A former Minnesota state trooper alleged this week that his bosses at the state Department of Human Services tried to bully him into quashing his findings of fraud in the state’s child care funding program. Jay Swanson, a former criminal investigator for the DHS, also revealed that it was well known among Somali refugees in East Africa that Minnesota was the best place to go in the US to pull off child care fraud schemes. And then, Gov. Tim Walz came into office — and Swanson’s entire department investigating waste, fraud and abuse was eliminated, according to Republican lawmakers.

Over 30 cars reportedly damaged in Minneapolis in 8-hour span, police say

Minneapolis police are investigating after they said at least 31 cars were reportedly damaged on the city’s south side within eight hours on Monday morning. Officials said the following incidents were reported to police between 1:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.:

  • Two vehicles were damaged on the 4600 block of 17th Avenue South at 1:34 a.m.
  • One vehicle was damaged on the 4900 block of 35th Avenue South at 2:12 a.m.
  • Fourteen vehicles were damaged on the 5700 block of 24th Avenue South at 4:18 a.m.
  • One vehicle was damaged on the 5400 block of 27th Avenue South at 6:23 a.m.
  • Five vehicles were damaged on the 5600 block of 25th Avenue South at 6:52 a.m.
  • One vehicle was damaged in the area of Hiawatha Avenue and 42nd Street East at 7:16 a.m.
  • Three vehicles were damaged on the 4400 block of Snelling Avenue at 7:49 a.m.
  • At least one vehicle was damaged on the 5000 block of 30th Avenue South at 9:01 a.m.
  • Three vehicles were damaged on the 5700 block of 20th Avenue South at 9:16 a.m.

As of Monday night, no arrests have been made.

Chilly stretch in Twin Cities with repeated frost chances, spotty showers

Thursday will be chilly in the Twin Cities, with areas of frost early and again in the evening hours.  A frost advisory is in effect until 8 a.m. Expect a mix of sun and clouds with spotty showers possible out west. Friday will be partly cloudy with similar conditions from the previous three days. It will cool with another night near freezing. The weekend will be quiet overall with near-normal temperatures and only isolated rain chances. Cooler air returns next week with continued light rain chances and more frost potential.

FBI raids nearly two dozen Minnesota child care centers in fraud probe, including ‘Quality Learing Center’

The FBI raided 22 childcare centers in Minnesota Tuesday morning as part of a wide-ranging investigation of social services fraud. Unlike this past winter’s Operation Metro Surge, the raids were not focused on immigration enforcement, but reportedly on prominent businesses tied to the Somali-American community. “Today the FBI with federal, state and local law enforcement is involved in court-authorized law enforcement activity as part of an ongoing fraud investigation,” a Justice Department official told The Post.

The targets included the Quality Learning Center — a Minneapolis day care that infamously misspelled the word “Learning” in its signage. President Trump announced a “war on fraud” in his February State of the Union address and put Vice President JD Vance in charge of a task force leading the effort.

Law enforcement in southern Minnesota canceled an alert for a 12-year-old boy who went missing Sunday night. The alert was canceled on Monday evening. The Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office says the boy was located safe and thanked everyone who assisted in finding him.

Officials say more than 100 homes were damaged and one person was injured in a “significant tornado outbreak” across Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa on Friday. The National Weather Service in La Crosse, Wisconsin, said it issued 26 tornado warnings during the outbreak, the most for a single day since the office opened in 1995. “The most tornadoes occurred locally north of Interstate 90 in southeast Minnesota and west-central Wisconsin,” the NWS said. A tornado that touched down in Olmsted County, Minnesota, around 2:17 p.m. was rated an EF2, according to the NWS, with wind speeds peaking around 130 mph. That tornado was on the ground for about 14 minutes, traveled about 10 miles and damaged “numerous homes and farms,” the NWS said.

Minneapolis man dies days after being assaulted by his neighbor, police say

A man in his 70s died days after his neighbor assaulted him inside a Minneapolis apartment building last week, according to police. Officers were called to the apartment building at 314 Hennepin Avenue around 6 p.m. on April 5. Responders arrived to find the victim, a 71-year-old man, unresponsive near the elevators on the 15th floor. Charges say the victim was not breathing, did not have a pulse, had blood coming from both ears and had lost control of his bodily functions, all of which are “evidence consistent with significant head trauma.” Emergency medical services performed life-saving measures and the victim regained a pulse before he was transported to Hennepin Healthcare.

Survelliance footage allegedly shows the victim holding a laundry basket while arguing with the suspect, a 61-year-old man who alos resided in the building. The other man attempted to walk around the victim to get in the elevator when the victim nudged him with his laundry basket. Charges say that’s when the suspect punched the victim on the left side of his face with a closed fist. The victim immediately dropped his laundry basket and fell to the ground before the suspect rode the elevator down to the first-floor lobby, according to the complaint. A security guard at the apartment told police that the two men had an “ongoing feud,” charges say. The guard says they were at the lobby desk when the suspect came out of the elevator and said he “knocked that motherf***** out.” Police arrested the suspect, who told investigators he punched the victim after he would not let him into the elevator, charges say, adding that the two used to be friends but “their relationship soured.” The Minneapolis Police Department says it was notified on Tuesday that the victim had died at the hospital.

Jury convicts man of first-degree murder for killing ex-girlfriend minutes after she posted about him online, HCAO says

A jury convicted David Wright, 51, of first-degree murder on Wednesday for killing his ex-girlfriend Mariah Samuels in Minneapolis minutes after she wrote on Facebook that he threatened her family and damaged her car, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office said. Wright was charged with first-degree premeditated murder, first-degree murder, second-degree murder and illegal possession of a firearm. The first-degree premeditated murder conviction means Wright will be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, the attorney’s office said.

He will be sentenced on Friday at 10 a.m. “We are happy with the results that justice was served today. While it will not bring back my sister, we will always honor her and keep her spirit alive,” said Salina Owens, Samuels’ sister. He had dated 34-year-old Samuels for a few months before she broke up with him, Samuels’ family said. She had a restraining order against him and had also posted a video online that she said showed him hitting her several times.  She was shot just feet from her front door on North 14th and Russell avenues in the Willard-Hay neighborhood, according to the criminal complaint.

Republican Tyler Kistner drops out of 2nd Congressional District race in Minnesota, to serve in other areas

Republican Tyler Kistner has announced he is dropping out of the 2026 race for Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District seat. Explaining the move in a written statement on Wednesday, the veteran said that he is being activated from the Marine Reserves to deploy to the Middle East.  “Recently, it’s become clear that my service to this great country is needed more in other areas,” Kistner said. “My work at the Pentagon has demanded more of my time over the last six months than I initially anticipated.”

Kistner ran for the seat in 2022 and 2024, losing both times to incumbent Democrat Angie Craig, who is making a run for U.S. Senate in the November midterm elections. Democrats vying for the seat include state Rep. Kaela Berg, former state Sen. Matt Little and current state Sen. Matt Klein. On the Republican side, state Sen. Eric Pratt is running. The 2nd Congressional District includes the major south metro suburbs of Lakeville, Eagan and Burnsville, as well as farmland. Craig has represented the district for the past six years. Before her, Republicans held the district for 19 years. And before that, Democrats had it for eight years.

Storm chaser captures video of tornado in southern Minnesota

Most people run to their basement during severe weather, but Melanie Metz instead runs toward the storm. The National Weather Service confirms three tornadoes hit southern Minnesota Monday night in Amboy, Matawan and Elmore. That’s on top of dozens of hail reports and even some gusts of wind nearing 60 MPH in southern parts of the state.  The weather allowed Champlin based meteorologist and storm chaser Metz to capture some seriously captivating footage. Metz has been chasing storms for 25 years. “I can’t believe it, honestly. I mean, that’s a long time when I started chasing it was before we even had smartphones, so I couldn’t see radar when I was on the road.

It’s been a long time,” she said. Monday night, her vantage point was from Truman, Minnesota — near Fairmont. She met up with a fellow meteorologist and friend to stake out the storm. She captured some incredible videos, including one which depicted an intact, super cell tornado. Metz believes it the tornado NWS pegged in Amboy.  “We ended up chasing this storm for quite a while until it finally started to organize and became a supercell and produced a couple of tornadoes right in front of us,” she said. Metz says the chase is thrilling, fascinating and combines her love of storms and photography. But—it’s not something to try without experience.

Officials have declared ice-out on Lake Minnetonka, about 10 days earlier than the median date for the Twin Cities’ largest lake. The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office Water Patrol and Freshwater Society declared open water on the lake at 5:38 p.m. on Friday. The median ice-out date for Lake Minnetonka is April 13, and last year, it came on March 29.

Spring Lake Park schools closed Monday after suspected ransomware attack

Classes are canceled in Spring Lake Park, Minnesota, on Monday after the school said it suffered a “suspected ransomware incident.” According to Spring Lake Park schools, an “outside actor” gained access to some of the district’s systems and staff down the systems in order to prevent the actor from accessing more information. All child care, community education programs and after school activities are canceled Monday due to the technology outage.  “We have been working with third-party cybersecurity experts and law enforcement today and will continue throughout the night,” Spring Lake Park Schools said in a statement on its website. California is not the only state reconsidering its classic car legislation as of late. Minnesota legislators are currently overhauling the state’s heritage vehicle rules, and it appears that some specific restrictions on when and where classic cars can be operated are under consideration. Officially known as HF 3865, the Minnesota State Legislature bill first brought to broader attention by CBT News captures a broad swath of rules and regulations for owning, registering, and operating classic cars in the North Star State. Minnesota uses a variety of license plate designations—pioneer plate, classic car plate, street rod plate, and collector plate—to categorize the year range and use case for vintage vehicles, but the most notable change in this overhauled bill focuses on use cases for all retro rides.

Police in St. Paul, Minnesota, say officers arrested a woman who was “disrupting” Easter Sunday services at Cities Church, the site where an anti-immigration enforcement protest in January led to federal prosecutors charging dozens of demonstrators and some journalists. Police say several officers were “working contracted overtime” Sunday morning at the church, located off Summit Avenue and South Saratoga Street, where “a group of protesters” was “using a blow-horn and yelling loudly.” Around 8:35 a.m., police say all but one protester complied with officers’ “numerous announcements” to stop disrupting the service under threat of possible citations and arrests.

Police say the woman, who has not been identified, was “arrested by officers for interference with religious observance.” Protesters have regularly gathered outside the church during services since Jan. 18, when several demonstrators and journalists — including former CNN host Don Lemon and Georgia Fort — entered the building during Sunday services in protest against one of its pastors, David Easterwood, who is the acting field director of ICE’s St. Paul office.

Trump administration sues Minnesota for allowing trans athletes in girls’ sports

The US Department of Justice sued Minnesota’s education department and the state’s school athletics body on Monday for allowing transgender athletes to compete in girls’ sports. In a lawsuit, the justice department claims that by making female student athletes compete against transgender girls, as well as share locker rooms and bathrooms with them, Minnesota is violating Title IX – the federal law that prohibits sex-based discrimination for any programs that receive federal funding. “Minnesota’s policies and practices create unfair competition, deny girls equal educational opportunities, and expose girls to a hostile educational environment with heightened risks of physical injury and psychological harm,” the justice department argues in the suit filed on Monday. Minnesota has fought against the Trump administration’s efforts to remove transgender athletes from girls’ sports.

There are only two months until the DFL party’s nominating convention in Rochester, Minnesota. One of the most heated DFL races is for U.S. Senate, where two successful elected officials, Rep. Angie Craig and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, are running against each other for the seat. One of the most heated issues remains immigration, where Craig has walked back her support for the Laken Riley Act. Craig was one of 46 House Democrats who voted for the Laken Riley Act in January 2025. The act was passed in the aftermath of the murder of Laken Riley, a Georgia nursing student. The act mandates that undocumented workers be held in custody for theft-related crimes pending any criminal proceedings, even when there has not been a conviction.

Minnesota public universities can continue to offer in-state tuition and scholarships to some immigrants in the country without legal status, a federal judge ruled on Friday, dismissing a lawsuit filed by the Department of Justice last summer that attempted to halt the programs. The decision follows a series of clashes between the federal government and Minnesota officials over immigration enforcement. United States District Judge Katherine Menendez said in her decision that the federal government failed to prove that programs offering in-state tuition for immigrants without legal status discriminated against U.S. citizens.

The fraud crisis in Minnesota has been a big focus for the Trump administration, and Vice President JD Vance hosted the first meeting of a new fraud task force Friday at the White House. Vance, who briefly spoke to the press before the group held a closed-door meeting, was joined about half of President Trump’s cabinet secretaries and senior administration officials assigned to the Task Force to Eliminate Fraud. The vice president said that the federal government for decades had not taken the issue of fraud seriously and that it needed to be tackled with “a whole-government approach.” “This is not just the theft of the American people’s money,” Vance said. “It is also the theft of critical services that the American people rely on.”
