Convicted killer Karmelo Anthony’s family used fundraiser money for moving and living expenses. Karmelo Anthony will serve his sentence while it appears the fundraising campaign for his family organized by his mother, Kala Hayes, has been taken down. Anthony was convicted of murder and sentenced to 35 years behind bars on Tuesday. He has since filed a notice of appeal to challenge the conviction. The fundraiser was posted on GiveSendGo, an international crowdfunding platform, on April 15, 2025. It was less than two weeks after Anthony fatally stabbed 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas.

All the while, the fundraiser for Anthony and his family, titled, “Help Karmelo Official Fund,” initially had a goal of generating nearly $1.4 million, and raised just shy of $634,000. The now-defunct fundraiser shared this purpose, according to the website. “While legal defense is a critical part of this journey, we want to make it clear that this fund is not solely dedicated to legal expenses. The funds raised will also support a range of urgent and necessary means that have emerged as a result of the situation, including – but not limited to – the safe relocation of the Anthony family due to escalating threats to their safety and well-being, as well as basic living costs, transportation, counseling, and other security measures.”

Suspect in killings of 3 elderly men in Hawaii arrested after massive manhunt

A man wanted in connection with the killings of three men was apprehended Thursday after a massive search of Hawaii’s Big Island that had left residents on edge. Police said Jacob Baker, 36, of Pahoa, Hawaii, was arrested on suspicion of murder, burglary and other charges following a search that involved “significant resources,” including help from state and federal authorities. They described him as “armed and extremely dangerous.” Authorities said they believe Baker was involved in the deaths of three men: a 69-year-old found partially submerged in a cement pond, a 79-year-old who was found just a few hundred feet away, and a 69-year-old whose body was found about 19 miles away.

The killings took place over two days in a remote and mostly rural part of the island, which is the largest in the Hawaiian chain at more than 4,000 square miles. The area is a mix of tropical landscape and barren lava fields. Police received information Thursday afternoon that Baker was hiding in a grassy area, ducking down as traffic passed, Hawaii Police Chief Reed Mahuna said at news conference after the arrest. Police found him hiding in a small cave and arrested him.

Three tribal church pastors from the Thadou Baptist Association (TBA) of India were killed, and four others were injured in an armed ambush on May 13 in Kangpokpi district of Manipur. Roughly 10 armed men used automatic weapons to shoot two vehicles carrying the church leaders as they returned from a peace and reconciliation conference in Churachandpur. The murders triggered a wave of retaliatory abductions and hostage-taking between rival armed groups across several districts, fracturing the already fragile atmosphere. The incident caused immediate panic and deep outrage across tribal communities statewide, sparking spontaneous protests and highway blockades.

The Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) and the Kuki Organization for Human Rights Trust (KOHUR) alleged the involvement of the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF), specifically the Kamson faction, possibly in coordination with valley-based insurgent groups in the ambush and killings. Rev. Dr. Sitlhou was a prominent advocate for peace, having recently led a delegation to Nagaland to broker reconciliation between the Kuki and Tangkhul Naga communities. He was a notable bridge-builder working on dialogues between the two. Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has condemned the incident and urged swift justice. Singh condemned the ambush as a “senseless act of violence” and promised full state resources to bring the perpetrators to justice. The chief ministers of Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Mizoram similarly expressed deep outrage.

Hostages Released Manipur’s conflict landscape involves three major ethnic groups: the Meiteis, the Nagas, and the Kuki-Zo communities. These groups largely live in separate geographical belts and pockets where each forms a local majority. The killing occurred amid persistent tensions between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities following the ethnic violence that broke out on May 3, 2023. “What began over issues of Scheduled Tribe status, land rights, forest governance, and demographic concerns has now expanded into a dangerous triangular confrontation involving Meiteis, Kuki-Zo, and Nagas,” John Dayal, a noted human rights activist, stated in media reports.

Following the pastors’ deaths, heavily armed factions — largely aligned with Kuki-Zo and Naga groups — began detaining civilians from opposing tribal factions in the Kangpokpi and Senapati districts. State officials reported that as many as 38 civilians, including women and other religious figures, were taken hostage by rival militias in retaliation and moved to undisclosed locations. The crisis sparked widespread fears of civil war. To prevent further deterioration, Manipur government officials, security forces, and church leaders initiated emergency negotiations.

After 13 years, a case involving the July 2013 killings of a Miami Gardens pastor and her grandson has concluded, with the two convicted men accepting plea deals for two counts of second-degree murder. Reginald Jackson and Roderick Martin stood before Judge Ellen Sue Venzer in a Miami-Dade courtroom on Wednesday and were sentenced to a combined 65 years in state prison. “Mr. Jackson, you’re pleading guilty to two counts of second-degree murder with a firearm along with two counts of robbery with a firearm, deadly weapon,” Judge Venzer said. “Yes, ma’am,” Jackson responded.

Jackson and Martin pleaded guilty to the lesser charges in connection with the deaths of 70-year-old Annette Anderson, a pastor, and her 20-year-old grandson, Tyrone Walker Jr. “Are you pleading guilty to these charges because you are guilty of these charges?” the judge asked Martin. “Yes,” Martin replied. Why the plea deal was delayed  The plea deal was delayed last week after Jackson had an outburst in court when his family was misinformed about the hearing time. Jackson said in court, “I’d rather my mom see me at trial so I can see her one last time,” referencing his grandmother, who he said died months after attending a previous hearing.

The FBI on Tuesday announced a reward of $50,000 for the arrest and conviction of a man wanted in the 2021 shooting death of a National Guard member. Joseph “Troubles” Matos has already been indicted by a grand jury in the shooting that killed Illinois National Guard soldier Chrys Carvajal on July 3, 2021. Matos and co-defendant Gary “Gotti” Roberson are accused of killing Carvajal “for the purpose of maintaining and increasing position in the Milwaukee Kings” street gang, according to a May 2024 indictment.

According to the indictment, the Milwaukee Kings gang operates on the North Side of Chicago and carries out murders and other acts of violence to preserve and protect its power and territory, to further illegal drug trafficking, and to keep others in fear of the gang. Carvajal, 19, who had just returned home after Army National Guard training, was leaving a party on July 3, 2021, and walking to his car when he was shot and killed at the corner of Lockwood Avenue and Palmer Street in Chicago’s Belmont Cragin neighborhood.

Edwin Rapalo-Lorenzo, a 27-year-old illegal alien, has been arrested by the Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office and charged with vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of a crash involving death, leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury, and driving without a valid driver’s license.

According to police, on April 11, Rapalo-Lorenzo was driving when he crossed into another lane and crashed head-on into a motorcycle with two passengers. The driver of the motorcycle, Giovany Negron Talavera, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second passenger, a woman named Ana, with whom Talavera worked, was rushed to a nearby hospital and remains in critical condition. Family and friends have created a GoFundMe for Talavera’s funeral expenses as well as helping Ana’s family pay her medical bills. They describe Talavera as an “exceptional father, son, brother, and friend.” “He was also a dedicated mechanic who worked hard every day to provide for his family.

He was known for his kindness, his strong work ethic, and his willingness to always help others,” the GoFundMe reads. “His presence brought comfort, his smile brought light, and his love will forever remain in all of us.” Meanwhile, Ana continues fighting for her life in the hospital. She has three children, including a 15-year-old. “This tragedy has not only taken a loving father, but has also left a mother fighting for her life and children holding on to hope,” the GoFundMe reads.

A Washington state woman, who at times smiled in court, has been sentenced to nearly three decades in prison for the killing of her father, a case prosecutors say was marked by weeks of planning. Alyssa Bradburn, 33, was sentenced April 2 in Spokane County Superior Court to 340 months in prison after a jury found her guilty of first-degree murder with a firearm enhancement in the 2024 killing of her father, Timothy Bradburn. The sentence, roughly 28 years, comes about a month after jurors returned the guilty verdict.

Prosecutors said Bradburn showed little emotion throughout the trial, often sitting stoically and at times smiling. During her testimony, she said she “enjoyed” the trial process but believed she deserved punishment and would accept her sentence. “I killed Tim Bradburn, and I am guilty,” she said during trial, smiling, according to The Spokesman-Review. “I’m not afraid anymore. I’m OK with going to prison for however long.” According to court documents and testimony cited by prosecutors, Bradburn called 911 on June 25, 2024, and reported that she had shot her father as he returned home from a trip to Hawaii.

Two lesbian foster moms tortured a 12-year-old boy by forcing him to wear a soaking wetsuit as they mocked him in gut-wrenching messages before he was tragically found dead, prosecutors claim. The disturbing claims about the death of the Canadian child, identified only as LL, have come to light during the murder trial of Becky Hamber, 44, and 46-year-old Brandy Cooney. LL, who died on December 21, 2022, was found soaking wet, unresponsive, and emaciated in the basement of the couple’s Toronto-area home before being pronounced dead at the hospital, the court was told.

Attorneys finished their closing arguments on Friday, as both women have denied charges of first-degree murder, unlawful confinement, and assault with a weapon, according to Law & Crime.  Prosecutors used their final remarks to detail how the women allegedly starved LL and his younger brother, who has been identified as JL, and forced them to wear wetsuits and helmets. The foster mothers, who were in the process of adopting the boys, did it because they ‘hated’ the boys, attorneys told the court.
