Ford recalls nearly 149,000 Mustang vehicles over potential power issue

Ford Motor Company is recalling 148,663 Mustang vehicles due to an issue that could cause the cars to lose power or disrupt other functions, such as the headlights, increasing the risk of a crash. Federal safety regulators said in a recall notice that an issue with the electrical wiring system in certain Mustang vehicles could lead to a “loss of drive power, or a loss of function in the windshield washing system, headlights, air conditioning, or engine cooling fan.”

The recall includes 2024 to 2026 Ford Mustang vehicles that were produced between Sept. 7, 2022 and June 9, 2026.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said 1% of the vehicles are expected to have the defect. Letters informing owners of the issue are slated to go out between Aug. 31 and Sept. 4. Additional letters will be mailed once a remedy is available, around March 2027. Drivers can bring affected Mustang vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have their engine compartment wiring harness ground terminals replaced free of charge, the recall notice says. NHTSA’s recall number is 26V547. Ford’s recall number is 26C40.

Ford is issuing a safety recall for some 144,oo0 F-150s in Canada, the company said Friday, due to an issue with the vehicles’ gearshift that can impact the drivers’ control of the vehicle. The safety issue impacts some vehicles with six-speed automatic transmissions made between 2015 and 2017. In the U.S., almost 1.4 million vehicles are affected, including some 2014 model years as well. In some of the trucks, deteriorated electrical connections in the internal transmission lead frame can cause a signal issue from a transmission sensor, according to the company. “This may lead to an unexpected downshift into a lower gear while the vehicle is in motion,” a Ford spokesperson told CBC News in an emailed statement.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s safety recall report said the issue may cause an abrupt reduction in wheel speed for a short period of time, which in some situations could cause the rear tires to slide until the vehicle speed slows. The automaker is aware of two injuries and one accident possibly related to the issue, according to The Associated Press. Ford says dealers can update the vehicles’ Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software, which should fix the issue. Alternatively, if an affected vehicle previously displayed “specific diagnostic trouble codes” related to that sensor, Ford says it will replace the transmission lead frame for free. F-150 drivers can determine if their vehicle is impacted by entering their Vehicle Identification Number online on Ford’s recall webpage.

Ford recalls 1.4 million F-150 pickup trucks

Ford is recalling almost 1.4 million of its F-150 pickup trucks in the U.S. because of a gearshift issue that may lead to the loss of control of vehicles and increasing the risk of a crash. The automaker is aware of two injuries and one accident possibly related to the issue. Advertisement The recall includes F-150 light trucks with a six-speed automatic transmission that were produced between March 12, 2014 an Aug. 18, 2017. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s safety recall report says that some of the pickup trucks may experience an intermittent selection signal of the transmission range sensor to the powertrain control module, which may lead to a temporary, unintended downshift into second gear.

This may cause an abrupt reduction in wheel speed for a short period of time, which in some situations could cause the rear tires to slide until the vehicle speed slows. Ford is aware of 444 warranty claims and 105 customer service reports that could be linked to the issue as of early this month. Vehicle owners will be notified about the recall by mail and instructed to bring their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have their powertrain control module calibration updated at no cost.

Ford Motor Co. is recalling 422,613 vehicles because the windshield wipers might fail, according to a notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The agency said the failure could reduce the driver’s visibility and increase the risk of a crash. The recall affects Lincoln Navigator and Expedition vehicles, as well as some of Ford’s F-Series trucks. 

Vehicles included in recall:

  • 2021-2023 Lincoln Navigator vehicles
  • 2021-2023 Expedition vehicles
  • 2022-2023 F-250 SD vehicles
  • 2022-2023 F-350 SD vehicles
  • 2022-2023 F-450 SD vehicles
  • 2022-2023 F-550 SD vehicles
  • 2022-2023 F-600 vehicles

Ford plans to send a letter to affected owners on April 13, 2026, to notify them of the windshield wiper issue and corresponding safety risks. Owners can take their vehicles to a dealership to have the wipers replaced free of charge, NHTSA said. Ford’s recall number is 26S24.
