Lindsay Clancy Trial: The Next Tidepod Challenge

Could this trial be the next tidepod challenge that comes from what has turned into social media psychosis. We are now seeing another case of a mother doing the same thing to her child. From the reports she became fixated on the trial. We as a society need to pay attention to these signs. In a study from American Psychological Association we can see that group psychosis and the cult mindset is real:

The term charismatic group, as discussed here, applies to a variety of social phenomena characterized by intense cohesiveness with an ideological commitment associated with a view of transcendence. Cults, on the other hand, can be considered a subgroup of this latter phenomenon, defined by the common culture as alien and deviant on the basis of values within that culture. The number of such groups, both of the former and latter type, vary greatly from one geographic setting to the next, and from one era to another, but they are more likely to arise during periods of relative anomie, or ones during which the established values of the society come into question.

Such groups may either be large or small in the number of their members as well. Additionally, many such groups operate without attracting notice of the general society. For these reasons, it is not possible to ascertain the number of these groups in a particular national setting, such as contemporary in the United States, or the number of members overall. It is not uncommon to think of cultlike new religious movements as anomalies. A cult is often portrayed as a sort of oddity, with little attention to the psychology and social structure that most such groups have in common. The beliefs and behaviors of their members become more understandable, however, when the patterns underlying these organizations are viewed within the context of their psychology.

Drawing on my professional research and experience, this chapter provides a psychological and social analysis of cults within the context of charismatic groups.

We have been warned about these things for years and have seen many different instances of this style of psychosis, hale-bopp comet, Waco, Charles Manson to name a few recent examples. The current environment allows these things to happen more because of social media. We have to pay attention to those around us, our loved ones, friends, and even ourselves. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Mother murdered young child after becoming ‘very invested’ in Lindsay Clancy trial

A mother allegedly murdered her 2-year-old son just hours after discussing the Lindsay Clancy murder trial with her friends, which she had become “very invested” in. NBC Chicago reported that a neighbor called 911 on September 1 after discovering the 2-year-old victim hanging from a cord around his neck in the basement. The caller was reportedly performing CPR on the child as officers arrived, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after being taken to a hospital.

His cause of death was listed as “asphyxia due to ligature compression of the neck.” The caller said that there was also an infant in the house and two school-aged children arrived shortly after she did, but none of them were harmed. Authorities walked upstairs and found the victim’s mother, 40-year-old Corie Walsh, fully clothed in her bathtub suffering from self-inflicted knife wounds, police reported. She was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Walsh’s husband was reportedly out of state when the incident occurred. During questioning Walsh allegedly told police she “did this to her baby because he was the ‘devil’ and the ‘anti-Christ’.” She further confessed to murdering the child, per authorities.

Witnesses reportedly told police that Walsh had recently become “very invested” in Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial. Clancy was accused of murdering her three children and then attempting to kill herself, with her defense claiming that the mother was suffering from postpartum psychosis. Walsh was reportedly “actively discussing the case via group text message with her friends” just hours prior to the child’s death.

The trial has also renewed debate about postpartum mental illness. Videos of mothers holding their babies while crying have sparked a heated backlash on TikTok as the trial of US mother Lindsay Clancy continues in Massachusetts.

The videos show women rocking or holding infants and toddlers while using excerpts from Clancy’s personal writings as on-screen text. Some posts include phrases such as “same, Lindsay”, appearing to express sympathy with the struggles described in her journals. The posts have faced strong criticism online, with users accusing some creators of turning a tragedy into social media content. Critics have also questioned whether the videos could glamorise or trivialise the killing of children. Some users have called for the videos to be removed, while others have raised concerns about children being featured in content linked to a case involving the killing of three young children.

Allie Beth Stuckey Warns of ‘Toxic Empathy’ Blinding Lindsay Clancy Supporters

A new disturbing TikTok trend has mothers posting clips of themselves holding their crying babies with the caption “Me too, Lindsay” in support of Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts mother on trial for allegedly strangling her three children to death. Within this trend, videos of women rocking or holding babies and toddlers include excerpts from Clancy’s personal diary entries, which were read aloud in court. The diary entries detailed her severe postpartum mental health struggles before she killed her children—Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and Callan, 8 months.

Other social media users assert that because Clancy is “a Leo” in astrology, “she must not have done it,” per the rules of astrology. The movement has garnered nearly $2 million in donations in support of Clancy. A Wisconsin TikTok mom started a fundraiser that has raised more than $900,000 from nearly 30,000 donations. Clancy’s parents are also raising funds themselves and have received nearly $900,000 through their GoFundMe. People across social media have joined online to support Clancy, and about 300 women and a few men protested on Aug. 20 outside the courthouse where Clancy is being prosecuted. The group’s pink shirts had messages such as “Believe,”

“She Needed Help” and “Peace for Lindsay” inscribed on them. Allie Beth Stuckey, a Christian commentator, weighed in on the “pro-Lindsay” movement and the high-profile case, expressing that one’s state of mind does not excuse murdering children. “We can have grace for people’s struggles—postpartum and otherwise—without excusing or minimizing the methodical murder of children,” Stuckey posted on X. “Lindsay Clancy may have been suffering from psychosis—none of us really knows—but all people who commit heinous crimes are probably suffering from some level of insanity. I’m sorry that she may have been suffering and that she didn’t have the support she needed.

But once we start negating accountability for evil because of mental health diagnoses, we forgo justice altogether. I’m not willing to do that.” In January 2023, Clancy fatally strangled her children using an exercise band, then attempted to kill herself but survived. Now, she is facing the final stages of her prosecution for first degree murder. Clancy’s attorneys have claimed during the trial, which began in late July, that she was suffering from postpartum depression and psychosis, as well as undiagnosed bipolar disorder, and therefore should not be considered criminally responsible for killing her children.

The trial has sparked debates on postpartum mental health, treatment of women dealing with psychiatric episodes and moral responsibility. Stuckey believes that the viral public support for a mother on trial for murdering her children is a form of “toxic empathy” at play and is endangering others. “Toxic Empathy is when you allow your deep feelings for one person to blind you to both reality and morality. So focused are you on the plight of one group or individual that you forget about those on the other side of the moral equation,” she posted on Instagram. Stuckey used the example of abortion as just another form of toxic empathy.

“Toxic empathy feels so deeply for the pregnant woman in crisis that it ignores the rights and pain of the baby that’s murdered via abortion,” she said, adding, “It is so overwhelmed by Lindsay Clancy’s emotional pain that it completely obscures the physical torture of three innocent children. This kind of empathy—which plunges a person into irrationality—is not always suicidal, but it is always toxic. It makes fairness, objectivity, and justice very, very difficult.” If convicted of first degree murder, she will face life without parole, but if she is deemed not guilty by reason of insanity, Clancy will be admitted to a state psychiatric hospital.

Women rally in support of Lindsay Clancy at her trial

Hundreds of Lindsay Clancy supporters, many wearing pink clothing emblazoned with phrases such as “Believe,” “She Needed Help” and “Peace For Lindsay,” gathered Thursday outside the courthouse where she is on trial in the killings of her three children. Several of the 300 women, and a few men, said Clancy’s story resonated with them and that they wanted to raise awareness about how the mental health system treats women.

Clancy’s lawyer does not dispute that she killed the children, but says she should not be held criminally responsible because she was mentally ill. The livestreamed trial has sparked massive discussions online and has brought attention to postpartum psychosis, a rare mental illness Clancy’s attorney Kevin Reddington says she had that is linked to the stress, sleep deprivation and hormonal changes that follow childbirth. Reddington said she also has bipolar disorder. After strangling her children, Clancy jumped from a second-story window and remains paralyzed from the waist down. Reddington says Clancy repeatedly sought help: She turned to multiple outpatient providers, tried various drugs they prescribed, called a suicide hotline, went to an emergency room, and even checked herself into a psychiatric hospital.

Prosecutors say the former labor and delivery nurse planned the Jan. 24, 2023, killings and contrived to get her husband out of the house by sending him to pick up medicine for one of their children and dinner for the family. They have also questioned the seriousness of her suicide attempt, and witnesses have testified that Clancy wouldn’t always take prescribed medications.

Supporters stood silently for an hour

Thursday’s rally was the first time during the nearly monthlong trial that supporters have come out in such large numbers. “Women are being dismissed, neglected and ignored when we speak up,” said April Vincent, a 52-year-old paralegal from Providence, Rhode Island. “We’re scared because nobody takes us seriously.” The women stood silently for more than an hour ahead of Thursday’s proceedings, where a chaplain called by the defense testified about visiting Clancy in the hospital after the killings.

At the sight of Reddington outside the courthouse, the crowd broke into applause. Rally organizer Renee Kimball implored the crowd to trust that Reddington “has Lindsay’s fight.” Toward the end of their rally, supporters formed a circle, said the Lord’s Prayer, held up their arms and formed hearts with their hands. Some held flags from different countries to show that the support for Clancy was global. Clancy, 36, has pleaded not guilty to murder charges in the deaths of Callan, Dawson and Cora Clancy, who ranged from 8 months to 5 years old.

Researchers estimate that postpartum psychosis — which is more serious and less common than postpartum depression — afflicts 1 to 2 per 1,000 women after delivery. Jeanne Zaborski, a 72-year-old retired nurse from Rockland, Massachusetts, said she hopes the case raises awareness about postpartum health.
