Litter of mountain lion kittens discovered in Southern California hills

Three blue-eyed mountain lion kittens have been discovered in the hills of Southern California, offering a hopeful glimpse into the future of a cougar population threatened by habitat loss and urban development. National Park Service biologists recently located the roughly 3-week-old kittens in a den in the Simi Hills, north of the 101 Freeway, according to the Ventura County Star. The litter includes one male and two females, all of which appeared healthy during brief examinations, wildlife biologist Jeff Sikich told the newspaper.

The kittens have been designated P-141, P-142 and P-143. The discovery came after GPS tracking data suggested P-113, who wears a monitoring collar, had been spending an extended period in one location. Researchers hiked into the area and found the kittens. According to the Ventura County Star, P-113 had been seen traveling with a male mountain lion, P-124, several months earlier. Mountain lions typically have a gestation period of about 90 days. Now, researchers are watching her raise her first litter. The kittens could eventually play an important role in the survival of Southern California’s mountain lions. The cougar population in the Santa Monica Mountains has become increasingly isolated by freeways and development, contributing to inbreeding, low genetic diversity and deadly conflicts between mountain lions.

Researchers hope the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing over the 101 Freeway, expected to open later this year, will help reconnect the isolated populations. If any of the newly discovered kittens eventually cross into the Santa Monica Mountains, they could help introduce much-needed genetic diversity, Sikich told the Ventura County Star. For now, the kittens are expected to remain with their mother for approximately 18 months before venturing out on their own.

Mountain lion cub rescued in Santa Monica Mountains is recovering after having leg amputated

A mountain lion cub who was rescued in the Santa Monica Mountains after being abandoned by his mother at just three weeks old is recovering well after a life-changing surgery. The cub named Crimson had been receiving treatment at the Oakland Zoo, where veterinarians spent months figuring out how to save one of his hind feet that was missing toes. In a post on Facebook, the zoo said they tried several approaches, but protecting the limb became more difficult as Crimson became larger and more active. They eventually determined that amputation the affected limb would give him the best chance.

The surgery was performed successfully and the zoo says Crimson has “proven to be incredibly resilient.” “Almost immediately after surgery, he returned to the curious, energetic behavior expected of a growing mountain lion cub. Based on his recovery trajectory to date, we are optimistic that he will continue to adapt exceptionally well. While he may experience some limitations in climbing ability or speed, these can be accommodated through thoughtful habitat design and specialized husbandry in an appropriate future home,” the zoo said in its post. New video shows the now 5-month-old cub sprinting around his habitat and appearing to thrive.

Inside a small enclosure lined with blankets and surrounded by at least two dozen stuffed animals, 5-week-old Crimson bats and tumbles. Then, he drops low, giving a quick pre-pounce shimmy before springing at his next “victim,” a fuzzy purple dinosaur with yellow hair. “These toys are a temporary replacement for the siblings he unfortunately doesn’t have anymore,” said Amber Foley, Oakland Zoo’s lead keeper. Crimson is a mountain lion cub who was found alone in the Santa Monica Mountains. One of the youngest animals the Oakland Zoo has ever taken in, and likely one of its cutest. 

Foley said he has quickly captured attention far beyond the zoo’s walls. “It’s wild, everyone all over social media has really taken to this guy, his story is in the newspapers, has grown a really huge fan following,” she said. His posts, featuring his big blue eyes and fuzzy black spots, have garnered millions of views, with articles in major papers around the country and across the pond. Wildlife officials aren’t sure exactly what happened, but believe his mother may have abandoned him because of missing toes on his hind foot. In the wild, that kind of difference rarely ends well. At the zoo, it means constant care, a bottle every three to four hours, and a furry cloth used as a stand-in for his mother.
