Director Steven Spielberg suggested during a Sunday interview that his new film about extraterrestrials might raise theological questions among some Christians regarding the nature of the cosmos. Speaking with Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz on “CBS News Sunday Morning,” Spielberg said “Disclosure Day,” his upcoming movie about a meteorologist and a cybersecurity expert exposing the government’s cover-up of extraterrestrial secrets, will touch on the implications such a revelation would have for religious people.
“There’s a faction in the film that represents a pretty good position of why — possibly because of ontological shock, social dislocation — if this truth… were just known overnight, if the government announced, ‘Yes, we have been keeping this from you since 1947,’ that would mess up a lot of people.” Spielberg also said the film, one of whose characters is a former Roman Catholic nun, “also takes the position of the [Catholic] Church.” “What does this do to the fundamental beliefs that many of us have? Is God, our God, only on this planet, or is God a God for every system where there’s civilization, intelligent life and even developing life?” he said of the questions the movie will raise.
Mankiewicz teased that the nun character in the movie “is a really important role” with an important line, presumably drawn from the text of the Lord’s Prayer. A clip of Spielberg’s comments went viral on X from an account that framed them as claiming that extraterrestrial disclosure would shake the faith of Christians, which many users pushed back on. “No it won’t. Hollywood is obsessed with the idea that the discovery of aliens will rock Christian faith. It’s weird,” said Christian podcaster Josh Daws. “The only people who think the existence of aliens would mess with Christianity are non-Christians who don’t understand the first thing about Christianity,” said Eric Sammons, who is editor-in-chief of Crisis Magazine.
“Disclosure Day” is slated for a theatrical release on Friday and comes amid heightened debate among Christians regarding the nature of so-called extraterrestrials and UFOs, with some claiming the phenomena are inextricable with the occult and demonic. Last week, Cardinal Robert McElroy removed Monsignor Stephen J. Rossetti, a priest with the Diocese of Syracuse, as an exorcist in the Archdiocese of Washington after he went viral for expressing his opinion that “probably many, if not most, of these UFO sightings are, in fact, demons.” Despite his removal, Rossetti’s views align with those expressed by other Catholic clergy, including Father Chad Ripperger, who serves as an exorcist in the Archdiocese of Denver.
Some occultists have also historically linked UFO phenomena to sorcery. The late British ceremonial magician Kenneth Grant, who studied under the infamous occultist Aleister Crowley, attributed the wave of UFO sightings beginning in 1947 to occult rituals conducted the year before by NASA rocket engineer Jack Parsons and Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. The potentially spiritual nature of UFOs, extraterrestrials, interdimensionals and related phenomena has increasingly emerged as a topic of discussion on influential podcasts and among prominent officials in recent months.
Last month, a group of Charismatic pastors raised eyebrows and stoked controversy for claiming they had a meeting about UFOs with U.S. officials, who reportedly warned them to prepare their churches for the theological implications of disclosure. Rep. Eric Burlison, R-Mo., who reportedly called into the meeting, pushed back against the claim.

17,000 Baptized in Historic Worldwide Event: ‘Saying Yes to Jesus’, Michael Foust – Read breaking news headlies with a Christian perspective and commentary from Michael Foust. A gathering at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C., served as the focal point for the May 24 global event, featuring worship, personal testimonies, and live updates from participating churches around the world. Attendees watched baptisms take place across multiple nations as believers publicly professed their faith.
Baptize the World grew out of a movement led by Pastor Mark Francey of Oceans Church in California, whose previous initiatives – Baptize SoCal, Baptize California, and Baptize America – drew thousands of participants.
“This was never about one event or one location,” Francey said. “This was about the body of Christ coming together around the world to lift up the name of Jesus and publicly declare new life through baptism.”
He added, “From Washington, D.C., to nations around the world, we witnessed people saying yes to Jesus in a way that was visible, powerful, and deeply personal.”
Francey launched the movement after sensing about four years ago that God was calling him to organize a large-scale baptism event. Like its predecessors, Baptize the World was a multi-denominational effort that united churches around the public declaration of faith through baptism.
The movement began with more than 4,000 baptisms at Baptize SoCal in 2023 and grew to roughly 12,000 baptisms during Baptize California in 2024, held simultaneously in churches across the state and along the Huntington Beach shoreline.
“Psalms 133 says that where God’s people are in unity, God commands a blessing,” Francey previously told Crosswalk Headlines. “And so interdenominationally, from one side of the church world to the other side, we have some of the great Baptist churches, evangelical churches, Pentecostal churches, all linking arms together around one of the major creeds of the faith.”
Organizers received video updates and baptism reports from nations across the world, including Australia, Uganda, Pakistan, South Korea, Brazil, Romania, Switzerland, the Philippines, and Canada.
“Among the stories emerging from the global movement were baptisms in Tajikistan, where Christians make up less than 1% of the population, and in Equatorial Guinea, where nine siblings were baptized together,” a Baptize the World report said. “Organizers said additional stories from international churches are continuing to come in as more nations and churches report baptisms.”

Idleman recalled feeling unwell in January, with night sweats and exhaustion.

The Coalition for Marriage (C4M) has called for an end to the sexualisation of children in schools and has denounced plans for a “summer of sex” at Westminster. C4M pointed to official guidelines on sex education as well as some concerning cases that suggest many children are being exposed to inappropriate material and are being indoctrinated into a certain view of sex and sexuality. According to government guidelines children as young as three can be taught about where babies come from, while from age five they can be taught that same gender parents are the equivalent of opposite gender parents.
At age 12 they can be taught that it is their right to have sex, despite it being illegal to do so until age 16. Richard Lucas, leader of the Scottish Family Party, told C4M that such material “corrupts young minds”, adding that such education rarely, if ever, mentions marriage as the proper and most stable framework within which sexual relations can take place. C4M reports that sex education has sometimes gone so far that even secular authorities have felt the need to intervene. It pointed to a school on the Isle of Man, which in 2023 suspended sex education after 11-year-old children were allegedly traumatised by lessons that covered oral and anal sex, how an artificial penis can be created for a sex change operation, and the number of genders there supposedly are.
In one incident, a drag queen allegedly sent an upset child out of class after the child insisted there are two genders, rather than the 73 being claimed by the drag queen. The school later said that the pupil had been temporarily removed from the room by a teacher, not the drag queen, and not because of the guest speaker’s conversation about inclusion but to remind the pupil that they did “not have to agree with the guest speaker” but “must show respect”. C4M has also taken issue with plans this summer by Labour MP Samantha Niblett to launch a “summer of sex” in collaboration with Cindy Gallop, founder of MakeLoveNotPorn, which, despite the name, is in fact a pornography website.
MakeLoveNotPorn claims to differ from “traditional” pornography by featuring ordinary people having sex as opposed to professional “performers”. Gallop also runs a sex education site which is aimed at ages “0 to 18 and beyond”. Dr Tony Rucinski, Director of Supporter Strategy at C4M, suggested that the “summer of sex” was yet more evidence of the mainstreaming of inappropriate sexual material in public. The Christian Institute has also hit out at the plans, with spokesperson Angus Saul saying: “Explaining to children and other young people that pornography presents a distorted view of relationships is a laudable objective, but this campaign is only going to give a very mixed message by suggesting that some porn is good and some is bad.
“This will only confuse people further, and will surely detract from the work going on elsewhere to limit children’s access to pornography and reverse the damage this material has wreaked on society.”

After 13 years, a case involving the July 2013 killings of a Miami Gardens pastor and her grandson has concluded, with the two convicted men accepting plea deals for two counts of second-degree murder. Reginald Jackson and Roderick Martin stood before Judge Ellen Sue Venzer in a Miami-Dade courtroom on Wednesday and were sentenced to a combined 65 years in state prison. “Mr. Jackson, you’re pleading guilty to two counts of second-degree murder with a firearm along with two counts of robbery with a firearm, deadly weapon,” Judge Venzer said. “Yes, ma’am,” Jackson responded.
Jackson and Martin pleaded guilty to the lesser charges in connection with the deaths of 70-year-old Annette Anderson, a pastor, and her 20-year-old grandson, Tyrone Walker Jr. “Are you pleading guilty to these charges because you are guilty of these charges?” the judge asked Martin. “Yes,” Martin replied. Why the plea deal was delayed The plea deal was delayed last week after Jackson had an outburst in court when his family was misinformed about the hearing time. Jackson said in court, “I’d rather my mom see me at trial so I can see her one last time,” referencing his grandmother, who he said died months after attending a previous hearing.

Here’s a summary of the key abortion-related developments from the past seven days. Activity centered on state-level legislative pushes (especially in South Carolina), ongoing medication-abortion access fights, and cultural polling—amid continued post-Dobbs stability in national numbers (per earlier 2025 data). No sweeping federal rulings or new nationwide data drops occurred this week.
South Carolina: No-Exception Abortion Ban Advances
A South Carolina Senate committee advanced SB 1095, a near-total ban on abortions from the onset of pregnancy with no exceptions for rape, incest, or fatal fetal anomalies. The bill would criminalize women for obtaining or possessing abortion drugs (up to 2 years in prison and a $1,000 fine). It now heads to the full Senate floor. scdailygazette.com +2
During the April 22 Republican gubernatorial debate, candidates split sharply on whether they would support or veto such a ban—highlighting internal GOP tensions ahead of the 2026 election. scdailygazette.com
Medication Abortion & Federal/Regulatory Updates
A federal judge refused to immediately block mailing of abortion pills but ordered the FDA to complete its ongoing safety review. The ruling came amid pressure from anti-abortion groups and the Trump administration’s continued scrutiny of mifepristone. pagingamerica.org
Anti-abortion advocates (including Students for Life) urged the EPA to list mifepristone metabolites as drinking-water contaminants, part of broader efforts to restrict pill access through environmental and regulatory channels. pagingamerica.org
Cultural & Polling Notes
A PBS report highlighted the growing gender divide among Gen Z on abortion: While most Americans support legal access in all or most cases, young men and women are sharply split, reflecting deeper differences in how the generation views reproductive rights. youtube.com
Broader Context (No New 2026 Incidence Data)
The most recent full-year figures (Guttmacher Institute, released March 2026) showed ~1,126,000 clinician-provided abortions in 2025—essentially unchanged from 2024—despite bans and restrictions in 13 total-ban states and 5 with early limits (including Wyoming’s new 6-week law). Telehealth and out-of-state access continue to offset restrictions. npr.org +1
2026 Ballot Landscape (Ongoing Prep)
Preparations continue for November 2026 ballot measures in states like Virginia (Right to Reproductive Freedom Amendment) and Missouri (repeal effort). No new certifications or major court developments this week, but litigation challenging Virginia’s measure remains active. kff.org +1
These stories reflect the steady grind of state legislation and regulatory pressure on medication abortion, with South Carolina’s no-exception push emerging as the week’s most prominent flashpoint. National numbers remain stable, but access battles—especially around pills—continue in courts and legislatures. For the latest on any specific bill or case, check official state legislative trackers or Guttmacher’s policy map. Developments can move quickly.

Coverage of Christian persecution this week focused on follow-up reporting from earlier Holy Week and Easter violence (late March/early April), alongside isolated new incidents and urgent advocacy calls. No single large-scale new massacre dominated global headlines during this exact window, but organizations like International Christian Concern (ICC) and Open Doors continued to highlight ongoing patterns of targeted killings, abductions, and forced conversions—particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Social media and advocacy outlets kept these stories circulating amid broader global attention on other crises. persecution.org +1
Nigeria: Follow-Up on Fulani Militia Attacks
ICC reported that Fulani militias continued killing Christians in the wake of Holy Week massacres. Since Palm Sunday (late March), more than 200 Nigerians were killed across Plateau, Benue, Kaduna, and Taraba states, with at least 157 confirmed Christians. Attacks targeted farming communities late at night, often involving gunfire and machetes. This week’s updates emphasized the relentless pattern, with local bishops and human rights groups describing it as unchecked impunity. persecution.org +1

Global Context: Open Doors and ICC references to the 2026 World Watch List (released earlier) were frequently cited, noting 4,849 Christians killed worldwide for faith-related reasons in the prior reporting period (3,490 in Nigeria alone) and over 388 million facing high/extreme persecution. No new full report dropped this week, but the data framed ongoing stories. christianitytoday.com +1
These developments reflect persistent, under-reported violence and legal pressures rather than isolated spikes. Advocacy groups continue to call for prayer, sanctions on enablers, and greater international scrutiny—especially in Nigeria. For primary sources and ways to support persecuted believers, check ICC, Open Doors, or Aid to the Church in Need. Stories evolve quickly; the situation in Nigeria and the DRC remains particularly fluid.

Here’s a concise overview of the main abortion-related developments from the past seven days. Activity focused on medication abortion access (especially mifepristone by mail), federal enforcement disputes, and state-level legislative pushes. No major new national data drops occurred, but ongoing legal and political maneuvering continued post-Dobbs.
Federal Developments & Medication Abortion
Louisiana’s challenge to mifepristone mail-order paused: On April 7 (with rulings and coverage spilling into this week), a federal judge in Lafayette refused to block FDA rules allowing nationwide mailing of mifepristone. The decision is a temporary setback for Louisiana’s effort to restrict telehealth/mail access into ban states while its broader challenge proceeds. The case was paused pending Trump administration review. kffhealthnews.org
DOJ report accuses Biden admin of weaponizing FACE Act: On April 14, the Trump Justice Department released a report alleging the prior administration selectively prosecuted pro-life activists under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act. It claims coordination with abortion-rights groups (including Planned Parenthood) to track activists, seek harsher sentences, and withhold evidence. The report reviewed over 700,000 records. kfoxtv.com +1
Mail-order dominates mifepristone dispensing: A University of Southern California study (published April 13) found that in the 27 states + D.C. allowing telehealth abortion, pharmacies fill mifepristone prescriptions almost exclusively via mail-order (<2% at retail locations), despite 2023 FDA rules permitting pharmacy dispensing. reuters.com
State-Level Actions
Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly vetoes two GOP anti-abortion bills: On April 7, the Democratic governor vetoed measures that would have imposed new restrictions. Republican supermajorities in the legislature are expected to attempt overrides this week. kansasreflector.com
Ohio doctors push back on “extremist” bills: Over 150 physicians signed a letter opposing a package of bills in the Statehouse, including a 24-hour waiting period (“SHE WINS” Act). Coverage highlighted concerns over delays in care. pagingamerica.org
Mississippi criminalization bill advances: Lawmakers sent a bill to the governor that would make distributing or intending to distribute abortion-inducing medication a felony (up to 10 years in prison). Critics warn it could affect miscarriage treatment and deter providers. apnews.com
South Carolina Senate bill 1095: Introduced earlier but active in committee this week; it would prohibit abortions and impose penalties on providers. scstatehouse.gov
Broader Context
2026 ballot measures remain in focus: Ongoing preparations for November votes in states like Virginia (protecting rights), Missouri (repeal attempt), and potential measures in Idaho/Nebraska. No new certifications this week, but legal challenges to ballot language continue. kff.org +1
National abortion incidence remains stable (per earlier Guttmacher data referenced in coverage), with telehealth and mail-order shifts offsetting bans in 13 states.
These stories reflect continued tension around medication abortion access and enforcement, with the Trump administration signaling scrutiny of prior policies while states pursue tighter restrictions. Legal challenges and legislative overrides are likely to keep the issue active in coming weeks. For the latest on any specific case or bill, check primary sources like court dockets or state legislature trackers.

Christian persecution remained a significant but underreported story this week, with fresh updates centered on the aftermath of Holy Week/Easter violence in Nigeria, escalating attacks in Ethiopia, and quiet resilience in Syria. Advocacy efforts also gained attention amid broader global statistics from Open Doors’ ongoing 2026 World Watch List reporting. Here are the key verified developments from the past seven days:
Nigeria: Easter Attacks Aftermath and Funerals
Central Nigeria saw continued fallout from coordinated Holy Week attacks. Christians held funerals this week for victims of violence that claimed at least 157 lives in rural communities across Benue and surrounding areas during and immediately after Easter. Gunmen targeted Christian villages in what advocacy groups describe as part of a pattern of Islamist militant and bandit violence. persecution.org +1
On Easter Sunday (April 5, with reports emerging April 8), gunmen attacked a church congregation in Kaduna state, killing at least seven and taking 31 hostages. The Nigerian army claimed to have freed the hostages in a gunfight, but local Christian leaders disputed the account, saying the gunmen fled and the full story remains unclear. Similar incidents have been linked to Islamist militants in the region. religionmediacentre.org.uk
These events prompted renewed calls from U.S. figures and local bishops highlighting government inaction, though Nigerian officials rejected claims of “Christian genocide.” religionmediacentre.org.uk
Ethiopia: Rising Violence in East Arsi Zone
Church leaders expressed deep concern over a series of deadly attacks on Christian communities in the East Arsi Zone (Oromia Region) spanning late February through early April. Reports published this week detailed targeted violence forcing families to flee, with Islamist militants implicated in multiple incidents. This fits a broader pattern of insecurity for believers in parts of East Africa. persecution.org
Syria: Churches Resume Quiet Worship After Attack
Syrian churches quietly resumed meetings this week following a recent violent attack on Christian communities. The low-profile gatherings underscore ongoing security risks and displacement pressures in the post-Assad era, where minorities remain exposed. persecution.org
Holy Land/Gaza: Sombre Easter Reflections
Palestinian Christians in Gaza and the West Bank continued to report restrictions on access to holy sites during Easter observances, along with settler violence in the West Bank (including attacks on Christian families). Al Jazeera coverage this week highlighted a “sombre” atmosphere amid broader conflict, with some families noting relatives killed in recent strikes. aljazeera.com +2

No new full weekly report dropped this week, but the Easter violence reinforced the trends. instagram.com
These stories reflect persistent patterns of violence in Africa, restrictions in conflict zones, and growing advocacy pushes. Coverage was strongest in specialized Christian outlets and regional media, with limited mainstream pickup outside faith-focused circles. Organizations like ICC, Open Doors, and Aid to the Church in Need are actively monitoring and responding. For the latest on any specific incident, refer to primary sources from these groups.

Christian persecution made headlines this Holy Week, with violent attacks in Nigeria dominating coverage alongside targeted incidents in South Asia and restrictions in the Holy Land. Advocacy groups like International Christian Concern (ICC), Open Doors, and Aid to the Church in Need highlighted ongoing patterns of violence, mob attacks, and surveillance. Here are the key verified developments from the past seven days:
Nigeria: Palm Sunday Massacre in Jos
Gunmen attacked the predominantly Christian community of Angwan Rukuba (Ungwan Rukuba) in Jos North, Plateau State, on Palm Sunday (March 29–30). Reports confirm at least 30–53 Christians killed in the assault, which targeted villagers near a market/church area; some accounts mention machetes and gunfire. This fits a pattern of repeated attacks on Christian farming communities. persecution.org +1
The incident is part of escalating violence in the region, with ICC and Open Doors noting it as one of the deadliest Holy Week events. A U.S. senator (Ted Cruz) publicly warned that Nigerian officials are enabling such persecution through inaction and Sharia policies, stating Washington has identified enablers and has sanction tools ready. punchng.com
Local bishops described Holy Week as “not history, it is reality” for Nigerian Christians amid ongoing killings, church attacks, and displacement. churchinneed.org
Nepal: Hindu Mob Attacks Christians
On March 23 (reported March 31), a Hindu mob in Rautahat district confronted three Christians sharing the gospel, dragged them to a police station, and accused them of proselytizing. The incident underscores rising hostility toward religious minorities in Nepal. persecution.org
Pakistan: Christian Man Dies After Alleged Torture
A 22-year-old Christian man was found dead at a farmhouse in Punjab on or around March 27. Reports allege torture; the case has fueled concerns over systemic mistreatment of Christians in the country. persecution.org
Jerusalem (Holy Land): Restrictions on Palm Sunday Worship
On March 30 (Palm Sunday), Israeli forces denied Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa entry to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, preventing him from celebrating Mass. The International Christian Justice and Peace (ICJP) condemned it as religious persecution and an affront to freedom at one of Christianity’s holiest sites. Similar tensions were noted in Gaza and Syria. icjpalestine.com
Iran: Ongoing Pressure on Converts
Open Doors reported continued arrests, surveillance, and “propaganda against national security” charges against Christian converts. At least 48 believers remain imprisoned, with digital monitoring intensifying amid regional conflicts. opendoorsus.org
Other Regional Notes
DRC (Ituri Province): Recent attacks by Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) killed around 50 people and displaced over 31,600 in mid-March; news broke widely this week with calls for prayer. opendoorsuk.org
Broader context from Open Doors and ICC: Over 388 million Christians face high persecution globally (1 in 7), with sub-Saharan Africa seeing extreme violence. No new full World Watch List update this week, but Holy Week reports emphasized prayer for the persecuted church. thecommonsense.co.za
These stories reflect persistent patterns of violence (especially in Africa), mob intimidation (South Asia), and official restrictions. Advocacy organizations continue to call for international attention and support. For full details, refer to the primary reports from ICC, Open Doors, and local outlets. Developments can evolve quickly, particularly in Nigeria.

Here’s a focused summary of the key abortion-related developments from the past seven days, based on legislative activity, court-adjacent races, and fresh data. Activity remains centered on medication abortion restrictions, state-level enforcement, and national incidence trends post-Dobbs.
National Data Update
The Guttmacher Institute released full-year 2025 abortion incidence data showing remarkable stability: approximately 1,126,000 abortions provided by clinicians nationwide—nearly identical to 2024’s 1,124,000. While out-of-state travel declined, telehealth provision to patients in total-ban states continued to rise sharply, offsetting restrictions. Analysts noted abortion numbers have remained steady or slightly increased despite bans in 13 states and early limits in others. ballsandstrikes.org +1
Federal Legislative and Political Developments
Sen. Josh Hawley’s mifepristone ban bill: The Missouri Republican’s legislation to force the FDA to withdraw approval of the primary abortion pill (mifepristone) and allow patient lawsuits against manufacturers gained attention. House Republicans are reportedly distancing themselves from the measure ahead of the 2026 midterms, with many avoiding public endorsement despite party platform alignment. plannedparenthoodaction.org +1
Senate Republicans voted to block abortion access provisions for veterans and their families. plannedparenthoodaction.org
A new congressional bill introduced this week uses environmental protection language to target medication abortion. It would require patients using abortion pills to employ medical waste kits (based on disputed water pollution claims) and explicitly ban telehealth abortion care—moves described by reproductive rights groups as surveillance and restriction tactics. instagram.com
State-Level Actions
Arizona: GOP lawmakers advanced HB 2364, which would make it a Class 4 felony (presumptive 2½ years in prison) for doctors, pharmacists, manufacturers, or suppliers to mail abortion-inducing drugs into the state. The bill also targets those seeking the medications. Critics question its constitutionality and interstate commerce implications. kjzz.org
Tennessee: Legislation allowing civil lawsuits against out-of-state suppliers of abortion pills passed the House and returned to the Senate. Medication abortion now accounts for roughly 65% of U.S. procedures. newschannel9.com
Wisconsin: The upcoming Supreme Court race between liberal candidate Chris Taylor (former Planned Parenthood law and policy director) and conservative Maria Lazar highlighted stark abortion divides. Taylor supports reproductive rights; Lazar opposes them. The contest is drawing national attention as a potential bellwether. jsonline.com
Montana: Ongoing litigation around HB 937 involves new rules singling out “abortion clinics” for regulations not applied to miscarriage treatment providers. juddocumentservice.mt.gov

Broader commentary continues on threats to mifepristone access, including potential pharmacy dispensing limits and travel requirements in ongoing lawsuits. facebook.com
No major new court rulings or ballot measures emerged this week, but the Guttmacher data and targeted medication-abortion bills dominated coverage. Developments are moving quickly; check primary sources for updates.

U.S. State-Level Actions and Court Rulings
South Dakota enacts stricter anti-abortion measures: On March 20, Gov. Larry Rhoden signed three bills into law at a pregnancy resource center. They make it a felony to dispense or advertise abortion pills (including related items), clarify the legal definition of abortion, and require public schools to show prenatal development videos. The governor called it a strengthening of “pro-life laws.” southdakotasearchlight.com

Indiana court grants permanent religious-freedom exemption to abortion ban: A Marion County judge issued a permanent injunction blocking enforcement of the state’s ban against plaintiffs (and a certified class) when it substantially burdens sincerely held religious beliefs. Overall provision in non-ban states dipped slightly. guttmacher.org
International Developments
UK House of Lords advances abortion decriminalization and pardons: On or around March 19, peers voted 185-145 to approve an amendment decriminalizing abortion in England and Wales (while keeping the 24-week clinical limit for doctors). The measure also paves the way for pardons and record expungement for women previously convicted of abortion-related offenses amid rising prosecutions for self-managed or miscarriage cases. The week brought poignant tributes to a civil-rights giant, urgent papal appeals for peace amid Middle East tensions, a major realignment in global Anglicanism, and ongoing signs of a “Quiet Revival” among younger generations. Reports continued to reference the lingering “Charlie Kirk Effect” from his 2025 assassination, while new data highlighted Pope Leo XIV’s unexpected draw for both Catholics and Protestants.
1. Pope Leo XIV Issues Strong Peace Appeals and War Critique
In his March 15 Angelus address and recent general audiences, Pope Leo XIV lamented “atrocious violence” in the Iran-related conflict, called for an immediate ceasefire (“Let the roar of bombs cease!”), and urged Christian political leaders who initiate wars to “go to confession.” He also expressed concern over political violence broadly and offered prayers for the family of the late activist Charlie Kirk. Vatican observers noted his balanced approach, continuing Francis-era priorities on migrants and ecology while adopting a more traditional style. New Pew and Vatican data this week suggested his papacy has contributed to a measurable uptick in Catholic conversions and interest among Protestants. thedailybeast.com +2
2. Passing of Dr. John M. Perkins at Age 95
On March 13, beloved evangelical leader, author, and civil-rights pioneer Dr. John M. Perkins died peacefully in Jackson, Mississippi. Perkins founded the Christian Community Development Association and spent decades championing racial reconciliation, holistic gospel ministry, and community justice. Tributes from across the evangelical world (including Christianity Today and Religion News Service) underscored his influence on forgiveness after personal experiences of brutality and his model of “relocation, reconciliation, and redistribution.” religionnews.com

Organizers described the gathering as a “kairos moment” representing the majority of the world’s practicing Anglicans. biblegateway.com
4. Signs of “Quiet Revival” and Gen Z Church Growth
The Bible Society and Albert Mohler highlighted record Bible sales in the UK (up over 130% since 2019) and sharp rises in church attendance among 18–24-year-olds the core of the ongoing “Quiet Revival.” In the U.S., King’s Church DC reported ~2,000% growth over seven years (largely Gen Z and millennials), while pastors continued crediting the “Charlie Kirk Effect” for increased Bible reading and first-time church visits among young conservatives. Broader Barna and American Bible Society data noted sustained spiritual interest amid secular trends, though nearly half of American Christians still report not attending services in the past six months. denisonforum.org +1
5. Other Notable Developments

Organizations and media outlets across evangelical, Catholic, and Anglican spheres provided the primary reporting.

Abortion policy continued to evolve at the state level this week, with new restrictions signed into law, high-profile legislative failures, court victories on religious-freedom grounds, and ongoing preparations for 2026 ballot battles. Both pro-life and pro-choice groups remained active, framing developments around fetal protections versus access and health impacts. Here are the major stories:
1. Wyoming Enacts 6-Week “Heartbeat” Ban
Governor Mark Gordon signed HB 126, banning most abortions once a heartbeat is detectable (around six weeks), with exceptions only for medical emergencies. Wyoming becomes the fifth state with such a law. The state’s sole abortion clinic reported turning away roughly a dozen patients in the days following the signing. Pro-life advocates hailed it as a major step forward; reproductive-rights organizations criticized the early cutoff and warned of increased travel burdens for Wyoming women.
2. Tennessee “Abortion-as-Homicide” Bill Fails
A controversial proposal (sponsored by Rep. Jody Barrett and Sen. Mark Pody) that would have classified abortion as homicide—potentially carrying life imprisonment or the death penalty—died in a House subcommittee. No Republican members voted to advance it, surprising some observers and sparking protests outside the capitol. Pro-life hardliners expressed disappointment at the lack of support, while pro-choice groups called the bill’s defeat a “victory for women’s rights and common sense.”
3. Jersey (Channel Islands, UK) Expands Access to 22 Weeks
Lawmakers passed legislation raising the abortion limit from previous restrictions to 22 weeks and reducing other barriers. The new law sets a resident fee of £185 through government healthcare. UK pro-choice campaigners welcomed the move as modernizing outdated rules; local faith-based and pro-life voices voiced concern over the extended gestational window.
4. Indiana Court Strikes Down Restrictions on Religious Grounds
In a landmark ruling, Judge Christina R. Klineman found that Indiana’s abortion laws violate the state’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA)—the first successful challenge of its kind using religious-liberty arguments. The decision could open new legal pathways for clinics and patients. Pro-life organizations warned it may significantly expand access, while religious liberty and reproductive-rights attorneys praised it as precedent-setting.
5. 2026 Ballot-Measure Battles Heat Up
Virginia: A lawsuit was filed to keep a proposed constitutional amendment protecting reproductive rights off the November ballot.
Missouri: A measure to repeal the state’s 2024 abortion protections advanced in signature gathering.
Nevada and several other states remain active fronts, with KFF analysts noting that 2026 could see more voter-driven decisions on both expansion and restriction of access. Both sides are pouring resources into these campaigns.
6. Kansas Protects Crisis Pregnancy Centers
The legislature passed a bill shielding crisis pregnancy centers from certain regulatory requirements and advertising restrictions. Pro-life groups celebrated the measure as safeguarding supportive services for women; opponents argued it limits transparency for those seeking abortion information.
7. UK Catholic Leaders Oppose Decriminalization Push
The Catholic Archbishop of Westminster and other faith leaders intensified campaigning against clauses in the Crime and Policing Bill that would decriminalize abortion up to birth. A key vote is expected soon. This has reignited national debate on late-term procedures and the role of conscience protections.
8. National Trends and Data Notes
Medication (chemical) abortions continue to dominate (now ~63–65% of total procedures per recent tracking). Reports again linked strict state bans to measurable rises in maternal-mortality indicators and interstate travel. Advocacy organizations on both sides released updated statistics and called for federal or state-level action ahead of the mid-year legislative sessions.
The landscape remains highly polarized, with courts, legislatures, and voters all playing pivotal roles. For full details, check state legislative trackers and reports from the Guttmacher Institute and KFF.

Advocacy groups including International Christian Concern (ICC), Open Doors, and Persecution Relief released multiple reports this week documenting fresh incidents of violence, arrests, and systemic discrimination. The global picture remains unchanged: roughly 388 million Christians (about 1 in 7 worldwide) continue to face high or extreme levels of persecution according to the 2026 World Watch List.
1. India – Mob Assault on 28 Christian Families in Chhattisgarh
On March 10 (reported March 16), a mob in Millampalli village, Sukma district, attacked 28 Christian families with wooden rods and sticks. The families had been denied government food rations since November 2025 solely because of their faith; when they complained, a local food inspector allegedly incited the violence and issued threats. Police complaints were filed, but witnesses claim authorities showed bias or inaction.
2. Nigeria – Fulani Militia Attacks Continue in Plateau State
A March 17 ICC report highlighted ongoing raids by Fulani militants and bandits on Christian farming communities in Barkin Ladi, Riyom, and Bokkos areas. Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo of the Church of Christ in Nations publicly stated that repeated appeals for protection, including direct outreach to the U.S. administration, have gone unanswered, leaving Middle Belt Christians exposed despite broader U.S. military operations elsewhere in the country. Churches and homes remain primary targets.
3. Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) – Weekly ADF/ISIS-Linked Violence
ICC’s March 13 briefing detailed near-weekly attacks by the ISIS-affiliated Allied Democratic Forces in eastern provinces. Christians are being murdered, abducted, and displaced, with churches deliberately destroyed as militants seek to impose stricter Islamic rule. The situation has worsened in recent months, with hundreds killed or kidnapped in targeted Christian villages.
4. Cuba – Pastor Arrested for Posting Bible Teaching Online
On March 15, Pastor Rolando Pérez Lora was arrested after uploading a simple Bible teaching video to YouTube. The arrest drew international attention March 16–18, underscoring growing restrictions on online Christian expression in Cuba. Local believers and advocacy groups are calling for his immediate release.
5. Iran & China – Heightened Pressure Amid Conflict and Surveillance
Open Doors issued updated “Dispatches from Iran” (March 17) noting that at least 48 Christians remain imprisoned amid regional chaos, communication blackouts, and economic hardship affecting underground churches. In China, ICC’s new feature “Persecution Has No Borders” detailed intensified domestic surveillance plus overseas harassment of Chinese Christians abroad through “police stations” and digital monitoring.
6. China – “Persecution Has No Borders”
ICC’s March 17 feature emphasized the Chinese Communist Party’s expanding reach: intensified surveillance, church demolitions, and “Sinicization” campaigns inside China, alongside overseas “police stations” harassing Chinese Christians abroad. Long-term prisoners and families of detainees continue to suffer, with authorities tightening controls on online Bible studies and house churches.
7. Iran – Christians Endure War Chaos and Imprisonment
Open Doors issued a March 17 dispatch on the situation inside Iran amid regional conflict. At least 48 Christians remain imprisoned, many in the overcrowded and chaotic Evin Prison, while others are missing. Communication blackouts, economic collapse, and forced conscription have hit underground churches particularly hard. Believers have been actively supporting displaced families, demonstrating remarkable resilience despite the risks of arrest for “apostasy” or “propaganda against the regime.”
8. Broader Regional Warnings
Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) reiterated that escalating violence in the Middle East threatens the very survival of ancient Christian communities. The Vatican and UN statements this week again described anti-Christian persecution as the most widespread form of religious oppression globally.
The Vatican and several UN statements this week reiterated warnings about the scale of anti-Christian violence, especially in conflict zones. European commentators also discussed “polite persecution” , subtle legal and cultural pressures in Western societies, alongside the more violent incidents in the Global South. No major new policy shifts were announced, but advocacy groups continue pressing Western governments for stronger diplomatic action.
These reports emphasize both sudden violence and long-term systemic pressures. Relief organizations are actively providing emergency aid, legal assistance, and documentation. For ongoing monitoring, the primary sources remain ICC (persecution.org), Open Doors, and ACN.
