The owner of a Marietta tree cutting service says business is up this week as residents grow concerned about the effects of heavy rain on their trees. Tree-cutting crews report they are working nonstop, removing trees as more severe storms are forecast. Crews with Top Tier Trees cut down a tree that fell in the yard of a Sandy Springs home. “We had a catastrophic failure of a 42-inch deep southern red oak that sprawled across the back of this well-landscaped backyard. It caused quite a bit of damage,” David Hall, the owner of Top Tier Trees, said. The tree knocked down a retaining wall in the home’s backyard.
“This is probably the twelvth or thirteenth emergency job we’ve responded to in the last couple of days,” Hall said. He’s had a busy week. Periods of excessive rain can weaken roots and make trees unsafe. Over in Marietta, David Lynch says trees in his yard started to lean in recent years. “We’re thinking about having that taken down just as a kind of preemptive move in case something reoccurs again. We just don’t want a second tree hitting the house. Being proactive rather than reactive,” Lynch said. Hall has this warning: “A tree that leans towards your house obviously is always of concern. If it’s within striking distance, it’s just pretty obvious where it’s going to fall,” Hall said. Tree experts warn that you should check the health of trees around your home.

The two main threats are wind and very large hail, with the possibility of an isolated tornado. Tuesday starts cloudy, warm and breezy, with temperatures in the 70s. Areas of fog are possible for the morning commute.
But it will once again be a busy afternoon with severe storms as a dry line and a cold front increase the potential for severe weather, prompting a First Alert Weather Day.
The timing of Tuesday’s storms will be between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., with 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. being the most likely timeframe for the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.
Just as local gardeners were getting into the swing of spring, Mother Nature is ready to deliver a cold reminder that the growing season isn’t quite ready yet. After a relatively mild start to the week, a late-season cold snap is headed for Southeast Michigan, bringing the threat of frost and overnight sub-freezing temperatures that could put sensitive early-season plants at risk. The most chill is expected to arrive in two waves later this week and into the early weekend. Thursday night and Friday morning are currently looking like the coldest period for the region. Inland areas, including Ann Arbor, Pontiac, and Howell, could see temperatures dip into the low 30s or even upper 20s.
Friday night and Saturday morning, while slightly less intense, clear skies and light winds will create the perfect conditions for widespread frost formation across the metro area. Lows will likely hover in the mid-30s, which is enough to damage “tender” vegetation. This round of cool air will happen as a cold front sliding through the Great Lakes mid-week will usher in a much drier and colder air mass from the north. While daytime highs will be in the 50s on Friday, the real concern is at night. Without cloud cover to act as a blanket, the heat from the day will escape rapidly. For those who have already started their outdoor containers or planted early vegetables, now is the time to have a plan.

A powerful tornado in Oklahoma on Thursday ripped roofs off buildings, destroyed homes, knocked down power poles and forced an Air Force base to close. The confirmed tornado moved across parts of Enid, a city of about 50,000 people in Garfield County near the state’s northern border, according to the National Weather Service. Videos posted online show a rapidly rotating column of air touching down, along with totaled homes.
There were no immediate reports of fatalities and only minor injuries hours after the tornado passed through, according to the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities were going door-to-door in some neighborhoods to check on residents. Severe weather season has been off to a very active start in Illinois, with everything from flooding, hail, and damaging winds – and more than 100 tornadoes statewide. As of April 22, the preliminary count for tornadoes across the state of Illinois stands at 101 and counting, easily leading the entire country by far. That’s nearly double the annual average of 54 tornadoes in Illinois. With our severe weather season just getting started and lasting through September, that number has the chance to go up.
The typical count for tornadoes per year across Illinois is 54, so we already nearly doubled that. As of April 19, there have been at least 20 tornadoes in the National Weather Service Chicago forecast area, which includes parts of northwest Indiana. The typical number for that forecast area is between 10 to 20 tornadoes per year.

The threat of strong tornadoes, large hail, damaging winds and flash flooding is returning to the central U.S. Friday evening into the start of the weekend — after a brief break in intensity, forecasters say.
More than 51 million people are under the threat of severe weather Friday evening from Texas to Wisconsin, and most of the storms will occur in the afternoon and evening hours. The forecast comes as communities are still cleaning up from tornadoes that struck earlier in the week.
Severe thunderstorms are forecast from Texas to the Northeast overnight, and for the central US. and Midwest on Friday, says the National Weather Service.
Maps show severe weather, tornado forecast for Friday
The Upper Mississippi Valley — spanning parts of Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin — will have “the best chance for strong tornadoes,” while parts of the central U.S. and Midwest will have “the best chance for very large hail,” the weather service said Friday.
This map shows the potential for severe weather Friday spanning from the U.S.-Mexico border up to Canada, touching states from Texas to Michigan:

A super typhoon steadily battered a pair of remote U.S. islands in the Pacific Ocean with ferocious winds and relentless rains, shredding tin roofs and forcing residents to take cover from flying tree limbs. Super Typhoon Sinlaku pounded the Northern Mariana Islands for hours before daybreak Wednesday, slowing just to inflict more damage across the islands of Tinian and Saipan, home to nearly 50,000 people. In the village Susupe on Saipan, the wind tore the roof off a commercial building and broke tree branches.
A blue sedan lay on its side. Resident Dong Min Lee shot some video of a car sitting on top of two others in his apartment building’s parking lot below. The winds also tore off part of his balcony railing. “I hope people will take an interest and help. The damage is really huge here,” Lee said in a Facebook message. Preliminary reports include a lot of flooding, uprooted trees and downed power lines, said Jaden Sanchez, spokesperson for the Saipan mayor’s office. There were no reports of deaths, he said. Authorities were advising residents to remain indoors and away from strong winds, but Mayor Ramon “RB” Jose Blas Camacho was out in the community assessing the damage, Sanchez said.
