France confirms data breach at government agency that manages citizens’ IDs The French government agency that handles the issuing and management of citizens’ identity documents, including national IDs, passports, and immigration documents, confirmed Wednesday that it experienced a data breach. In an announcement, the Agence Nationale des Titres Sécurisés (ANTS) said the data stolen in the breach could include full names, dates and places of birth, mailing and email addresses, and phone numbers on an undisclosed number of citizens.

ANTS said the investigation to determine how the breach happened and its impact is ongoing, and people whose data was affected are being notified.  ANTS, which said it detected the attack on April 15, did not specify how many people were affected by the breach. But some reporting suggests millions may have had some of their personal information stolen.  According to Bleeping Computer, a hacker has advertised the stolen data on a hacking forum, claiming to have a database with 19 million records. The hacker’s forum post referenced the same kind of stolen information as mentioned in ANTS’ announcement, and was published before ANTS publicly disclosed the breach on April 20.

A new report by the FBI finds elder fraud has reached a record high, including in Colorado. Nationwide, more than 200,000 Americans over age 60 reported fraud last year, with losses of nearly $8 billion — a 37% increase over 2024. In Colorado, more than 3,000 seniors filed complaints, with losses of nearly $75 million. Debbie Fox is among them. In October of 2023, she met a man online and began video chatting with him. She knew people weren’t always who they pretended to be, so she did her homework.

She found his personal and professional websites, asked to see his passport, and verified his business registration. His story appeared to check out, but she soon learned it was all an elaborate ruse to steal $48,000. “With a signed loan agreement and a bank letter of loan guarantee in hand I withdrew money from my retirement account, transferred it to my U.S. Bank account and wired it as directed to the bank account of a registered a business in Florida,” Fox said. She realized too late it was a scam.

Scammers now use fake recall texts to steal your money

It’s one fast-moving text that some consumers could easily jump on. Who wouldn’t get a little worked up if they suddenly spotted a text that claimed to be from Amazon or another retailer and implied that a baby’s sleepsuit they just bought is being recalled for quality and safety issues? Scammers — who have flooded our phones with fake texts about parking tickets, tolls and job opportunities — now are texting us about recall notices. All you have to do is click on this link for recall instructions and ask for a refund. Except that’s exactly the wrong thing to do. Typically, the message doesn’t mention that sleepsuit or sweater you just bought. But it might give an order number or other information to make the text seem pretty believable. If you didn’t get a text yet about a product recall, just wait. The scam recall text is likely to be a hot one in 2026, according to alerts from consumer watchdogs who have spotted an uptick of complaints about these scams already.
