The Socialist Rise; Takeaways from Colorado primaries: Melat Kiros, a democratic socialist, ousts another House incumbent

Democratic socialists struck another blow against the Democratic establishment on Tuesday in Colorado, where CNN’s Decision Desk projects that 29-year-old Melat Kiros will defeat incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette, who was first elected before Kiros was born, in a primary. Kiros was the third progressive challenger to defeat a sitting House member in eight days, after two more won last week in New York. And, after successes in mayor’s races, congressional primaries and more on both coasts, Kiros’ win showed the expanding geographical reach of the left-wing insurgency seeking to remake the Democratic Party ahead of this year’s midterm elections — and as the 2028 presidential primary looms increasingly large. “We are winning from coast to coast, from every level of office. We are taking back our party and our country,” Kiros told supporters at her election night party.

The 1st District primary was the most surprising outcome on a day in which Colorado Democratic voters settled a series of battles over who will lead the party as term-limited Gov. Jared Polis departs. Those voters opted to keep their two Democratic senators in the Senate. That was good news for Sen. John Hickenlooper, who fended off a challenge from the left. But it was bad news for Sen. Michael Bennet, who lost the party’s primary for governor to state attorney general Phil Weiser. Weiser campaigned on confronting President Donald Trump more aggressively than Polis, who was recently rebuked by his own party for deciding to grant clemency to election denier Tina Peters. Democratic voters also chose their nominee in the battleground 8th District race, projected to pick a 31-year-old state lawmaker to take on a freshman Republican in what’s expected to be one of the nation’s most competitive races in the battle for House control. Here are the key takeaways from Colorado’s primaries.

Progressives oust another House veteran Kiros, who was endorsed by Sen. Bernie Sanders, rode the wave of anti-establishment momentum that drove a series of upset victories for the party’s left-wing in New York earlier this month. The contest exposed familiar fault lines, the candidates clashing over resistance to the Trump administration, economic policies, and Kiros’ vocal criticism of US relations with Israel. DeGette leaned on her long record, arguing at a debate this month that “now is not the time to gamble and send somebody with no experience to Washington.” The 15-term congresswoman was also backed by more than $1 million in outside spending, with ads criticizing Kiros as “extreme” and accusing her of making comments “laced with antisemitism.” Kiros, in turn, cast DeGette as part of a failed establishment. “The reality is Democrats have the worst approval rating we’ve had in decades, because we’ve failed to actually do anything for working people,” she argued at this month’s debate.

Kiros was fired from her law firm in 2023 after she published an open letter arguing that student protesters’ calls for the elimination of Israel should not be conflated with antisemitism. She faced scrutiny on the campaign trail after she refused to describe the firebombing of a group of protesters in Boulder calling for the release of Israeli hostages last year as antisemitic. Investigators previously said the perpetrator told police he was driven by a desire “to kill all Zionist people.” “I don’t know what was in the heart of the perpetrator,” she told 9News. “All I know is that he went and attacked innocent people because of what they might have believed.” Over the weekend, Darializa Avila Chevalier, the democratic socialist who defeated the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus in New York last week despite scrutiny over controversial posts, encouraged Denver residents to vote for Kiros.

Both women are backed by the anti-corporate PAC group Justice Democrats and Kiros told CNN in an interview that she has spoken with Avila Chevalier. The young democratic socialist is likely to join a slate of other upstart progressives in Congress next year, advancing as a favorite in the general election for the Denver-area district. A rising democratic socialist movement It’s too early to know how the progressive victories in 2026 primaries will play out long-term — including how the general electorate will react to the Democratic shift left in November and how progressives will shape the 2028 presidential race. On Tuesday night, though, democratic socialists were celebrating. Ahead of Kiros’ remarks, the crowd chanted “DSA, DSA” — the acronym for Democratic Socialists of America. Attendees included Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, who interviewed Kiros during the campaign, and Pennsylvania state Rep. Chris Rabb, a DSA-aligned candidate who won a House primary in Philadelphia this spring.

“They’re afraid of us, and you should be, because we’re not coming here to play,” Rabb told the audience before introducing Kiros. Kiros thanked Sanders, and at one point was handed a cardboard cutout of the progressive icon in a meme-worthy moment, sitting in a chair wearing mittens and a mask. During her remarks, which were often interrupted by celebratory airhorn blasts, she said her victory “sent a clear message: We will not wait.” Then, she laid out a series of democratic socialists’ top political priorities. “We will not wait to take the fight to Donald Trump and the oligarchy. We will not wait to abolish ICE and pass Medicare for All. We will not wait to put an end to the politics of the past, to get big money out of our politics and to address corporate PACs and AIPAC. And no, we will not wait to end the genocide in Palestine,” she said. Her victory, she concluded, is much bigger than this moment. “This is a movement, and we are just getting started.” A nominee for governor who promises to take on Trump The Democratic primary for Colorado governor was the latest evidence that Democratic voters are deeply dissatisfied with their party’s representation in Washington and eager for more confrontation with Trump.

Voters chose Weiser over Bennet — even though the senator had long been viewed as the frontrunner to succeed the term-limited Polis. Bennet campaigned on what he said were bolder plans to take on climate change and expand health care access, including creating a state-run public health insurance option. But Weiser tied Bennet to Washington and noted that Bennet will retain his Senate seat. He said in a debate that what’s best for Colorado could fit on a bumper sticker: “Phil Weiser for governor, Michael Bennet for Senate.” He also promised more confrontation with Trump and touted the dozens of lawsuits he has filed against the Trump administration. The Trump administration’s actions targeting Colorado — including moving the Space Command headquarters, attempting to disassemble the National Center for Atmospheric Research, denying disaster declaration requests, vetoing funding for a drinking water pipeline and more — left many Democrats hungry for a stronger response.

Weiser’s ads highlighted his efforts to stand up to what he calls a “lawless, bullying administration,” while portraying Bennet as supported by corporate honchos. Weiser will be the clear favorite in November in a state Democrats won by double digits in the last two presidential elections. Republicans are choosing their nominee from a group that includes ministry leader Victor Marx, state Rep. Scott Bottoms and state Sen. Barb Kirkmeyer. Hickenlooper fends off challenge from the left Hickenlooper will win the Democratic primary for US Senate in Colorado, CNN’s Decision Desk projects, despite a spirited challenge from his left. He defeated state Sen. Julie Gonzales, a 43-year-old progressive challenger, in a contest that served as proxy for the broader debate over the Democratic Party’s future.

The former Denver mayor and two-term governor leveraged decades of experience in Colorado politics to blunt the momentum of the anti-establishment left wing, touting his coalition-building approach while affirming his opposition to the Trump administration. Gonzales, meanwhile, aligned herself with calls for generational change within the party, arguing that the 74-year-old incumbent’s “go-along-to-get-along, poll-tested incrementalist politics have not made Coloradans’ lives better,” while criticizing Hickenlooper for skipping debates and candidate forums. And while Gonzales was endorsed by the national progressive group Indivisible and the state AFL-CIO, Hickenlooper’s financial advantage – outraising Gonzales several times over – and longstanding reputation was enough to overcome a spirited challenge. Hickenlooper now advances to the general election as the favorite to retain his seat in solidly Democratic Colorado. Democrats choose nominee in battleground House district Colorado’s 8th District, where first-term Republican Rep. Gabe Evans won by less than a percentage point in 2024, is expected to be among the top Democratic targets this fall.

State Rep. Manny Rutinel will win the Democratic nomination to face Evans, CNN’s Decision Desk projects, defeating former state Rep. Shannon Bird. Rutinel is a relative newcomer to Colorado, first arriving in 2020 to work on Hickenlooper’s Senate campaign and permanently moving there two years later after graduating from Yale Law School. In 2023, he was selected to fill a state House vacancy after the former officeholder was appointed to the state Senate. Bird, 57, was viewed as among the more moderate Democrats in the legislature. The former Westminster City Council member and attorney was first elected in 2018 and resigned early this year to run for Congress. The 8th District, which stretches from Denver’s northern suburbs to Greeley, includes a large share of Latino voters. On the campaign trail, Rutinel emphasized his roots as the son of an immigrant single mother from the Dominican Republic, and the contest was marked by clashes over immigration policy and legislative records.

Explosive Diarrhea Parasite Outbreak Hits 20 States: Full List of Affected Areas

anonymous man hanging toilet paper in bathroom

A parasite that causes explosive, watery diarrhea has sickened 145 people across 20 US states, prompting an ongoing investigation by federal and state health officials into the source of the outbreak. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the cases were reported between May and June 16 and involve patients ranging in age from 5 to 86 years old. So far, 20 people have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported. Breaking It Down What is Shigella and how does it spread? What are the symptoms of Shigella infection? How are health authorities responding to the outbreak in Wayanad? Created with AI. Health officials believe the illnesses are linked to contaminated food because none of the patients reported recent international travel.

However, investigators have not yet identified the exact source. The parasite, Cyclospora cayetanensis, causes cyclosporiasis, a foodborne illness that commonly leads to explosive, watery diarrhea, severe stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. Symptoms usually appear about a week after infection and mainly affect the intestines, although some infected people may not develop symptoms. The CDC said local, state, and federal public health authorities are investigating several clusters of cases spanning multiple states. Officials also noted that the true number of infections may be higher because some cases may not have been diagnosed.

List of 20 States Affected By The Outbreak The CDC has reported cases in the following states and Washington, DC:

  • New York
  • New Jersey
  • Connecticut
  • Pennsylvania
  • Massachusetts
  • Rhode Island
  • Delaware
  • Maryland
  • Virginia
  • North Carolina
  • Ohio
  • Tennessee
  • Wisconsin
  • Illinois
  • Georgia
  • Florida
  • Texas
  • Louisiana
  • Colorado
  • Alaska
  • Washington DC

Among the affected areas, New York has reported the highest number of cases, with between 31 and 80 infections, followed by Texas and Illinois, which have each recorded between 11 and 30 cases. While cyclosporiasis can resolve on its own, symptoms may last for a month or longer if left untreated, increasing the risk of dehydration. The CDC says the infection is typically treated with the antibiotic trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, also sold under the brand names Bactrim, Septra and Cotrim. The agency also recommends following safe food handling and storage practices. Previous US outbreaks have been linked to imported fresh produce, including cilantro, raspberries, sweet peas, mesclun lettuce and basil.

Utah wildfires: Three firefighters killed in Colorado as wildfires rage across the Southwest

Five firefighters standing on a rocky ridge looking at a large forest wildfire at night

Three firefighters have died battling a fast-moving blaze along the Colorado-Utah border, officials said, as dozens of infernos rage across the Southwest, with Utah imposing sweeping restrictions on Fourth of July fireworks ahead of the nation’s 250th Independence Day. The National Weather Service has issued the highest possible fire weather risk, warning that dry air and windy gusts pose an “extremely critical” risk of fire conditions over the Four Corners region this weekend. The three firefighters died while battling the fast-growing Snyder Mesa Fire, which has burned more than 28,000 acres along the Utah-Colorado border, the US Wildland Fire Service said late Saturday.

Two others were injured and transported to hospital, the service said. Colorado Gov. Jared Polis declared a disaster emergency Saturday in Mesa County in reaction to the blaze, which he said had crossed into Colorado from Utah, and authorized the state’s National Guard to support response efforts. Utah’s governor announced last week firework restrictions for Fourth of July, saying a historic drought, hundreds of wildfires and unprecedented fire behavior have stretched Utah’s firefighting resources to the brink. “Utahns love celebrating the Fourth of July with family, friends and fireworks. I do too. But this year is different,” Cox said. “We are seeing fire behavior that even our most experienced firefighters say they’ve never witnessed before.”

The fire threat is so severe that the National Weather Service office in Salt Lake City issued its first-ever “particularly dangerous situation” red flag warning, which covers central and southern Utah and includes the Cottonwood Fire, the state’s largest active blaze. “This is a temporary measure for an extraordinary year,” Cox said of the fireworks ban. “It protects lives and homes while allowing local leaders, working alongside their fire officials, to identify areas where fireworks can be used safely.” In some municipalities, local leaders working alongside fire officials will designate approved areas where fireworks can still be used under safer conditions. The Cottonwood Fire, burning through the Fishlake National Forest east of Beaver, Utah, has grown to more than 92,000 acres as of Saturday morning, an area bigger than Salt Lake City, in just a few days and remains 0% contained as of Saturday night.

Evacuations are in place for the fire, which state and local officials believe is likely Utah’s most destructive and costly wildfire on record. Its cause is still under investigation. A total of 1,066 personnel are battling the Cottonwood Fire, where crews have been warned to stay vigilant of the dangerous and unpredictable fire behavior. “We always have safety first out there, and as soon as we see things or we start getting feelings, we’ve told the guys they don’t like it, disengage, get to a safe place,” Alyssa Mason, a spokesperson for the fire’s emergency management team, told CNN affiliate KSL. State officials also warned that anyone whose illegal actions ignite a wildfire could face steep criminal charges and substantial civil liability for the damage caused. Beloved cabins and lifelong memories reduced to ashes As officials continue assessing the ongoing damage, the full toll of the Cottonwood Fire remains unknown.

But across the Beaver Mountain community, residents are already grieving the loss of cherished cabins and family retreats that held generations of memories. For Evan Stapley, Beaver Mountain was more than a weekend getaway — it was woven into his family’s history. “To me, nothing’s more beautiful than Beaver Mountain in the fall,” Stapley told CNN affiliate KSL. “The aspen yellow, and you get the reds in there and all the greens. There is nothing more beautiful in the world.” Now, the cabin where those memories were made has been reduced to ash. Stapley said he learned it had burned in the Cottonwood Fire after a friend sent him video of the spot where it once stood. “I saw that and went, ‘That’s just unbelievable,’” he told KSL. “The fire must have moved so fast and twirled around in there and just took it … I cried,” he added.

“I’ve got too many memories, too many memories of that place.” The fire also dealt a devastating blow to Eagle Point Ski Resort, where several buildings were damaged or destroyed. In a Facebook post, owner Shane Gadbaw said the resort will remain closed as it recovers from what he called a catastrophe. “We are thankful that to our knowledge, there have been no human casualties from the fire,” Gadbaw said in a Facebook post. Residents gathered Friday in Piute County as the Cottonwood Fire pushed closer, with flames visible in the distance and smoke settling across the valley, to hear updates and discuss emergency response plans, CNN affiliate KSTU reported. During the meeting, Nick Schenk of Great Basin Team 5, one of the first responders who fought the blaze Monday, delivered an emotional account of the battle against the fire. “We did everything we absolutely could.

We called for every bit of help we could find. And about all we could do was get people out of the way of it,” Schenk told KSTU. Photos shared by the resort Thursday showed a handful of lodges still standing amid a landscape of blackened trees. Farther north, the Iron Fire near Eureka, Utah, has burned more than 40,000 acres after forcing evacuations earlier this week. Nearby, the Cherry Fire, sparked by lightning Friday morning, has already grown to more than 30,000 acres. Another blaze, the Wild Goose Fire, ignited near Holden on Friday, adding to a growing list of active wildfires across Utah. State fire officials estimated by Saturday evening it had burned over 10,000 acres as crews worked to assess and contain its spread.

Tularemia detected in Northern Colorado after dead rabbit discovered in Berthoud

photo of two rabbits in a forest

Tularemia has been detected in Northern Colorado after a dead rabbit was discovered in a Berthoud neighborhood. According to Larimer County Department of Health and Environment, the bacteria was identified in a dead rabbit.  Health officials said that because tularemia is natural to Larimer County, it is likely present in other areas throughout the county.  They are reminding residents and visitors that a few simple precautions can help prevent illness from rabbits, ticks and other wildlife while enjoying the outdoors.  According to LCDHE, tularemia is a rare but potentially serious bacterial infection found in local wildlife, especially rabbits and rodents.

Health officials said it can spread to humans through bites from infected ticks and deer flies, direct contact with sick or dead animals and contaminated soil, water and vegetation.  Common symptoms, according to LCDHE, include fever, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, and skin ulcers. When diagnosed early, tularemia can be effectively treated with antibiotics. In Larimer County, there have been seven human cases of tularemia since 2020. In Larimer County, there have been 7 human cases of tularemia since 2020.  “Because tularemia is present in Larimer County, it’s important to take steps to avoid infection,” said Dr. Paul Mayer, the health department’s Medical Officer, in a statement.

He recommends that residents and visitors always “use effective insect repellent, check skin for ticks after being outdoors, and keep children and pets away from wild animals, including rabbits and squirrels.” Additional Information from LCDHE: To help reduce your risk of tularemia,

LCDHE recommends the following precautions when spending time outdoors:

  • Wear gloves while gardening and wash hands before eating or touching your face
  • Use an EPA-registered insect repellent effective against ticks and biting flies (such as DEET or picaridin)
  • Wear a dust mask when mowing, using a leaf blower, or digging in soil
  • Wear shoes outdoors, especially in areas where dead animals may have been
  • Use protective gloves to remove dead rabbits or rodents from your property

Denver Public Schools will implement bell-to-bell cellphone ban

photo of people using their smartphones

Denver’s school board unanimously passed a policy that will require students’ personal electronic devices to be turned off and put away while at school. This includes cellphones, smart watches, laptops, tablets and even wireless earbuds.  “It was a thoughtful community recommendation, not a top-down directive,” said School Board Director Marlene De La Rosa. “Number two was focused on educational outcomes, not punishment, as we really want to see this as a positive. It is focused on sustained attention, reducing distraction, [and] limiting social media harms during the school day.”

CBS In a survey of more than 7,000 DPS parents, teachers, students, and other community members, more than 60% were in favor of a bell-to-bell ban. That includes about ¾ of all staff surveyed. However, only 2% of students agreed. “I want to be really clear that this isn’t punishment, you know, that the adults, the leadership, the district wants what’s best for the kids, wants what’s best for their success,” said DPS parent, Jamie Chesser. Chesser has been a part of the community engagement process. “This is, in my opinion, the way that we need to go for children’s success, mental health focus, and also for the teachers,” Chesser added.

Young child rescued, in critical condition after falling into creek in Boulder County

emergency response team conducting outdoor simulation

Rescue crews in Boulder County found a child who was swept away in St. Vrain Creek on Tuesday after searching for over an hour. Multiple agencies joined in the search for the 4-year-old boy, who went missing around 3 miles northwest of Lyons just before 5:30 p.m. The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office said the boy was with a relative when he fell into the water. The family member was initially unable to call for help due to a lack of cellphone service in the area. The child’s relative managed to find a place with service ten minutes later and called 911.

The BCSO provided an update later Tuesday night, stating the boy was one of two children who were initially playing in the water. One child escaped, but the 4-year-old could not get out of the creek on his own and was swept away. Rescue crews, including divers and drone operators, searched for the child for an hour and a half. He was found in critical condition around 7:07 p.m. and was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Marmot climbs into truck’s frame in Colorado, rides from Lake City to Broomfield

close up of a marmot

A marmot took an unexpected trip across Colorado this week after it climbed into the frame of a truck. The marmot wound up traveling more than 250 miles, from Lake City in Hinsdale County to Broomfield in the northwestern part of the Denver metro area. City of Broomfield Officials from the Broomfield Police Department described the animal as friendly, but said it took several hours of effort to get the animal out of the truck. Officers from their animal services division finally used a catch pole to get the animal out. The marmot was then transported to the Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation Center where it will be assessed before being returned home. “Poor guy, one minute he’s in Lake City and the next he’s in Broomfield!” Broomfield police wrote in a post on Facebook.

Colorado tourism railroad postpones summer operations due to drought conditions, wildfire concern

vintage steam locomotive on railway track outdoors

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad (C&TS), originally scheduled to open its 2026 season on Saturday, announced earlier this week that it will postpone operations due to severe drought conditions and elevated wildfire danger across the region. C&TS management held an emergency meeting and voted to postpone opening until June 9. Management will conduct a review on June 2 to determine if condition are safe to operate and keep that date for opening, the rail road stated in a press release.  “With deep respect for the land, forests, and communities where we operate, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad Commission made the difficult decision to delay the start of our season,” said Mark Graybill, Colorado Commissioner of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad Commission.

Guests holding reservations for affected departures have been contacted directly by the railroad’s reservations department. Passengers were offered the choice of either a full refund or rebooking on a later departure date.   Railroad officials emphasized that the decision was made proactively in response to evolving regional conditions. “This was a difficult decision because the railroad is vital to the Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico economies and our mission is to preserve and share this important part of history,” said Eric Mason, CEO of the C&TS. “We are committed to operating responsibly and safely within the remarkable landscape we have called home since 1880. We thank our passengers for their understanding and hope they will visit us when we resume normal operations.” Another railroad tour, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, began operations in early May on schedule.

The D&SNGR settled a federal lawsuit four years ago and agreed to pay $20 million in damages following the 416 Fire near Durango in 2018. While an investigation found the fire started near the railroad’s tracks, the railroad denied and continues to deny that it caused the 416 Fire.

Colorado’s A-Basin Ski Area extends season after recent snowfall

ski lift at winter park resort

Thanks to the significant snowfall in Colorado’s mountains this week, Arapahoe Basin has announced it will be extending the ski season. The snowstorm totals from Tuesday and Wednesday ranged from a few inches in some places to over two feet in others. A-Basin said it received 9 inches of snow during the storm. In a post on social media, the ski area said it will be closed from May 11-14, but it will reopen again from May 15-17. “WHY? HOW?? Recent storms and our high elevation, in conjunction with our teams’ hard work all season long, are keeping us running for yet another weekend. This is what The Basin does; we read our mountain and its needs, and we adjust our operation accordingly,” the ski area said.

Denver Public Schools considering banning cellphones during school hours

group of people sitting beside a fence

Denver Public Schools is now considering a bell-to-bell policy, which would mean students wouldn’t be able to use their cellphones, not even during passing periods and lunch. It would also include other personal devices such as laptops, smartwatches, and wireless earbuds to prevent students from working around the phone ban. All Colorado school districts must establish their own cellphone policies according to law.

“We all just realized, once you know better, you need to do better,” said Sarah Almy Moore, a DPS parent and a member of the Communication Devices Advisory Committee tasked with creating the cellphone policy recommendation for the school board. “We heard from a lot of different people,” she said. The committee spoke with and heard from hundreds of students, teachers, parents, and even members of the school safety team when doing the research. “There’s 17 states that have implemented a bell-to-bell ban on devices,” Almy Moore said. “So this is not like a groundbreaking thing.

Man gets life in prison for firebombing pro-Israel demonstrators in Colorado

lighted match stick

A man was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after pleading guilty on Thursday to killing one person and injuring a dozen others in a 2025 firebombing attack on a demonstration in Boulder, Colorado, in support of Israeli hostages in Gaza. Mohamed Sabry Soliman looked down at a desk throughout the sentencing at the Boulder district court. He has meanwhile pleaded not guilty to federal hate crime charges for the attack last June. Prosecutors are weighing whether to seek the death penalty in the federal case, according to his attorneys.

An 82-year-old woman who was injured in the attack later died. A dozen others also were injured. Soliman is an Egyptian national who federal authorities say was living in the US without documentation. Investigators allege he planned the attack for a year and was driven by a desire “to kill all Zionist people”. Speaking to the court through an interpreter for nearly a half an hour, Soliman offered apologies to the victims and condolences for Diamond’s death. “There are no words that can express my sadness for her passing,” Soliman said. He said he wasn’t asking for leniency at sentencing for his convictions in state court and wanted prosecutors pressing federal hate crime charges against him to seek the death penalty. “If I went back, I would not have done this as this is not according to the teaching of Islam,” Soliman said. “What I did came out of myself and only myself.” In a statement read earlier in court by a prosecutor, Diamond’s sons asked that Soliman not be allowed to see his family again “since he is responsible for our mother never seeing her family again”.

Andrew and Ethan Diamond said their mother suffered “indescribable pain” for more than three weeks before her death. “In those weeks, we learned the full meaning of the expressions ‘living hell’ and ‘fate worse than death’,” Diamond’s sons said in the statement. Tara Winer, Boulder’s mayor pro tem, said the attack was horrific and victims included close friends. Soliman had been living with his family in a two-bedroom apartment in Colorado Springs – about 97 miles (156km) away – at the time of the attack.

Heavy snow falls in Denver; see how much moisture this Colorado snowstorm will bring

snow covered tree and ground

Rain in the Denver metro area changed over to heavy snow early Tuesday evening. The temperature at 6 p.m. in Denver was 34 degrees, so the snow so far hasn’t been sticking on roads but that will change overnight as temperatures dip. Slick roads developed quickly during the afternoon drive in and near the foothills. A jack-knifed semi-truck slowed down commuters that were traveling along Interstate 70 near the Evergreen Parkway through early in the evening on Tuesday.

Xcel Energy confirms public safety power shutoffs for parts of southern Colorado

abandoned industrial structure in delhi

On Tuesday afternoon, Xcel Energy confirmed its plans to implement a public safety power shutoff in parts of southern Colorado on Wednesday. “Xcel Energy will implement a Public Safety Power Shutoff beginning around noon tomorrow, April 22, to lessen the risk of wildfire and protect public safety, impacting around 7,100 customers in Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla and Rio Grande counties,” the energy company said in a press release.

Forecasted strong winds and low humidity, along with dry conditions and a historically low snowpack, will create high wildfire risk in the San Luis Valley. The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning with a Particularly Dangerous Situation in the area. On Monday, the company announced that public safety shutoffs were possible. They later confirmed their plans to implement them. Xcel said it will monitor weather conditions throughout the day on Wednesday and will only de-energize the lines if extreme weather conditions occur. Conditions are expected to begin improving by 7 p.m. The company said restoration work will begin once conditions are safe for the crews.

They expect the process to take several hours, but service in some areas may not be restored until Thursday. Xcel encouraged customers to prepare for shutoffs in advance, particularly those with medical equipment that relies on electricity. Enhanced powerline safety settings will also be implemented statewide to mitigate wildfire hazards. This makes the lines more sensitive and can stop the flow of electricity if anything touches them.

Former Colorado deputy, arrested in Mexico, sentenced to 10 years for possession of child sexual abuse videos

close up shot of a police vehicle

A former sheriff’s deputy from southwest Colorado, who was on the run for months before being arrested in Mexico, was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple charges related to possession of child sexual exploitation videos. Jesus Damian Nieblas was a deputy at the San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office until he resigned in June 2025. The following month, investigators from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation served a search warrant on his home in Norwood and said they found 27 child sexual abuse videos. Nieblas, now 29, was nowhere to be found, and a warrant for his arrest was issued. At the time, police believed he fled San Miguel County and a manhunt was launched.

State lawmakers bring bill to protect older Coloradans from financial scams costing millions of dollars

scam alert letting text on black background

A new report by the FBI finds elder fraud has reached a record high, including in Colorado. Nationwide, more than 200,000 Americans over age 60 reported fraud last year, with losses of nearly $8 billion — a 37% increase over 2024. In Colorado, more than 3,000 seniors filed complaints, with losses of nearly $75 million. Debbie Fox is among them. In October of 2023, she met a man online and began video chatting with him. She knew people weren’t always who they pretended to be, so she did her homework.

She found his personal and professional websites, asked to see his passport, and verified his business registration. His story appeared to check out, but she soon learned it was all an elaborate ruse to steal $48,000. “With a signed loan agreement and a bank letter of loan guarantee in hand I withdrew money from my retirement account, transferred it to my U.S. Bank account and wired it as directed to the bank account of a registered a business in Florida,” Fox said. She realized too late it was a scam.

Interstate 70 reopened in Colorado’s mountains on Tuesday night, about five hours after a snowy afternoon pileup involving approximately 70 vehicles. The series of crashes happened before 3 p.m. in the eastbound lanes, close to the Eisenhower Tunnel, and left one person seriously hurt and a handful of others with minor injuries. Snow fell on and off during the day in Clear Creek County’s higher elevations, but at the time of the crash a quick burst of heavy accumulation and strong winds led to dangerously slick road conditions.
