Crews working California chemical leak in Orange County make cautious progress in overnight operation, officials say

California firefighters made cautious progress during an all-night operation Sunday to test the pressure inside a cracked tank at the center of a toxic chemical leak in Orange County, officials told CBS News, as more than 50,000 people remain under evacuation orders. In an incident update posted on X, Orange County Fire Authority Interim Chief TJ McGovern said that crews would conduct the mission overnight to confirm that the “BLEVE threat,” or Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion, was eliminated.  “The BLEVE threat is the worst-case catastrophic event that we’ve been talking about. We are not there yet; we need to run this operation tonight,” McGovern said. “The worst-case scenario is still possible.” He said that an update in the morning would reveal the results of the overnight tank inspection to determine if pressure was released or if there was a vapor buildup inside the tank.

As of 6:40 a.m. local time Monday, OCFA has not offered an update on the status of the operation. In an earlier post, McGovern said that crews discovered a crack in the tank on Saturday night, which could be due to a pressure release. He said that it could alter the strategy as crews search for a solution to the crisis. “With this new information, it could change our trajectory and our strategy to this event,” he said at the time. “Last night was a successful operation for this emerging incident.” The Orange County Fire Authority told CBS LA on Sunday evening that multiple cracks existed in the tank. But in a post to X later that night, the agency qualified those reports, saying: “To clarify, there is one known crack on the tank. There is also peeling of weather stripping on the exterior, but this is not an additional crack.”

2 men and teen held in U.K. custody over Jewish charity ambulance attack

Staff in a newsroom work as a large screen displays BREAKING NEWS ATTACKERS ARRESTED: SUSPECTS IN JEWISH COMMUNITY INCIDENT DETAINED.

Two young men and a boy were ordered Saturday to remain in custody after appearing in court on arson charges in the torching of four ambulances owned by a Jewish charity in London. The March 23 blaze in Golders Green, a north London neighborhood with a large Jewish population, destroyed four ambulances belonging to the volunteer organization Hatzola Northwest, which provides emergency care in the area. Oxygen cylinders in the vehicles exploded, breaking windows in an adjacent apartment block. The fire was brought under control, and no injuries were reported.  British men Hamza Iqbal, 20, and Rehan Khan, 19, and a 17-year-old of dual British-Pakistani nationality, all from east London, were charged Friday with arson and being reckless as to whether life would be endangered.

The younger man cannot be named for legal reasons because he is under 18. He will be held in a youth detention center. The suspects did not enter pleas at the 45-minute hearing at Westminster Magistrates Court on Saturday. The court also heard that a fourth suspect was arrested in connection with the fire. Counterterrorism police are investigating the fire as an antisemitic hate crime. They are looking into a claim of responsibility by a group with potential links to Iran, but have not declared it an act of terrorism. “There is significant evidence that this was a premeditated and targeted attack against the Jewish community,” prosecutor Emma Harraway told the court. The three defendants are set to appear at London’s Central Criminal Court, better known as the Old Bailey, on April 24. Two other men were previously released on bail after being arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. The U.K. and Europe have seen a rise in antisemitic incidents in recent months, including an explosion outside a Jewish school in Amsterdam and nighttime attacks in front of synagogues in the Belgian city of Liege and the Dutch port city of Rotterdam earlier this month.

Springs Fire now 95% contained in Moreno Valley after overnight work from firefighters

blazing fire in the forest

Firefighters made significant progress on the Springs Fire overnight after it threatened Moreno Valley neighborhoods in an intense and rapidly developing situation on Friday. As of Cal Fire’s 6:45 p.m. update, the fire had burned 4,176 acres and was 95% contained. Containment was at 25% as of 10:10 p.m. Friday. Evacuation orders remained in place as of Saturday morning, according to Cal Fire. An evacuation map can be found here. The fire began at 11:01 a.m. at Gilman Springs Road and quickly spread due to “light flashy fuels,” according to Cal Fire. No cause has been revealed.

Powerful Santa Ana winds accelerated the blaze with gusts reaching as high as 70 miles per hour. Diminishing winds overnight, with more optimistic forecasts for Saturday, allowed firefighters to gain a greater hold on the fire. Those high-powered winds created difficult situations for firefighters and the fire approached neighborhoods in the evening hours. As of Saturday, no structures were damaged and no injuries were reported. As of Saturday morning, 260 personnel were assigned to the Springs Fire, including the deployment of two helicopters and 36 fire engines. Including Cal Fire, assisting crews include city fire departments from Hemet, Riverside, Palm Springs, Idyllwild and Corona, as well as Pechanga and Morongo.
