The Pigeon Mafia: International criminal networks are stealing high-priced pigeons

Pigeon in tuxedo and hat holding tommy gun standing in graffiti-covered alley

60 Minutes has reported on plenty of high-profile crimes before — but nothing like the “fowl play” involving the Columba livia domestica. That’s not some international crime syndicate. That’s the scientific name for pigeons, and they’re being stolen. We’re talking about elite racing pigeons. The finest compete at international events in which they are released far from home and must find their way back. As prizes have risen up into the millions, the birds have become targets for what insiders call — “the pigeon mafia.”

The Flemish region of Belgium is a land of medieval towers and fine chocolate. It’s also home to some of the most sought-after birds on earth. Yup – these guys. What Kentucky is to thoroughbred horses, Belgium is to racing pigeons. and there are few better at breeding a champion than Tom Van Gaver. where some see a bird that looks like it’s trying to remember how to breathe, Van Gaver sees an elite athlete with a calculating gaze.  Sharyn Alfonsi: What makes this pigeon a great racer?

Last week the WBZ I-Team reported that the Department of Public Health was proposing taking away non-lethal tools from security officers at Tewksbury State Hospital. On Thursday it did just that.  The decision came just months after the state trained and issued the security team the equipment. The increased security measures were implemented in the wake of an I-Team investigation that uncovered unsafe conditions and thousands of calls to police for help. Nurse says patients, staff at risk Ryan Wilkins is a registered nurse at Tewksbury State Hospital. “I think it’s incredibly unsafe and dangerous,” Wilkins told the I-Team, furious that the state is taking away tactical equipment from campus security. It’s a decision that he says is leaving the staff and patients vulnerable to serious injury. “We have a security force inside of our building that responds within seconds to our calls for help and to help intervene in behavioral situations,” Wilkins said. “We need their assistance, and we need them to be amply equipped to be able to do that job.” Tewksbury is a public hospital with a growing mental health population and treats some of the most dangerous and mentally ill patients.

Interview with Maria Hinojosa on Cesar Chavez’s Sex Crimes

silhuoette of a person

Chavez has long been one of the most celebrated Chicano figures in American history. He co-founded the United Farm Workers and led historic strikes, including the Delano grape strike and boycott. President Clinton awarded Chavez the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994, one year after his death. Countless schools and streets have been named after him.

Cesar Chavez Day is celebrated annually on March 31st, his birthday. But his legacy is now being reconsidered, following the damning New York Times exposé. The Times piece focuses in part on Ana Murguia and Debra Rojas. Murguia said Chavez first assaulted her when she was 13 and he was 45. Rojas said Chavez raped her when she was 15. He had first…
