In a rare kind of attack, a bear killed a man in Crystal, New Mexico, on Thursday, local police said. The police department for the Navajo Nation said officers within its Window Rock district received a call at about 1pm that a bear had attacked a man. Authorities shot the bear, and the creature fled into woods near the scene of the attack. They said they ultimately found the bear and “neutralized” the animal. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family at this time,” the Navajo police department said in a Facebook post.
The Native American reservation’s police department said its criminal investigations department as well as its fish and wildlife department also responded to the scene of the fatal attack. They neither identified the victim nor said what type of bear had killed him. The police department said it “urges the public to stay away from potentially dangerous wildlife. If a bear is spotted, please call your nearest [police] District.” Thursday’s fatal bear attack appeared to be the first such case in New Mexico since 2001, according to a comprehensive list with information about bear attacks.
That 2001 case, meanwhile, was the first fatal New Mexico bear attack in a century, the Associated Press reported. The victim in that case was Adelia Trujillo, who was killed by a 250lb male bear that broke into her house. In 2020, a bear attacked a woman in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The 37-year-old woman and her husband were sitting on the deck at a ski lodge when it approached them. The bear came within a foot of the couple and started chasing her and then attacked in the parking lot. Her injuries included “several broken bones, a collapsed lung, bite marks and scratches”, New Mexico wildlife authorities said at the time.
The woman in that case survived, according to KRQE, and authorities reportedly killed the bear. North America generally has only a handful of fatal bear attacks annually. According to the North American Bear Center, a person’s chances of being murdered by a fellow human is 60,000 times greater than dying at the hands of a black bear. National park service statistics indicate that the chances of being injured by a bear is exceedingly rare at one in 2.1m.

A drought in the western U.S. has devastated wildlands, dried up food sources and sent bears wandering along city sidewalks and into homes and shops in search of food. What should you do if you meet a bear? Reuters turned to BearWise, opens new tab, which bear biologists started in the southeastern United States in 2018 and that grew into a national program of the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies.
SHOULD PEOPLE FEAR BEARS?
Over millennia, humans have mythologized, vilified and attributed personalities to bears. Smart, strong and fast, bears can weigh hundreds of pounds and are feared predators in the wild. But they typically avoid people and rarely attack them, scientists say.
HOW CAN YOU TELL IF A BEAR FEELS THREATENED?
A bear that is huffing, moaning or clacking its jaws is showing it is feeling threatened and prepared to defend itself. BearWise advises standing your ground in the face of a defensive bear, even if it moves toward you. If it makes contact, play dead, protecting your head, until it goes away.
WHAT IF THE BEAR IS AGGRESSIVE?
While a defensive bear is noisy and obviously stressed, an aggressive or predatory bear is quiet and moves deliberately. In this situation, experts advise shouting, throwing rocks and using bear spray. If a predatory bear makes physical contact, fight back.
DOES IT MATTER WHETHER IT’S A BLACK OR GRIZZLY BEAR?
No, according to Nate Bowersock, a black bear biologist with the Missouri Department of Conservation and chair of the BearWise working group of the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies. The key is to respond to the bear’s behavior, not its species.
Bears can be hard to tell apart, especially if you are under pressure. Grizzlies, also known as brown bears, are distinguished in appearance by a shoulder hump. Individual black or grizzly bears vary from black to light brown and range in size.
WHERE ARE NORTH AMERICA’S BEARS?
Black bears are numerous and found across the U.S. and in Canada and Mexico. Most grizzlies, whose population has rebounded because of conservation efforts, live in Alaska and northern Canada, but also in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and Washington state.
HOW CAN YOU AVOID TROUBLE?
If you spot a bear, do not approach. Do not gather to gawk if a bear shows up in your neighborhood.
If you find a bear in your home or business, leave and call in expert help, Bowersock said.
“Back away quietly,” he said.
Do not feed bears, and that includes not leaving pet food outside, keeping trash bins off the street until pickup morning and keeping barbecue grills clean.
IT’S A DROUGHT. SHOULDN’T I FEED THE BEARS?
Bowersock said people would be mistaken to think they are helping by feeding bears, and that it is even more important not to do so during a drought.
“If a bear finds food near people and starts to associate human areas with food, they will likely spend even more time in the future near people, even during non-drought times.”

A mother bear and her three cubs were rescued after becoming trapped inside a large water storage tank in La Verne Saturday, prompting a large response from firefighters and wildlife officials. Officials said the bears were in distress for hours before one of the cubs managed to escape on its own. First responders dubbed the effort “Operation Care Bear” after the bears spent more than 12 hours inside the tank. The rescue happened near Claremont Wilderness Park’s 5-Mile Loop Trail. Firefighters shared video of the rescue, which ended with three bears emerging from the tank. The bears had apparently squeezed through a 1-foot-wide opening in the concrete structure and became trapped inside.
Crews used a saw to cut a larger hole in the tank and lowered a ladder to help the animals escape. “They were exhausted, so it took a few minutes for the first cub to come out, then the second cub got out, and then finally the mother,” said Keith Navarre with the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The bears were spotted around 8 a.m. Saturday by Glendora residents Eric McDonald and Jamie Kirk. “We climbed up top, and there’s a small hole and right away we see a bear staring at us, kind of holding on to the walls because it was full of water,” Kirk said. McDonald said he and Kirk were concerned about the animals’ condition. “We were just concerned that, certainly they had water, but they would get hungry and there’s no telling how long they’d been in there,” he said. Tyler Christensen and Bradney Boli also encountered the bears and recorded video of the bears inside the tank. “I just stuck my head in the hole. One was all tucked up on the top.
There’s like a little pole. They were just scared to death,” Christensen said. “I think the bears got very lucky because it would not be easy to hear that,” Boli said. California Department of Fish and Wildlife drained water from the tank before firefighters from La Verne and Los Angeles County assisted in the rescue. The bears may have been seeking water during the hot and humid weather. One of the three cubs escaped the tank before rescuers arrived. That cub has since been reunited with its family.

A baby bear took a nibble at a photographer after becoming curious about his boot. Wildlife photographer Bruce Robert Danz was in the Katmai Preserve in Alaska on August 2 with another shooter while capturing images of three cubs and a mama bear fishing. But as is sometimes the case with wildlife photography, the bears wandered close to the humans; a little too close. As the cubs emerged from the muddy river, the trio of inquisitive cubs walked past the two photographers. Danz’s companion can be heard saying, “No bear, no bear” as the bears get too close for comfort.
Then one of the cubs couldn’t resist the urge to investigate and started sniffing at Danz’s shoe. The sniff turns into a nibble and Danz quickly pulled his foot away ever so slightly. “No bear, that’s my foot,” Danz says. “Just moving my boot a little was enough to end the interaction and the cub fell back in line,” Danz tells Storyful. Danz was on a photographic tour with Jerry Jacques, who has been leading grizzly bear photo safaris since 1977. “We kept our distance, kept quiet and did not disturb the bears from fishing,” Danz says. “The bears were aware of our presence and occasionally would walk very close to us.” “Jerry said we handled the situation perfectly by not causing alarm,” Danz adds. “Jerry suggested perhaps the cub was tired of salmon and wanted to try some filet of sole. I was not afraid, just intent on keeping quiet and not causing alarm.”
It’s the second time this summer that a photographer has had a close encounter with a grizzly bear in Katmai: photographer Matt Addington got within inches of a grazing grizzly bear, capturing some incredible close-up images. Despite people joking that the bear was eating a salad while preparing for steak, Addington described it as “one of the more peaceful, serene, surreal moments that I’ve ever had.” Similar to what happened to Danz, the bears were initially hundreds of yards away but naturally drifted over to where they were sitting, untroubled by human presence. Katmai is home to 2,000 brown bears and at this time of year, they eat up to 120 lbs of grass a day to prepare for winter hibernation.

Thanks to the drought, bears are showing up places they never have before. It’s a message wildlife experts have been saying for months, and while some Colorado residents might be tired of hearing it, the people in Denver’s Platt Park neighborhood got a reminder Sunday morning that no matter how tired you might be of the message, bears will come anyway and you need to keep an eye out. “How did it get here? We’re in Platte Park. We’re not in Evergreen or Golden,” remarked Faye Sands, who owns a home directly across from the tree the bear eventually climbed into.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife says the bear is a 1-year-old male. They also say they can’t have a bear in such a populated area. Especially since there was a farmers’ market right around the corner. So they had to tranquilize him and take him back to the mountains. Neighbors say the first noticed the bear in the tree around 8 a.m. “My neighbor called me. I was in bed. She said there’s a bear in the cottonwood tree,” said Sands. “I didn’t believe it and looked out and there he was, just a big bear,” said Allison Schmidt who is neighbors with Faye Sands. Eventually a crowd of curiosity grew. “We went for a run, and then we stopped by Duffeyrolls. Got some food and we headed back home and saw a crowd,” said another neighbor. I really like animals, so I liked to watch them,” said young London Goellick. Neighbors in Platt Park say it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience. “I’ve lived here for over 15 years, and I’ve never seen.
I’ve seen, like, maybe a raccoon, ” said Sands. “I don’t think we’ll ever see up there in a tree, two streets down from where we live again,” said one neighbor. Even though they enjoyed the up close and personal experience with one of Colorado’s most intriguing creatures, they are glad it’s all over and thankful for the CPW agents who removed the bear. “They were so careful and caring and helpful, talking to help mitigate the crowd. They thought about everything that they could and they did a really incredible job,” said Schmidt.
Therefore know that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments. Deuteronomy 7:9

Colorado Parks and Wildlife says two people were recently injured in separate bear attacks in the high country. On Tuesday, a bear reportedly entered a home in Steamboat Springs near Fish Creek Falls Road. The woman told wildlife officers the bear entered her home through the sliding glass door around 1 a.m., and she attempted to chase it back outside. The bear then struck her in the face. CPW says the woman drove herself to the hospital for treatment and is now recovering at home. Investigators say the bear forced its way through the door and knocked it off its track to get inside the home.
Wildlife officers have alerted the neighbors to take precautions and have set up a bear trap in the area. Another attack happened around 3 a.m. Wednesday in the Aspen area. CPW says a man experiencing homelessness was sleeping in Rio Grande Park when a bear approached and bit him on the head. The man woke up, managed to escape from his sleeping bag, and then escaped from the bear. He called for help and was taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries to his head and face. CPW says the man has since been released from the hospital. Wildlife officers found a female bear in the area matching the description and euthanized her, as per CPW policy.
They say that a full necropsy will be performed on the bear. These most recent encounters follow an attack earlier this week in the Eagle-Vail area. CPW is warning that there have been a record number of bear reports this year due to the ongoing drought. The bears are entering hyperphagia and are searching for food to prepare for winter, but the drought has reduced the availability of their usual food sources.
This is pushing them further into residential areas in search of food sources such as unsecured trash, birdseed, pet food and barbecue grills. Wildlife officials are urging the public to safely secure all possible food sources and keep grills clean. They asked residents to take precautions and to secure all doors and windows, including those on garages, to prevent bears from entering homes. If a bear does enter a home, CPW says the resident should leave immediately and call 911. Anyone experiencing bear issues should contact CPW as soon as possible.

Firefighters in Crested Butte said that a house fire was started by a bear after the animal got inside the private residence. The Crested Butte Fire Protection District posted on its Facebook page that crews responded to a residential structure fire overnight on Aug. 19 in the Mt. Crested Butte neighborhood. According to fire officials, the bear forced its way through an exterior door and then broke through a large pane of glass to get inside the home. Once inside, the bear knocked over shelves, furniture and window coverings in the entryway and living room before moving into the kitchen.
CBS After the bear moved into the kitchen, the bear tore apart the refrigerator, scattered the contents of the trash can, destroyed stuff that was on the counter, and broke apart a dish-drying rack. The wooden rack landed on the electric stovetop, which was turned on at some point after the bear got into the kitchen. Investigators said the rack caught fire and filled the home with smoke. Two people were inside the home when the bear broke in and they called 911. They said the bear scratched at their bedroom door and its behavior became increasingly erratic and aggressive as the smoke detector sounded an alarm. When Crested Butte Marshals and Mt. Crested Butte Police Department officers arrived, they saw the bear on its hind legs trying to break through the living room’s front window, with smoke and flames visible in the kitchen behind the bear. Officers said that because of the bear’s aggressive behavior, the active fire, and limited access to the home, officers euthanized the bear and then extinguished the kitchen fire.
Crested Butte Fire Protection District crews were dispatched at 1:16 a.m. and on the way were told that the bear had been euthanized and the fire was believed to be out. The people inside the home were not injured. Investigators said there was no trash, food or other attractants stored outside or in vehicles at the property but did confirm the residence had previously experienced a bear entering the home on at least one other occasion. Colorado Parks and Wildlife responded to the scene to remove the bear.

A bear swiped at a man and scratched his arm on Monday. That’s according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials, who said it happened in the afternoon at an apartment complex in Eagle County. CPW said the man was leaving a laundry room when the bear appeared and scratched him. He then tried to get away and tripped and hurt his foot. The man was treated at a medical center for both injuries and has since been released.
Wildlife officers made an attempt to locate the bear, a female, but so far haven’t been able to find it. They said they set a bear trap in the neighborhood, which is close to Eagle-Vail. “Wildlife officials believe the presence of a larger male bear in the area prompted the sow and cubs to stay away,” CPW wrote in a prepared statement. It has been an above-normal year for bear sightings and conflicts in Colorado.

The Colorado Cherry Company, a Colorado staple, offers pies so legendary that even bears want a taste. This week a young bear broke into the Colorado Cherry Company’s location on Highway 36 north of Lyons to chow down on a blueberry pie. Colorado Cherry Company Surprisingly, it’s not the first time this has happened. Back in 2015, a bear was able to get in and eat 28 pies, according to employees. The bear enjoyed many flavors but apparently did not touch strawberry rhubarb. The Cherry Company is owned by the family of CBS Colorado’s First Alert Meteorologist Alex Lehnert.
With Alex’s brother now running the shop, a new generation of bears seems to have taken an interest. Wednesday, employees at the Colorado Cherry Company near Lyons arrived to discover someone with a taste for blueberry pie had made an overnight visit to the shop. “An eaten pie on the ground with the paw prints, little blueberry paw prints on the glass,” said Bailey Sandahl, general manager of the Colorado Cherry Company location. The clues left behind pointed to one suspect. “We do have like some prints here from his nose,” said Sielh Avila, a Colorado Cherry Company employee, while indicating the window the bear entered through. Just after the shop closed, employees think the smell of fresh-baked pie wafting from some windows lured the bear in.
“Behind this window is where we have our ovens, and with them on, it gets pretty hot. So we like to open this during the day,” Avila said. “I guess the closers, they didn’t close it all the way.” It was a simple mistake, and one that made it easy as pie for the bear to break in. “I guess it was open just enough that the bear could smell it. And we do have a screen which used to be right here in front of the windows. And I guess he tore right through that. He opened the window and he climbed right in,” Avila said. “He went straight for the pies by the register, and he pulled a couple off the shelf, put them on the floor, helped himself to those.” The bear ate his fill, perused the store’s other offerings, then left, politely not breaking anything. “That’s him again on the other side, looking at the brochures, deciding where he’s going to go next,” Sandahl said, chuckling, while looking at security camera video showing the bear’s activities in the shop.
“Nothing was broken … except the pie.” “It says outside that Yogi Bear eats here, and it lives up to the hype,” a customer said Friday. “This seems like paradise for a bear.” Customers can’t blame the bear. “I think the bear made a good choice, picking the cherry pie because it is the best pie here,” another customer said. But the Cherry Company says he won’t be receiving an invite back anytime soon. “As cute as it was, we don’t want it happening again,” Sandahl said. “A fed bear is a dead bear so we’re doing everything we can to help fix that, so making sure triple checking all the doors are locked up at night, making sure the trash is sealed up and beared off.” It’s been a record-high year for bear sightings and conflicts in Colorado.
Officials have warned this year’s drought is pushing hungry bears closer to the Front Range, and to humans, in search of food. The Cherry Company admits there’s more bear-proofing that can be done on the old building. They’re looking at reinforcing the doors and windows, and replacing doorknobs, because once a bear finds a food source, they will go back in. “I’m going to keep coming back where I’m fed. So obviously, you don’t want to encourage that. You want to keep the bear population away from the rest of us, for their sake and our sake,” Sandahl said. “It’s a give-and-take. We lost a pie or two, but I think we’ll live at the end of the day.”

A mother bear and her two cubs were spotted Tuesday in Auburn, marking the latest after a string of recent bear sightings across western Placer County. The Auburn Police Department said the bears were seen near Lincoln Way and Russell Road. “A friendly reminder to our neighbors: We live in bear country! Please keep an eye on your surroundings, secure garbage and food sources, and bring pets and other animals inside if a bear is in the area,” Auburn police wrote on social media, noting that bear sightings are not uncommon for the area. The sighting follows recent bear reports in nearby cities in western Placer County including Lincoln, Rocklin and Roseville. In Lincoln, police said a bear was reported several times Friday in the Sun City Lincoln Hills community, with sightings reported between Wagon Wheel Lane and Overland Lane.
Its last reported location was near Oak Tree Lane and Highway 193. Rocklin police also issued an alert last week after a bear was reported near Argonaut Avenue, Sweetwater Drive and Aiken Dairy Road. The following day, several reports came in from Roseville residents who spotted a bear near Foothills Boulevard between Blue Oaks and Pleasant Grove boulevards. It remains unclear whether the reports in Auburn, Lincoln, Rocklin and Roseville involve any of the same animals. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has been notified of the recent sightings and has been monitoring bear activity in the region. Wildlife officials have noted that this time of year can bring increased bear activity as mother bears push their cubs out on their own, sometimes sending younger bears into areas they would not normally go. Bears that wander into residential areas will often eventually leave on their own, officials said.

A bear was spotted in Roseville on Wednesday morning, one day after police in neighboring Rocklin issued an alert about a similar sighting. Roseville Fire said the bear was seen near Foothills Boulevard between Blue Oaks Boulevard and Pleasant Grove Boulevard. Roseville police said they received three reports of a bear sighting, all between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. It remains unclear whether the animal is the same bear reported Tuesday near homes in Rocklin’s Skyline area. Rocklin police notified the California Department of Fish and Wildlife about that sighting. Residents are being urged to keep their distance and call authorities if the bear behaves aggressively or poses an immediate threat.
Roseville police noted that no road closures are in effect at this time. Officials say that this is the time of year when mother bears push out their cubs to be on their own, and that sometimes leads them into unusual places, which can be more of a danger to them instead of the public. “When they spend time in these urban areas, there’s a potential to get hit by cars, the potential to get into an unnatural food source,” said Peter Tira, with Fish and Wildlife. Fish and Wildlife told CBS News Sacramento that there’s no current effort to find and capture the bear, noting that it will likely make its way out of town on its own. Bear sightings are uncommon in Roseville but not unheard of. In 2013, a young black bear was spotted in several east Roseville yards, including outside a home on Spring Valley Drive. Last fall, a family of three bears was also captured on video near Rocklin as the animals followed the Dry Creek watershed through parts of Placer and Sacramento counties.

A young male bear that was spotted up a tree in a mid-Michigan city has been safely relocated to Houghton Lake, local authorities said. The bear was spotted on Tuesday morning near Francher Avenue and Mosher Street, west of M-127, and was in a tree by the time local authorities arrived on scene. The Mt. Pleasant Police Department and Michigan Department of Natural Resources teamed up on the logistics for the animal rescue.
The DNR said a thick pole vault mat borrowed from Mt Pleasant High School provided a safe space for the bear to land. “The tranquilized bear landed safely and completely unharmed after an 18-foot drop! DNR biologists gave him a quick medical checkup (he’s in great health!), tagged him, and safely relocated him about 60 miles north to a beautiful swamp in the Houghton Lake area,” the DNR said.

A bear attack left four people injured in two factories and a residential area in northern Japan’s Fukushima on Tuesday, police and media reports said. A record 13 people were killed by bears in Japan last year, and there has been a jump in sightings as the animals emerge hungry from hibernation. “A bear-related human injury incident… occurred in Fukushima City, injuring four people,” the prefectural police said in a statement. The bear was first spotted in a car parts factory, prompting an emergency call explaining that “employees had been bitten,” the Yomiuri Shimbun daily reported, citing police and fire department officials. The outlet reported the bear still had not been located.
As the bear continued its rampage, two other people were injured, one in a residential area and the other on the premises of an electronic equipment manufacturer nearby, the Yomiuri said, adding that the animal was thought to have remained inside the factory. The report said one of those attacked was heavily injured, while the rest suffered only mild injuries. In the last fiscal year to March, bear sightings nationwide topped 50,000, more than double the previous record set two years earlier, according to official data. The animals have been seen on airport runways, walking on golf courses, roaming near schools and causing panic in supermarkets and hot spring resorts almost on a daily basis. A bear that rampaged through a supermarket for two days was lured out with food coated in honey, and police said the animal was trapped and later killed.
The problem was so bad that last year the U.S. State Department warned Americans in Japan to be alert for bears. Record sightings have been reported again this year as the bears emerge from their winter slumber, according to local media. In April, bear attacks killed one person and injured five others, according to the environment ministry. There have also been more than a dozen bear sightings reported on the outskirts of Tokyo this year, with a Russian man in his 30s reportedly mauled as he hiked in the city last month. A Japanese company making ferocious-looking robot wolves is being swamped by orders after record numbers of fatal bear attacks on humans last year.
“Monster Wolf” is an animatronic scarecrow with flashing red eyes that howls and growls menacingly to scare away wild animals. Scientists say the surge in attacks has been driven by fast-growing numbers of bears, combined with a falling human population, especially in rural areas.

Neighborhoods around Doherty High School in Worcester, Massachusetts were on alert after a black bear was seen roaming around on Thursday morning.
You could say the suspect in the chase really put his climbing skills on full display. A black bear was caught on camera scaling a retaining wall near Doherty High School, as Environmental Police followed close behind.
Parents picking up their kids from school spotted the bear meandering nearby. The busy bear trekked through town trying to find its way and half a mile away, it came face to face with Gail Barrell in her backyard.
“My heart was racing,” said Barrell. “I was terrified, so he looked at me and kept going on, but I ran up to the house screaming.”
“We’ve been here 22 years and never saw a bear,” said Phil Barrell.
Moments earlier, the bear galloped across the backyard of a rest home before it climbed a tree then hopped a fence.

The body of a hiker who was reported missing has been found by search and rescue crews in Glacier National Park in Montana, park officials said Thursday. His remains were spotted Wednesday about two-and-a-half miles up the Mt. Brown Trail, some 50 feet off the trail “in a densely wooded area with downed timber,” the officials said. “His injuries are consistent with those sustained by a bear encounter,” they said, adding that “wildlife and law enforcement personnel are currently assessing the area for bear activity and any ongoing public safety concerns. The investigation is ongoing.”
That part of the trail has been closed until the investigation is finished. The National Park Service isn’t releasing the victim’s name until three days after his next-of-kin are notified. The service said Tuesday that a search was being conducted for a Fort Lauderdale, Florida man who was hiking and hadn’t been heard from since Sunday night. On Monday, two hikers were injured in a bear attack at Yellowstone National Park, the first such incident at the park this year. Craig Lerman, a tourist from Maryland, told Cowboy State Daily that he helped one of the injured hikers and said the man was “tore up pretty bad” with cuts all over his body.
