Mother injured after fighting off coyote that attacked 4-year-old daughter

An Arizona mother is recovering after she was attacked by a coyote that initially went after her 4-year-old daughter, reports AZFamily. Brittany Cardinal of Surprise, Arizona, was left with puncture wounds and lacerations on her face after the attack Sunday afternoon. She told the outlet that, before the attack, she and her daughter were outside because it was windy and her daughter wanted to fly a kite. While outside, Cardinal heard her daughter scream. When she turned around, she saw a coyote nipping at the girl.

“I picked [my daughter] up, and then I started yelling at [the coyote], thinking, of course, it’s going to go away, and then it didn’t,” Cardinal said. Cardinal says she took off her flip-flop and tried to intimidate the coyote with it, but during the struggle, she fell and the coyote lunged and clamped down on her face. “I always hear people say you don’t feel the pain when trauma like that happens, and, I mean, I really didn’t feel any pain.

I just felt like the pressure of it,” Cardinal said. Cardinal and her daughter were eventually able to get away and run home for help. “There was no hesitation at all. I don’t even think I thought about anything. I think you just, like, as a mom, you just try to protect your kid,” she said.

Maryland boy recovering from surgeries after rabid beaver attack at state park

A 13-year-old Maryland boy is reported to be recovering from multiple surgeries and nerve damage after being attacked by a rabid beaver. The teen, Dominick Cebula, was swimming at a popular spot in Cunningham Falls state park in Thurmont, Maryland, on 26 July when a beaver attacked his chest underwater, a relatively rare kind of encounter that more recently has been recurring, according to reporting from local news outlets. Speaking to the news outlet WUSA, Dominick’s father, Jeff Cebula, said: “He grabbed its head and a leg and he tried to get it off of him … At that point, he kind of felt that it was locked onto him.

And then it started shaking its head, kind of like a dog would do.” Jeff Cebula said his son pulled the beaver off his chest but as he backed away, the animal attacked again, biting him on the right hand, WUSA reported. Dominick fought off the beaver before being airlifted to Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore, where he underwent three surgeries on his chest and hands to repair nerve damage. He was also given a rabies post-exposure shot, with his father saying: “It’s not just one shot … It’s multiple shots around each bite site.” WUSA reported that the beaver was later confirmed to have rabies after being caught and euthanized. Multiple other beaver attacks have occurred in Maryland. On 5 August, a rabid beaver allegedly attacked the leg of a 19-year-old fisher at Cunningham Falls state park before being caught and euthanized. And a few days later, a 10-year-old girl endured a beaver attack while canoeing at Maryland’s Seneca Creek state park, CBS News reported.

On 6 August, the Maryland department of natural resources (DNR) announced that it was investigating a potential rabies outbreak in Cunningham Falls state park. Actions in response to that possible outbreak included “dismantling a nearby beaver lodge and establishing daily surveillance at the lake for other beavers using DNR staff and a wildlife damage control cooperator”. The Maryland DNR said its wildlife and heritage service would “institute night-time monitoring at the lake along with daytime surveillance to remove additional beavers, if any are present”. Although beavers are typically non-aggressive and avoid conflict with humans, people should still maintain a minimum safe viewing distance of 25 yards, the Maryland DNR advised.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported that the agency from July through August had received 17% more rabies-related inquiries than during the same period in 2025 – including reports of mass exposure events that involve more than one person. Rabies is a zoonotic viral disease with a near 100% fatality rate once symptoms develop. However, it is preventable when post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is administered appropriately. PEP consists of a series of shots given promptly after potential exposure to the rabies virus Lyssavirus rabies and before symptoms begin. Common symptoms of rabies include anxiety, insomnia, hydrophobia, hypersalivation, fever and headaches.

Bahraich leopard attacks: boy killed, girl injured as floods push animals into villages

A nine-year-old boy was killed and a three-year-old girl was injured in two separate leopard attacks in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district, forest officials said on Tuesday. The officials said cases of wild animals entering populated areas have risen in different parts of the district because of flooding. In one attack, Rajveer, 9, was mauled by a leopard in Anand Nagar village in the Katarniaghat range at around 9 pm on Monday.

In the other, a girl identified as Lado was attacked in Jodwa village under the Nanpara range late on Sunday evening and was later referred to Lucknow for treatment. Divisional Forest Officer of the Katarniaghat Wildlife Division Apoorva Dixit said Rajveer had gone to fetch water from a handpump near the road when the leopard attacked him. “The boy had gone to fetch water from a handpump located alongside the road when the leopard attacked him,” Dixit said. He added that there are sugarcane fields behind the boy’s house and the leopard came out from one of the fields before attacking him.

Rajveer was seriously injured and his family members and villagers were taking him to a community health centre, but he died on the way, Dixit said. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination. He said the forest department has given immediate financial assistance of Rs 10,000 to the boy’s mother and the process for payment of the remaining compensation under the rules is underway. Dixit said leopard pugmarks were found near the spot of the attack. Camera traps are being installed to identify the animal and cages are being set up to capture it. “Due to flooding in the area, wild animals are moving towards higher ground and nearby villages,” he said.

In the second incident, Divisional Forest Officer of the Bahraich Wildlife Division Sundaresha said the injured girl was first taken to Bahraich Medical College and later referred to Lucknow for better treatment. “According to information received on Tuesday, the girl is safe and her condition is out of danger in Lucknow,” he said. Dixit said a continuous operation is under way to safely remove leopards from populated areas.

He said 13 leopards have been rescued since July 21, while 18 leopards have been rescued and shifted to safer locations since the start of the year. The two attacks came as officials continued efforts to track and capture leopards moving into villages in the flood-hit district.

A man was seriously injured after being tossed eight feet into the air by a bull bison in Yellowstone National Park, video shows.  The animal, clearly agitated, appeared to target the man in footage captured Friday at one of the park’s campgrounds. The animal charged toward the visitor, chased him back and forth through a patch of trees, and, ultimately, struck the man with its horns, launching and flipping him over.  The man, 65, suffered serious injuries in the incident and was taken by the park’s emergency responders to a nearby hospital, officials said. Yellowstone has not identified the man publicly. Before the incident, he was seen on video standing beside his grandchild, about 100 yards or so from where the bison was initially lying on the ground, snapping pictures with his phone.  Video of the subsequent encounter, in which the bison stands up and runs over to the man, was filmed by Mike MacLeod, a professional photographer who happened to be at the campground.

MacLeod told “CBS Mornings” that he eventually helped chase the bison away after it had knocked the grandfather over. “I charged the bison, yelling and screaming and kind of been trying to put my camera up in the air,” said MacLeod. “And a bunch of other men joined me, and we successfully hazed the bison off of the, the victim.” Male bison, also called bulls, can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and run at least three times faster than humans, according to the National Park Service, which notes on its website that more people have been injured by bison in Yellowstone than any other animal. Bison “are unpredictable” and may become aggressive when protecting their space, the agency says. Yellowstone visitors are asked to remain at least 25 yards away from wildlife such as bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer moose and coyotes.

They are advised to remain at least 100 yards away from bears, wolves and cougars.  This latest incident involving a Yellowstone bison came just a few weeks after a 12-year-old was hurt by a bison in the park at the end of June. At the time, few details were released about the incident, but officials said an investigation into what happened as underway.  Several bison encounters resulted in injuries to Yellowstone tourists last year. In one of them, a New Jersey man was hurt after being gored by a bison near the park’s famous geyser Old Faithful. In another, a Florida man was gored and injured by a bison in the Lake Village area, where restaurants and hotels are located.
