Evacuation warnings in place as 50-acre fire burns on Mount Diablo in Contra Costa County

Evacuation warnings were in place near Mount Diablo as a 50-acre blaze, which fire officials have named the Morgan Fire, broke out in Contra Costa County on Friday afternoon. The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District told CBS News Bay Area that reports of the fire came in just before 3 p.m. The Morgan Fire is burning in the area of Morgan Territory and March Creek Road with fire retardant around roughly 75% of the fire line, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Prevention (Cal Fire) said.

Cal Fire airplanes were seen flying over the area. Footage reviewed by CBS News Bay Area showed helitankers dumping water over the flames, and firefighters have been working to fight back the blaze on the ground. According to PG&E, there have been no outages from the Morgan Fire, but they said they are closely monitoring the situation. There have been no reports yet as of Friday evening as to how this fire started. Evacuation warnings in place Two zones stretching south from the point of the fire are under an evacuation warning, meaning people in those areas should be ready to leave immediately if the conditions worsen.

Those zones are CCC-249 and CCC-250, and they stretch south along the east side of Mount Diablo State Park to the Morgan Regional Preserve. View a live evacuation order map of the Morgan Fire here.

San Francisco museum exhibit highlights lowrider culture, draws in car enthusiasts

Lowrider culture took center stage at San Francisco’s de Young Museum as community members gathered to celebrate the cultural movement’s contributions to the Bay Area alongside artist Rose B. Simpson’s ongoing exhibition, “LEXICON.” The event drew car enthusiasts from across the region, including Peruvian American lowrider owner John Ugaz, a member of the car club Excandalow. “So our car club, we’re called Excandalow, we are out of the Bay Area,” Ugaz said. Surrounded by custom paintwork and gleaming chrome, Ugaz said the opportunity to share his passion and craftsmanship with the broader San Francisco community was especially meaningful given the stereotypes lowrider enthusiasts have faced over the years.

“We were stereotyped back in the days that, owning car like this, meant you are not a good person,” Ugaz said. “But in reality, some of us have full-time jobs, we have families to take care of, and we are just like any other people. We just enjoy this culture right here.” Visitors spent the day admiring vehicles, including Ugaz’s 1961 Chevrolet Impala, displayed outside on the museum grounds. Among them was Jenifer Lomeli, who said seeing lowriders showcased at one of the city’s most prominent cultural institutions felt like a significant milestone. “From back in the day, it was considered a crime, to now being like, at the steps of such an important institution,” Lomeli said. “I mean the validation is great but also it brings more relevance to light, of like, the culture has been here, it should not have been a crime to begin with.” The exhibition, “Rose B. Simpson: LEXICON,” remains on view at the de Young Museum through February 2027. Museum officials said they hope the event encourages visitors to recognize connections between different communities.

“You know what one may perceive as communities that don’t have things in common, or are not connected, things like this actually show our connections, and it’s a beautiful intersection to be at,” said Abram Jackson, director of interpretation for the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. For Ugaz, the cars may attract attention, but he said the community surrounding lowrider culture is what matters most. “Enjoying being around friends and those friends bringing out their families,” Ugaz said. “The culture being united amongst a lot of people.”

San Francisco Zoo welcomes first penguin chicks in three years

The San Francisco Zoo recently welcomed three Magellanic penguin chicks, the first successful hatching of these South American birds at the zoo in three years. The zoo said in a press release on Friday that the three chicks were hatched nearly four weeks ago, and zookeepers attribute their long-awaited success to the decision to incubate and hand-rear the penguins, rather than let their penguin parents raise them.

“One of the key reasons is that it had been a few years since we’ve had chicks and some of the potential parents were not at the experience level we prefer. So basically, we decided to hand-rear them, which entails nearly 24-hour care in the beginning,” Brice Smith, the zoo’s assistant curator of birds said in a statement. T San Francisco Zoo The SF Zoo’s breeding colony of Magellanic penguins is the most successful in a zoo accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, hatching between two and five chicks each year since the late 1980s, according to zoo officials. This year, after the death of a few penguins from old age or illness, the zoo secured approval to pair up penguin parents, said curator Quinn Brown. “Breeding is highly strategic,” said Brown. “Some of our pairs have been very successful, and some are not approved to breed as their genetics may be overrepresented in accredited facilities.”

Native to the southern coast of South America with populations mostly hailing from Argentina, Chile and the Falkland Islands, Magellanic penguins are listed as Near Threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Zoo officials said that the three chicks are growing steadily and will continue to have their “fluff” for the next several weeks. In the meantime, they are being hand-fed, like the rest of the Penguin Island colony. “When they’ve matured a bit more, we will start teaching them how to swim,” said Smith. “They are a little awkward, but get the hang of things easily.” Staff plans to introduce the chicks to the rest of the Penguin Island residents later this summer,

A man was arrested in San Jose for multiple sexual batteries of women, and investigators believe there may be more victims, police said. In a press release Tuesday, the San Jose Police Department said that officers responded on March 19 to a report of a sexual battery at a Westfield Valley Fair mall parking lot on Stevens Creek Boulevard, at around 9:40 p.m. A woman told officers that she was walking to her car when she was approached by a man who sexually assaulted her over her clothing.Ā  The suspect fled before police arrived.

The woman said she fell to the ground while trying to fight off the suspect and was slightly injured in the attack, police said. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment.Ā  During the investigation, detectives identified the suspect as 19-year-old Cupertino resident Josiah Adorno. Detectives also linked him to two similar sexual batteries in San Jose, police said. On May 26, officers arrested Adorno in San Jose and booked him into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for multiple crimes, including false imprisonment and felony sexual battery. Due to the nature of the alleged crimes, detectives believe there may be additional survivors.

Dead gray whale found in water off San Leandro

Officials in San Leandro are urging residents to avoid a portion of the Bay Trail after a dead gray whale washed ashore. On Thursday, the city said the whale was found along the shoreline south of Marina Park. Experts said the whale is an adult male, measuring about 12 meters (39.3 feet) in length. In a video posted on the city’s social media, the city said it is coordinating with regional and federal marine wildlife agencies on the response. The California Academy of Sciences and the National Marine Fisheries Service will conduct a necropsy to determine the whale’s cause of death and support ongoing research into the West Coast’s declining gray whale populations.

A small plane crashed at an airport in Sonoma County on Wednesday, injuring three people, authorities said. The crash happened at about 4:20 p.m. at the Sonoma Valley Airport, also known locally as the Schellville Airport, in Sonoma. The plane ended upside down with major damage inside a watery ditch adjacent to the runway. The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office said that deputies were working with medics and a helicopter crew render aid to the victims. The California HIghway Patrol said one person had major injuries and two others had minor injuries.

Monday is Memorial Day, but one tradition always happens on the Sunday before. Ā  In 1942, the USS San Francisco miraculously survived a pivotal battle in World War II and each year a memorial service is held to honor those who died. Ā But this year, there was a special guest who added his own footnote to history. Each year, the ceremony remains the same. The same parade of colors. The same memorial bell is ringing for those lost on the USS San Francisco. Ā And each year, a reminder of how ferocious the fighting was at the Battle of Guadalcanal on Nov. 12 and 13, 1942. “Ships maneuvered at close range in the darkness. Ā What followed was a point-blank naval gunfight,” said US Marine Corps historian, Master Gunnery Sgt. Jonathan Banks. Ā “Japanese search lights suddenly illuminated American ships. Ā And within moments, the night exploded with gunfire.”

The heavy cruiser USS San Francisco was in the middle of the fight, hit by more than two dozen shells. Ā Most of the command staff was killed, including the task force commander, San Francisco native Admiral Daniel Callahan. Ā Preserved at the memorial is the actual ship’s bridge railing, holes punched through it by the onslaught of shells. Ā For most, it’s a piece of history, but for one person in the audience, it was a memory. “A lot of times, they don’t tell the true story. Ā I’m telling you the true story,” said Tom McGarvey. Ā “I was there.Ā  You know what I mean? Ā They know me now.” A lot of people know “Red” McGarvey as the guy who opened up Red’s Java House, the iconic little cafe on the Embarcadero near Oracle Park. Ā But what people didn’t know was that on that horrific night and morning, Red was a 16-year-old kid aboard a Merchant Marine ship hauling supplies in the middle of the fight. Ā He remembers another merchant freighter next to his that was hit and went down in about 20 minutes.

ā€˜Chonkersā€™ the large sea lion takes over the San Francisco Bay area

A gigantic 2,000lb Steller sea lion nicknamed ā€œChonkersā€ has become an unexpected local celebrity after taking up residence in the San Francisco Bay. The massive sea lion swam up to a dock on Pier 39 in San Francisco about a month ago and has remained in the area since, drawing attention from residents, visitors and social media users who have been sharing frequent photos and videos of the animal looming over its peers. Chonkers is a much larger breed than the more common California sea lions found in the Bay area, which according to the San Francisco Chronicle rarely exceed more than 850lb and 7ft in length.

According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, male Steller sea lions can reach up to 2,500lb and 11ft in length, with a lifespan of 20 to 30 years. While Steller sea lions typically live around Alaska, harbormaster Sheila Chandor told the Chronicle in March that they stray as far as San Francisco ā€œevery few yearsā€. As many as 2,000 sea lions can often gather on the pier, depending on the time of year. The Chronicle reported last month that Chonkers could be seen near the Pier 39 viewing area, and that local harbor officials had described him as a ā€œmorning larkā€, advising people to ā€œget to the Pier earlyā€ if they wanted to catch a glimpse.

2 earthquakes strike off San Francisco’s coast

Two earthquakes struck off San Francisco’s coast Saturday afternoon, with weak shaking reported, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. A preliminary magnitude 3.0 struck around 4:40 p.m. just off the coast of San Francisco. A preliminary magnitude 2.7 followed minutes later.  There’s been weak shaking reported across San Francisco and San Mateo, according to the USGS website.  No damage has been reported at this time.

Tornadoes touch down in California’s Central Valley near Fresno, National Weather Service confirms

The National Weather Service has confirmed reports of multiple tornadoes that touched down in California’s Central Valley on Tuesday, as a powerful spring storm passed through the region. According to the agency’s Hanford office, two tornadoes touched down in Fresno County, while a third tornado touched down in Merced County. Meteorologists said the first tornado touched down 2.5 miles southeast of the community of Biola in Fresno County around 2:10 p.m.

The EF0 tornado had an estimated peak wind of 70 mph and lasted for about two minutes. Around the same time, the weather service issued multiple tornado warnings for areas north of Fresno. According to Fresno CBS affiliate KGPE-TV, school districts in the area issued shelter-in-place orders when the warnings were in effect. Ā  A second tornado in Fresno County was reported shortly before 5:10 p.m. about 8.5 miles northeast of the city of Clovis. The tornado covered two miles and lasted for about seven minutes “Damage assessment team reported snapped and uprooted trees consistent with EF1 damage from tornado around 5:24PM PDT,” the agency’s Storm Prediction Center said in a statement.
