States That Allow Bible in the Classroom

Texas public schools will now require students to read Bible passages and stories as part of the latest conservative push to expand the role of religion in public education—a move bound to escalate wrangling over the separation of church and state doctrine derived from the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment.

The Texas State Board of Education, which is controlled by Republicans, approved a reading list on Friday that would mean millions of public school children must read excerpts from the Book of Job and New Testament passages, alongside traditional literary works like Charles Dickens. The list will be phased in beginning in the 2030-31 school year.

The decision places Texas at the center of an ongoing national debate over religion in public schools. While no state requires devotional Bible study in public school classrooms, four states—Texas, Utah, Louisiana and Oklahoma—have adopted or proposed policies that significantly expand the Bible’s presence in schools.

Texas

Texas approved a required statewide reading list that includes Bible passages ranging from the story of Jonah to selections from Genesis, Psalms and Lamentations. Supporters say the Bible is being taught as an essential work of literature and history rather than as religious doctrine. Critics, however, contend the curriculum gives Christianity preferential treatment over other religions and reduces local educators’ ability to choose instructional materials. “This is unique,” Antero Garcia, president of the National Council of Teachers of English and a Stanford University professor, told the Associated Press.

“I don’t know of any other state with a mandatory reading list that includes religious texts.” The vote builds on earlier Texas initiatives, including the Bluebonnet Learning curriculum, which offers districts financial incentives to adopt reading lessons containing biblical references, and a 2025 law requiring the Ten Commandments to be displayed in every public school classroom. Another 2025 law, SB 11, allows school districts to adopt a voluntary period for prayer and reading religious texts, including the Bible.

Utah

Utah lawmakers approved legislation requiring selected Bible passages to be incorporated into public school social studies standards beginning with the 2028-29 school year. The law directs educators to use the Bible when teaching subjects such as American history, civics and Western civilization, while emphasizing that instruction should be academic rather than devotional. Supporters argue the Bible is foundational to understanding Western history, while opponents say the law risks favoring Christianity in public education.

Louisiana

Louisiana took a different approach by requiring the Ten Commandments to be displayed in every public school classroom. The law does not require students to read the Bible or participate in Bible study, but supporters have argued the displays reflect the historical foundations of American law. The measure remains the subject of ongoing constitutional litigation.

Oklahoma

Oklahoma drew national attention in 2024 after then-state Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters directed public schools to incorporate the Bible into instruction for grades five through 12. Walters said the Bible was an “indispensable historical and cultural touchstone” for understanding the nation’s founding documents and history. The directive prompted multiple lawsuits, and subsequent state leaders declined to continue enforcing the policy, leaving Oklahoma without a statewide Bible mandate.

What Does the Supreme Court Say About Teaching the Bible in School?

The U.S. Supreme Court has long distinguished between teaching religion and teaching about religion. In Abington School District v. Schempp (1963), the court struck down school-sponsored Bible readings but also emphasized that objective instruction about the Bible’s role in history, civilization, ethics and literature is constitutionally permissible. Justice Tom Clark wrote that “the Bible is worthy of study for its literary and historic qualities,” adding that such study, “when presented objectively as part of a secular program of education,” is consistent with the First Amendment. That distinction remains central to current legal debates. States defending Bible-related curriculum changes argue they are teaching the Bible for its historical and literary significance rather than promoting religious belief. Civil liberties organizations counter that some recent policies cross the constitutional line by advancing Christianity over other faiths.

What Are Released-Time Bible Programs?

Released-time programs allow public school students, with parental permission, to leave campus during the school day to receive religious instruction from private organizations. The classes are voluntary, privately funded and conducted off school property. The practice was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in Zorach v. Clauson (1952), which found that schools may accommodate religious instruction provided they do not sponsor or fund it. More than a dozen states now require school districts to accommodate released-time religious instruction if requested, and organizations such as LifeWise Academy have rapidly expanded Bible education programs under those laws.

Why It Matters The Texas vote represents the most expansive effort yet to make biblical texts a required part of public school instruction and is likely to intensify legal challenges over the separation of church and state. Whether other states follow Texas could shape the next chapter of the national debate over religion’s place in public education—and potentially invite another review by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Trump’s religious liberty report calls for building ‘bridges’ between church and state

A draft final report from President Trump’s Religious Liberty Commission released Friday calls for “building bridges between church and state,” a reversal of a long-standing U.S. legal principle.  “Americans must know their rights and stand with courage when those rights are challenged,” the commission’s report read. “To preserve this freedom, we must build bridges, not walls, between the City of God and the City of Man. If we do so, we will pass on a free and prosperous nation to the next generation,” it continues. The argument is a stark reversal of the legal principle that calls for the separation of church and state.

The phrase “separation of church and state” does not explicitly appear in the Constitution, but the Constitution states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R), who is a vice chair on the president’s commission, argued on Friday that the political left has used the phrase “to batter and hammer people of faith for the last 70 to 80 years.”  “This report will speak very clearly that Americans understand that they can not be attacked by that phrase any longer,” Patrick said, speaking alongside Trump, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and members of the commission.  In addition to calling for “bridges” between church and state, the commission’s report also calls for the scrapping of the tax code provision known as the Johnson Amendment, which prohibits nonprofit groups, including religious organizations, from endorsing or opposing political candidates. 

Trump created his Religious Liberty Commission last year, appointing Patrick and Dr. Ben Carson to serve as vice chairs. Phil McGraw was also tapped by the president to be a part of the commission.

Leader of Antifa Cell Members in North Texas Sentenced to 100 Years in Prison for Terrorist Attack on ICE Facility

Seven Additional Defendants Also Sentenced Before One-Year Anniversary of Attack to a Combined 450 Years in Prison Today, the Justice Department announced that eight North Texas Antifa Cell operatives were sentenced for their roles in rioting, using weapons and explosives, providing material support to terrorists, obstruction, and the attempted murder of an Alvarado police officer at the Prairieland Detention Center on July 4, 2025.

This is the first sentencing of defendants affiliated with Antifa following President Donald J. Trump’s executive order designating the group as a Domestic Terrorist Organization in September 2025. Benjamin Hanil Song, who was convicted of the attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, was sentenced to 100 years in prison. Together, the Prairieland terrorists received a combined sentence of 450 years in prison: 

  • Maricela Rueda was sentenced to 70 years in prison;
  • Cameron Arnold was sentenced to 50 years in prison;
  • Savanna Batten was sentenced to 50 years in prison;
  • Zachary Evetts was sentenced to 50 years in prison;
  • Bradford Morris was sentenced to 50 years in prison;
  • Elizabeth Soto was sentenced to 50 years in prison;
  • Daniel Rolando Sanchez-Estrada was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

“The sentences handed down today make clear that Antifa terrorists who attack law enforcement and federal facilities will face swift and uncompromising justice,” said Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. “Their violent extremism has no place in our country, and the Department of Justice will continue to aggressively investigate, disrupt, and prosecute those who threaten law enforcement officers or undermine the rule of law.”

“Today’s sentencings show the FBI remains committed to identifying, locating, and dismantling Antifa and its funding networks across the country,” said FBI Director Kash Patel. “Acts of violence against our law enforcement partners will not be tolerated, and we continue our work to protect communities across the country from domestic terrorism.” “These sentences justly punish the vicious, armed attack that these Antifa cell members planned and executed against law enforcement and detention center officers on the night of July 4th last year,” said U.S. Attorney Ryan Raybould for the Northern District of Texas.

“Their terrorist acts, attempted murder, vandalism, and explosives launched at a detention facility were a far cry from a peaceful protest or First Amendment expression.  Because of the prompt action of first responders that night and tenacious work of our law enforcement partners, in tandem with the prosecutors in my office, eight people have been rightly punished for these violent acts and their attempts to conceal them.  We will continue in this mission to hold others accountable who perpetrate such violence and fund these ANTIFA groups in the Northern District of Texas.” “The sentences handed down today send an unmistakable message: Attacks on federal officers and facilities will not be tolerated. The men and women of ICE serve with integrity and courage, often in challenging and dangerous environments. 

The calculated violence carried out by these Antifa cell members at Prairieland was an assault on law enforcement and an attack on the rule of law itself,” said Acting ICE Director David J. Venturella. “Nearly one year after this cowardly act, justice has prevailed. ICE will continue to stand firm against those who threaten our officers, our facilities and our mission.” The sentences follow a 12-day trial that began on Feb. 23, where jurors heard testimony from 46 witnesses and considered over 210 exhibits supporting the charges against nine indicted defendants: Cameron Arnold, also known as Autumn Hill; Zachary Evetts; Benjamin Song; Savanna Batten; Bradford Morris, also known as Meagan Morris; Maricela Rueda; Elizabeth Soto; Ines Soto; and Daniel Rolando Sanchez-Estrada. 

All were convicted. Ines Soto was granted a continuance and will be sentenced on July 1. Seven others, Seth Sikes, Nathan Baumann, Joy Gibson, Susan Kent, Rebecca Morgan, Lynette Sharp, and John Thomas, pleaded guilty prior to trial to one count of providing material support to terrorists and they will be sentenced on July 1.  Testimony and other evidence at trial established that the defendants were members of a North Texas Antifa Cell, part of a larger militant enterprise made up of networks of individuals and small groups primarily ascribing to an ideology that explicitly calls for the overthrow of the United States Government, law enforcement authorities, and the system of law.

An expert testifying in the government’s case told the jury that ANTIFA’s coordinated efforts involve obstructing Federal law through organized riots, violent assaults, and armed confrontations with law enforcement officers, increasingly targeting agents and facilities related to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement in opposition to the agency’s deportation actions.   Evidence at trial revealed that most of the ANTIFA Cell involved in the Prairieland attack looked to Benjamin Song as a leader. Song acquired firearms that he distributed to co-defendants and recruited members at gun ranges and combat sessions he conducted, as well as from various ideologically aligned groups.

For example, defendants Ines Soto, Elizabeth Soto, and Savanna Batten were part of a group that created and distributed insurrectionary materials called “zines,” according to trial evidence. Trial testimony reflected that, late at night on July 4, 2025, at least eleven of the defendants rioted and attacked the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas, which the U.S. Department of Homeland Security was using to house illegal aliens awaiting deportation.  The defendants dressed in “black bloc”—dark clothing with head and face coverings that concealed their identities—designed to hide each individual’s identity but also to aid and abet those members engaged in illegal acts by making members indistinguishable from one another to law enforcement. 

Evidence introduced at trial revealed that the defendants brought eleven firearms, body armor, and eleven military-grade first aid kits with tourniquets and other items to treat gunshot wounds to the scene of the attack.  Many of these items were introduced by the government as exhibits.  Additionally, DNA and fingerprint evidence linked many of the defendants to the items at the scene, and evidence obtained on phone locations supported that those who participated in the attack all turned off their phones or placed them in Faraday bags to prevent tracking on the night of the attack. After ANTIFA Cell members arrived at the detention facility, they began shooting off and throwing fireworks (explosives) at the facility and vandalizing vehicles and a guard shack on Prairieland property:

Karmelo Anthony found guilty of murder in fatal stabbing of Frisco student Austin Metcalf

A Collin County jury found Karmelo Anthony guilty of murder in the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a Frisco ISD track meet, bringing an end to a closely watched trial that drew national attention and sparked debate over self-defense, race and school safety. Anthony, now 19, had been charged in the April 2, 2025, killing of Metcalf at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco. Prosecutors argued Anthony intentionally stabbed Metcalf during an altercation between the two teenagers, while defense attorneys contended Anthony acted in self-defense.

CBS News Texas The jury reached its verdict after hearing testimony from dozens of witnesses over several days, including students who witnessed the confrontation, law enforcement investigators, medical experts and character witnesses called by the defense. Anthony was arrested shortly after the stabbing and charged with murder. On Tuesday, during closing arguments, Judge John Roach allowed the jury to consider a lesser manslaughter charge. Prosecutors said Metcalf and Anthony attended different schools and did not know each other before the encounter. Authorities said the confrontation began near a team tent area before Anthony stabbed Metcalf once in the chest.

Metcalf was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.  The trial now moves to its sentencing phase. Under a murder guilty verdict, Anthony faces a punishment range of five to 99 years or life in prison. A manslaughter conviction would have carried a sentence of two to 20 years in prison. How prosecutors presented their case Prosecutors called 21 witnesses before resting their case, focusing on testimony and evidence they said showed Anthony was not acting in self-defense when he stabbed Metcalf. Among the most emotional testimony came from Collin County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Elizabeth Ventura, who told jurors the stab wound pierced Metcalf’s heart. Ventura described the injury as a large, gaping wound that was not survivable. Prosecutors also showed jurors autopsy photographs during her testimony.

Student witnesses who were at the track meet recounted the moments leading up to and immediately after the stabbing. Memorial High School student Eddie Parra testified that Anthony was inside another school’s team tent before the confrontation and later became emotional while describing seeing blood and a wound in Metcalf’s chest.  Art by Pat Lopez Another student witness testified he did not believe the stabbing was an act of self-defense, characterizing it as “lethal force against non-lethal force.” How Anthony’s defense presented its case Defense attorneys argued Anthony acted to protect himself during the confrontation and sought to challenge the prosecution’s portrayal of the events leading up to the stabbing.

The defense called several witnesses, including Centennial High School track coach Adam Linwood, who testified that athletes commonly socialized in other schools’ tents during track meets. Linwood also told jurors Anthony’s teammates had nominated him for a team captain role, though he acknowledged there was no reason for an athlete to have a knife at a track meet.

This 10-Year-Old Saved Up for a 3D Printer and Built a Business From Scratch

Most 10-year-olds spend their free time playing video games, but Ernesto Gael Hernandez is busy running his own 3D printing business and dreaming of buying his mom a house someday. Ernesto / Credit: KRGV News What began as a fun way to make custom keychains for classmates has quickly grown into a thriving small business for the young entrepreneur from Brownsville, Texas. Now, with multiple printers running at once and products being sold in a local store, Ernesto is already turning creativity into success while most kids his age are still deciding what game to play after school.

Inside a small workshop at home, Ernesto spends his days designing and printing colorful creations including keychains, whistles, can openers, and fidget-style items meant to help people dealing with anxiety, ADHD, and stress. “I would wake up early and set something to print while I’m at school or after school,” Ernesto said. “Before football practice, I would also print something.” The idea first took shape just a few months ago when Ernesto told his mother he wanted to earn money through 3D printing. Instead of simply buying him a machine, she encouraged him to work and save for it himself. “My mom said that I could save up my chore money and buy my own 3D printer with my money,” Ernesto explained.

After saving $500, Ernesto bought his first printer and launched Prestige 3D Labs. He taught himself how to create custom designs by watching online tutorials and quickly realized there was real demand for his products. “I saw tutorials on YouTube on how to edit and make custom keychains for other people,” he said. Business has grown fast. Ernesto says he has already made around $1,500 in profit, and demand became so strong that he partnered with a local Brownsville clothing store called Jungle to help sell his creations. “The business is called Jungle and I wanted to sell my product there,” Ernesto said.

“I told them if they wanted to sell my product.” Now, three printers run regularly to keep up with orders coming in from across the Rio Grande Valley. For Ernesto’s mother, Samantha Quezada, the business has become more than just a way for her son to earn money. It has also become valuable time spent together. “It’s a handful, but honestly I enjoy that we get to do it together,” Quezada said. “It is part of our quality time.” She admits balancing school, football practice, and a growing business can sometimes be stressful, but she believes the experience is teaching Ernesto lessons that will last a lifetime.

“As tiring as it may be, sometimes it’s a little bit stressful. Time management is hard,” she said. “But it’s been one thing that we enjoy doing. We get to do it together and it keeps him on the right path.” And while Ernesto is already enjoying success at an age when many kids are just beginning to explore hobbies, his motivation is surprisingly heartfelt. “I just like doing it because I want to invest in a house for my mom and me when I grow older,” Ernesto said.

While he may look impossibly cute right now, Maverick belongs to a species often called “Africa’s deadliest feline” thanks to its astonishing hunting success rate. And somehow, this fierce little predator will only grow to about three pounds as an adult. The zoo first announced Maverick’s birth several weeks ago, calling him a major conservation milestone. According to Cameron Park Zoo, there are fewer than 30 black-footed cats living in zoos across the United States, making the birth especially significant.

“We’re thrilled to introduce a very special arrival… our first-ever black-footed cat kitten,” the zoo shared. Keepers first suspected Gaia was pregnant after noticing weekly weight increases. The pregnancy was later confirmed through radiographs on April 2. Gaia went into labor on April 7, but zoo staff noticed she was not displaying maternal care behaviors, something they said can happen with first-time mothers. To ensure the kitten’s safety, the zoo’s animal care and veterinary teams made the decision to step in and hand-raise him.

Since then, Maverick has been receiving around-the-clock care from the zoo’s bird and small mammal department along with veterinary staff. And judging by the videos the zoo has shared online, the tiny kitten is thriving. Despite their small size and adorable appearance, black-footed cats are known for being remarkably skilled hunters in the wild. Their hunting success rate is estimated at around 60%, which is more than double that of lions. Native to southern Africa, black-footed cats are elusive nocturnal hunters that prey on rodents, birds, and other small animals. Their tiny stature and spotted fur may make them look harmless, but wildlife experts consider them one of the most efficient feline predators on Earth.Now, Maverick is quickly becoming a star in his own right.

“This is just the beginning of an exciting journey,” the zoo wrote, “and we can’t wait for you to follow along as this little one grows.”

Nearly a week after a deadly explosion at the Clyde Apartments in Dallas’ Oak Cliff neighborhood, a 10‑year‑old girl who survived the blast has reunited with the man credited with saving her life. Vanessa, who lost her mother, Marisol Perez, and her 18‑month‑old brother in the explosion, met with Rodney Brown on Monday.  The encounter was emotional as family members thanked Brown for pulling the child from the burning building. Rescuer describes instinctive response Brown said he acted on instinct when he saw the girl moments after hearing the first explosion from his nearby building. As he carried her across the street, a second blast erupted, and flames quickly spread through the structure.

He attempted to return to help others trapped inside, but said the fire had already intensified. “I heard them inside asking for help. I can never forget that,” Brown said. “If I had enough time to go back, I would have dug my way in.” Family mourns loss while celebrating survival Family members described the past week as a nightmare as they continue to grieve the loss of Perez and her young son. Vanessa’s birthday fell on Monday, and relatives said Brown’s actions enabled her to reach the age of 10. “You made it possible for her to be 10 years old today,” her aunt said. “It would have been an even bigger tragedy not to have any memory of my sister.” Rescuer rejects hero label Brown rejected the label of hero, saying he was simply grateful the girl survived. “I don’t consider myself a hero,” he said. “I’m just happy she’s alive and with her family.”

Authorities Confirm First Screwworm Case in U.S. in 60 Years

A flesh-eating, parasitic worm has been discovered in the United States once again, according to officials. In a post to social media on Wednesday, June 3, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins confirmed the presence of Cochliomyia hominivorax, the New World screwworm fly, also known as the New World screwworm or simply screwworm. “As expected, @USDA_APHIS confirmed the detection of a New World Screwworm (NWS) fly in a 3 week old bovine in Zavala County, Texas,” she tweeted Wednesday.  stock image of Screwworm larva.

Alamy “@USDA and Texas Animal Health @TAHC officials are taking immediate action to contain and eradicate NWS from the area,” Rollins continued.  Her message was an update, alerting the public that she had already met with approximately 50 Texas cattle ranchers to discuss the development in the southern part of the state.  Screwworms were “largely eradicated” in America in the 1960s, the Food and Drug Administration previously said. However, a person who traveled to El Salvador in Central America and then returned to Maryland in August 2025 was the first case of a human being infected in years. The U.S. Department of Agriculture also shared a statement, calling screwworms “a devastating pest.”

 “It can cause serious, often deadly damage to animals and people in areas where the pest spreads. While NWS is present in parts of South America—where infections in animals and people continue to occur—it was eradicated from the United States decades ago. In recent years, NWS has moved northward through Central America and Mexico,” the agency said of the New World screwworm.The New World screwworm is a fly that lays eggs in open wounds and body openings, according to the Centers for Disease Control. The parasite typically finds points of entry through the eyes, ears, nose, mouth, or genitals of warm-blooded mammals. Once the eggs hatch, they turn into maggots that burrow into the host and feed on its flesh. 

Even small breaks in the skin can be enough for the screwworm to lay eggs in, according to the CDC. “One female can lay 200 – 300 eggs at a time and may lay up to 3,000 eggs during her 10- to 30-day lifespan,” per the CDC. “Eggs hatch into maggots that burrow into the wound to feed on the living flesh. After feeding for about 7 days, larvae drop to the ground, burrow into the soil, and emerge as adult screwworm flies.”If a maggot has burrowed into an opening in your body, it is important to have a health care provider remove them.

Do not attempt to do it yourself. If a screwworm is removed from your person, do not leave it on the ground. It should be placed in a leak-proof container with rubbing alcohol to kill the parasite. Live maggots should also not be left in trash bags, as they can still escape and spread.The USDA said sterile flies are one of the ways they have been able to combat screwworms. In a press release Wednesday, the agency specified that the screwworm had been found inside a 3-week-old calf’s umbilical area. The case marked the first time it’s been detected in the U.S. since 1966.

“USDA invested heavily in the tools needed to eliminate NWS ever since cases started increasing in Central America and Mexico,” the agency said. “The United States has defeated this pest before, and we will do it again.”

A possible case of the flesh-eating New World screwworm is being investigated in Texas, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported Wednesday.  This comes after screwworm was detected last week in Mexico, just 25 miles from the United States border, the USDA previously disclosed. That encounter was the closest to U.S. soil since at least last September, federal data shows. Wednesday’s potential case was found in southern Texas, the USDA said in a social media post, and a sample was sent to the USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratories in Ames, lowa, for confirmation. 

“We have already activated personnel on the ground and are working with local partners,” the USDA said. Rep. Don McLaughlin of Texas told Reuters that samples were taken from calves on a cattle ranch in La Pryor, a small southwest Texas community located about 50 miles from the Mexican border.  “If this case is confirmed I will stand lock step with every local, state and federal agency to work together and fight this horror,” McLaughlin wrote on X.  The screwworm detected in Mexico was found in a 5-year-old goat on May 28 in Mexico’s Coahuila state, which shares a border with southwestern Texas. U.S. officials have tracked 32 cases of the parasitic fly throughout the Mexican state, including 19 active cases, according to the USDA.  

Overall, at least 26,216 screwworm cases have been identified across Mexico, and upward of 2,700 remain active, the USDA said. The department shares updates twice a week on any new cases found within 400 miles of the U.S. in Mexico, and it prominently notes on a webpage dedicated to the New World screwworm that the pest “is not currently present” stateside and that “the current risk to livestock, other animals, and people in the United States remains very low.” But in recent months and years, the parasite has shown up closer to the U.S. than ever before.

In April, Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller announced it had been found at a location in Mexico that was 60 miles from the U.S. border, CBS Texas reported at the time. Texas officials have warned outdoor enthusiasts about the parasite since late 2024, when the state’s Parks and Wildlife Department issued an advisory saying the screwworm had recently been detected in a cow in southern Mexico. Last year, the first case of a New World screwworm infestation in a human was confirmed in the U.S., the Department of Health and Human Services announced at the time. The case was detected in a traveler who had returned to Maryland from El Salvador, HHS spokesperson Andrew Nixon told CBS News in a statement. Maryland health officials later said the person had recovered, and investigators did not find evidence of transmission to other people or animals.

A sweeping two‑month child‑exploitation crackdown across Texas has led to 276 arrests and the rescue of 89 children, federal and local authorities announced this week. Officials called Operation Soteria Shield one of the state’s largest coordinated efforts to combat online predators. The initiative, led by FBI Dallas and dozens of Texas law enforcement agencies, ran from March to April 2026. Those arrested face charges ranging from possession, distribution, and production of child sexual abuse material to online solicitation, trafficking, and sexual assault. The 89 rescued children include previously unidentified victims.  The crackdown brought together 91 agencies and 197 personnel, including investigators, analysts, digital‑forensics specialists, prosecutors, and child‑advocacy partners.  

Targeting online child exploitation Operation Soteria Shield focused on identifying people who target children across social media, messaging apps, and other online platforms. Investigators pursued suspects accused of creating, sharing, or possessing child sexual abuse material, soliciting minors online, trafficking children, committing sexual assault, and other forms of exploitation. Officials said the cases remain active and additional charges are likely as forensic reviews continue. The effort was announced by the FBI Dallas’ North Texas Child Exploitation Task Force and the North Texas Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Leaders stress trauma and teamwork Leaders from the FBI and the police departments of Dallas, Plano, Wylie, Garland, and Fort Worth emphasized the importance of interagency cooperation and the lasting trauma these crimes inflict on victims. “This would not have been successful without the resolve of each participating agency,” said FBI Dallas Special Agent in Charge R. Joseph Rothrock. “These are not victimless crimes,” Dallas Police Chief Daniel C. Comeaux said.

“They leave lasting trauma on children and families. I am incredibly proud of the work of our investigators and every agency partner who helped make this operation successful.” “Every child deserves to grow up safe, protected, and free from exploitation,” Plano Police Chief Ed Drain said. “This operation reflects our shared commitment to defend children wherever abuse occurs, whether that is in a home, on a device or through an online platform. The work done by these investigators has changed lives.”

Eight riders were stranded nearly 100 feet in the air on Thursday evening after a roller coaster in Texas stopped during its vertical climb. The Iron Shark roller coaster at Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier came to a stop midride, leaving the riders stuck on the incline for several hours. Video of the incident shows them seated in two rows of four facing the sky, just before reaching the top of the ride.

The Houston Independent School District said in a statement that the passengers on the roller coaster were on a field trip. It was organized by Energized for STEM Academy Middle School and STEM Academy High School, two HISD in-district charter schools, the district wrote. Fire Chief Mike Varela Jr. said at a news conference that crews arrived around 5:30 p.m. to rescue the students. One by one, each rider was placed in a safety harness and guided into a truck basket, which then lowered them to the ground.

Texas has finalized one of the most significant land conservation deals in its history, securing nearly 54,000 acres of Hill Country terrain to establish the future Silver Lake State Park.  Once opened, it will rank as the state’s second‑largest park, trailing only the 311,000‑acre Big Bend Ranch State Park.  Garner State Park Texas and the Rio Frio near Uvalde Texas David Radzieta / Getty Images State leaders say the acquisition strengthens long‑term efforts to expand outdoor access and safeguard the region’s natural heritage. The property spans Edwards and Kinney counties, about 150 miles west of San Antonio, set between Rocksprings and Uvalde.

According to state officials, the property features steep canyons, limestone cliffs, rolling hills, and long stretches of the West Nueces River, all centered around a spring‑fed 30‑acre lake. The landscape also includes creeks, waterholes, oak motts, caves, and pictographs, and supports wildlife such as white‑tailed deer, turkey, javelina, dove, and the greenthroat darter. Portions of the land may also serve as habitat for the endangered golden‑cheeked warbler. The gunman who killed three people and wounded more than a dozen others in a mass shooting at a downtown Austin bar in March was a “lone actor” and there is no evidence he was supported or directed by a foreign terrorist group, FBI investigators said Thursday. The agency released a two-page update of its investigation into the attack on Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden in the early morning hours of March 1 that ended when gunman, Ndiaga Diagne, was killed by police. The shooting happened after the United States and Israel launched an attack on Iran. Diagne was wearing clothes with an Iranian flag design and the words “Property of Allah.”

Despite lacking direct evidence of a motive for the shooting, investigators said Diagne was likely triggered into violent behavior by the war against Iran, “culminating in a violent, impulsive attack” at the bar, the report said. Investigators determined Diagne admired Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had been killed. His affinity for Iran and its former leader were likely factors in the attack Diagne perpetrated on his own, investigators said. “The investigation to date indicates Diagne was a lone actor,” the report said. He had never been the subject of an FBI investigation prior to the shooting. Diagne, 53, was born in Senegal. He first entered the U.S. in 2000 on a B-2 tourist visa and became a lawful permanent resident six years later after marrying a U.S. citizen, according to the Department of Homeland Security. “There is no evidence at this time that he was associated with a Foreign Terrorist Organization or that he received any direction, funding, or operational support for his attack,” the report said.

The bar is located in the city’s popular hub of bars and nightclubs. Police said the gunman drove past the bar before circling back and firing the first shots from his SUV at people on the sidewalk and inside. He then parked, got out with a rifle and began shooting at people walking along the street before officers rushed to the intersection and shot him.

A powerful storm ripped through the North Texas city of Mineral Wells Tuesday evening and caused serious damage, authorities said. Mineral Wells is located about 45 miles west of Fort Worth. The storm appeared to have blown through an industrial park, shredding buildings, ripping apart roofs and scattering debris across the area. Metal was wrapped around poles and an HVAC plant was heavily damaged, but employees had been sent home ahead of the storm.

Mayor Regan Johnson confirmed two major manufacturers were impacted, though there wasn’t an estimate yet as to how many employees would face job displacement. Debris, downed trees, and leaning power lines littered the area. First responders continued to assess the damage overnight.      City officials said Tuesday night that several people were injured and two were brought to Palo Pinto General Hospital, but no critical injuries or deaths were reported. Officials affirmed this in an update shared Wednesday morning in a press conference, noting that three more people who were hurt were also brought to a hospital via private vehicle.  Mineral Wells Fire Chief Ryan Dunn also said on Wednesday that several other people who were hurt refused transport to the hospital. Dunn said one of the patients taken to the hospital via ambulance faced a traumatic injury; the other faced a medical issue.

The National Weather Service gave the tornado that hit Mineral Wells a rating of EF-3 with peak estimated winds of 145 mph. Officials said other parts of the community, including nearby neighborhoods, were also impacted. Police Chief Tim Dennison said Oncor estimated about 2,200 customers were without power as of Wednesday morning, with that number including both residential and business customers. City officials said curfew has been put in place for the Fort Wolters area via a Declaration of Emergency Powers.

Those areas include the following locations: Energy Avenue (Country Club Estates) to the west US Highway 180 to the south Washington Avenue to the east Armstead Drive to the north The curfew was in effect from 10 p.m. Tuesday night through 6 a.m. Wednesday, and will now occur nightly from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. until further notice.

Powerful storms, hail up to softball size and multiple tornadoes tore through North Texas on Tuesday, causing serious damage, injuries and widespread power outages. As of Wednesday, nine tornadoes occurred in North Texas between Saturday and Tuesday night.  Tuesday, there was an EF-3 tornado in Mineral Wells with winds up to 145 mph, three tornadoes in Johnson County, an EF-U tornado in Montague County, 70 hail reports, with hail as big as just below the size of a softball, and seven damaging wind reports.  There were also tornado warnings south of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, where the NWS will analyze damage as well.

In Mineral Wells, several people were injured. The Mineral Wells storm blew through an industrial park, shredding buildings, ripping apart roofs and scattering debris across the area. Metal was wrapped around poles and an HVAC plant was heavily damaged, but employees had been sent home ahead of the storm. Debris, downed trees, and leaning power lines littered the area. Officials said other parts of the community, including nearby neighborhoods, were also impacted. This comes just days after at least two people died after devastating weekend storms. Saturday storms generated more than 100 reports, ranging from baseball‑size hail to 90‑plus‑mph wind gusts and multiple high‑water rescues across the metroplex.

Preliminary data from the National Weather Service shows an EF‑1 that struck Springtown in Parker County with winds of 105 mph and the night’s strongest tornado – an EF‑2 – that hit Runaway Bay in Wise County with winds estimated at 135 mph. Jack County also withstood EF-0 and EF-1 tornadoes.

Meth worth $8.1 million found in shipment disguised as tiles at U.S. border

Authorities at the United States-Mexico border seized a shipment of suspected methamphetamine, which had an estimated street value of $8.1 million, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Tuesday. The shipment was disguised as tiles, the agency said. Border patrol officers found the narcotics inside a commercial tractor trailer that crossed the Pharr International Bridge from from Reynosa, Mexico into Texas on April 21. Once it was inspected and screened by a team of drug detection dogs, officers discovered that pallets masquerading as tiles in the back of the cargo vehicle actually contained packages of white powder. 

Overall, they seized 200 packages weighing more than 900 pounds, along with the trailer itself, CBP said. Homeland Security Investigation agents have opened a criminal probe into the seizure, according to the agency CBP said the powder “tested positive for the properties of methamphetamine,” a synthetic stimulant that is considered highly addictive. Although there is an FDA-approved version of it that is very rarely prescribed for specific medical conditions, methamphetamine largely exists in the U.S. illegally, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Association.

The two main threats are wind and very large hail, with the possibility of an isolated tornado. Tuesday starts cloudy, warm and breezy, with temperatures in the 70s. Areas of fog are possible for the morning commute.

But it will once again be a busy afternoon with severe storms as a dry line and a cold front increase the potential for severe weather, prompting a First Alert Weather Day.

The timing of Tuesday’s storms will be between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., with 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. being the most likely timeframe for the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

Deputy injured, suspect killed after gunfire erupts during Fannin County call; Texas Rangers investigating

A deputy is injured, and the suspect is dead after gunfire erupted during a response call in Fannin County on Tuesday, officials said. According to the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy was responding to a call in the 500 block of County Road 5012 when they were immediately met with gunfire upon arrival. Bullet holes could be seen in the deputy’s vehicle from the CBS News Texas chopper. The deputy’s back windshield also appeared to have been shot out.

A statement from the Texas Municipal Police Association (TMPA), the largest law enforcement association in Texas, said that the deputy was the target of an ambush, and that “multiple rounds fired into the windshield and headrest of the patrol unit.” Officials say the deputy was transported for medical treatment. The suspect involved in the shooting is deceased. The Texas Rangers are on scene and assisting with the investigation.

The Texas State Board of Education is set to meet in Austin this week to consider controversial changes to public school curriculum, including a proposal that could add Biblical texts to required reading lists for students from kindergarten through high school, alongside revisions to social studies standards. The discussion stems from a 2023 law, 88(R) HB 1605, which requires the Texas Education Agency to recommend at least one required reading per grade level. After surveying thousands of teachers, the agency compiled a list of roughly 300 literary works spanning K-12, ranging from children’s classics like Dr. Seuss to works such as The Odyssey for older students.

FORT WORTH, Texas – A man is in the custody of Fort Worth police after being accused of shooting another man in the groin. His family claims he was protecting his underage nieces from a man allegedly soliciting them for sex. Fort Worth man arrested Markus Renfro, 33, is in jail Saturday. His family members are explaining why he shot another man in the groin, and why they don’t think he deserves to be in jail. Dontavius Williams, Renfro’s brother-in-law, says he knew something wasn’t right.

What they’re saying: “My little cousin told me that the dude said, ‘Oh, come back and smoke some meth with me,’ you know, ‘have some drugs,’” Williams said. The family said this wasn’t the first time. Fort Worth police say officers had already been called to the 3700 block of Century Place on Friday morning after receiving reports of a man who was possibly under the influence soliciting children for sex. “We had already heard that a certain dude had been messing with other little kids around here,” Williams said. That’s when they say Renfro stepped in.
