina law, Gov. Henry McMaster, a Republican, can appoint a successor immediately to serve until Jan. 3 of next year, when the term ends.

State Republicans must now choose a new nominee, and a special primary is expected by Aug. 11.

Chinese firm markets lifelike humanoid robots as remedy for loneliness

A Chinese robotics company has introduced a line of lifelike humanoid robots built as personal companions, presenting the machines as an answer to loneliness among single adults and older people, according to a video report from news agency Agence France-Presse. UBTech unveiled the U1 series and describes it as the world’s first full-size humanoid robot designed for mass production. The robots use artificial intelligence to hold conversations and respond to a user’s emotions, and the basic model can move its head, eyes and mouth, AFP reported. The company said it had received more than 13,300 pre-orders, with deliveries expected to begin in September.

UBTech priced the robots between $17,600 and $145,700, depending on the features a buyer selects. Reuters reported that the U1 line runs from a robotic torso at 119,800 yuan to full-size models reaching 990,000 yuan, or about $145,835, and that it is sold in male and female versions. The higher-end models carry realistic touches such as visible pores, blood vessels and fingerprints, along with expressive faces and synthetic skin. The company said the robots run on an emotion-focused large language model built for long-term companionship. UBTech is aiming the products at two groups, Michael Tam, chief executive of consumer unit UWORLD, said in the AFP report. He cited a single population in China above 120 million people, and an elderly care sector serving more than 320 million residents older than 60. Tam said the robots would stay loyal and “will love you unconditionally,” describing the product as “a completely new species” devoted to a single owner, according to AFP.

The basic U1 does not perform household chores. UBTech also said the robots are not designed for intimate relationships, at least “for now”. The launch drew attention on Chinese social media, where users debated the prospect of AI “cyber boyfriends” and “cyber girlfriends.” The company’s chief branding officer said China’s market for such robots could expand from tens of billions of yuan to trillions over the following decade.UBTech said it aims to complete deliveries of the U1 series within the year.

The Founders Meant to Keep Government Out of the Church, Not God Out of the Government

Historic study room with open book, quill pens, burning fireplace, and city skyline through window

The 4th of July makes us think of our independence and freedoms. And legal battles in recent years over religious liberty in the U.S.A. raise serious questions about the freedom to worship in America. So when our Founders came up with the First Amendment, were they trying to keep the government free from religion, or religion free from government?   These days, the phrase “wall of separation between church and state” has come to mean keeping God or His believers from having a big effect on government and public life. But that’s far, far from what the Founding Fathers were thinking of when they were separating church and state.

Fear of an All-Powerful State Church Wed to the Power of the Government

They were afraid of what so many of the Old World countries had: a religion established by the state as its one true religion, that would tyrannically rule over the faith and conscience of every citizen. As the Providence Forum’s Peter Lillback put it, “They recognized having a monolithic church was a dangerous thing.”  That’s because it made the king not only their physical sovereign but also their all-powerful spiritual ruler. Before the Pilgrims fled England, Wallbuilders’ David Barton recalled, “The Pilgrims’ pastor was executed because he made the statement that Jesus Christ is head of the church. And the monarch said, ‘Oh no, I’m the head of the church. You’re dead.’”

Wouldn’t Allow a Church of America Like the Brits Had the Church of England

Knowing of such terror and tyranny, AmericanMinute.com historian William Federer explained how the Founders felt: “Their big fear was the federal government was going to follow the blueprint of every country in Europe and pick one national denomination.” So what they meant by saying in the First Amendment “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion” was that the federal government was banned from creating – or “establishing” – a national religion with the national government wedded to it. “They didn’t want to have a national, established Church of America like you have the Church of England, forcing people to believe something that they didn’t believe in,” said Jerry Newcombe, host of the radio program “Vocal Point”. “What they said was, ‘We don’t want a state church here. Consciously, therefore, they were separating the church from government,” Lillback said. But that was strictly to protect the churches and each believer’s faith and conscience from the government.

All About Protecting Each American’s Conscience and Freedom to Believe

Not only did the First Amendment say, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,” but it also said, “or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” “What they wanted was the freedom that we have in the Bible: the rights of conscience,” Barton said. “And they didn’t want the state telling us how we could or couldn’t practice our faith.” Lillback said the Founders keeping government control away from faith meant, “Each of us has a right to be who we are before God. It has been well said and it’s a classic statement of religious liberty that man is not free unless he is free on the inside.  We have to have the freedom to believe what we believe. That’s what the First Amendment protects.”

God: He’s on Both Sides of the Wall’

And that’s what Christian historian Eddie Hyatt explained Thomas Jefferson was talking about when he wrote the letter that first used the famous “wall of separation” phrase to a group of worried Baptists. “He said that the First Amendment had erected a wall of separation that would protect them from any intrusion of the government,” Hyatt stated. “In Jefferson’s mind, the wall of separation was a uni-directional wall, put there to keep the government out of the church; not to keep the influence of the church out of the government.” There was no antipathy towards the Lord in all of this, Lillback insisted, saying, “But the idea of God: He’s on both sides of the wall. And He’s welcome there. And He should be.”

The Government Is Reaching Over that Wall, Bossing Around People of Faith

But today, there’s been a complete flip. Lillback said, “Those who once believed in this really high and impregnable wall of church and state, we now see the government reaching over that wall and saying, ‘but don’t preach that text of scripture.’”   Barton added, “All of a sudden the government’s regulating religious activities, which is what Jefferson said they would not do because of separation of church and state.” Hyatt lamented, “The Founders would be so distressed to see how that statement has been turned on its head.” As Newcombe explained, “They absolutely did not mean the separation of God and government, which is what’s often being practiced today.”

No One ‘Under Government,’ but Each One

‘Under God’ Lillback encourages Americans to remember what the nation’s Founders intended. “This is a theistic government. So God was not separated from government,” he insisted. “So any interpretation of the First Amendment that takes God out of government is turning the whole story on its head. Rather it was taking a formal state church out of the equation, leaving it up to each individual. But all, as we still say, ‘under God.’ That was the view of our Founders.” They believed a nation based on liberty could only stay free if its citizens were godly people. As Barton pointed out, believers in God have their eyes on eternity, and it makes them practice self-control.

Knowing You’ll Answer to God

Makes You Govern Yourself “When you’re God-conscious, you realize, ‘ya know, I’m going to have to answer to Him for what I do,’ and it limits my bad behavior,” Barton stated. Newcombe added, “That’s something the Founders believed very strongly: that we’re going to be accountable before God.” Hyatt said of those Founders, “They knew that they were creating a nation for a free people, but also for a virtuous people who would govern themselves from within.” You need very little police power if people, because of conscience, will police themselves.

Green Bean Control Laws?

“Self-control is what you need,” Barton explained. “We can pass all the control laws we want. But unless you control the heart, you’ll never control behavior. I mean, I can kill somebody with a can of green beans. What are we going to do?  Pass green bean control laws if somebody does that? No. It’s on the inside.” And the Founders knew to keep America true and free, they also needed the perfect law of a loving, all-wise God. As Lillback put it, “There was a clear understanding that the government needed to have an ultimate check and balance, even beyond the people that ran it and their elections. And that is the transcendent law of God.  And so that is why when we look at our Declaration of Independence, there are four references to Deity.” Going through the Declaration, Lillback laid them out: “‘We’re endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights.’ The laws of God and nature. And it tells us there’s an appeal to the Supreme Judge of the world. And, finally, a dependence on the Providence of God. Four references to Deity.”

Not Godless at All

But then came the US Constitution, which some say is a godless document because God isn’t mentioned in it. As soon as they were done with it, though, the Founders called for a day of Thanksgiving to God. “They were not thinking ‘let’s get rid of God,'” Lillback stated. “They said, ‘We have been given now a new Constitution, and now amendments that give us our freedoms. And where do we turn? We turn to heaven and thank God for this.'” “Now, if their intent was to get rid of God from government, boy did they miss their point,” Lillback said.  “Because they turned around and thanked Him for everything that they had. It shows the utter historical absurdity of ‘the godless Constitution’.”

Constitution’s Last Words Reference

Christ And God isn’t really absent from the Constitution or its authors’ lives. “They are not godless,” Lillback insisted. “They are people who, at the very end of their work, said, ‘In the year of our Lord, 1787.’  The very last words in the Constitution are a reference to Jesus Christ.” He concluded, “It’s no surprise then that the ultimate motto is We are One Nation Under God.”

‘A choice to die will become a duty to die’: Churches challenge assisted dying plan for the Isle of Man

person monitoring a dextrose

Churches on the Isle of Man are urging members of parliament to reject an assisted dying bill they say is rushed and fails to protect vulnerable people. Churches Alive in Mann represents the Church of England, Methodist Church, Catholic Church, United Reformed Church, Living Hope, Elim Onchan, Salvation Army, and Broadway Baptist. The bill is not yet law. Royal Assent was declined once over human rights concerns raised by the U.K. Ministry of Justice, and following amendments in June, the bill has been re-submitted. If assent is not granted by Aug. 13 — when the Manx parliament, known as the House of Keys, dissolves for general elections — the bill would fall. The Rev. Bill Leishman, minister of Broadway Baptist Church and assisted dying spokesman for Churches Alive in Mann, told Christian Daily International the bill was not “a done deal.” “In reality, there is still a slim chance that it will fall,” said Leishman. “Lots of Christians on this Island are praying for this,” he said. “

As to concerns should the Bill pass, the biggest issue is the impact on vulnerable people.” Leishman said the churches had noted real evidence of coercion in contexts where assisted dying has been legalized, including in Canada, the Netherlands, and Belgium. “Even without explicit and hard-to-spot coercion, there would be a subtle societal pressure,” he added. “In Oregon [U.S.], over the last few years, roughly half of people who have died through the Death With Dignity Act stated burden on family or loved ones as a reason to choose an assisted death,” said Leishman. Too many elderly or vulnerable people already feel a burden to their families, he said, without adding the pressure of assisted dying. “We are also deeply concerned about the impact this has on suicide prevention. To say to one group of people ‘Your life is worth living’ while facilitating another group to end their lives is a mismatch of values.” Leishman said the death penalty had been abolished on the Isle of Man and in the U.K. decades ago because innocent people were killed — a punishment with no remedy.

He drew a direct comparison with the bill’s effect on vulnerable people and said, “it’s the same.” “How many vulnerable people would be needlessly killed, or how many people might be coerced without detection?” he asked. “How many of those would make it worthwhile to give others a choice? We believe the risk is too great.” “Alongside our Christian calling to speak up for the voiceless and to protect the neediest in our society, the Churches on the Isle of Man are clear that life is sacred. “We have consistently called to fund Hospice more adequately, as the only safe way to help people have an end of life choice and a good death.” Churches Alive in Mann issued a statement last month titled “Response to Assisted Dying Bill Amendments,” raising concerns about the safety of the proposed law with particular focus on the most vulnerable members of Manx society. The churches welcomed several protections in the proposed Tynwald Amendments regarding mental capacity, coercion and reporting, but said “deep concerns” remained. Key protections had been “very rushed” without the usual parliamentary scrutiny, they said. The churches said the island’s democratic processes had never seen such a quick turnaround — apart from minor procedural changes — certainly not on matters of life and death.

Calling for fuller scrutiny, the churches raised concerns about the impact on hospice and palliative care funding, alongside concerns from the Isle of Man Medical Society: that the bill would spark a healthcare recruitment crisis, leave vulnerable patients exposed to undetectable coercion, and force clinicians to make unreliable life-expectancy predictions. Specific concerns remained about the requirement that an attending doctor in an assisted dying case need not have specific experience in diagnosing or managing terminal illness. With only one medical professional required — and that person not required to be a doctor despite the risk of complications — the churches warned of a lack of transparency or protection against coercion. A doctor would also be free to ignore conclusions of safeguarding and psychiatric referrals in certain circumstances, and the churches said conscientious objectors could face unemployment if they refuse to participate. “The very existence of this legislation will inevitably cause some of our elderly, disabled or vulnerable people to feel more of a burden,” the churches said in their joint statement.

“More worrying still, we believe the proposed amendments don’t go far enough in guarding against coercion. “As churches, we are often there to support people experiencing pain and difficulty, and we speak up now out of deep concern and compassion for all who would be impacted by this legislation. “For thousands of years, ‘Do not kill’ has been an ethical foundation for many civilisations. We believe that all human life is a sacred gift from God. The value of any member of our society is not determined by variable measures of the quality of life. The premature ending of individual lives will inevitably diminish the high value we place on all lives.” The churches called on Tynwald members to reject the rushed package of amendments. Dr. Graham McAll, a retired family physician on the Isle of Man and a member of Manx Duty of Care — an informal group of healthcare workers, social care workers, and others opposed to the bill — told Christian Daily International that the U.K. Ministry of Justice, which advises King Charles III, determined the bill lacked basic human rights protections under the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).

“Under ECHR, governments are required to protect the lives of their citizens, especially the vulnerable,” said McAll. “This Bill failed on that count and had no independent review mechanism for deaths.” A short timescale before the election led to “some inadequate rushed corrections” being proposed, bypassing the usual process, he said. For that reason, Manx Duty of Care issued a warning of a possible legal challenge in the European Court before the amendments were voted through. Now that the bill is back with the Ministry of Justice, McAll expressed concern that any resulting law could lead to unnecessary deaths. “We are very worried that this Bill could shorten people’s lives unnecessarily, that doctors will make mistakes in their prognosis, that abuse victims will be coerced, that palliative care will be undermined and underfunded, and that, in the end, a choice to die will become for many a duty to die,” said McAll.

“We, Manx Duty of Care, along with the charity Autism In Man, the Isle of Man Medical Society, and all the church denominations on the Island are firmly against this Bill. It is clear from Canada, Holland, and Belgium that once euthanasia is normalized, it spreads to those without terminal illness, and undue influence becomes common. And no drugs are licensed for this purpose anywhere in the world.” McAll called for competent Christians to stand for political election on the basis of the assisted dying issue and other relevant matters. “All candidates in the upcoming election will need to be quizzed hard on their attitude to this complex issue. Planned Parenthood Can Get Taxpayer Funding Again as Republicans Fail to Renew Ban

Pro-life advocates are outraged at Republicans in Congress after they allowed a one-year ban on taxpayer funds for Planned Parenthood to expire. As of July 5, Planned Parenthood clinics can once again bill the federal government for services such as contraception and health screenings. Medicaid payments amount to more than $800 million in revenue to Planned Parenthood, according to The Hill.  Sign the petition to permanently end tax-funded abortion. Marjorie Dannenfelser, the president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, highlighted the fundamental American freedoms stripped away from unborn life in the nation due to the expired ban.

“Thanks to Majority Leader Thune, Speaker Mike Johnson, and our pro-life majority in Congress we saw a historic victory last year when taxpayers were no longer forced to prop up an industry that profits from killing babies in the womb. Now this hard-won progress stands on the brink of reversal. On our nation’s 250th anniversary when we celebrate the self-evident truth that all men are created equal with the unalienable right to life, our taxpayer dollars will once again flow to abortion businesses that profit from the destruction of nearly half a million unborn children every year,” said Dannenfelser.  Dannenfelser is pushing for Republicans to fix the problem with new pro-life measures.

“Defunding Big Abortion is now the default expectation of the pro-life movement. When they return to D.C., Republicans must do all they can through reconciliation to once again block taxpayer dollars from Planned Parenthood and abortion businesses,” Dannenfelser added.

Other pro-life groups are more aggressively criticizing the GOP leadership for allowing the funding ban to expire. Students for Life Action has now given every legislator an “F” on its pro-life report card. Students For Life leader Kristan Hawkins points out that healthcare money is a tool either used for or against the pro-life cause. “The bottom line, pro-life voters want to see healthcare money invested with those who intend for their patients to survive with their lives and fertility intact,” Hawkins said in a press release.

Georgia Secretary of State opens investigation into voter registration mailers sent to deceased residents

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger announced Thursday that his office has opened an investigation into Ready to Register and other third-party organizations after reports that voter registration mailers were sent to deceased Georgians and other ineligible recipients. According to the Secretary of State’s Office, election officials have received numerous complaints about voter registration solicitations being mailed to people who have died. In one unusual case cited by the office, a deceased family dog reportedly received one of the mailers. State officials said they are reviewing whether the mailings violate Georgia law or otherwise undermine confidence in the state’s election system.

The Secretary of State’s Office said third-party voter registration groups frequently conduct mass mail campaigns ahead of major elections but often rely on commercial databases that can contain outdated or inaccurate information, unlike Georgia’s official voter registration system. “Groups like this highlight the unreliability of commercial data,” Raffensperger said in a statement. “Georgia maintains one of the cleanest voter rolls in the nation through continuous list maintenance and citizenship verification. These outside organizations don’t use those standards. Instead, they flood mailboxes with inaccurate solicitations that confuse voters and waste election officials’ time.” Raffensperger also thanked voters who alerted his office to the mailings. “I want to thank the voters who have flagged the inaccurate mailings and sent them to our office,” he said. “Whether checking their ballots for accuracy or keeping their own registration information up to date, voters are a crucial line of defense in election security.” Georgia officials said the issue mirrors problems recently identified in North Carolina, where election officials warned residents about similar mailings from Ready to Register. According to the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office, North Carolina officials said the organization mailed registration forms to deceased individuals, used outdated forms, listed incorrect election office addresses and included QR codes that raised privacy concerns.

Raffensperger criticized the mass mailing campaigns, saying they create confusion while increasing the workload for local election offices. “Whether intentional or simply reckless, these mail campaigns operate like a grift — raising money and generating activity while shifting the costs onto taxpayers, election officials, and voters,” Raffensperger said. “Georgia taxpayers should not have to clean up the mess created by organizations that prioritize volume over accuracy.” The Secretary of State’s Office is encouraging Georgians to verify their voter registration through the state’s My Voter Page and says voters who are already registered at their current address should disregard unsolicited voter registration mailers.

Shepherd Center makes hiking accessible for all, encouraging outdoor activities for better brain health

Person in motorized wheelchair on accessible forest loop trail surrounded by green trees

The Shepherd Center offered a free hiking and bird watching clinic at Panola Mountain State Park to encourage people with cognitive and physical impairments to get outside and enjoy the outdoors. The clinic is one of many events the neurorehabilitation hospital offers throughout the year. “We do biking, water, skiing, ski shooting, riflery, art, horticulture, anything we can get someone’s interest and get them out of the house and continue to stay active,” said Katie Harmon, the health and wellness coordinator for the Shepherd Center.  “My favorite are the birding outings and my second favorite. Are these hikes and then our nature based and get me out in the woods,” said Maggie Smith, a participant.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources provided rugged terrain-friendly wheelchairs through their Outdoors Beyond Barriers program. Georgia State Parks rangers and Feathers with Furr helped with the tour. “Obviously, there is going to be a physical component that benefits people: getting out of bed, getting out of the house, you’re learning a new skill, but the social aspect is huge,” said Harmon.  “We all have kind of similar lived experiences; there’s nothing like being around a community that can share those lived experiences with you,” said Smith. Smith says she notices the mental health benefits of doing events with the center. “Since I have been doing activities, outdoors, more, I can feel from firsthand experience that my mental health is better, my excitement to get outside is higher and I just can’t get enough of it,” said Smith. The Shepherd Center has 80 recreational therapy clinics this year. They’re open to anyone with physical or cognitive impairments.

Fetterman and McCormick form bipartisan joint fundraising committee

Two men shaking hands silhouetted against the US Capitol dome and sunset with Washington Monument in background

Pennsylvania’s two U.S. senators have teamed up to form a joint fundraising committee to raise money for their campaigns in an unusual display of bipartisanship — and one that may not actually be meant to generate funds. Common Ground PA filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Monday. The joint fundraising committee lists both Fetterman and McCormick’s leadership PACs as well as their principal campaign committees as the participants. “The joint fundraising committee is specifically just for raising money,” said Brendan Glavin, the director of insights for non-partisan political transparency organization OpenSecrets. In a joint fundraising committee, only the participants are allowed to receive money donated to the committee.

“They can’t make contributions to other candidates or other PACs.”  Fetterman is up for reelection in the 2028 cycle, while McCormick is not up for reelection until 2030. The most recent FEC filings show Fetterman for PA has about $1.99 million in cash on hand, while McCormick has about $954,000.  Politico was the first to note the joint fundraising committee’s formation earlier this week. When KDKA-TV asked if he’d ever seen campaigns from opposite sides of the aisle form a joint fundraising committee, Glavin said, “I’m not gonna say it’s never happened, but certainly, I was definitely very surprised to see that.”  Glavin said the campaigns may be trying to appeal to a certain kind of donor, and the committee may be more about messaging than money. “The goal may be more to present both of them as being people who are willing to work with the other side. That is something that is attractive to voters, to say ‘I’m not part of this hyper-partisan problem that we have in our country.'”  But Glavin also said the message may have niche appeal. “Certainly most of your donors are not gonna be keen on the idea of giving their money to basically the opposite side of where they stand.”  Neither Fetterman nor McCormick has positive approval with Pennsylvania voters. A Quinnipiac poll in February 2026 found 46% approve of Fetterman’s job performance overall, while 37% approve of McCormick’s handling of his job. Fetterman has also come under fire from within his own party.

Triple-digit heat, along with increased rain chances expected for North Texas this weekend

Friday is off to another warm start across North Texas, with temperatures in the 70s and 80s. Throughout the day, highs reach the 100° mark once again with feels-like temperatures as hot as 105°, and expect breezy winds with gusts up to 25 mph. These steamy temperatures continue into this weekend. There is a very slim chance of showers on Saturday, with a much better chance of isolated to scattered storms on Sunday. Rain chances return at 30%, as a boundary approaches from the north.

While no severe storms are expected across the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, these storms may contain gusty winds, some hail and heavy downpours.  One thing to monitor with these storms is the risk of flooding if they remain over the same area for an extended period. The chance of rain continues next week, and with the additional cloud cover, temperatures fall below average in the lower 90s. This cooldown will be short-lived as all signs point toward the triple digits returning by next weekend.

Meals on Wheels pleads for volunteers to assist North Texas seniors

Volunteer kneeling delivering food container and bread at house doorstep

Under the clearest, brightest blue skies– Meals on Wheels staffers are navigating a perfect summer storm: more demand and rising gas prices that could discourage potential volunteers. And in both Dallas and Tarrant County, the agencies are desperate for more helping hands. “The need is great,” shares Inga Wilson, Vice President of Meals on Wheels with the Visiting Nurse Association in Dallas.  “Right now, if we don’t have enough volunteers and drivers to deliver the meals, then some of the seniors won’t get their hot meals today.” Behind Wilson, at the Dallas distribution center, the bright red and blue coolers are packed, stacked and loaded.

Volunteers are arriving at a brisk pace– Wilson just wishes there were more of them.  She knows that it’s costing those drivers more to make those deliveries. “Totally worth it. I don’t even think about the gas,” says Mom and new volunteer Elizabeth Orozco. Orozco even brings her two kids along– a teen and a tween– to ride along. She says it’s great family time as they get to be meal delivery DJs.  And. She wants them to see compassion, up close. “You know, you see a little glimmer of hope in them, that someone is going to do something for them. So maybe it’s like they don’t have family out here or they don’t have many connections,” shares Orozco, her eyes filling with tears.  “And I feel like when we go and deliver, we, we, we give that hope to them.”

David Crisp, a retiree, has volunteered for years.  He, too, takes the extra gas expense in stride… saying many of his meal delivery clients have become friends. “You know, I’m not curing world hunger,” adds Crisp, “but if everybody did a little bit, it’d be a better place.” Even within the organization, everyone lends a hand.  Everyone.  On this day, VNA President and CEO Chris Culak is pulling up to the dock and loading up meals to deliver. “It reminds me of why we do what we do,” says Culak.  “So, I try to deliver my route every week so I can knock on the door, talk to those clients, see how they’re doing, really be part of what we’re asking volunteers to do.” Throughout North Texas, there are more disabled and homebound seniors needing meals than the agencies have the capacity to support: it’s 5-10 routes going uncovered in Dallas County every day, but in Tarrant County, there are some 40 routes needing volunteers.

“Any volunteer who volunteers for us, [it ]usually takes an hour, hour and a half a day,” says Philip Gonzalez with Tarrant County Meals on Wheels.  “So, if you have that amount of time, one day a week, you’re really going to make a difference in our clients’ lives.” And as the summertime temps settle in, the meal deliveries also allow volunteers to provide quick, but critical checks on whether seniors’ homes are staying cool.  And the warm hearts? “I love that we get to help people every day,” says Wilson, as the memories rush back… and she blinks to hold back the emotions that follow. The warm hearts are just an occupational hazard. “That’s my life’s purpose,” says Wilson.  “How do I help make people’s lives better? Each and every day? We get to do that here.” For more information on how to volunteer in either Dallas or Tarrant County, check out https://volunteer.vnatexas.org/landing

Fetterman tells those who backed Platner to “sit it out” on a possible replacement

Man standing on terrace with U.S. Capitol building illuminated in background at dusk

Democratic Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania said members of the party who helped prop up Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner amid a string of scandals should not play a role in selecting his potential replacement if he drops out of the race.  “Many of these people that put someone like Platner in this seat right now, sit it out,” Fetterman said in an interview with “The Takeout with Major Garrett” on Tuesday.  Fetterman condemned his colleagues in Congress and others who continued backing Platner after problematic internet comments he made years ago came to light, his admission that he once had a tattoo widely associated with a Nazi emblem, and allegations of sexually explicit texts and concerning behavior toward women.

A Maine woman he previously dated, Jenny Racicot, told Politico and CNN that Platner sexually assaulted her in 2021 — which Platner denied — leading the candidate to lose the support of top Democrats. Among those who called for Platner to drop out was Sen. Bernie Sanders, a Vermont independent, who said in a statement Tuesday that he spoke with Platner “about the best path forward for Maine” and “recommended that he step aside.”  “How have we arrived here?” Fetterman said. “That I think is an important thing to explore and the people that really made that possible … hold them accountable too.”  Fetterman specifically called out Sanders, saying he put Platner on the map “more than anyone.”  In an interview with Fox News on Monday, Fetterman called on Sanders “to apologize to the victims.”

Spot them and stomp them: Georgians asked to help stop spread of invasive spotted lanternfly

A bright and colorful insect wants to make Georgia its new home, and officials want you to kill it as quickly as you possibly can. A native of Asia, the spotted lanternfly was first identified in the United States in 2014, northwest of Philadelphia. It’s likely that insect eggs came over with a load of landscaping stones. Twelve years later, there are reported infestations in 21 states, from the Midwest to the East Coast. Georgia’s first live population was found in 2024. Since then, the Peach State has had 79 reports of the species, all in Fulton County. The insect has been able to spread so far, so fast because it is a sneaky hitchhiker.

Drivers in the summer unwittingly give lifts to adults, which look like moths, perched inside trunks, on wheel wells, or on bumpers. Cars can also carry the insect’s eggs, which can hatch miles away from where they were laid. What makes the lanternfly such a threat is its appetite. The insect feeds on a variety of plants, including grapes, hops, and hardwood trees. As it eats, it emits a sticky fluid that can lead to the growth of sooty mold, which also damages the plants. “We urge all Georgians to remain vigilant. While spotted lanternflies do not directly threaten human health, they can severely impact our number one industry—agriculture,” the Georgia Department of Agriculture wrote. What do spotted lanternflies look like? Spotted lanternfly egg masses hold 30 to 50 eggs and look like wet gray putty before turning a brown that’s similar to cracked mud. The insect lays its eggs in the fall, winter, and spring. From March to June, juvenile nymphs start growing. These tiny insects are black with white spots that turn red as they grow older.

The adult spotted lanternflies are around 1.5 inches long and have a yellow, black-barred abdomen. Their wings are highly recognizable, with brown forewings speckled with black spots and bright scarlet hind wings that turn into black and white at the ends. The insects frequently gather together while feeding and are easiest to spot at dusk or at night, officials say. What to do if you spot a spotted lanternfly in Georgia If you see a spotted lanternfly, Georgia officials say you should follow three simple steps. First, take a clear picture of the insect. Second, squish it. Third, send in a report to the Georgia Department of Agriculture, giving as many details as possible about where you found the insect.

Supreme Court expands presidential firing power, overturning 90-year-old ruling

The Supreme Court on Monday ruled that removal protections for members of the Federal Trade Commission are unconstitutional and overturned a 90-year-old decision that allowed Congress to shield members of certain independent agencies from being fired by the president at will. The decision from the high court expands the president’s power over many independent boards and commissions, which Congress had insulated from political pressure by saying their members could only be removed by the president for cause. In a 1935 decision in a case known as Humphrey’s Executor v. United States, which involved removal protections for the FTC, the Supreme Court said Congress could restrict the president’s ability to fire officials from multi-member agencies at will.  But the ruling from the high court’s conservative majority in the case Trump v. Slaughter overturns that 90-year-old decision and marks the culmination of a years-long weakening of the New Deal-era precedent.

The court’s ruling The ruling was 6 to 3, with Chief Justice John Roberts writing for the majority, joined by the other conservative justices. The three liberals dissented, and Justice Sonia Sotomayor read a summary of her dissent from the bench, a rare occurrence that signals strong disagreement with a decision. Roberts wrote that limits on the president’s ability to fire those who wield executive power on his behalf infringe on his constitutional authority. The FTC of today, the court’s majority found, “unquestionably” exercises executive powers and therefore must be under the president’s control. “Although it is up to the Senate to decide whether to confirm those with whom the President would prefer to work, neither Congress nor the courts may saddle him with those with whom he cannot work,” Roberts wrote. “Subordinates who exercise the President’s power are subject to removal by him. Then, and only then, can they remain accountable to the President, and the President to the people.”

The decision is likely to have ramifications beyond the FTC. Congress has created more than two dozen multi-member agencies led by officials who can be removed by the president only for cause, which typically means instances of inefficiency, neglect of duty or malfeasance in office. Among those agencies likely to be affected by the Supreme Court’s ruling are the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the National Labor Relations Board. In a dissenting opinion joined by Justices Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson, Sotomayor warned that while those agencies remain, they now take on a new form that differs from what Congress intended when they were created. “Put simply, today the majority reshapes our Government. Dozens of independent commissions are now likely to become purely executive agencies, shifting tremendous power over broad swaths of American life into the President’s hands,” she wrote. President Trump cheered the decision as the “Greatest Increase in Presidential Power in the last 100 years. Such a Monumental Ruling at such an important time!”

The Slaughter case Mr. Trump has sought to test the bounds of his executive power since returning to the White House for his second term in January 2025, including by firing a slew of officials appointed by Democratic presidents at multi-member boards and commissions without cause. Among those was Rebecca Slaughter, whom Mr. Trump appointed to the FTC during his first term. She was reappointed to the trade commission by President Joe Biden.  Slaughter was informed in March 2025 that her service on the FTC was “inconsistent” with the Trump administration’s priorities and was fired from her post without cause. That clashed with the law that established the FTC in 1914, when Congress said commissioners could only be removed for inefficiency, neglect of duty or malfeasance in office. Slaughter filed a lawsuit challenging her removal and argued Mr. Trump broke the law when he fired her. A federal district court ruled in her favor and ordered Slaughter to be reinstated to her post. The U.S. appeals court in Washington, D.C., eventually agreed that she could continue in her job at the trade commission, but last September, the Supreme Court allowed Mr. Trump to fire her while it considered the legality of removal protections for FTC members.

Before agreeing to decide Slaughter’s case, the Supreme Court had also cleared the way for Mr. Trump to oust members of the National Labor Relations Board, Merit Systems Protection Board and Consumer Product Safety Commission. But the high court has so far spared two other officials from removal while litigation continues: Lisa Cook, a member of the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors, and Shira Perlmutter, the register of copyrights. The justices heard arguments in January over whether to allow Mr. Trump to fire Cook from the Fed Board. The Supreme Court has indicated before that it views the Fed differently than other independent agencies, calling it a “uniquely structured, quasi-private entity that follows in the distinct historical tradition of the First and Second Banks.” In an opinion also authored by Roberts, the high court rejected Mr. Trump’s attempt to fire Cook while the challenge to her removal moved forward.  The Supreme Court reiterated in its ruling involving the FTC that it does not implicate the constitutionality of the Fed’s removal restrictions. It also stressed that the decision does not address tenure protections for judges on the U.S. Tax Court or the Court of Federal Claims, with Roberts writing that the justices are leaving “those questions for another day.”

“All we do today is recognize what has been clear for a century — that those who fall within the President’s ‘general administrative control’ must be removable by the President at will,” he wrote. The high court’s decision in Slaughter’s case is the latest in a line of recent decisions that chipped away at Humphrey’s Executor and expanded the president’s power over independent agencies. The Supreme Court invalidated removal protections for the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in 2020 and the head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency in 2021.

John Deere owners will get the right to repair their own equipment under a new FTC settlement

It looks like John Deere owners can soon feel free to fix their own machines. The Federal Trade Commission and attorneys general from several states secured a right-to-repair settlement Wednesday with agriculture equipment giant Deere & Co. — commonly known as John Deere — that requires the company to let farmers and independent shops fix their own equipment. The Illinois-based manufacturer has faced complaints for years for withholding the software needed for repairs and forcing customers to use authorized dealers instead of independent ones. This marks the second right-to-repair settlement Deere has reached this year, following a separate $99 million class-action settlement with farmers in April. Though the class-action compensated consumers, the FTC’s settlement instead requires Deere to make its repair services available to equipment owners and independent shops.

The FTC and attorneys general from Arizona, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin brought the antitrust lawsuit in January 2025, arguing that Deere had illegally restricted farmers and independent shops that might otherwise service them from repairing farm equipment such as tractors. Deere also makes engines and equipment for forestry, landscaping and construction. Under the order filed in Illinois, Deere will now be required to make diagnostic and repair tools available to equipment owners and independent repair shops, not only its own network of authorized dealers. It also prevents Deere dealers from retaliating against equipment owners or repair shops who choose to fix their own equipment instead of paying for Deere’s services. The order is headed to Judge Iain D. Johnston for his approval. “For too long, Arizona farmers and independent mechanics have been at the mercy of Deere’s monopoly over repair tools, forced to wait — and pay — for authorized dealers just to fix broken tractors and other equipment,” Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes said in a statement Wednesday. Deere must pay $1 million collectively to the five states for antitrust enforcement costs and will be subject to strict compliance oversight for the next 10 years.

In the complaint, the FTC argued that Deere provides a service software tool to authorized dealers but does not provide the full version to equipment owners or independent shops. Deere had said the lawsuit was baseless, denied that its distribution of service tools was anticompetitive and argued that it could not monopolize services since it does not directly provide them. Deere maintained its commitment to independent repair in a statement Wednesday, adding that the agreement with the FTC reinforces its innovation of more flexible repair options. “This is good news for our customers and for the future of how Deere equipment is supported,” said Denver Caldwell, vice president of aftermarket and customer support. Right-to-repair has become an increasingly common issue over the years, especially for tech products, with consumers complaining that even simple repairs can only be done by company-authorized dealers.
