Trusting God With What You Can’t Control

knight

Scripture: Proverbs 3:5–6

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart…”

Devotion:
Have you ever noticed that the majority of our fear comes from trying to control outcomes? God never meant for to manage these things that freak us out causing this fear. Trust grows when we surrender the illusion of control and confidently placing our confidence in God’s wisdom. Peace comes from trust and faith, not assuredness.

Reflection:
What are you trying to control that needs to be surrendered?

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for always being the light when I need to see what is going on. Lord, I release control and choose to trust You with what I cannot change. In Jesus Name Amen

You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill can’t be hidden. Neither do you light a lamp and put it under a measuring basket, but on a stand; and it shines to all who are in the house. Even so, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Dear Heavenly Father, be my guide and protect me from these things that surround me that I do not understand or that influence me in ways that are not from You. Lord I want to be and act as close to You as You’ve always wanted Your children to be. Lord give the strength to stand against the evil in this world, the distractions and influences. Scripture: Philippians 4:7

“And the peace of God… will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Devotion:
God’s peace is not just blanket for comfort, it guards. This peace is like a sentry at the door, a peace that stands watch over your heart and mind. When fear tries to enter this peace reminds us that God is still in control. This guarding peace is not earned; it is received as we trust Him.

Colossians 1:14-23: The Power of Christ’s Forgiveness Explained

judge

The Superiority of Christ

In whom we have our redemption, the forgiveness of our sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created in the heavens and on the earth, visible things and invisible things, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.

All things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things are held together. He is the head of the body, the assembly, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he might have the preeminence. For all the fullness was pleased to dwell in him, and through him to reconcile all things to himself by him, whether things on the earth or things in the heavens, having made peace through the blood of his cross.

You, being in past times alienated and enemies in your mind in your evil deeds, yet now he has reconciled in the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and without defect and blameless before him, if it is so that you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the Good News which you heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, of which I, Paul, was made a servant.

The Source of True Peace

distractions in the office

Scripture: John 14:27

“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you.”

Devotion:
The world offers peace that depends on circumstances, when things are going good, peace stays; when they don’t, the peace disappears. Jesus offers a different kind of peace. His peace flows from who He is, not from what is going on around us. When we stay connected to Him, peace becomes a settled confidence rather than a fragile feeling. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. John 14:27

Reflection:
Where have you been looking for peace outside of Christ?

From Anxiety to Prayer

Scripture: Philippians 4:6

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

Devotion:
Anxiety is a form of misplaced focus. Paul does not condemn anxious thoughts, instead he redirects them. With every anxious thought becoming an invitation to pray. By bringing our fears to God, we shift the burden from our shoulders to His. Prayer is not a way to ignore reality; it places our reality in God’s hands.

Reflection:
What anxiety do you need to turn into prayer today?

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for being the One that I can depend on when everything seems to be falling apart. I bring You what I’ve been worrying about instead of carrying it alone. Be the light in the darkness. In Jesus Name Amen

Recognizing the Noise

News drive

Scripture: John 16:33

“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Devotion:
Have you ever noticed that fear will only grow louder when we live constantly connected to the noise of this world. Watching the News, the differing opinions, and the endless updates can quietly shape our hearts more than we realize. If we read the red letters in the Bible we can see that Jesus never promised a trouble-free life. However, He did promise victory while walking through it when in the middle of it. Peace begins when we understand that the noise around us does not have the final word Christ does.

Reflection:
What voices have been shaping your thoughts lately?

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, please help me recognize the voices that stir fear in my heart. Help me block out the noise and teach me to listen more closely to Your voice of truth and peace. Thank you for being my guide. In Jesus Name Amen

When Everything Shakes, God Remains

volcano

Scripture: Hebrews 12:26–28; Psalm 46

Introduction

Currently we are living in a time when it feels like everything is shaking. Nations are trembling. Economies feel uncertain. Families are under pressure. Even long-held beliefs seem to be questioned daily. Many people are asking, “What if anything can I trust anymore?”

When an earthquake strikes, people will instinctively look for doorframes, foundations, and open spaces. When the earth is shaking, what matters most is not what looks strong, but what actually is. There are buildings that appear solid and can collapse if their foundations are weak.

The bible  tells us this is not new. God warns that there will be seasons when everything that can be shaken and will be shaken so that what cannot be shaken may remain. Spiritually, we are in an earthquake moment. Systems we have trusted, financial, political, cultural, even religious, are trembling and seem to be breaking down.

We are anxious because we tend to build our security on shiny things never designed to hold up when tested. Spiritually, we are in an earthquake moment. People are anxious because they built their security on things never designed to hold it. Scripture tells us this is not unexpected. God warned that shaking would come but not to destroy His people, but to reveal what can truly stand.

GOD USES SHAKING TO REVEAL FOUNDATIONS (Hebrews 12:26–27)

The writer of Hebrews highlights that there will come a moment when God will “shake not only the earth but also the heavens” (Hebrews 12:26). This language is not a poetic exaggeration it’s a theological reality. Throughout the Bible, shaking always accompanies divine intervention. At Sinai, the mountain trembled when God descended in power. At the resurrection, the earth shook as the stone was rolled away. Shaking signals that God is at work, removing what is temporary so that what is eternal may be revealed.

Hebrews 12:27 clarifies the purpose of the shaking: “so that what cannot be shaken may remain.” God is not trying to destroy His people; He is refining their foundation. The shaking exposes what we have trusted that was never meant to bear the weight of our hope—wealth, systems, leaders, cultural stability, even religious routine. When these things tremble, it reveals whether our faith rests in them or in God Himself.

Refuge

GOD REMAINS A REFUGE IN THE MIDST OF CHAOS (Psalm 46)

Gods truth is powerfully answered in Psalm 46. The writer of this psalm begins not with the denial of chaos but with a declaration of confidence: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). You can see that God is not described as a distant observer, but as being very present.

Even when the earth gives way and mountains fall into the sea, God remains our refuge, not because circumstances are calm, but because He is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8)

Psalm 46 does not promise a world without troubles; it promises we have a God who is unmovable within it. “The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; He utters His voice, the earth melts” (Psalm 46:6). The powers on earth will rise and fall, but when God speaks, all of creation responds. What feel so extremely overwhelming to us is still under His authority.

THE UNSHAKABLE KINGDOM WE ARE RECEIVING (Hebrews 12:28)

We can see in Hebrews 12:28 where it turns doctrine into devotion: “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful.” As Christians our hope should not be rooted in the stability of the world, but in the permanence of God’s Kingdom. His Kingdom is not threatened by chaos, political turmoil, economic uncertainty, or cultural decline. Our hope has been established by Christ and secured through the blood and His resurrection, and will endure forever.

When we belong to this unshakable Kingdom that allows us to live with confidence even when circumstances collapse. Our gratitude becomes an act of faith, our worship becomes an anchor and our obedience becomes a declaration that our trust is not in what we see, but in the God who reigns above it all.

When everything seems to shake, God should never be our last resort, but should be and needs to be our sure foundation. It will never be a question of whether the world will shake; the Bible assures us that it will. The question is whether or not our lives are built on what can be shaken, or on the Kingdom that never will be.

HOW SHOULD WE RESPOND?

When the world shakes:

  • God is not panicking
  • God is not absent
  • God is not defeated

An anchor does not stop the storm, it keeps the ship from drifting. Faith doesn’t remove shaking, it keeps us steady. This is not a season to despair, it is a season to anchor deeper.

What’s being shaken may be:

  • False securities
  • Misplaced hope
  • Cultural idols
  • Shallow faith

But the Kingdom of God stands unshaken.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You that Your mercies are new every morning and that great is Your faithfulness (Lamentations 3:22–23). You go before us and You are with me; You will never leave me nor forsake me (Deuteronomy 31:8).

Nothing that is ahead is hidden from You. Lord, I commit this year to You, I am trusting You with all my heart and leaning not on my own understanding (Proverbs 3:5–6). I acknowledge that all of my plans are subject to Your will, and I say with humility, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that” (James 4:15). Order my steps according to Your Word (Psalm 119:133).

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me (Psalm 51:10). Transform me by the renewing of my mind, so that I may discern what is good, pleasing, and perfect in Your will (Romans 12:2). Let Your Word be a lamp to my feet and a light to my path in every decision I face (Psalm 119:105).

We ask for Your peace to guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7). Heal the brokenhearted and bind up my wounds (Psalm 147:3). Teach me to forgive as I have been forgiven (Colossians 3:13), and to walk in love, just as Christ loved (Ephesians 5:2).

Prepare me for every season this year brings. When trials come, help me to count it joy, knowing You are producing endurance in me (James 1:2–4). When blessings come, keep me humble and thankful, remembering that every good and perfect gift comes from You (James 1:17).

I will seek first Your kingdom and Your righteousness, trusting that what I need will be provided (Matthew 6:33). I dedicate this year to You, asking that my life will bring You glory in all that I do (1 Corinthians 10:31).

I pray this with confidence in the name of Jesus, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). In Jesus Name Amen.

III. Renewing Our Minds and Hearts for the New Year

A new year is not just about new goals, but a renewed inner life.

Scripture:

Just because it is a new year it does not mean that it automatically brings transformation; true renewal begins in the heart and mind. Romans 12:2 teaches that true change will come when our thinking is transformed by God’s truth. If we have not renewed our hearts and minds, we are destined to repeat the same cycles, habits, and struggles year after year no matter how good our intentions.

The prayer David spoke in Psalm 51 shows us where renewal begins: “Create in me a clean heart, O God.” Having a renewed heart leads us to renewed desires, renewed priorities, and renewed obedience. Through Christ, we become new creations, but daily renewal requires intentional daily surrender.

What we allow into our minds shapes our spiritual direction. God’s Word replaces lies with truth, fear with faith, and confusion with clarity. When we pray our hearts align with God’s will, not just our own wishes. When we commit to spiritual disciplines, Scripture, prayer, worship, we open ourselves to the transforming work of the Holy Spirit.

With a new year ahead, God is not merely calling us to do more, but to become more like Christ. When we renew our hearts and minds, our lives will naturally begin to reflect His will.

Thoughts to Ponder:

  • Transformation begins internally, not externally
  • God’s will becomes clear when our minds are renewed
  • Spiritual growth is intentional, not accidental

Application:

  • Commit to daily Scripture and prayer
  • Evaluate habits, influences, and thought patterns

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, as I enter into this new year, I thank You that Your mercies are new every morning and that great is Your faithfulness (Lamentations 3:22–23). You go before us and You are with me; You will never leave me nor forsake me (Deuteronomy 31:8).

“A Kingdom That Cannot Be Shaken“

fire

Scripture: Hebrews 12:25-29 See that you don’t refuse him who speaks. For if they didn’t escape when they refused him who warned on the earth, how much more will we not escape who turn away from him who warns from heaven, whose voice shook the earth then, but now he has promised, saying, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heavens.”

This phrase, “Yet once more” signifies the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that have been made, that those things which are not shaken may remain. Therefore, receiving a Kingdom that can’t be shaken, let’s have grace, through which we serve God acceptably, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.

Devotional Thought:
Everything we see, and around us in this world has an expiration date with only one exception the Kingdom of God. When earthly systems fail, governments, relationships, religions, and thoughts, God’s Kingdom will still be standing. We should not cling to fear because we belong to something eternal, something bigger, something that is everlasting.

Our gratitude grows when we remember what cannot be taken from us.

Reflection:
How does belonging to God’s Kingdom reshape your outlook?

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for giving me a Kingdom that cannot be shaken or destroyed. Teach me to live with gratitude.”

Stepping Into the New Year With God; Part 2

Letting go of a balloon

Lamentations 3:22–23 — “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”

II. Releasing the Weight of the Old Year

You’ll never be able to fully embrace what God is doing next while holding tightly to what He is asking you to release.

Scripture:

God did not intended for us to carry the weight of yesterday into tomorrow. We are told in Isaiah 43 not to dwell on former things because God is doing something new. However, even as believers we can enter the new year still bound by regret, bitterness, failure, or unresolved pain. Hebrews 12 calls these things “weights” that slow us down in our spiritual race.

There are things that we carry are things like sin that needs repentance, grief that needs healing, and others could be disappointments that must be surrendered to God. We need to try consider it the way the apostle Paul understood it when he said, “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead.” When it says “Forgetting” it does not mean pretending the past never happened; it means refusing to let it define who we are or letting it control us.

God cannot fill hands that are already full. To receive new joy, new vision, and new strength, we must first release what no longer belongs to us. Forgiveness, of others and of ourselves, is often the doorway to freedom. As we step into the new year, we lay down the burdens of the old and trust God with what we cannot change.

Thoughts to Ponder:

  • Some things from last year were seasons, not assignments
  • God often requires surrender before advancement
  • Forgiveness frees us to move forward

Application:

  • Release regret, bitterness, failure, and fear
  • Invite God to heal unresolved wounds

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, as I enter into this new year, I thank You that Your mercies are new every morning and that great is Your faithfulness (Lamentations 3:22–23). You go before us and You are with me; You will never leave me nor forsake me (Deuteronomy 31:8).

“Where Is Your Foundation?“

Hurricane

Scripture: Matthew 7:24–27 “Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it didn’t fall, for it was founded on the rock.

Everyone who hears these words of mine and doesn’t do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell—and its fall was great.”

Devotional
Jesus reminds us that there are going to be storms that come to every house. He expresses the importance that there is not the absence of storms, but safety when we have the presence of a solid foundation. If there is to much shaking, there will be some, but it can reveal what we have built our lives on.

Now is the time to reinforce our foundation. We should not wait until after the storm passes.

Reflection:
What has your faith been resting on lately?

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, help me build my life on Your truth and not on these temporary flashy things. Thank you Lord for being the light to path and being a guide when I need it. In Jesus Name Amen

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.Jeremiah 29:11 “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22–23 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Corinthians 5:17

“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:18-19 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Stepping Into the New Year With God

new year celebration

Lamentations 3:22–23 — “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”

I. Remembering God’s Faithfulness in the Past Year

Before we rush into a new year, God calls us to pause and remember what He has done.

Scripture:

As we are getting ready to enter a new year, if we consider what Scripture says we are invited to look back before we move forward. Psalm 103 reminds us, “Forget not all His benefits.” Remembering is not nostalgia it is however an act of faith. We read that when Israel forgot what God had done, they lost perspective and drifted into fear and disobedience. There is no difference for us, forgetting God’s faithfulness causes us to underestimate His power for what lies ahead.

Over the past year there may have been joy, loss, growth, or disappointment. Yet if we look into every season, we can see God was present. He sustained you when you were tired, guided you when you were unsure, and protected you in ways you may never fully realize. We can see that even our unanswered prayers and closed doors can later be seen as evidence of God’s loving guidance.

When we remember God’s faithfulness we fuel gratitude and build confidence. By doing this we are reminded that the same God who carried us through everything we have been through will walk with us into the next. Before we rush ahead with resolutions and plans, we should pause to say, “Lord, Thank You.” Gratitude anchors our hearts and prepares us to trust God again.

Thoughts to Ponder:

  • God has been faithful even in difficult seasons
  • Gratitude builds faith for what’s ahead
  • Forgetting God’s works leads to fear and pride

Application:

  • Reflect on victories, lessons, and deliverances
  • Thank God not only for what went right, but for what grew you

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, as I enter into this new year, I thank You that Your mercies are new every morning and that great is Your faithfulness (Lamentations 3:22–23). You go before us and You are with me; You will never leave me nor forsake me (Deuteronomy 31:8).
