France saw around 1,000 additional deaths last week at the height of its record-smashing heat wave, the country’s public health agency said Sunday, as the head of the World Health Organization warned that Europe is now the fastest-warming continent and needs to do more to protect its citizens. Temperature records were toppled in several countries on the weekend, wildfires were sparked in Germany and Berlin police used water cannons to cool down the crowds. Meanwhile, the heat wave slowly moved toward eastern parts of the continent. Germany marked a new record for the third day in a row with 41.7 degrees Celsius (107 degrees Fahrenheit) in Neißemünde, near the border with Poland, which baked under its new all-time high of 40.5 C (104.9 F). The Czech Republic also experienced its hottest day ever with 41.9 C (107.4 F), up from the previous record of 40.9 degrees Celsius (105.6 F) on Saturday.
A new study from the World Weather Attribution, a Europe-based collaboration of scientists, reported Friday that the record-breaking heat and humidity in Europe this past week would not have been possible without climate change. The rapid study found that the heat would have been virtually impossible just five decades ago, and is 200 times more likely today than it would have been 20 years ago. France records surge in deaths during heat wave France reported a surge in deaths last week, including a sharp increase at private homes, especially in the Paris region, the national public health agency said Sunday. There were more than 1,200 deaths on Wednesday, when France was sweltering under its hottest temperatures, increasing to more than 1,400 deaths on each of the two following days, Public Health France said. In April and May, before the heat wave, France’s rate of deaths was about 900 to 1,000 per day. The agency concluded that France experienced a total of at least 1,000 additional deaths during those three days alone, an estimate it cautioned is likely to increase as more data is collected, including for deaths at home.
The increase was sharpest in areas under red warnings of extreme heat, it said. Those warnings blanketed about three-quarters of the country at the peak of the heat wave. The agency said that 85% of the deaths involved people aged 65 and above. Europe is the fastest-warming continent, WHO warns “Europe is the fastest-warming continent on Earth, heating at twice the global average,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Sunday on X. “Right now 150 million people are living under extreme heat, hundreds have died, schools are shut, grids are buckling.” Driven by climate change and global warming, the “once-in-a-generation” heat wave is now occurring nearly every year, Tedros said, adding that more than 1,300 excess deaths have been recorded since June 21 linked to high temperatures in Europe. “Heat stress is often called the ‘silent killer’ — and European homes, workplaces and schools were not built for these temperatures,” Tedros warned as he called on European countries to implement action plans. He said they should focus on preparedness, prevention and stronger health system responses.
Lightning strikes Swedish theme park In Sweden, several people were injured when they were hit by lightning at an amusement park, the country’s TT news agency reported. Three adults were taken to the hospital, among them a woman with serious injuries, after the lightning struck the Tosselilla Sommarland park in Tomelilla in the south of the country. Across Europe, the extreme heat has been followed by severe thunderstorms. Denmark, which marked new temperature records on Saturday, recorded 1,156 lighting strikes by Sunday morning, according to public broadcaster DR. Heat sparks wildfires in forests contaminated with WWII ammunition In Gohrischheide, in eastern Germany, a fire broke out in a large forest that’s still contaminated with ammunition from World War II, complicating efforts by firefighters. Similarly, a major firefighting operation was underway in southwest Germany near the village of Traisen, where the heat sparked a forest fire in an area that also contained unexploded ordnance.
Firefighters had to stop work temporarily after explosions took place and an ordnance disposal unit was brought in to continuously assess the situation, German news agency dpa reported. Some 650 people in Traisen had to leave their homes Sunday afternoon because the fire continued to spread. Fire departments in the big cities were busy sending out ambulances to people suffering from heat-related illnesses. In Berlin, an additional 500 ambulance dispatches were reported on Saturday, most of them heat-related. Berlin police use water cannons to cool down locals and tourists The German capital’s police found a way to help suffering Berliners and tourists alike. They put up two huge water cannons — usually used to disperse unruly protesters — in front of the iconic Brandenburg Gate and sprayed the cool water across the cheering crowd. The heat also worsened damage to infrastructure, with the concrete surface on countless highways breaking up, and a weekend warning by national rail operator Deutsche Bahn to avoid all unnecessary train travel.
More than 600 passengers had to be evacuated from an overheated train in Brandenburg after a tree fell onto an overhead power line during a storm on Saturday evening. The train, which was on its way from Hamburg to Prague, lost power. The air conditioners stopped working and the doors were locked until emergency responders forced them open. Two people were hospitalized with heat-related problems, dpa reported. In the eastern city of Leipzig, no trams will be running until early Monday morning due to heat damage to tracks and switches. The Leipzig Public Transportation Authority said that the high temperatures had caused the joint sealant for asphalt and concrete in switches and tracks to run and clump together in many places throughout the city’s network.

The UK has broken its all-time temperature record for June and France has recorded its hottest day ever for the second day running, as a heatwave affecting more than 90 million people sweeps across swathes of Europe. As the UK and France registered record-breaking temperatures, the World Health Organization warned that the extreme temperatures are “putting lives at risk”. 1:55 Europeans grapple with scorching June heatwave Temperatures bolstered by climate breakdown hit 36.1C (97F) in Gosport, Hampshire, according to provisional data from the UK Met Office. Earlier in the afternoon 35.8C (96F) was logged at Wiggonholt in West Sussex.
France recorded its hottest day since measurements began in 1947 as the temperature climbed slightly higher than the record set one day earlier. The national weather service, Météo-France, said the country’s national heat index, an average of the day- and night-time highs measured at 30 weather stations across France, hit a new record of 30C (86F), the latest in a series of never-before-registered highs. The previous record of 29.4C (84.9F) was set during the heatwaves of August 2003 and July 2019. The previous June record for the UK of 35.6C (96F) was set in Camden Square in London in 1957 and was reached again in Southampton in 1976.
The highest temperature ever recorded in the UK is 40.3C (104.5F), reached on 19 July 2022 at Coningsby in Lincolnshire. Much of western Europe continued to swelter under extreme heat. At least 94 million people, most of them in France and Spain, were expected to experience temperatures above 35C (95F), according to AFP calculations. Across Europe, more than 350 million people – nearly two-thirds of the population – were exposed to temperatures of more than 30C (86F), the news agency added. In Spain, the national weather agency said the daily average temperature on Monday was 28.08C (82.5F) and 28.17C (82.7F) on Tuesday – the highest ever recorded for June, while France expanded the number of departments under red alert.
Météo-France placed 72 departments – home to more than three-quarters of the population of mainland France – under red alerts for extreme heat on Thursday, up from 58 one day earlier. Across the country, more than 50 departments have recorded temperatures of 40C (104F) or higher since the heatwave began on 17 June, according to an AFP analysis of French weather data. As Météo-France forecast that the extreme heat would continue into the weekend across much of the country, officials rescheduled end-of-school exams and shortened visiting hours at the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. The city of Paris said it was launching a “level 4 heatwave plan” that included measures such as keeping most parks and gardens open all night and extending the hours of municipal swimming pools.
Outreach teams were also being deployed to contact people living on the streets, it said in a statement. Across Italy, 16 cities including Rome were under red alert for heat, and construction workers and delivery riders were told not to work between 12.30pm and 4pm. In the Netherlands, an extreme heat warning led to the cancellation of outdoor sports, scaled-down public transport and the shortening of school days, while local authorities in Switzerland offered free daytime cinema screenings in air-conditioned theatres. Across Europe, schools, hospitals, care homes and workplaces have struggled to handle sweltering temperatures that stress organs and push people beyond what their bodies can handle. Coping measures this week have resulted in trains driving more slowly, hospitals cancelling appointments, schools closing early or completely, and hosepipe bans.
In the UK, poorly insulated buildings and inadequately adapted infrastructure struggled to cope with the extreme heat. At least 1,000 schools and nurseries will be partly or fully closed in England and Wales on Thursday and Friday, with some bringing in early finishing times or relaxed uniforms. Transport bosses have urged people to avoid travelling and are warning those that do to “prepare for a disrupted journey”. Outside Buckingham Palace, the ceremonial guard changes were cancelled for the rest of the week, while organisers of the London climate action week said the soaring temperatures had forced them to cancel several events on extreme heat.
The Met Office issued a rare red extreme heat warning for 9am on Wednesday until 9pm on Thursday. Further amber warnings are in place for Friday and Saturday. “To see temperatures like this in the UK in June is sobering,” said Stephen Belcher, the Met Office’s chief scientist. “Events like this bring home the implications of climate change, with very high temperatures and humidity bringing significant health implications from heat stress, as well as impacts to a range of sectors such as transport, energy and water supply.”

United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation Monday morning after less than two years of overseeing civilizational decline in Britain. But just because the country got rid of “the worst Prime Minister of the worst Government of the worst party,” as one member of Parliament said, does not mean it is very much closer to solving its anti-Western crises like censorship and mass migration.
Starmer was the U.K.’s sixth prime minister in less than a decade — a churning in leadership consisting of Labour and Conservative governments starting right around the vote of the British people to leave the European Union. Reform U.K. leader Nigel Farage, who led that Brexit charge as a member of the European Parliament and is now a member of the U.K. Parliament, said that turnover is a result of Conservative and Labour — the “uniparty” — refusing to truly fulfill that Brexit mandate.
A major part of that mandate was to lower migration into the country, and yet the U.K. government has been allowing more than half a million non-EU nationals into the U.K. every year. The consequences of non-EU migrants in Britain were on full display last week with the publication of the Rape Gang Inquiry Report, which reported that at least 250,000 white British girls were raped, tortured, and trafficked overwhelmingly by Pakistani Muslim men.
It also stated that Starmer, while director of public prosecutions (something comparable to the U.S. attorney general), protected about 13,000 “rape gang members and paedophiles” by “let[ting] them off with warning letters” as opposed to prosecutions. “Starmer resigns — he has been a truly disgraceful Prime Minister. I do not believe him to be a good man or a patriot. He has deliberately and rapidly accelerated the destruction of our Britain, of our home,” Member of Parliament and Restore Britain Leader Rupert Lowe, who led the Rape Gang Inquiry Report, said.
“History will not remember him kindly, nor should it. I sat in Parliament, looking him in the eye, listening to him attempting to justify his decision to block a national inquiry into the mass rape of young British girls.” The report makes clear that the many thousands of Muslims responsible for these crimes were let off because those responsible for enforcing the law at every level were afraid of being called racist. Nonetheless, knowing mass migration was unpopular in the U.K., Starmer’s government boasted a 2025 decrease in “net migration” to just around 171,000 per year, with Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood claiming the government was “restoring order and control to our borders.”
But that “net migration” number is calculated by subtracting the number of migrants moving into the U.K. from the number of people moving out of the U.K. In reality, 813,000 people moved into the U.K., 77 percent of whom were not from EU countries, while 642,000 left the U.K. These are not just bodies being moved in and out of the country. Particularly in light of the Rape Gang Inquiry Report, this kind of migration results in a negative civilization quotient that is a compounding force in an existential crisis for the U.K. Beyond that report, statistics show that Western Europeans actually contribute to the economy and are much less likely to commit crimes, whereas Third Worlders are generally unproductive and commit crimes.
Of those who emigrated out of the U.K., around 250,000 were British nationals and roughly 118,000 were from a variety of EU countries. That is at least 368,000 Westerners leaving Britain. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of migrants from India, Pakistan, China, and Nigeria make up the largest portions of the 627,000 non-EU migrants entering the country. In other words, Westerners are being replaced with Third Worlders. That reality can only be understood in context of the mass censorship regime put in place by the U.K., which does not allow the British people to talk about these major crises in the public square.

Two young men and a boy were ordered Saturday to remain in custody after appearing in court on arson charges in the torching of four ambulances owned by a Jewish charity in London. The March 23 blaze in Golders Green, a north London neighborhood with a large Jewish population, destroyed four ambulances belonging to the volunteer organization Hatzola Northwest, which provides emergency care in the area. Oxygen cylinders in the vehicles exploded, breaking windows in an adjacent apartment block. The fire was brought under control, and no injuries were reported. British men Hamza Iqbal, 20, and Rehan Khan, 19, and a 17-year-old of dual British-Pakistani nationality, all from east London, were charged Friday with arson and being reckless as to whether life would be endangered.
The younger man cannot be named for legal reasons because he is under 18. He will be held in a youth detention center. The suspects did not enter pleas at the 45-minute hearing at Westminster Magistrates Court on Saturday. The court also heard that a fourth suspect was arrested in connection with the fire. Counterterrorism police are investigating the fire as an antisemitic hate crime. They are looking into a claim of responsibility by a group with potential links to Iran, but have not declared it an act of terrorism. “There is significant evidence that this was a premeditated and targeted attack against the Jewish community,” prosecutor Emma Harraway told the court. The three defendants are set to appear at London’s Central Criminal Court, better known as the Old Bailey, on April 24. Two other men were previously released on bail after being arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. The U.K. and Europe have seen a rise in antisemitic incidents in recent months, including an explosion outside a Jewish school in Amsterdam and nighttime attacks in front of synagogues in the Belgian city of Liege and the Dutch port city of Rotterdam earlier this month.

Abortion policy continued to evolve at the state level this week, with new restrictions signed into law, high-profile legislative failures, court victories on religious-freedom grounds, and ongoing preparations for 2026 ballot battles. Both pro-life and pro-choice groups remained active, framing developments around fetal protections versus access and health impacts. Here are the major stories:
1. Wyoming Enacts 6-Week “Heartbeat” Ban
Governor Mark Gordon signed HB 126, banning most abortions once a heartbeat is detectable (around six weeks), with exceptions only for medical emergencies. Wyoming becomes the fifth state with such a law. The state’s sole abortion clinic reported turning away roughly a dozen patients in the days following the signing. Pro-life advocates hailed it as a major step forward; reproductive-rights organizations criticized the early cutoff and warned of increased travel burdens for Wyoming women.
2. Tennessee “Abortion-as-Homicide” Bill Fails
A controversial proposal (sponsored by Rep. Jody Barrett and Sen. Mark Pody) that would have classified abortion as homicide—potentially carrying life imprisonment or the death penalty—died in a House subcommittee. No Republican members voted to advance it, surprising some observers and sparking protests outside the capitol. Pro-life hardliners expressed disappointment at the lack of support, while pro-choice groups called the bill’s defeat a “victory for women’s rights and common sense.”
3. Jersey (Channel Islands, UK) Expands Access to 22 Weeks
Lawmakers passed legislation raising the abortion limit from previous restrictions to 22 weeks and reducing other barriers. The new law sets a resident fee of £185 through government healthcare. UK pro-choice campaigners welcomed the move as modernizing outdated rules; local faith-based and pro-life voices voiced concern over the extended gestational window.
4. Indiana Court Strikes Down Restrictions on Religious Grounds
In a landmark ruling, Judge Christina R. Klineman found that Indiana’s abortion laws violate the state’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA)—the first successful challenge of its kind using religious-liberty arguments. The decision could open new legal pathways for clinics and patients. Pro-life organizations warned it may significantly expand access, while religious liberty and reproductive-rights attorneys praised it as precedent-setting.
5. 2026 Ballot-Measure Battles Heat Up
Virginia: A lawsuit was filed to keep a proposed constitutional amendment protecting reproductive rights off the November ballot.
Missouri: A measure to repeal the state’s 2024 abortion protections advanced in signature gathering.
Nevada and several other states remain active fronts, with KFF analysts noting that 2026 could see more voter-driven decisions on both expansion and restriction of access. Both sides are pouring resources into these campaigns.
6. Kansas Protects Crisis Pregnancy Centers
The legislature passed a bill shielding crisis pregnancy centers from certain regulatory requirements and advertising restrictions. Pro-life groups celebrated the measure as safeguarding supportive services for women; opponents argued it limits transparency for those seeking abortion information.
7. UK Catholic Leaders Oppose Decriminalization Push
The Catholic Archbishop of Westminster and other faith leaders intensified campaigning against clauses in the Crime and Policing Bill that would decriminalize abortion up to birth. A key vote is expected soon. This has reignited national debate on late-term procedures and the role of conscience protections.
8. National Trends and Data Notes
Medication (chemical) abortions continue to dominate (now ~63–65% of total procedures per recent tracking). Reports again linked strict state bans to measurable rises in maternal-mortality indicators and interstate travel. Advocacy organizations on both sides released updated statistics and called for federal or state-level action ahead of the mid-year legislative sessions.
The landscape remains highly polarized, with courts, legislatures, and voters all playing pivotal roles. For full details, check state legislative trackers and reports from the Guttmacher Institute and KFF.
