Man pulled from rubble in ‘miraculous’ rescue 8 days after devastating Venezuela earthquakes

Rescuers pulled a man from under the rubble of a nine-story building in Venezuela in a “miraculous” operation eight days after the devastating earthquakes that hit the country. Hernán Alberto Gil Flores, who was buried under 29 feet of wreckage from a collapsed shopping mall parking lot in La Guaira, was freed on Thursday amid a delicate days-long effort by local and international rescue teams. Gil, who is in his 40s and worked as a security guard at the mall, is in “good condition” after being rescued from the rubble of the collapsed building eight days after Venezuela’s twin earthquakes, according to Chile’s fire brigade.

It took 70 hours to rescue him, the fire brigade said in a statement, adding that he has been transferred to a medical facility. “Fortunately, once we received Mr. Hernan in the ambulance, he was stable,” Venezuelan Red Cross paramedic Luis Rodríguez, who assisted with the rescue, told Reuters news from the scene. “During the whole ride he was conscious, focused and collaborating, and all of his vital signs were within normal.” Gil’s wife, Gusvimar Gonzales, told CNN moments before the successful rescue that she had experienced “days of great sorrow” following the earthquakes as she thought he might be dead.

“But once I found out that he was alive I saw a ray of sunshine,” she said. “He was holding up like a hero.” She added that his kids are waiting for him at home. Video shows the moment rescuers first made visual contact with Gil via a search camera fed into the collapsed basement of the building on Wednesday. The man’s fingers could be seen waving though a small gap between layers of thick concrete and debris, in the video posted by the Chile Fire Department. Emergency crews said they had been communicating with Gil and giving him water, food and medication, with fluids passed to him via a hose and syringe. Video posted on Thursday shows Gil’s head and shoulders half emerged from the rubble.

He can be seen wearing a mask and with a bloodshot eye. The Chile Fire Department described the rescue operation as “highly complex” as the building remained unstable and teams had to contend with falling debris. Sebastián Mocorquer, from the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination team, told CNN on Thursday that “only miraculous rescues have been achieved” seven days after an earthquake. The so-called “golden window” for finding survivors is usually a three-day period after which the chances of survival without a water source diminishes rapidly. Rescuers were first alerted that someone may still be alive under the rubble of the Galerias Playa Grande shopping mall on Sunday, according to the Costa Rican Red Cross.

Teams were able to confirm the presence of a survivor using radar sonar and sound detection equipment, the Chile Fire Department said. For three days, rescuers and specialists from about half a dozen countries have worked to clear a safe passage through the rubble and provide Gil with life support. Video shared by El Salvador President Nayib Bukele shows a rescuer talking with Gil, and using a hose to deliver him an orange liquid –– potentially an electrolyte drink –– as teams prepared to rescue him. “Are you hurt?” the rescuer is heard asking him. “No, I’m not hurt. I’m just uncomfortable because of the rocks,” he replies. Bukele said the operation to try to free him had been difficult as the tunnel rescuers had excavated had suffered several collapses. “Rescue teams from several countries have been working together tirelessly to stabilize the tunnel, shoring it up, reinforcing it and isolating it, but it has not been possible to hold it up,” he said.

Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodríguez heralded the rescue on Thursday, saying: “Today we celebrate the life of Hernán Gil. Thank you to the national and international rescue workers who gave their bodies, their time, and their souls to this mission.” The coastal city of La Guaira, where Gil was found, was one of the hardest-hit parts of the country from the two massive earthquakes, and rescue operations remain ongoing. CNN has seen people using pickaxes, shovels and their bare hands to break apart the collapsed high-rise apartment buildings, as fuel and resources are in short supply despite Venezuela’s huge oil reserves.

On Wednesday, National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez – the acting president’s brother – announced that at least 2,295 had died, an increase of about 350 from the day before. But the casualty figure is believed to be much larger. One forensic pathologist, who asked to remain anonymous due to her fear of retaliation, told CNN the makeshift morgue where she works in La Guaira is processing around 400 bodies a day.

Acting President Delcy Rodríguez said early Thursday there are at least 32 people dead and 700 injured after two powerful earthquakes struck northwest Venezuela within a minute of each other Wednesday evening. She warned the toll was expected to rise as rescuers search collapsed buildings and emergency crews reach devastated areas. Communities across the South American country sustained damage. The U.S. Geological Survey said the temblors had magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5. The agency’s predictive modeling indicated the quakes could have killed thousands of people, with a 42% chance of at least 10,000 fatalities, thought that is based on historical averages and does not take into account many factors specific to this event. La Guaria, on the nation’s northern coast, apparently was the hardest hit state, Rodriguez said. “Dozens of buildings have collapsed and we are engaged in the arduous task of rescuing the lives that God allows us to save. The state of La Guaira is facing a true tragedy and has become a disaster zone,” she said.

The earthquakes, among the strongest to strike Venezuela in more than a century, roiled the region, with buildings evacuated in cities and areas impacted as far as Brazil’s Amazon about 1,050 miles from Venezuela’s capital of Caracas. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on social media early Thursday that, at President Trump’s direction, the U.S. is deploying search teams, medical resources and humanitarian aid to Venezuela. Rubio spoke with Rodriguez and offered the full assistance of the U.S., a State Department official told CBS News, adding that those efforts were already underway. Rodriguez later confirmed the call in a social media post. Earlier, Mr. Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that, “The two major earthquakes that just hit the great people of Venezuela are both massive in scale and have left a devastating number of deaths. The U.S.A. stands ready, willing, and able to help! I have instructed all agencies of our government to get ready to move quickly. We will be there for our new and great friends. Early reports are not good!” Jeremy P. Lewin, the U.S. undersecretary of state for foreign assistance, said the State Department had mobilized a disaster assistance team and task force to coordinate the aid in coordination with the interim Venezuelan government. Offers of help came from governments including those of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, China, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Panama and Uruguay.   In a brief address to the nation late Wednesday, Rodriguez declared a state of emergency. The quakes damaged the country’s main airport, Simón Bolívar International Airport, severely enough to lead to its closure, she said, adding that classes at the nation’s schools were being canceled for several days.

“We urge our population to remain calm,” Rodríguez said. “We urge unity.” Rodríguez also asked all health care professionals in the country to report to hospitals to assist anyone who was injured. The Ministry of Education late Wednesday said some schools would be used as shelters and donation centers. In the coastal state of Falcon, Gov. Víctor Clark said 32 people had been hospitalized and more than four hours after the earthquake there were still 15 people trapped. The first earthquake was centered 17.6 miles northwest of the town of Montalbán, the USGS said, and struck at a depth of 8.2 miles. It was preliminarily reported as a 7.1 magnitude quake before being upgraded to a 7.2.  Less than one minute later, a second earthquake measuring at a magnitude of 7.5 struck just north of the first. It was centered about 21 miles northwest of Montalbán.  “This earthquake was the second event in a doublet, this magnitude 7.5 mainshock was preceded just 39 seconds before by a 7.2 foreshock,” the USGS said. The quakes briefly triggered tsunami advisories in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, per the National Weather Service’s U.S. Tsunami Warning System. Those advisories were later canceled.  People remained on the streets of Caracas for hours, even after sunset. Some sat on the ground hugging their pets as dust gathered around them. Collapsed buildings, toppled electric poles and debris blocked streets. Parts of the capital lost power and cellphone signal.  The lack of cellphone signal in parts of Venezuela deepened the distress of many families, particularly those among the more than 7.7 million people who have left the country during its protracted crisis. People evacuated swaying buildings in Caracas and remained outside, many visibly shocked as they saw entire walls that had collapsed, making furniture visible from the street. Dust columns could also be seen in two neighborhoods of the capital, where restaurants and other businesses are typically busy.  Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello said the Altamira neighborhood in Caracas had “alarming situations” with collapsed homes and buildings. He urged people to remain outside as aftershocks could further damage some structures. “We understand that some people may be desperate, but we are acting according to protocols to activate aid and rescue efforts to help those who need it most,” Cabello said on state TV. “Be very careful with children and the elderly; call each other and check that no one has been harmed.”  He also urged people to remain outside as aftershocks could further damage some structures.

Cubillos Maria Alejandra, a woman who escaped a collapsed building in Caracas, told Reuters that “all the walls were cracked” when the earthquakes struck.   “We managed to open the door however we could,” she said. “There was a cloud of smoke that wouldn’t let us see. And when we went downstairs, the scene was like a horror movie. We had to climb over the rubble and everything. The building superintendent with the baby and all the neighbors coming down. Unreal. The force was incredibly strong,” Caracas resident Roberto Damas said. “We were walking and it was tossing us around. Everything in the apartment fell. Well, thank God we were able to get out.” Exiled Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado wrote on X, “My heart, my infinite embrace, and my prayers are with every Venezuelan home in these hours of anguish. May strength, serenity, and solidarity prevail among us in the face of this difficult moment.” Buildings in Manaus, Belem and Macapá in Brazil’s Amazon were evacuated, according to reports on TV Globo. The quakes were also felt in Colombia’s Caribbean and northeast regions, but there were no reports of damage or injuries. The Colombian Maritime Authority said in a statement that the country’s Caribbean coast wasn’t at risk of a tsunami. Strong earthquakes are unusual in Venezuela. While the country sits near multiple fault lines, its position straddling the South American and Caribbean plates makes earthquakes much less common than in other parts of Latin America. Along the Pacific coast — in Mexico and Chile, for example — earthquakes are frequent. Those two countries sit along the seismically active tectonic belt known as the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” responsible for 90% of earthquakes, according to the USGS.

Tsunami watch triggered after 7.8 magnitude earthquake shakes southern Philippines

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake shook part of the southern Philippines early Monday, causing damage in a key coastal city, knocking down power and sparking a tsunami warning on some regional coasts. People were urged to go to higher ground. There were no immediate reports of casualties, and it was not clear if people were trapped or injured in the collapse of a small building in General Santos city. The coastal city of more than 700,000 people is a commercial hub on the island of Mindanao known for its tuna processing industry. The epicenter was 8 miles southwest of General Santos and had a depth of 6.2 miles, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

It struck at 7:37 a.m. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said tsunami waves up to 10 feet were possible on some coasts of the Philippines. Waves up to 3 feet were possible on some coasts of Indonesia and Malaysia. “We advise people to evacuate to higher grounds or go further inland,” Teresito Bacolcol, the head of the Philippine institute, warned people living in coastal areas. Smaller sea changes were possible in Taiwan, Japan, Guam, Papua New Guinea and several island nations and territories in the western Pacific. There was no threat to Hawaii, the PTWC said. DZRH radio station in Manila reported that the small commercial building where its provincial branch was located partly collapsed and staffers dashed to the ground floor without injuries. It wasn’t clear if other people were trapped in the rubble of the four-story office building due to the quake, which struck before office hours.

Residents also felt the earthquake tremors in north-central Indonesia, and tsunami waves up to 7 inches were recorded on some coasts of North Sulawesi and North Maluku provinces. Aftershocks up to 6.5 magnitude followed, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It measured the original quake at 34 miles deep. Variations in measurements by different agencies are common in the immediate aftermath of an earthquake. The Philippines, one of the world’s most disaster-prone countries, is often hit by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of seismic faults around the ocean.

An early morning earthquake in Nevada on Friday was felt as far west as the Sacramento Valley. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake struck around 1:17 a.m. about 50 miles east of Carson City. Shaking was reported across the Reno, Carson City and South Lake Tahoe areas. People also reported feeling shaking along the Sierra Nevada foothills and into the valley, including in Roseville and Sacramento. No damage has been reported.

Two earthquakes struck off San Francisco’s coast Saturday afternoon, with weak shaking reported, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. A preliminary magnitude 3.0 struck around 4:40 p.m. just off the coast of San Francisco. A preliminary magnitude 2.7 followed minutes later.  There’s been weak shaking reported across San Francisco and San Mateo, according to the USGS website.  No damage has been reported at this time.

Major earthquake off Japan’s north coast prompts tsunami alert

Tokyo — A powerful earthquake struck off the northern Japanese coast Monday, prompting the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) to issue a tsunami alert in the region. The quake registering a preliminary magnitude of 7.5 occurred off the coast of Sanriku in northern Japan at around 4:53 p.m. (2:53 a.m. Eastern on Sunday), at a depth of about 6 miles below the sea surface, the agency said. The JMA reported the first tsunami waves, about three feet high, hitting a port in Kuji, in the northern Iwate Prefecture.

ITTEFAQ, Afghanistan — For several minutes after the earthquake struck, he could hear their screams. Then there was silence. Mohibullah Niazi, a neighbor who helped in the rescue efforts, said Saturday that the eight people killed on the outskirts of Kabul after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan the previous night were a refugee family recently returned from neighboring Iran. There was only one survivor: a boy of around 3 years old, who was injured and has been hospitalized in Kabul.

Afghanistan’s deputy government spokesman Hamdullah Fitrat on Saturday increased the overall death toll from the quake to 12, with another four people injured. The Afghanistan Disaster Management Authority put the overall death toll at nine. The reason for the discrepancy was not immediately clear. The family near Kabul was among the millions of Afghan refugees who have recently returned from Iran and Pakistan, after both countries launched crackdowns in 2023 on foreigners — particularly Afghans — living in their countries. They had arrived 15 days ago and were living in a tent on land next to Niazi’s home. The family head, Najibullah, who was about 50 years old, “had no other shelter,” Niazi said. “He was a very poor person.”

An undersea magnitude -7.4 earthquake toppled buildings in parts of northern Indonesia, sent people fleeing from their homes, killed at least one person and generated a small tsunami Thursday. Waves up to 30 inches above normal tides were recorded at several monitoring stations about a half-hour after the earthquake, which was centered in the Molucca Sea. Indonesia’s meteorological agency lifted its tsunami warning hours after the quake, and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said there was no destructive threat to the country, which is north of the quake’s epicenter.

Strong shaking lasting 10 to 20 seconds was felt in Bitung in North Sulawesi province as well as in Ternate city in neighboring North Maluku province, according to Indonesia’s Disaster Management Agency. Initial assessments showed light to severe damage in parts of Ternate, including a church and two houses. In Bitung, damage assessments were still underway, the agency said. Indonesia’s Search and Rescue Agency reported a 70-year-old woman died in a building collapse in North Sulawesi’s Manado city and another resident was injured. At least three injured people were hospitalized in Ternate.
