Flood watch issued for parts of Massachusetts with torrential rain in the weather forecast Sunday

The WBZ-TV Weather Team is issuing a NEXT Weather Alert for a potentially tricky weather situation for Sunday, especially across Rhode Island and southeast Massachusetts, where a flood watch is now in effect. The main concern will be from roughly 7 a.m. through 5 p.m. Sunday, with the greatest potential for heavy rainfall between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. We’re expecting periods of showers, along with a few embedded thunderstorms.

Most locations should see rainfall totals in the 0.50–2 inch range, but the bigger concern is the potential for localized narrow bands of torrential rain. If one of these heavier bands develops and stalls over an area, 2 to 4 inches of rain could fall within just 3 hours. That’s enough to create localized flash flooding, particularly in vulnerable urban areas where drainage can quickly become overwhelmed. Even though the overall setup isn’t necessarily a widespread flooding event, a localized corridor of very heavy rain could cause problems quickly. If you’re heading out Sunday morning or early afternoon, remember to never drive through a flooded roadway; turn around and find another route.

For now, the focus is on the potential for localized flash flooding within an otherwise fairly wet Sunday, with the greatest concern during the late morning and early afternoon hours. After the line moves through, we’ll actually end the day with some sunshine and much calmer conditions.

Pittsburgh hit by “1 in 100 year” storm that brought widespread flooding after heavy rain

The intense storm that brought significant rainfall that flooded parts of Pittsburgh on Thursday night was a “1 in 100 year event,” authorities said.  In a news release on Friday, the city said the storm dropped more than 2.5 inches of rain in less than an hour in some parts of Pittsburgh, along with winds of up to 70 miles per hour. The National Weather Service reported that the Pittsburgh region saw between 2.6 and 4 inches of rain.

“The storm is being considered equivalent to a 1 in 100 year event and the heavy downfall led to flooding, downed trees, downed wires and other dangerous conditions,” the news release said.  EMS, according to the city, responded to more than 60 calls during the storm, and swiftwater rescue teams assisted dozens of drivers stranded in vehicles, including nearly 30 vehicles trapped in floodwaters along the Saw Mill Run Boulevard/Route 51 corridor.

There were no reported storm-related injuries. “Use caution, be safe and contact 911 to report emergencies, down wires, down trees and flooded areas,” the city said.  In other parts of Allegheny County, some people cleaning up in White Oak on Friday had no power but had plenty of mud piles, including the Rainbow Volunteer Fire Company.  The company had a few inches of water, but it wasn’t from Long Run Creek, which goes behind the department. It was from drains backing up across the street and pushing water under the doors. John Galaski’s store on State Route 48 lost power and had a few inches of water. 

“When I found out we didn’t have power and water came up to the building, I’m thinking, how far?” Galaski said about the water getting into his auto parts store. It ended up not being as bad as it could have been, as the water stopped about 20 feet into the store. “Last night at home, I know it was bad. But down here in the valley, you don’t know what to expect,” Galaski said.

Down the street, restoration crews came in to start water cleanup at the Rainbow Volunteer Fire Company. It has not seen water flood the station like this since Hurricane Ivan in 2004. “The flooding, wires down, trees down, it was a lot. I haven’t seen rain like that in a long time,” Chief Brandon Schmidt said. The White Oak Police Department said crews are working to get power restored and clear debris as fast as possible.

Beaver faces long recovery after worst flooding in years

Roughly 200 homes were impacted by flooding in Beaver after quick, heavy rain fell on the Cottonwood Fire burn scar over the weekend. Part of the Grove neighborhood remained evacuated south of the Beaver River Channel on Monday, after evacuations were ordered on Sunday. Others on the north side have been allowed to return to their homes.

Scattered afternoon storms could bring more flood risks to the Pittsburgh area. Any Alert Days Ahead? None for now. Today could become one, depending on afternoon storm coverage and intensity. Thursday and Friday have a chance to become First Alert Weather Days. The chance is high that Friday will become one. Aware: Significant parts of our area are included in NOAAs WPC Excessive Rain report (where flash flooding could occur) every day over the next five days.  Here we go again. A number of small factors will come together this afternoon to bring a significant flash flood risk to our area.

At this point, I have our coverage area of rain today looking very similar to yesterday, with scattered slow-moving storms around for most of the afternoon. There will be a number of places that don’t see any rain, but more people will see rain today than won’t see rain. The issue is that any storms that develop will be slow movers, dumping big rain totals on areas. KDKA Weather Center The ingredients for flash flooding (high moisture, warmth, weak boundaries that cause lift, and weak steering winds) will remain in place through Saturday. Any thunderstorm activity you see will have the potential to cause flooding. Today’s highest rain chance will come southeast of Pittsburgh.

This is an area where some communities saw more than 4 inches of rain, according to radar estimates. That’s an impressive amount of rain. In most cases, that is equal to what you’d expect to see all month long.  Clearly, it won’t take much to see flooding in these communities over the next couple of days. Unfortunately, we will continue to have a risk of storms with the potential of flash flooding through Saturday. Yes, I can’t rule out flash flooding over the next five days across parts of our area. Flash flooding is flooding that occurs within six hours after rain comes to an end. 

It is one of the more dangerous weather events, with flooding being the number one killer of Americans each and every year. KDKA Weather Center When it comes to your temperature forecast, I have highs today hitting the mid to low 80s.  I have Pittsburgh’s high temperature hitting 83 degrees, with noon temperatures right at 80. Skies will be mostly cloudy to overcast. Highs remain in the mid to low 80s over the next couple of days, with morning lows barely dipping below 70 degrees. Humidity levels will briefly dip late Saturday into Sunday.
