Written by A former Alaskan town mayor who was once named a “parent of the year” has been charged with dozens of child sex crimes. Longtime Chevak Mayor Ulric Jeffery Ulroan, 48, was arrested Wednesday, accused of assaulting several teenage girls between 2009 and 2025, according to Alaska State Troopers — who warned that “there could be additional victims.” Ulroan, who was also a high school girls’ basketball coach, has been under investigation since January when cops received a tip-off he allegedly abused a 17-year-old girl in Chevak between 2009 and 2010 — two years after becoming the town’s mayor.
“During the course of the investigation, additional women came forward and reported that Ulroan sexually assaulted and/or abused them,” troopers said. Ulroan faces 47 counts – including first-degree sexual assault of a minor, indecent exposure and furnishing alcohol to someone under 21. At least six accusers have been named in the indictment. Troopers “believe that there could be additional victims” and Brian Wassman, the lead investigator, said “other crimes occurred from 2015 to 2017 in various communities.” Crimes were allegedly carried out by Ulroan while working as a foster parent, which he did between 2005 and 2023. He and his wife Mary were named parents of the year by the Alaska Federation of Natives in October 2019, KYUK reported.
His wife called the allegations an “extremely painful time” for her family. “My first priority is the safety and well-being of all people affected and the privacy of my own children as they navigate this difficult situation,” Mary said. “I respectfully ask for compassion and privacy for our family, especially my children,” she pleaded. Ulroan is due to appear in court Tuesday for his arraignment. Alaska lawmakers passed a bill that raises the state’s age of consent from 16 to 18 last month.
