Black bear attacks man, dog in northern Minnesota

A man and a his dog were attacked by a black bear outside their northern Minnesota home on Monday. The Minnesota DNR tells Bring Me The News that the incident happened in the early hours of Monday at a home in Solway Township when a man let his dogs out of the house. A short time later, a bear had attacked and pinned one of the dogs to the ground, with the man running up to the bear and kicking it to get it off the dog.

The bear then “bit the man,” the DNR said, but neither man nor dog were seriously injured, with both suffering puncture wounds, with the bear fleeing into a nearby tree. The bear had left the property by the time a DNR conservation officer arrived at the home. The man declined medical care at the scene, and plans to bring the dog to a veterinarian for a check. “This appears to have been a defensive on the bear’s part,” the DNR said. “It may have been attracted to bird feeders on the property and startled when the dogs were let outside.”

The DNR said homeowners living around bears should remove potential food sources including bird feeders. It also suggests flipping an exterior light on and “making a little noise” before letting dogs out in the yard at night so a bear isn’t surprised by mistake.
