Authorities seize 29 cats, 1 dog from condemned Brooklyn Park home

Dozens of animals are beginning new lives after being rescued from a Twin Cities home last month. Twenty-nine cats and a dog were seized from the home of a 68-year-old Brooklyn Park woman. Investigators got a search warrant after years of complaints, some dating as far back as 2001.

According to a criminal complaint, the house has been condemned for being unsafe.  The woman living there was taken to the hospital. She has not been arrested, but does face animal mistreatment charges. Many of the pets have already been adopted. There are a few still available at the Animal Humane Society.

CuriOdyssey, a San Mateo animal rescue and zoo is still cleaning up after being battered by the winter storms. The powerful storms also destroyed animals’ habitats, obscured walkways and made it dangerous for staff and visitors.

A beaver that bit a 19-year-old fisherman at a Maryland state park Wednesday morning tested positive for rabies, the Maryland Department of Health confirmed. The man was bitten on the leg while visiting the William Houck Area of Cunningham Falls State Park at Hunting Creek Lake near Thurmont, Maryland. It was the second beaver to test positive for rabies at Cunningham Falls State Park in the past two weeks. A 13-year-old was bitten by another rabid beaver at the park on July 26. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) responded around 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday after a beaver reportedly attacked a man while he was fishing at the lake. He was taken to Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown for treatment. The beaver was captured and euthanized and was then sent to the health department for rabies testing. The Houck Day Use Area at Cunningham Falls State Park, the adjacent boat ramp, and Big Hunting Creek upstream of the lake were closed while wildlife officials investigate a possible rabies outbreak among the local beaver population.

The closures prohibit swimming, fishing, boating, and other water access until officials determine the area is safe for visitors. Other areas of the park, including the campground, remain open. Officials say this could take several days. On Jul 26,  a 13-year-old boy was bitten by a rabid beaver at Cunningham Falls State Park’s William Houck area near the North Beach of the lake.  The DNR said that officers searched for additional signs of rabid beavers in the area following the first beaver attack. A beaver lodge was dismantled, and daily surveillance was established at the lake for other beavers. People who have been bitten or scratched by a beaver near Cunningham Falls State Park are encouraged to call their health care provider or the Frederick County Health Department’s Community Health Services Office at 301-600-3342.  “Rabies can infect mammals through a bite or a scratch. Once an animal or person starts showing symptoms, it is almost always fatal unless treatment is given,” said Barry Glotfelty, Director for FCHD’s Environmental Health Services.

Meet Casper, the Single Owl Mom Who Has Raised More Than 500 Orphaned Babies

For the past 26 years, one remarkable owl in British Columbia has been quietly helping raise hundreds of orphaned babies and giving them a second chance at life in the wild. Casper / OWL Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society Casper, a great horned owl living at the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society, has become something of a legend at the wildlife rehabilitation center after fostering more than 500 rescued owlets since 1999. And according to staff, she’s still going strong. Casper first arrived at the center after suffering injuries that made it impossible for her to survive on her own in the wild. While she could no longer be released, the team soon discovered she had a very special gift: she was a natural foster mom.

Since then, she has helped teach generations of rescued baby owls the skills they need before returning to nature. Right now, she’s caring for four more owlets. Casper and her foster babies / OWL Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society Staff say Casper plays a critical role in preparing the babies for survival. The young owls learn by watching her fly, hunt, and react to the world around them. “They look up to her, they follow her, they mimic her,” said Rob Hope, manager of the rehabilitation society, in an interview with CBC.

Man Carries Stranded Moose Calf Across Busy Highway to Reunite It With Its Mother

The drama unfolded near Prince George, BC, when a mother moose attempted to lead her newborn twin calves across Highway 97. While the mother successfully made it to the other side, her two calves became trapped in the highway’s center median, unable to climb over the concrete barrier separating the lanes. Motorist Sandie, who witnessed the scene and recorded video, said traffic began slowing as drivers noticed the stranded animals. The worried mother remained nearby, keeping a watchful eye on her babies from the opposite side of the highway. One of the calves eventually managed to scramble over the barrier on its own and reunite with its mother.

The second calf, however, remained stuck. As more time passed and traffic continued to back up, one bystander decided something had to be done. Duane Hogberg carefully approached the frightened newborn, lifted it over the concrete median, and then carried the tiny moose across to safety while its mother waited nearby. The touching moment was captured on video, showing the calf being reunited with its family after the rescue. Thanks to Hogberg’s actions, the young moose was able to safely reach its mother, bringing a stressful situation to a happy ending and earning praise from viewers who called the rescue both brave and compassionate.

“Bordeaux” the sea lion rescued from Google campus in Sunnyvale released back into ocean

While Irving the sea lion stole the spotlight earlier this month after he was found wandering the streets of San Francisco’s Sunset District, he wasn’t the only pup on the loose. Bordaeux was found on the Google campus in Sunnyvale last month and was just released into his natural habitat. This sea lion pup was found on the Google Campus in Sunnyvale, located on Bordeaux Drive. Hence his name, Bordeaux. Officers Joseph Bowles and Community Service Officer Robert Kerr were instrumental in guiding Bordeaux to safety after getting the initial call of a sea lion on the loose.

“I must say it was interesting listening to the dispatch because he was very vocal in the background,” Officer Bowles said. “As we were going to the scene, you can hear the officer putting out radio traffic saying they’re building a barrier for the sea lion to stay inside of and all you can hear is him talking.” This little guy was eventually picked up by the Marine Mammal Center, where he was treated for malnutrition, but getting him there was a challenge. “Our hope was that Bordeaux would stay in place in our little enclosure until the Marine Mammal Center could get there to safely take him into their protection,” Officer Bowles said. “Unfortunately, he had other plans and climbed over the structure we had built around him and he escaped the area.”

After a period of intensive care and quarantine, along with some abnormal behavior that was later resolved, the sea lion began eating well with pen mates in a rehabilitation pool, the center said. Bordeaux was released back into the wild on Wednesday at Chimney Rock in Point Reyes National Seashore, according to the center. Young seals and sea lions that are separated from their mother too early face challenges in finding food due to underdeveloped foraging skills, which also can make them susceptible to additional health issues, the center said. “We’re thankful to the Sunnyvale DPS for their partnership in the rescue of Bordeaux and helping give him a second chance,” said Marine Mammal Center associate veterinarian Dr. Dane Whitaker in a prepared statement. “After receiving over a month of specialized rehabilitative care and responding well to treatment, we’re excited that Bordeaux is back in his ocean home!” The Marine Mammal Center reminded the public that if they see a marine mammal in distress to not intervene, keep a distance of at least 150 feet, and call the center’s at 415-289-SEAL (7325)
