Bear found in Mt. Pleasant relocated by wildlife officials, police said

A young male bear that was spotted up a tree in a mid-Michigan city has been safely relocated to Houghton Lake, local authorities said.  The bear was spotted on Tuesday morning near Francher Avenue and Mosher Street, west of M-127, and was in a tree by the time local authorities arrived on scene. The Mt. Pleasant Police Department and Michigan Department of Natural Resources teamed up on the logistics for the animal rescue.

The DNR said a thick pole vault mat borrowed from Mt Pleasant High School provided a safe space for the bear to land. “The tranquilized bear landed safely and completely unharmed after an 18-foot drop! DNR biologists gave him a quick medical checkup (he’s in great health!), tagged him, and safely relocated him about 60 miles north to a beautiful swamp in the Houghton Lake area,” the DNR said.

Two researchers charged with allegedly trying to smuggle mpox through Detroit Metro Airport

commercial airplanes at new york airport runway

Two foreign nationals working at the National Institutes of Health are facing charges for allegedly trying to smuggle mpox into the United States through the Detroit Metro Airport. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Vincent Munster, 53, a citizen of the Netherlands, and Claude Kwe, 38, a citizen of Cameroon, are accused of providing federal authorities with false statements after arriving at the McNamara Terminal on Jan. 25, 2026. Officials say the two people, who were researchers, originally traveled from Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, where an mpox outbreak was ongoing. Customs and Border Protection officials spotted the individuals with a black plastic case, according to a criminal complaint.

When asked, Munster and Kwe told federal officials the case was carrying diagnostic and testing equipment. Further inspection uncovered 113 vials in styrofoam coolers. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the FBI tested 20 of the vials shortly after the discovery — 17 of those vials contained “deactivated monkeypox virus” while another contained the chickenpox virus and two others contained human DNA. “No researchers should believe their positions, credentials, or professional status place them above the law,” said Jennifer Runyan, special agent in charge of the FBI Detroit Field Office, in a statement. “The allegations in this case are serious.

They involve the dangerous and unlawful smuggling of deactivated Mpox virus into the United States and alleged efforts to mislead our federal agents.”    Munster, chief of the Virus Ecology Section at the Rocky Mountain Laboratory, and Kwe, a research fellow, told federal officials that they were tasked with studying viruses that could affect the United States, according to the complaint. The individuals told officials they had been in the Republic of Congo for more than a week studying a strain of mpox. “Munster and Kwe did not present the true identities of the biological materials in their possession and did not provide or possess the necessary certifications. Rather, Munster and Kwe attempted to pass the samples off as unused diagnostics,” read the complaint. FBI investigators spoke with officials at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, who determined that Munster and Kwe needed a USDA permit to travel into the U.S. with the materials, according to the complaint.

According to the USDA, the Code of Federal Regulations mandates that “no organisms or vectors shall be imported into the United States or transported from one State or Territory or the District of Columbia to another State or Territory or the District of Columbia without a permit.” “I am grateful for the outstanding and diligent work of the FBI Detroit JTTF, FBI Billings’ Missoula Resident Agency, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection team at Detroit Metro Airport, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – OIG, for keeping our communities safe,” Runyan said. This comes one year after Chinese nationals were accused of smuggling a “dangerous biological pathogen” into Michigan. Yunqing Jian, 33, from the People’s Republic of China, was deported after pleading guilty and receiving a sentence of time served.

A man was arrested for allegedly running a meth lab inside Wells Hall at Michigan State University, police say. Court records show that 31-year-old Xin Tong was charged with malicious destruction of a building over $20,000 and operating/maintaining a lab involving methamphetamine. Tong was arraigned on Wednesday and received a $500,000 cash/surety bond. Officials say Wells Hall will be closed through Friday, May 1. The MSU Department of Police and Public Safety says it received a report of property damage inside the building last week and determined the damage was caused by “alleged criminal activity.”

Police say Tong allegedly had multiple substances — including sodium hydroxide pellets, hydrochloric acid, methanol, isopropyl alcohol, acetone, and butane. Tong was arrested and taken to the Ingham County Jail. It is unclear if Tong is a student or a staff member. The university says the building is undergoing further evaluation “to ensure a smooth return to normal operations.” Officials say there is no threat to the campus.

Late-season cold snap headed for Southeast Michigan to close out the week

hoarfrost and spiderweb on leaves

Just as local gardeners were getting into the swing of spring, Mother Nature is ready to deliver a cold reminder that the growing season isn’t quite ready yet. After a relatively mild start to the week, a late-season cold snap is headed for Southeast Michigan, bringing the threat of frost and overnight sub-freezing temperatures that could put sensitive early-season plants at risk. The most chill is expected to arrive in two waves later this week and into the early weekend. Thursday night and Friday morning are currently looking like the coldest period for the region. Inland areas, including Ann Arbor, Pontiac, and Howell, could see temperatures dip into the low 30s or even upper 20s.

Friday night and Saturday morning, while slightly less intense, clear skies and light winds will create the perfect conditions for widespread frost formation across the metro area. Lows will likely hover in the mid-30s, which is enough to damage “tender” vegetation. This round of cool air will happen as a cold front sliding through the Great Lakes mid-week will usher in a much drier and colder air mass from the north. While daytime highs will be in the 50s on Friday, the real concern is at night. Without cloud cover to act as a blanket, the heat from the day will escape rapidly. For those who have already started their outdoor containers or planted early vegetables, now is the time to have a plan.

Puppy seen peering out of abandoned house’s chimney rescued by Detroit Fire.

adorable brown and white puppy outdoors

A puppy was rescued from the top of a chimney in an abandoned Detroit home after a neighbor called for help. The foundation of the house was crumbling, so Michigan Humane called the Detroit Fire Department for assistance. Video shows fire crews using their fire truck’s ladder to reach the puppy inside the chimney. “This little guy was discovered at the very top of a chimney in an abandoned home. Yes, the top,” Michigan Humane said in their Facebook post. “A neighbor made the call, and with help from the @detroitfiredepartment, he was safely brought down and into our care.”

The puppy appeared exhausted as fire crews handed him off after the rescue.

The puppy, which appeared to be a pit bull or a mix breed, was examined by medical staff. The fire department gave the dog the name Stack.

Stack remains under the care of Michigan Humane at the Mackey Center for Animal Care while working to gain weight.

“Good calls, quick action, and the right people at the right time made this rescue possible,” Michigan Humane said.
