Written by A minor earthquake was logged in southeast Ohio on Monday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The USGS said that around 4:06 a.m., a 2.2-magnitude quake struck around seven kilometers north of New Marshfield in Athens County, which is around 10 miles from Ohio University. There is little information about the quake, but the USGS said it was reported to be around 13.4 kilometers in depth.
It’s not a common occurrence for the area, and no other earthquakes of any magnitude have been reported in Southern Ohio in the last 30 days, according to USGS data. According to a 2024 report from the Ohio Geological Survey and Department of Natural Resources, 129 earthquakes were recorded in Ohio that year.
