Shakopee man charged in deadly shooting at Twin Cities Eid prayer service

A Shakopee, Minnesota, man is accused of shooting and killing 26-year-old Khalid Ibrahim Abdi outside of a Twin Cities Eid al-Adha prayer service on Wednesday. Mohamed Rage, 28, is facing one count of second-degree murder as well as an illegal weapons charge, according to the criminal complaint filed in Scott County on Monday. Charges say Abdi’s wife told police they were leaving the Canterbury Park Expo Center when they were approached by a man, later identified as Rage, saying that he wanted to fight Abdi, to which Abdi told Rage, “Please leave me alone, I don’t want to fight.”

Rage allegedly followed Abdi and his wife through the parking lot as they tried to leave. Abdi’s wife told investigators Rage was recording them with a cell phone and that her husband and Rage were physically fighting when another man tried to intervene, according to the complaint. Rage then took out a gun while Abdi tried to run and hide. Rage fired one to two shots before fleeing on foot. When officers arrived at the scene of the shooting, Abdi was conscious and kept saying, “I can’t breathe, please help me,” according to the complaint. He was taken to HCMC, where he later died. The medical examiner determined Abdi’s cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the torso.

Charges say Rage turned himself in at the Shakopee Police Department the day after the shooting. Court records show Rage was convicted of third-degree assault, which makes him ineligible to possess a firearm. Abdi was a union leader and field representative for AFSCME Council 5.  He was known for his “tenacious organizing spirit, his warm and inviting presence and his unyielding passion and drive to fight for the working-class and all historically marginalized communities,” said Bart Anderson, the union’s executive director.

Dog shoots woman with shotgun at Nebraska convenience store

funny adorable dog of beagle with harness

Police responding to reports of a shotgun blast at a convenience store sounds like the opening of countless American crime movies, but when cops in Nebraska responded to a recent such call they found an unusual culprit: a dog. Local TV station KNOP News 2 reported that police in the town of Scottsbluff were called out to a local store recently after reports of a blast involving a shotgun. Upon arrival they found a truck with blast damage in one of its doors and a woman who had been struck in the arm by a pellet from a shotgun.

However, investigation showed a canine cause behind the shooting when it was revealed the blast happened as the vehicle had pulled up to the store as a dog had been moving from one side of its back seat to another. Somehow, the dog had triggered the shotgun – which had a live round chambered – to fire, damaging the vehicle and striking a female passerby. The victim was taken to hospital though not seriously injured. It is illegal in Nebraska to drive with a loaded shotgun in your vehicle.

pyramid of the sun in teotihuacan under clear sky

A Canadian tourist was shot and killed Monday while visiting the Teotihuacán pyramids in Mexico, according to local authorities. Mexico’s security officials said a gunman opened fire at the popular tourist spot, killing a Canadian woman and injuring at least 13 people, including seven Americans. The shooter is believe to have taken his own life, the Security Cabinet said. Local prosecutors identified the gunman as Julio Cesar Jasso Ramirez, a Mexican national.

His cause of death has not yet been officially determined, Mexico’s attorney general’s office said. Mexico’s Security Cabinet said a firearm, a bladed weapon and ammunition were found at the scene. The gunman also had notes that appear to reference the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, local officials said. In a video posted on X, verified by CBS News, a man with a gun is seen pacing near the top of the Pyramid of the Moon. In another video, gunshots can be heard as visitors of the archeological site are seen walking at the bottom of the pyramid. “I have hostages and if you try to climb up I’ll kill them,” the gunman can be heard telling responding officers in another video taken by a witness.

Multiple people shot at Howe Community Park in Sacramento County

empty urban playground in early springtime

Deputies are investigating after multiple people were shot at a park in the Arden-Arcade area on Saturday evening, officials said. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said it received reports around 6:30 p.m. of individuals at Howe Community Park possibly carrying concealed weapons, followed by another call about a potential fight and people running from the area. Authorities said several hundred people had gathered at the park for what was described as an unauthorized event. Deputies were asked to clear the area and spent about 15 minutes making announcements over loudspeakers for people to leave.

That’s when deputies reported hearing between 20 and 25 gunshots, sending people running from the park. The sheriff’s office said first responders took four people to the hospital: a 24-year-old male, a 25-year-old male, a 21-year-old male, and a 23-year-old female. The sheriff’s office said three of them were shot, and one of them had a laceration from being grazed by a bullet.  They were all in stable condition, and none of them had injuries that were life-threatening, the sheriff’s office said. Investigators have not announced any arrests as of Sunday, but said the Solano County Sheriff’s Office did find a vehicle of interest in Fairfield. There were three occupants in the vehicle, a male and two females, who were detained and interviewed. The sheriff’s office said a gun was found in the vehicle, but they do not yet know if the three people were involved in the shooting or if they were and to what extent.
