A U.S. F-16 fighter jet pilot safely ejected before the aircraft crashed in northern Michigan on Thursday afternoon, officials said. The incident occurred in Grand Traverse County when the jet “experienced an incident” during a routine training mission, a spokesperson for the Texas Military Department said. Michael Kroll, spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, confirmed the jet was an F-16 from the Texas Air National Guard. The pilot is stable and was transferred to a local hospital, Michigan State Police said. Rescue efforts after an F-16 fighter jet crashed in a rural area near Traverse City, Mich., on Thursday.WPBN

The training mission originated out of the Air National Guard’s Combat Readiness Training Center in Alpena, Michigan, the military department said. There have been no reports of civilian injuries in the incident, which occurred in a residential area, Blair Township Supervisor Nicole Blonshine said in a phone interview Thursday afternoon. Blonshine said she did not witness the crash but heard it from her office. A witness, Nicole Conrad, said her kids noticed the military jet first. “I hear a big boom, and then I see a colorful parachute and this guy floating down from the sky,” she told NBC News.

Ed Wilson, another witness, said he saw the plane going down, followed by an explosion and black smoke. “The jet just went straight in with a nose up and disappeared,” he said. Social media video verified by NBC News appears to show a column of black smoke rising near a home in the area of the reported crash. A hazardous chemical spill related to the crash led to an evacuation of all business and residential properties within a 1-mile radius, state police said. The order was lifted as of 9:44 p.m.

Air traffic control audio obtained by NBC News describes the declaration of a possible mayday after the plane “may have taken a bird.” It goes on to describe “a lot of black smoke” after it reported “it appears that they may have lost an engine and ejected.” The Texas Military Department spokesperson said the incident is under investigation. An F-16 Fighting Falcon is a “compact, multi-role fighter aircraft” that is “highly maneuverable and has proven itself in air-to-air combat and air-to-surface attack,” according to the Air Force.

Wisconsin congressman and Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Tiffany said he suffered minor injuries after a plane he was in made an emergency landing Saturday night on Lake Wausau in central Wisconsin. In a post on X, Tiffany said while returning home from the La Crosse County Lincoln Day Dinner, in Onalaska, Wisconsin, the plane lost power as it approached Wausau Downtown Airport.

The pilot made an emergency water landing in Lake Wausau, he said, and the two called 911. As the plane began to submerge, Tiffany and the pilot exited the aircraft and swam to a shallow area where they waited for emergency responders, he said. “I want to express my deepest gratitude to the pilot, the Wausau Fire Department, and all of the first responders who came to our aid so quickly,” Tiffany said in the post. “They got us safely off the water and transported us to Aspirus Wausau Hospital, where we received excellent care.” The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office told CNN affiliate WSAW the plane will be marked with a buoy and asked people to stay away.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and State Patrol also responded to the scene, according to WSAW, and the investigation will be handed over to the Federal Aviation Administration. In dispatch audio obtained and verified by CNN, authorities mention someone inside the plane made a 911 call. Later, an official responding to the crash confirms two people inside the plane had been rescued. “Boat heads back to landing with two victims,” the official at the scene is heard telling dispatchers. “Both are alert and conscious.” “God was watching over us tonight, and I am incredibly grateful to be here in the hospital with my wife, Chris, by my side.

Tiffany, a member of the far-right House Freedom Caucus, won his party’s nomination for governor of Wisconsin in the primary elections, bolstered by the support of President Donald Trump. His Democratic opponent in the governor’s race, David Crowley, said in a post on X he was “grateful to God that Congressman Tiffany and no one else was hurt in this horrifying incident, which could have been a tragedy if not for the heroism of the pilot.” “I wish them and the Congressman a quick recovery and that they can find solace with their loved ones,” Crowley added.

Amazon cargo plane crash at Miami International Airport leaves 5 dead as FAA, NTSB investigate

At least five people were killed and five others were injured when an Amazon cargo plane overran a runway at Miami International Airport and struck several vehicles Sunday, officials said. The crash prompted a roughly 3-hour ground stop at the airport as emergency crews responded to the scene. The Prime Air plane, which was being operated by North Carolina-based 21 Air, overran one of the airport’s runways and came to a rest in an adjacent field, officials said at a Sunday news conference. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said the plane hit several vehicles near the 2100 block of Northwest 42nd Avenue, and more than 60 of its units responded to the crash. The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said it also responded.

21Air says it’s “devastated” by crash at MIA

21Air CEO Keith Winters released a statement on Sunday and said he was “devastated” by what took place at Miami International Airport. “We are devastated by the accident involving one of our aircraft in Miami today. “Our deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives.

Our immediate priorities are supporting those affected, assisting the authorities, and ensuring that accurate information is communicated as it becomes available. We are cooperating fully with the National Transportation Safety Board, the Federal Aviation Administration, and local authorities. The circumstances of the accident are under investigation.”

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue battles fire after plane crash, rescues victims 

Of the five people who were injured, three were taken to a local trauma center in critical condition. Two others were assessed and taken to local hospitals. None of the victims have been identified. MDFR said when crews arrived, the plane was on fire and spewing out heavy smoke.  “What we found was a very complex situation,” MDFR Chief Ray Jadallah said.  Crews used foam and specialized airport firefighting units to combat the flames, MDFR said.

Crews also conducted search and rescue operations, including for the pilot and co-pilot inside the cockpit, while also locating and assessing patients throughout the scene, MDFR said.  Officials did not provide further information on the condition of the plane’s crew. Officials have said it was too early to tell if the people killed were aboard the plane or on the ground. Several people were trapped inside their vehicles and had to be removed using specialized MDFR technical rescue personnel, officials said. 

Fuel leak reported at Amazon plane crash site

MDFR said there was an active fuel leak “occurring off of the aircraft that is being mitigated.” Residents and motorists were urged to avoid the area of 67th Avenue and 25th Street, Commissioner Natalie Milian Orbis said. Officials said there was no ongoing threat to public safety. Amazon responds to cargo plane crash Amazon confirmed one of its planes was involved in the crash. “We’re working closely with local authorities and officials to understand exactly what happened. Right now, our absolute priority is the safety, well-being, and care of everyone involved. We’re doing everything we can to support those affected,” Kelly Nantel, an Amazon spokesperson, said. Nantel said the company was “heartbroken to learn that five people lost their lives in today’s incident at Miami International Airport.

Our deepest sympathies go out to the families, loved ones, and all those affected by this devastating loss.” Amazon will “cooperate fully with any investigation,” Nantel added. Is Miami International Airport still under a ground stop? The Air Traffic Control System Command Center, part of the Federal Aviation Administration, issued the ground stop around 2:30 p.m. ET. Two of the airport’s runways have since been reopened, according to Greg Chin, the communications director for the Miami-Dade Aviation Department. The ground stop was canceled after about three hours, but as of Sunday night, the average delay for a flight into the airport was about six and half hours.

The FAA confirmed that a Boeing 767-300 that departed from San Juan, Puerto Rico, was involved in the crash. The 767 is 32 years old and had originally flown as a passenger plane for several airlines before it was converted into a cargo plane in 2015, according to Flightradar24. Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating. Sean Duffy, secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation, shared a brief statement on X, advising travelers of possible delays and cancellations.

A seaplane with 11 people on board crashed and caught fire a short time later in the Puget Sound area north of Seattle Thursday evening. All 11 survived, authorities said. Kenmore Air said in a statement that one of its planes, a de Havilland DHC-3 Otter carrying 10 passengers and a pilot from Seattle to Roche Harbor in the San Juan Islands “was involved in an accident” at about 5:15 p.m. local time in Shallow Bay, near Sucia Island and “everyone aboard has been accounted for.”

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office said everyone on the plane “was rescued from the water” and that “there are multiple patients with injuries ranging from head injuries to broken bones and lacerations, with 1 patient in critical condition and no reports of fatalities at this time.” The office said there were three airlift ambulances at the scene. Kenmore said first responders included the Coast Guard and local emergency personnel. Video taken by onlooker Monica Scott showed the plane wobbling as it flew only a few feet over the water, then crashing and bursting into flames. Kenmore said, “Out of respect for those involved, we will not speculate regarding the cause of the accident.” Its CEO, David Gudgel, said the carrier is “fully cooperating with the investigating authorities, and we will continue providing verified information as it becomes available.” Kenmore says it’s “the largest seaplane airline in the United States” with flights throughout the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia in addition to a “wheeled aircraft operation, Kenmore Air Express.” Shallow Bay is at the northwestern tip of Sucia Island State Park in Washington state’s San Juan Islands, north of Seattle and near the Canadian border.

A light aircraft crash into Beijing’s tallest building on Friday killed ​the pilot and injured 13 people who were not on ‌board, the local government said following the unusual accident for the Chinese capital, where airspace is heavily restricted. Those injured are receiving medical treatment and authorities are ​investigating the incident, Chaoyang district government said in a statement ​on Saturday. “A single-engine, two-seat light sport aircraft collided with ⁠a high-rise building while flying near the East third ring road ​in Chaoyang, at 5:55 p.m. (0955 GMT) on June 26,” said the ​statement, which was posted on social media.

“There was only one person on board, the pilot, who died,” the statement added, without giving any further details of ​the possible cause of the crash. Damage to the facade of the ​skyscraper appeared to be limited to a hole caused by the loss of ‌two ⁠large glass panels. The gap had been temporarily boarded up as of Saturday. Reuters reported on Friday the crash into the 528-metre-high building, known as CITIC Tower or China Zun, in Beijing’s Central Business ​District. It is about ​6 km (3.7 ⁠miles) from the Forbidden City visited by thousands of tourists each day. It is also near Zhongnanhai, a ​compound that houses the offices of China’s top ​political leadership. The ⁠incident follows Beijing’s ban since May on buying, renting or flying drones without authorization, due to public security concerns.

The last aircraft crash in ⁠Beijing ​was in 2022, when a tourist helicopter ​crashed during a flight between the Changping and Fangshan districts, killing the two pilots ​on board.

On Friday afternoon a small plane appeared to evade some of the world’s strictest aviation controls and slam into the tallest skyscraper in Beijing, the 109-story CITIC Tower that dominates the city’s skyline, killing the pilot and injuring 13 other people. The crash sent shards of glass and aircraft debris plummeting hundreds of feet down to the streets below as office workers left for the weekend, causing panic in the heart of China’s most protected city. A short while later, it was like nothing had happened. All mention of the incident – and the shocking footage of it – had been scrubbed from Chinese social media. The government initially did not publicly acknowledge any incident had taken place.

State media – including the country’s national broadcaster CCTV, headquartered across the road from the crash site – made no mention of the shocking incident. That’s thanks to the work of China’s army of censors and the Communist authorities’ obsessive control over information – particularly concerning events they believe may bring negative attention or consequences The information vacuum left a host of unanswered questions for those who witnessed the event, or saw reports of it. For almost a day it was unknown how many people were injured in the incident. On Saturday afternoon local time, media affiliated with the Beijing government reported a “single-engine double-seat light sports aircraft collided with a high-rise building in flight,” and that the pilot – the only person on board – had been killed and 13 people injured at the scene.

The incident was being “investigated,” it said. It’s still unknown whether the crash was accidental or intentional. Perhaps most worryingly for authorities, it’s also raised questions of how the pilot managed to fly over China’s fortified capital, where most of the Communist Party elite live, and where even flying drones is effectively banned. The CITIC tower, is 528-meters tall (equivalent to 1,732 feet). It has been Beijing’s tallest building since 2018 and dominates the skyline. It hosts China’s state-owned conglomerate CITIC Group and tech giant Alibaba and the surrounding neighborhood is a prime location in Beijing, and frequented by foreigners and diplomats. The embassies of countries ranging from the UK to Vietnam are just steps away, as are big names in global finance including the World Bank and IFC’s China offices.

The crash happened on Friday late afternoon during rush hour. Footage shared online in the brief window before the censors swung into action showed a small plane crashing into the upper level of the building, also known as China Zun, sending debris and a tail section of the plane showering down onto the city. Online images showing the plane’s registration code seemed to point to a domestically manufactured light sport aircraft, a Sunward SA 60L Aurora, owned by a local general aviation company, which offers services like pilot training, personal recreational flights and aerial photography. CNN saw crowds evacuating from the skyscraper gathering on the streets near the entrance, along with firetrucks, police cars and an ambulance. Information vacuum Beijing resident Anna, who wanted only her first name used, said she went to the site after hearing about the crash online.

“I was just like two stops away… and I saw this post… but it gets deleted soon. So I just came here.” The footage has since gone viral on social media outside mainland China. Inside the country, a search for “plane crash in Beijing” on Weibo, China’s version of X, produced no relevant results. It is common practice for Chinese authorities to act quickly to censor or impose an information blackout and deploy a heavy police presence to any incident that is seen as potentially destabilizing social stability. On Saturday, roads near the CITIC Tower were closed and police were present around the site. Only people who could prove they work in the area were allowed to enter. Delivery drivers were stuck outside and waiting for employees to come out to collect their orders, according to a CNN journalist. A press official with the Beijing municipal government said in a phone call on Saturday that “the incident is currently under investigation, and an official statement will follow” without saying when.

Unverified flight data from Flightradar24 posted online appeared to show a severely deviated flight path for the aircraft after it took off from Beijing’s Shifosi airport. Flying any light aircraft in Beijing requires approval from both the Civil Aviation Administration of China and the People’s Liberation Army Air Force. Beijing enacted a sweeping regulation last month to effectively ban casual recreational flying and consumer drones. Deadly and highly-public incidents in China are sometimes followed by official information vacuums that can last for years. Beijing is yet to offer any official explanation more than four years after a China Eastern Boeing 737-800 passenger jet crashed in the Guangxi region and killed 132 people, in the country’s deadliest air disaster for decades.

The crash happened at about 4:20 p.m. at the Sonoma Valley Airport, also known locally as the Schellville Airport, in Sonoma. A small plane crashed Sunday in the yard of a home near Tampa, Florida, killing one person, authorities said. The crash sparked a fire on the property, and the residence itself “sustained some damage,” said Sarah Andeara, the Pasco County public information officer, in a statement that CBS affiliate WTSP shared with CBS News. Pasco County includes the neighborhood of Wesley Chapel, where the incident happened. A neighbor’s ring camera footage showed a plume of smoke rising up from the yard where the plane crashed. Flames had been extinguished by 10:30 a.m. ET, said Andeara.
