California lawmakers are expected to pass a new law ending child marriage within the state. Currently, California is one of three states that allow children of any age to get married if a parent or guardian signs off. The bill passing through the legislature would end underage marriage with no exceptions. “So many survivors of child marriage have been fighting for over nine years trying to get this bill passed,” said Courtney Stodden, a staunch supporter of the new law. Stodden spearheaded the battle to end underage marriage in California and across the country after her own experience as a child bride. When she was 16, Stodden married 51-year-old actor Doug Hutchison.
“I was living in Washington state, and my manager at the time knew actor Doug Hutchison, who was teaching acting classes in Los Angeles,” Stodden said. “My mom signed me up for the acting classes.” Stodden said she grew closer with Hutchison after six months. They married in 2011 after her mother gave consent. “He gained the trust of my mother,” Stodden said. Advocates of the ban said that there were 35,000 underage marriages from 2000 to 2021, most of whom were girls. They said the ban is critical in protecting children from sexual assault. “California must protect our kids and end child marriage once and for all,” said Assemblymember Gail Pellerin, who authored the bill.
“Notably, the age of sexual consent is 18 without exception, unless that individual is the spouse of the minor.” Thirty-three other states also allow underage marriage, but they have restrictions on the age of the child. The ban is set to reach Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk, who is expected to sign off on it.

A 21-year-old woman used a hammer to kill a 41-year-old man she accused of grooming her as a child, then she left an accusatory note on his chest, Florida authorities said. Journee McGrew is now charged with second-degree murder and tampering with evidence in a killing described by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office as a “domestic dispute.” McGrew’s father started driving to his daughter’s apartment to check on her after she reached out to his wife at 2 a.m. July 2, according to an arrest report filed in Duval County. On his way there, he spoke with her over the phone about what happened, officers said.
She told him the 41-year-old man came to her apartment and “demanded that she have sex with him,” but she turned him down, according to the sheriff’s office. She told her dad the man grabbed her, and she hit him with a hammer, officers said. The dad told investigators his daughter said, “I think he’s dead, Daddy,” according to the report. Her dad told her to hang up and call the police, then he called 911 himself, the sheriff’s office said. When officers arrived at her apartment, they reported finding the victim with blunt force injuries lying in a pool of blood outside McGrew’s unit. On his chest was a note written with a green highlighter that read “PEDO Touches Children,” the sheriff’s office said. Officers saw “copious amounts of blood” on the wall and the ground in front of the door, according to the report.
They interviewed McGrew, who told them the man had been sexually grooming her since she was 8 and had sexually assaulted her in the past, the sheriff’s office said. A few hours before the incident, she told investigators she sent him a sexual text message, saying she regretted how she had treated him, and invited him over to “spend time with him and have sex,” according to the report. She said he came over, and they went out for a while before going back to her apartment at 1 a.m., then they started to drink, officers said. McGrew told investigators the man brought up sex and pressured her when she turned him down, so she asked him to leave, according to officers. As she was walking him out, she grabbed a metal hammer from her closet and hid it behind her back, then he turned toward her at the door and wrapped his arms around her in an “aggressive” way, she told investigators, according to the report.
She pushed him away and there was a physical altercation during which he ended up the ground, and McGrew killed him, according to officers. When law enforcement got the warrant to search her apartment, they said they followed a trail of bloody footprints leading from the front door to the bathroom, where they found a bloody hammer in the sink. Investigators said they collected blood-stained clothes and other evidence from the bathroom. Officers asked McGrew if she invited the man to her apartment to kill him, but her response is redacted from the arrest report. She was arrested without incident. It appears no formal charges were ever brought against the man in Duval County in connection with the sexual grooming McGrew described.
This heartbreaking case serves as a reminder of the devastating and long-lasting effects that abuse, exploitation, and unresolved trauma can have on individuals and families. While the legal process must determine the facts surrounding the allegations and the killing, Scripture is clear that God condemns those who exploit or harm the vulnerable. Jesus gave strong warnings against causing harm to children (Matthew 18:6), and believers are called to protect the innocent, seek justice, and care for those who have been wounded. At the same time, the Bible teaches that vengeance belongs to the Lord (Romans 12:19) and that justice should be pursued through righteous means rather than personal retaliation whenever possible.
This tragedy also illustrates humanity’s deep need for healing, accountability, and redemption. Sin leaves scars that can affect generations, but the gospel offers hope for both those who have been deeply hurt and those who have committed grievous wrongs. Psalm 34:18 reminds us that “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted,” while Micah 6:8 calls God’s people to “act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly” with Him. Christians should pray for everyone affected by this case, including those grieving the loss of life, anyone who has experienced abuse, and those seeking justice, that truth would come to light, genuine healing would begin, and God’s mercy and righteousness would ultimately prevail.

Federal agents on Wednesday raided a section of Los Angeles that has become one of the country’s most notorious child sex-trafficking corridors, arresting nine people on charges related to selling girls as young as 14 for sex. The operation took place near a 3.5-mile stretch of Figueroa Street known as “the Blade,” where girls go from car to car in stilettos, soliciting customers for sex to reach their traffickers’ nightly quotas. The girls can be seen wearing hair bows and dangling condoms from Hello Kitty lingerie, their faces tattooed with their traffickers’ monikers. A federal indictment unsealed on Wednesday listed more than 50 victims, and officials identified an additional five during the sweep. “We really don’t know how many victims are out there,” Bill Essayli, the top federal prosecutor in Los Angeles, said in an interview on Wednesday.
“The more of these arrests we do, we get more information, we get more evidence, we get into their phones, we discover more and more victims.” Six of the defendants were identified by officials as members of the Hoover Criminal Gang, which formed in the late 1960s and claimed its territory in a swath of south Los Angeles that includes the Figueroa corridor. For years, the gang has controlled much of the sex trafficking there, and many of its motels. Among those arrested was the manager of a local motel, the Stadium Inn & Spas, where prosecutors said victims were held and exploited. An additional arrest on Monday was linked to the case. The operation on Wednesday came nine months after The New York Times published an examination into the city’s sex trafficking crisis, drawing widespread outrage and national attention to the abuse many of the girls face on Figueroa Street.
Court documents described how the traffickers worked together to recruit and control their victims, including by branding the girls’ faces, necks and buttocks with tattoos of their street names and logos. The authorities said Cameron Lockett, 23, beat one of his victims on her back and ribs, bit off a chunk of her cheek and then pressured her to lie when she was taken to the hospital for stitches. Officials said Caleed Mouton, 26, ordered one of the girls to get an abortion. Hours after the procedure, he required her to continue having sex with customers, according to the indictment. Prosecutors also accused Jorge Melendez, 23, of punching a 14-year-old victim in the face at least five times and dragging her by her hair because she did not meet her quota. “The whole thing, from top down, is just absolutely disgusting and horrific,” Mr. Essayli said. “When it comes to victims, these are among the most vulnerable victims that we see in the work that we do.”
The names of the lawyers representing Mr. Lockett, Mr. Mouton and Mr. Melendez were not available. Many of the girls on the Figueroa corridor have been recruited out of the Los Angeles County foster care system; others have run away from home and were in need of financial and emotional security when they were befriended by traffickers on social media. Several of the defendants arrested on Wednesday had promised girls luxurious lifestyles before turning violent, according to the indictment, hooking them on amphetamines and oxycodone to create addictions they could exploit. Editors’ Picks Years After High School, Their Love Story Began Is a ‘Frictionless’ Society a Trap? How Do I Stop Guests From Bringing Their Children to My Parties? SKIP ADVERTISEMENT Wednesday’s operation, which was part of a joint federal and local investigation known as Operation Broken Blade, involved Homeland Security Investigations, I.R.S. Criminal Investigation and the Los Angeles Police Department.
Prosecutors are using a federal racketeering statute that was originally aimed at fighting organized crime, the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, or RICO. In January, city and county officials announced renewed efforts to combat sex trafficking in the area, saying they would push for state lawmakers to pursue stricter penalties for both traffickers and buyers. “Let me affirm our clear commitment to everyone: The L.A.P.D. will protect the victims, will hold the traffickers accountable, and will restore dignity and safety along this corridor,” Jim McDonnell, the police chief, told reporters as he stood on Figueroa Street. If convicted, some of the defendants who were arrested on Wednesday face a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in federal prison, and a statutory maximum sentence of life in prison.

A Salem, New Hampshire High School teacher has resigned after allegations of inappropriate interactions with students on social media. “Definitely surprised. It just kind of hurts because he was a very liked teacher,” said senior Thomas Mallous. The district confirmed that the Salem Police Department has been notified and that a criminal investigation is underway. In a statement, Superintendent Maura Palmer said parents of students directly affected were notified immediately. The broader school community was informed of the teacher’s resignation on April 14. Parents described the situation as troubling. “I think it’s inappropriate,” said parent Inna Gacevic.
“I think we need to be careful with our kids on social media, definitely. I have kids on social media, but I make sure that we don’t interact with teachers outside of school in that way.” The Salem School District has a strict social media policy for staff. According to the policy, teachers are prohibited from “friending” students or sharing social media content unrelated to academic work. Community members say those rules are critical but acknowledge the challenges of enforcement. “It’s hard to keep track of that,” another parent said. “We can’t know what every teacher is doing outside of school or what every student is doing, but I think, for ethical reasons, as a teacher, you don’t do that.” Mallous said interactions between teachers and students on social media should be off-limits. “It should be rule number one of being a teacher never interact with your students online,” Mallous said. “It’s just not acceptable.”

Boston Police are investigating what they’re calling an “attempted abduction” outside the Dudley Street Neighborhood Charter School in Roxbury on Thursday morning.
According to a police report, a female student was playing on the playground during morning recess when a light-skinned man with hazel eyes in a ski mask spoke to her from a gray, scratched-up minivan. She told police he offered her money and asked her to come in the van.
When she screamed, school administrators responded and the man drove away.
The incident happened at the intersection of Shirley and Dudley Streets.
“This morning, an individual unknown to the school community attempted to engage with a student who was in the recess yard,” an email sent to parents from the school began.
Several parents showed up to school early to pick up their kids due to safety concerns after receiving the email.
“They said there was nothing to worry about,” one mother said. “They are trying to make it sound like a very small incident. But child abduction is a very big incident.”

Criminal investigators with the Hall County Sheriff’s Office have charged Joel Ernest Lulinski, 52, of Cleveland, with multiple felony counts after he allegedly used his cell phone to record underneath the clothing of minors at Lanier Christian Academy. Lulinski, a former physical education teacher and football coach at the Flowery Branch private school, faces 27 counts of the felony crime of using or installing a device to record underneath or through an individual’s clothing under certain circumstances.
According to authorities, all of the victims are female students at the academy and were under the age of 16 at the time of the incidents. The investigation began on April 2, 2026, when one of the victims reported her suspicions to school officials. The officials immediately contacted a Hall County Sheriff’s Office deputy who was working extra duty at the school. The report was quickly passed on to the agency’s Criminal Investigations Bureau, which launched a probe into Lulinski’s activities. Over the following 12 days, investigators determined that Lulinski had used his cell phone on multiple occasions to take inappropriate and surreptitious photos or videos of minors during normal school activities.

FORT WORTH, Texas – A man is in the custody of Fort Worth police after being accused of shooting another man in the groin. His family claims he was protecting his underage nieces from a man allegedly soliciting them for sex. Fort Worth man arrested Markus Renfro, 33, is in jail Saturday. His family members are explaining why he shot another man in the groin, and why they don’t think he deserves to be in jail. Dontavius Williams, Renfro’s brother-in-law, says he knew something wasn’t right.
What they’re saying: “My little cousin told me that the dude said, ‘Oh, come back and smoke some meth with me,’ you know, ‘have some drugs,’” Williams said. The family said this wasn’t the first time. Fort Worth police say officers had already been called to the 3700 block of Century Place on Friday morning after receiving reports of a man who was possibly under the influence soliciting children for sex. “We had already heard that a certain dude had been messing with other little kids around here,” Williams said. That’s when they say Renfro stepped in.
