Fisherman treads water for hours, miles off Cape Cod before rescue: “We were there for a reason”

A fisherman who treaded water for hours several miles off the coast of Cape Cod was rescued after he was spotted by another fishing crew. The three-man crew aboard the fishing boat Seel Jr. had been in the home stretch of a nine-day trip Saturday when they changed course to lend a hand.  “A distress call came over the radio about 12:15 more or less from the Western Edge stating to the Coast Guard that he was missing a crewmember,” Joao DaSilva recalled.  Coincidentally, the captain of Western Edge used to own the Seel crew’s boat. They traveled in that direction for about an hour. Then suddenly, about eight miles off of Truro, they could hear cries for help.  

“As I’m going up the ladder Phil’s like ‘it’s either a seal or somebody’s head. I see something bobbing in front of the boat about 200 feet.’ I turned forward and there’s the lime green shirt and this dude waving his hand and he’s bobbing in the water. I’m like ‘that’s him! He’s right there! He’s alive!’ We just started crying,” DaSilva said.  Just a few months ago, the Seel crew spotted an orca off of P-Town. The rare sight is believed to be a good omen. It’s been a tragic year for the fishing community, making this outcome especially meaningful.  “It’s been a horrific year. It started with Lily Jean up in Gloucester, which was seven lives that were lost to the ocean. Tommy Williams – big part of the waterfront down in Connecticut. We had the Yankee Rose that went down off of P-Town which was out of New Bedford; two guys got lost there. It’s nice to pull somebody out of the water alive,” he said.  The man they rescued Saturday had been treading water for two and a half hours without a life jacket. The Seel crew tossed him a life ring and other floatation devices, and alerted the Coast Guard who arrived with a rescue swimmer to pull him to safety.  The man was treated for hypothermia. DaSilva said he’s already seen him back at the dock. “Saturday was just special,” DaSilva said. “We were there for a reason you know what I mean? And it wasn’t to catch fish on that last tow.”

3 people rescued by Lake County, Illinois, Sheriff’s office after going missing in water near Lake Villa

The Lake County, Illinois, Sheriff’s office Marine Unit rescued three swimmers they said otherwise could have drowned in a lake near Lake Villa this weekend. Around 2:50 p.m. Saturday, sheriff’s deputies were on patrol in Petite Lake in unincorporated Lake Villa with personal watercraft provided through the Sea-Doo public safety loan program. The operator of a rental boat with several people celebrating a bachelor party onboard flagged down the deputies, said he was inexperienced in operating boats, and was looking for three friends who had gone missing in the water, the sheriff’s office said. A search commenced, and the three were found about 100 yards from the rental boat, the sheriff’s office said.

They were showing signs of distress and trying to stay afloat. Deputies got to all the people in the water before any of them slipped beneath the surface, and got them all to grab onto a rescue bar on the Sea-Doo personal watercraft the deputies were using. All were rescued and got back on the rental boat, the sheriff’s office said. Lake County Sheriff’s Office The boat operator was not under the influence, but alcohol was a factor in why the three people ended up off the boat, the sheriff’s office said.   “We have worked hard over the years to build and strengthen our Marine Unit, and this is exactly why.  Three young adults who had been drinking and were not wearing life jackets could have lost their lives,” Lake County Sheriff John D. Idleburg said in a news release. “Because our Marine Unit was on the water and ready to respond, and thanks to our valued partnership with Nielsen Enterprises, which provides the personal watercraft our deputies use, they were rescued before tragedy struck.”

Maryland deputies praised for rescuing child with autism from river

Body-worn camera video shows a deputy from the St. Mary’s County, Maryland, Sheriff’s Office rescuing a 9-year-old with autism from a river after he had been reported missing. Deputies found the child in a river in the Hollywood area on Friday, July 17. Deputy Matthew Camp went into the water, swam to the child, and brought him safely to shore.  The child was evaluated by medical personnel and was reunited with his family.  The St. Mary’s Sheriff’s Office, Maryland State Police, Maryland Natural Resources Police, Maryland State Police Aviation Command (Trooper 7), the St. Mary’s County Department of Emergency Services, and multiple local fire and EMS agencies assisted with the coordinated search.    “We are grateful to share that he is doing well,” the St. Mary’s Sheriff’s Office said. “This body-worn camera footage captures just a portion of the teamwork, professionalism, and courage displayed by first responders during this incident. We are grateful for the positive outcome and proud of the dedication shown by all who responded.”

Fort Collins pays $500,000 to settle lawsuit over wrongful Colorado DUI arrest of good Samaritan

A Nebraska man who stopped to help victims of a devastating motorcycle crash instead found himself handcuffed, jailed and accused of driving under the influence — despite repeatedly asking officers to administer a breath test that he believed would prove his innocence. Now, nearly five years later, the City of Fort Collins has paid Jesse Cunningham $500,000 to settle his lawsuit. Cunningham’s attorney says it is the largest settlement ever reached in a wrongful DUI arrest case, though no national database tracks such settlements. As part of the agreement, the city does not admit wrongdoing.

Fort Collins Police Chief Jeff Swoboda said on Monday, “..we chose to resolve this one (lawsuit) initiated by Cunningham to avoid the continued expense and disruption of ongoing litigation. The agreed- upon financial settlement is not an admission of liability or wrongdoing by the City and Police Services.” The settlement stems from Cunningham’s arrest following a serious motorcycle crash in Fort Collins in July of 2021. According to police body camera video, investigative reports and court records obtained by CBS News Colorado, Cunningham, who has medical training, rushed to assist the injured riders while he, his wife and their daughters were wrapping up a Colorado vacation. Cunningham provided first aid that he says helped save the life of one of the injured motorcyclists.

But as emergency responders secured the crash scene, attention shifted away from the victims and onto Cunningham. Fort Collins Police Officer Jason Haferman reported smelling alcohol on Cunningham. Cunningham told the officer he had consumed two beers several hours earlier. Within minutes, Cunningham went from good Samaritan to DUI suspect. “Just the audacity of how I felt the situation had turned. I was in shock. I couldn’t believe what was going on,” Cunningham told CBS Colorado. Repeated requests for a breath test Body camera video shows Cunningham repeatedly asking Officer Haferman to administer a breath test. “Can we do a breath test?” he asks.

Cunningham maintained that a breath test would quickly demonstrate he was not impaired. Later, after continuing the DUI investigation, Cunningham again questioned why he was not being allowed to take one. “So even if I pass a Breathalyzer I still get charged?” he asked Haferman. Instead, Haferman required Cunningham to perform roadside sobriety tests, which the officer concluded Cunningham failed. The breath test Cunningham repeatedly requested was never administered. Haferman arrested Cunningham on suspicion of DUI. Because Cunningham’s minor daughters were in the vehicle, he was also arrested on suspicion of child abuse. Haferman said he did not allow Cunningham to take a breath test because the Nebraska resident had a prescription for Adderall. Haferman expressed concern that Adderall could affect the breath test.

Cunningham had told the officer that he had not taken any Adderall recently because he had not brought the medication with him on vacation. He eventually took a blood test. Charges dismissed after laboratory results The consequences of the case extended well beyond the arrest. Cunningham said the arrest cost him a possible promotion at work. Child Protective Services opened an investigation into the child abuse allegation, visiting his home in Nebraska, interviewed his daughters, contacted their physician and Cunningham says he was required to submit to regular urinalysis testing while the criminal case was pending. Three months later, laboratory testing was complete. According to test records from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, blood tests from Cunningham showed no alcohol or drugs. Prosecutors dismissed the criminal case.

“Now I can with 100% surety say that I was innocent that evening,” said Cunningham. Although the criminal case ended, Cunningham said he could not simply move on. He filed a federal lawsuit against Officer Haferman and the City of Fort Collins, alleging that he was wrongfully arrested despite repeatedly requesting a breath test and despite laboratory evidence ultimately establishing that he had neither alcohol nor drugs in his system. “There’s certain things in life and certain things that I know you have to draw a line in the sand, and I need to stand up and do what’s right. This is one of those line-in-the-sand moments,” said Cunningham. A lasting impact Cunningham’s background made the experience particularly jarring. He served two combat tours in Iraq as a military police officer, later worked for the Federal Protective Service and now leads a nonprofit honoring members of the military and first responders, including police officers.

Despite that background, he says the arrest permanently changed his perception of law enforcement. “It just made me extremely cautious. I shouldn’t feel uneasy when law enforcement is around. Unfortunately, now I do.” Cunningham said no financial settlement can undo what his family endured. “It was me standing up for myself and defending myself against what I felt was extreme injustice.” Questions about DUI enforcement The Cunningham case was not the first DUI arrest by Officer Haferman that later unraveled after laboratory testing. A previous CBS News Colorado investigation documented nine DUI arrests in a single year in which people arrested by Haferman were later found through laboratory testing to have no alcohol or drugs in their systems. Haferman resigned from Fort Collins Police Services in 2022, one day before Police Chief Jeff Swoboda planned to terminate his employment.

Colorado law allows officers investigating impaired driving to request chemical testing after an arrest. Officers also commonly use preliminary roadside breath tests during DUI investigations, although those tests are generally considered investigative tools rather than evidentiary tests. Whether to administer a roadside breath test rests with the investigating officer under the circumstances of the stop. Cunningham’s lawyer, Sarah Schielke, was asked what she hoped other law enforcement agencies learned from this case and the settlement. “If you as a police agency say the more DUI arrests you make the better you’re doing at your job, then officers are going to have incentives to arrest innocent people,” said Schielke. She questioned the police Chief’s explanation for settling the case for $500,000. “Cities don’t pay half a million dollars to settle a case when they believe they made a good DUI arrest,” observed Schielke.

Colorado state records show Haferman is no longer certified as a peace officer in the state. Cunningham says he still respects law enforcement as a whole. But he says, “There’s no sense of justice when you’ve been victimized, no amount of money is going to make up for what my family went through.”

The First Responder Memorial of Wayne County near the intersection of Hines Drive and Haggerty Road in Plymouth Township, Michigan, honors the fallen men and women who died in the line of duty. The last name on the memorial wall is Melvindale Police Department Corporal Mohamed Said. “This is not only remembering Corporal Mohammed, but this is remembering all the fallen officers that we lost throughout the world,” Melvindale Police Department Corporal Mohamed Hachem said. Dozens of motorcycle riders and representatives from various police departments lined up on the road Saturday ahead of the second annual memorial motorcycle ride. “It’s very nice to see these people coming just for them, for the family. And nothing is going to bring him back, but this movement, it’s great for us.

And I hope it’s going to be continued for every year,” Dave Said, uncle of Mohamed Said, said. Earlier this summer, the man convicted of Mohamed Said’s murder was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. “It’s a little bit of a closure, but for the family and the and his coworkers and our city, it’s never going to go away. So, honoring him does help that,” Melvindale Police Chief Chris Egan said. It was justice for the family, friends and supporters at the event. “We are relieved that he’s behind bars. He’s not going to be out roaming the streets. He should not have been roaming the streets. And it just, it makes us feel better,” Hachem said. The memorial ride is also a fundraiser for the Mohamed Said Foundation. “If we want to send two people to a police academy, this will help out with that. I’m going to the honor guard school; it’s going to assist with that and it’s going to help,” Hachem said. All for a good cause, just like Mohamed Said would have wanted. “We’re enjoying, and remembering and everybody’s getting together. This is what Said wants, everybody to get together, laugh, smile,” Hachem said.

FIFA World Cup organizers estimate North Texas will host about four million people during the tournament, more than any other host city. Soccer fans from around the world bring their fandom to Dallas Stadium in Arlington for nine FIFA World Cup games. Law enforcement agencies are making sure people are safe while supporting their teams. That includes Arlington Police Lieutenant Ja’Nae McGee. “I joined the SWAT team in 2022, and from there, it was preparation for FIFA,” McGee said. Lt. McGee is the only female commander leading a SWAT team among the 16 FIFA host cities.

“The reality is being a female in law enforcement is very different than being a male, and as long as we create that sisterhood and that bond with one another, I think it carries on through generations,” McGee said. Lt. McGee decided to go into law enforcement after seeing her cousin work as an officer for the Arlington Police Department. The World Cup assignment is perfect for her; she played soccer in high school and in college. She leads 45 officers on her team and ensures the SWAT unit has everything needed to be prepared for emergencies. “We needed armor, and we need additional resources for tactical operations,” McGee said. Part of the preparation included additional training. “We came up with a big training for the Metro that was spearheaded by Arlington FD, and that was a simulation of a huge drone attack,” McGee said. “It showed us where we need to work on and how we need to work on things.” The Arlington Police Department partners with other agencies for the World Cup.

“We’ve relied heavily on our federal partners, which include the FBI and DPS, and they help us out at the games as a reaction team for outside and interior support when we’re inside the stadium. Then we also rely on Mansfield, who covers us in our absence from the city,” McGee said. France takes on Spain at Dallas Stadium for a semi-final match on Tuesday, July 14. Lt. McGee assured her team is ready. “We get up early, we bring the team in, we get briefed, everyone gets into positions, and then it’s more of we’re here for presence and assistance, and everyone’s having a good time,” McGee said. The mother of a seven-year-old girl hopes to be a role model for other young women while protecting fans from any potential danger.

Judge stops Philadelphia from enforcing ban against federal law enforcement officers wearing masks

A federal judge ruled on Thursday to block Philadelphia from enforcing a ban on federal officers wearing masks while they are on duty.  This temporary ruling was in response to a lawsuit filed against the city by the Department of Justice, which argued that the ordinance was a “blatantly unconstitutional” effort to regulate the conduct of federal agents and would “endanger officers and reduce operational effectiveness,” according to The Hill.  Federal Judge Chad Kenney ruled that the DOJ was likely to succeed in its challenge, and thus barred Philadelphia from implementing or enforcing the law against federal agencies and officers during the period that legal proceedings play out.

“When the Philadelphia City Council voted to pass Bill No. 260060 … it attempted to sidestep the Constitution’s clear mandate and disregarded this fundamental principle of law that has informed American jurisprudence for over 200 years,” the judge wrote in the 30-page order.  The “Constitution’s clear mandate” he was referring to is the Constitution’s Supremacy Clause.   “Today, the court blocked Philadelphia’s unlawful attempt to regulate federal law enforcement,” a DOJ spokesperson told The Hill in a statement. “The Department of Justice will keep fighting jurisdictions that try to obstruct President Trump’s immigration enforcement with policies that endanger agents and public safety.”

Swatting call prompts lockdown at medical center in western Wisconsin

Rice Lake, Wisconsin, police officers are investigating after a swatting incident at the Marshfield Medical Center Thursday afternoon.  Officials say the medical center received a phone call around 2 p.m., stating that two men were enroute to shoot up the hospital. Officers from the Red Lake Police Department and the Barron County Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene and secured the medical center.  Officials interviewed the staff and learned that the caller disguised their voice.

The caller also became upset with staff over the phone and hung up, according to police. No other threatening phone calls were made to the medical center.  While the medical center was on lock-down, officials learned that similar threats were at other places around Wisconsin.  Officials ended the lockdown around 4:15 p.m. and cleared the medical center. Officials say that early in the investigation they were able to determine this was a swatting call. No one was injured during the incident.

Police are asking for the public’s help to identify and locate two suspects wanted for assaulting an elderly man while riding a bus on the Upper West Side earlier this month. What we know: On June 5, a 73-year-old man was onboard an M104 MTA bus near Broadway and West 92nd Street when a verbal dispute broke out with two suspects. Police say the suspects punched the victim in the head and body before stabbing him in the shoulder. The suspects then fled in an unknown direction, while the victim was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. What we don’t know: The identities of the suspects are still unknown. They are wanted for elderly assault. What you can do: Anyone with information is asked to contact the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline.

Detective Spends Months Searching for Stolen Dementia Patient’s Ring–Finds it in a Pawnshop Miles Away

Going from a small town to the big city, a police detective went far beyond the call of duty to retrieve a woman’s stolen wedding ring. In LeRoy, New York, an elderly nursing home resident suffering from dementia—unable to care or speak for herself—had a wedding ring stolen from her hand. The theft was noticed by the victim’s family, who reported it to police after realizing the ring was missing, according to a statement from the LeRoy Police Department. Enter Kaden Vangalio, a police detective whose outstanding diligence and persistence resulted in getting the valuable heirloom back—after months of dead-end investigations. During those months, Vangalio conducted interviews and database checks with no immediate leads.

The case eventually brought him to Buffalo, the nearest major city, where he went from pawn shop to pawn shop looking for the stolen wedding ring himself. His persistence paid off when he located the victim’s ring at a Buffalo pawn shop, where he was able to secure both the ring and the bill of sale with the signature of the suspect, who is now charged with larceny for taking the victim’s ring while working at the nursing home. “During the investigation, Clark was evasive and avoided contact with investigators for months,” the department wrote. “Through persistent follow-up and continued investigative work, she ultimately turned herself in to face the charges.” “This may not be the crime of the century, but you cannot put a price on the sentimental value of a wedding ring. We are proud to help bring closure to this family and grateful for the excellent work of Detective Vangalio in making that happen,.”

5 police officers shot dead in cartel-plagued part of Mexico as World Cup kicks off

Five Mexican police officers were shot dead and five others wounded Wednesday in violence-hit Michoacan state on the eve of the World Cup opener in Mexico City, local authorities said. The officers were attacked by unknown assailants in an Indigenous region of the western state, which is plagued by cartel violence, the state government reported. The pickup truck they were traveling in was riddled with bullet holes, according to images obtained by AFP. In a social media post, the Moriela Police Department identified the slain officers as Porfirio Rodriguez Briseno, Brandon Josue Zamora Torres, Francisco Javier Otero Damas, Jonatan Mondragon Servin and  Mateo Valdez Abarca.

Jose Pablo Alarcon Olemdo, the city’s former police chief, extended his condolences the victims’ families and friends. “The criminals responsible for this attack must be arrested and punished with the full weight of the law,” he wrote on social media. The attack took place in the municipality of Nahuatzen, a region inhabited by the Purepecha people where the powerful New Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) operates. In May, the brazen murder of a small-city mayor, allegedly by the CJNG, prompted angry protests targeting symbols of the state, which many residents accused of failing to combat spiraling violence.

Michoacan’s capital Morelia is situated around 300 kilometers from both Mexico City and fellow World Cup host city Guadalajara. The state’s security department said police were searching for the perpetrators of Wednesday’s attack. Mexico’s government insists that there is no security threat to visiting World Cup fans. Mexico is co-hosting the tournament with Canada and the United States. The U.S. Embassy said this week that because safety risks in Mexico can “vary greatly by region,” each Mexican state has been given its own travel advisory by the U.S. State Department.

In late April,  the Mexican military captured one of the CJNG’s top leaders in the northwest of the country, two months after the cartel’s leader was killed. Audias Flores Silva, also known as “El Jardinero,” or The Gardener, was seen as a possible successor to the killed leader and the United States had a $5 million reward out for information leading to his arrest. Flores Silva was seen as a possible successor to Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, or “El Mencho,” who was killed in a dramatic military operation in February. The killing of “El Mencho” led to a surge of cartel violence with a wave of attacks on businesses by cartel gunmen, vehicle burnings and road blockades that killed more than 70 people, including 25 National Guard members.

Seven Jailed over Violent Protests Following Murder of Handcuffed Nowak

A total of seven men have now been sentenced to prison for their roles in the violent protests that broke out in Southampton last week in the wake of the killing of Henry Nowak. Earlier this month, footage was released by the Hampshire Constabulary documenting some of the final moments in the life of 18-year-old Henry Nowak, who was murdered with a traditional Sikh blade by 23-year-old Vikrum Digwa. The footage, which was published in the wake of the murder trial, showed Nowak on the ground, meekly telling police officers that he could not breathe and that he had been stabbed.

Incredulous after hearing false accusations that Nowak had been racially abusive towards Digwa, an officer infamously replied, “I don’t think you have, mate”, to Nowak’s insistence that he had been stabbed. Nowak lost consciousness and died moments later. The incident confirmed what many in Britain believe to be a system of “two-tier” justice in which ethnic and religious minorities are given preferential treatment over their native white counterparts and sparked outrage locally in Southampton. The following day after the footage was released, hundreds gathered outside the Southampton Central Police Station to protest the alleged role the police played in the death of the local student. As the evening wore on, clashes broke out between demonstrators and officers in riot gear deployed to the scene, who came under assault with bricks, bins, and other makeshift missiles. Following a string of hearings on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Southampton Crown Court, seven men were sentenced to prison over their role in the riots, the BBC reported.

Nearly 90 people were arrested after dozens of sports cars were towed from the Los Angeles River in the Cypress Park neighborhood on Sunday evening.  LAPD officers said that they, along with personnel from other law enforcement agencies, swarmed the area at around 6 p.m. upon learning of the gathering. Aerial footage from around 7:20 p.m. showed a large gathering of vehicles in the riverbed near San Fernando Road.  Other vehicles were seen being driven from the riverbed in a single-file line, where some were loaded onto tow trucks. CBS LA Drivers who had gathered in the area told CBS LA that they were there for a car meetup, and that just over 100 vehicles were there when LAPD officers unexpectedly arrived to tell them they were trespassing.

“There’s a trespassing sign that’s really small, you can’t read it,” said Alexander Pimienta, one of the many drivers who were in attendance at the gathering. “We weren’t doing anything illegal, we weren’t doing anything stupid. … They towed my motorcycle, they’re towing trucks, they’re towing over 50 cars.”  Other video from the scene showed officers handing out what appeared to be citations or tickets, while some of the drivers were put in handcuffs. On Tuesday, LAPD officials told CBS LA that two people were arrested for felonies while 84 others were arrested for misdemeanors. They had 72 cars impounded on Sunday.

Police arrested 25 people and recovered 52 chickens while breaking up an active cockfight in Delaware County over the weekend. Law enforcement acted on a tip received last week about a cockfight scheduled for Saturday in the 500 block of Franklin Street in Chester, the Pennsylvania SPCA said in a news release Monday. Multiple agencies executed a search warrant Saturday night and interrupted the cockfight in progress. They arrested 25 people, rescued 52 live birds and found three dead roosters. The live birds were taken to the PSPCA headquarters in Philadelphia for treatment.

They will remain in PSPCA custody pending their surrender or adjudication of the court case, according to the animal shelter. “Cockfighting is one of the most brutal forms of animal cruelty,” Nicole Wilson, PSPCA director of animal law enforcement and shelter operations, said in a statement. “These birds are forced to fight to near death one cut at a time, suffering devastating injuries in the process.”   Cockfighting is illegal in all 50 states and a felony in 42 states, including Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia. The PSPCA said the investigation remains ongoing and anyone with information should contact its hotline at 866-601-SPCA.

A sweeping two‑month child‑exploitation crackdown across Texas has led to 276 arrests and the rescue of 89 children, federal and local authorities announced this week. Officials called Operation Soteria Shield one of the state’s largest coordinated efforts to combat online predators. The initiative, led by FBI Dallas and dozens of Texas law enforcement agencies, ran from March to April 2026. Those arrested face charges ranging from possession, distribution, and production of child sexual abuse material to online solicitation, trafficking, and sexual assault. The 89 rescued children include previously unidentified victims.  The crackdown brought together 91 agencies and 197 personnel, including investigators, analysts, digital‑forensics specialists, prosecutors, and child‑advocacy partners.  

Targeting online child exploitation Operation Soteria Shield focused on identifying people who target children across social media, messaging apps, and other online platforms. Investigators pursued suspects accused of creating, sharing, or possessing child sexual abuse material, soliciting minors online, trafficking children, committing sexual assault, and other forms of exploitation. Officials said the cases remain active and additional charges are likely as forensic reviews continue. The effort was announced by the FBI Dallas’ North Texas Child Exploitation Task Force and the North Texas Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Leaders stress trauma and teamwork Leaders from the FBI and the police departments of Dallas, Plano, Wylie, Garland, and Fort Worth emphasized the importance of interagency cooperation and the lasting trauma these crimes inflict on victims. “This would not have been successful without the resolve of each participating agency,” said FBI Dallas Special Agent in Charge R. Joseph Rothrock. “These are not victimless crimes,” Dallas Police Chief Daniel C. Comeaux said.

“They leave lasting trauma on children and families. I am incredibly proud of the work of our investigators and every agency partner who helped make this operation successful.” “Every child deserves to grow up safe, protected, and free from exploitation,” Plano Police Chief Ed Drain said. “This operation reflects our shared commitment to defend children wherever abuse occurs, whether that is in a home, on a device or through an online platform. The work done by these investigators has changed lives.”

Police responding to reports of a shotgun blast at a convenience store sounds like the opening of countless American crime movies, but when cops in Nebraska responded to a recent such call they found an unusual culprit: a dog. Local TV station KNOP News 2 reported that police in the town of Scottsbluff were called out to a local store recently after reports of a blast involving a shotgun. Upon arrival they found a truck with blast damage in one of its doors and a woman who had been struck in the arm by a pellet from a shotgun.

However, investigation showed a canine cause behind the shooting when it was revealed the blast happened as the vehicle had pulled up to the store as a dog had been moving from one side of its back seat to another. Somehow, the dog had triggered the shotgun – which had a live round chambered – to fire, damaging the vehicle and striking a female passerby. The victim was taken to hospital though not seriously injured. It is illegal in Nebraska to drive with a loaded shotgun in your vehicle.

A Chester police officer is expected to recover after authorities say he was violently attacked Tuesday morning while responding to a reported domestic burglary. According to the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office, Officer Michael Tierney approached a man connected to a reported burglary near Meadow Lane and West 9th Street in Chester when the suspect suddenly attacked the officer. “It was a really scary incident, and it could’ve been a whole lot worse,” Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse said. Investigators said Tierney attempted to calmly speak with the suspect on the sidewalk before the encounter turned violent. “There was no real provocation.

Officer Tierney was acting in nothing but a professional manner,” Rouse said. Authorities identified the suspect as Lawrence Crews. Prosecutors said Crews repeatedly punched Tierney, wrestled him to the ground and struggled for control of the officer’s Taser. “He was in effect pistol-whipped with his own Taser as a struggle ensued,” Rouse said. “Eventually, he was able to get the suspect, Mr. Crews, off of him.” Additional officers later took Crews into custody. Tierney was rushed to ChristianaCare Wilmington Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware. Officials said Tierney suffered cuts to his face and head and may have sustained a concussion, but he is expected to make a full recovery. “He was banged up, he was shaken up, it was wild, and it was unprovoked,” Rouse said. Prosecutors said Crews may have been suffering a health crisis at the time of the incident, though officials stressed there was no justification for assaulting a police officer.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara resigns after internal probe into his conduct, mayor says

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara has resigned following an internal investigation into his conduct, the mayor announced Tuesday evening.  In a press conference, Mayor Jacob Frey said Assistant Police Chief Katie Blackwell is the acting police chief effective immediately.  In a written reprimand to the police chief, Frey said an investigation into O’Hara’s behavior found he interfered with a prior investigation that included allegations he had “engaged in sexual intimate relationships” with city employees. 

Frey said the investigation substantiated that O’Hara “knowingly and intentionally” deleted a contact card for a city employee from his city-issued cell phone during the original investigation, “in an attempt to shield that evidence” of his connection to the employee from investigators.  “Although the investigators have concluded that the underlying allegations from the original investigation remain not substantiated, your interference with the investigation risked the integrity of the investigation and constitutes a significant breach of trust,” Frey’s reprimand to the chief said.  Earlier this month, O’Hara was re-nominated as police chief by Frey, with the mayor saying, “he’s the right leader for this moment.”

A sword-wielding man in Boston attacked a mental health clinician on Saturday after speaking with the worker — who was sent to assist police — for about 40 minutes through a locked door. The man called 911, claiming that four armed people were trying to harm him. When police officers arrived, they found him behind a locked door and sent a clinician, who spoke with him for nearly 45 minutes while the door remained closed, CBS News reported Monday. However, as soon as the man opened the door at first responders’ urging, he brandished a sword, swiftly knocked the mental health worker to the ground, and stabbed one of the officers in the arm.
