New Year; a time for Reflection

As the New Year approaches, we find ourselves reflecting on the past year and setting goals for the year ahead. For Christians, this can also be a time to consider what the Bible has to say about the New Year and how we can approach it in a way that is pleasing to God.

The Bible does not specifically mention the New Year as we know it today, as the concept of a new year beginning on January 1st is a tradition that dates back to the ancient Romans. However, the Bible does speak about the importance of new beginnings and the hope that comes with them.

In the Old Testament, the Israelites celebrated the new year with the festival of Rosh Hashanah, (Numbers 29:1-6) which marked the beginning of the civil year. Rosh Hashanah is still celebrated by Jewish people today, and it is a time of reflection and repentance. The festival is seen as a time to start anew and make right any wrongs that have been committed in the past.

The New Testament also emphasizes the importance of new beginnings. In 2 Corinthians 5:17, Paul writes, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” This verse highlights the transformative power of faith in Jesus, who offers us the opportunity to start anew and become a new creation.

As Christians, the New Year can be a time for us to rededicate ourselves to following Jesus and living out our faith. This might involve setting spiritual goals, such as reading the Bible more, praying more consistently, or getting more involved in a church community. 2 Chronicles 7:14

The New Year can also be a time to focus on becoming more like Jesus in our everyday lives. This might involve working on becoming more patient, kind, or selfless. It could also involve serving others and showing God’s love to those around us. John 13:15, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Titus 2:12

In addition to setting spiritual goals, the New Year can also be a time to set personal goals related to our health, relationships, careers, or other areas of life. The Bible encourages us to work towards becoming the best version of ourselves, Colossians 3:9-10, and setting goals can be a helpful way to do this.

However, it’s important to remember that our ultimate goal should be to glorify God, not just to achieve personal success or happiness. Colossians 3:23-24 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

As we approach the New Year, it can be helpful to spend time in prayer, asking God to guide us as we set goals and make plans for the year ahead. We can also ask for His strength and wisdom as we strive to follow Him and live out our faith.

The New Year is a time of hope and new beginnings, and as Christians, we can approach it with a sense of excitement and anticipation, knowing that God is with us and has a plan for our lives. Jeremiah 29:11 Let’s start the New Year off right by seeking God’s guidance and working towards becoming the best versions of ourselves, all for His glory.

Dear Heavenly Father, guide me through this new year helping me to always consider what You want. Guide every step I take, every thought I have, and every path I choose. In Jesus Name Amen

So with everything that’s going on right now we look around and sometimes it makes us doubt that God has control of everything that’s going on. We’ve been told in the Bible that the devil was given control over this world, 2 Corinthians 4:4, likewise we were given free will to choose which way we are going to do, Joshua 24:15. As we look around we see governments that are controlling people and they’re oppressing their people.

We see friends and family that are divided against each other. When we look at it the one thing that we need to remember is no matter what happens inevitably those institutions that are above us, government, state leaders, you name it will always look out for themselves. No matter how bad it seems we need to always make sure that we’re looking out for each other. Those around us, our family, our friends, you know the ones that we’ve always known and that have always known us.

With that statement we need to remember the following Bible verses from Psalms: You have rebuked the nations. You have destroyed the wicked. You have blotted out their name forever and ever. The enemy is overtaken by endless ruin. The very memory of the cities which you have overthrown has perished. But Yahweh reigns forever. He has prepared his throne for judgment. He will judge the world in righteousness. He will administer judgment to the peoples in uprightness. Yahweh will also be a high tower for the oppressed; a high tower in times of trouble. Those who know your name will put their trust in you, for you, Yahweh, have not forsaken those who seek you. Psalm 9:5-10 WEB

Right now it’s so important to pay attention. Our morals are being questioned, our children are being attacked, and we are being told that we’re the ones that aren’t good. We have been told in the Bible that there will be a time were evil is good and good as evil, Isaiah 5:20. We are told that if we don’t agree with everything that’s going on within the world right now that we’re the ones that are evil. We are told that Jesus Christ himself would’ve supported all of the evil that we have surrounding us right now.

Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you. Revelation 3:3 ESV

Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the Lord’s work, because you know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. 1 Corinthians 15:58 WEB

Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. Revelation 2:5 ESV

If you read the Bible you’ll know that that view point is completely wrong, it is not what God told us. In fact the New Testament in some aspects holds us even more accountable than it ever has before. In the Old Testament we were given the 10 Commandments in the New Testament they added more to it, now if we even look at somebody the wrong way we have committed a sin. This is why it is so important to know exactly what the Bible says and not what somebody thinks the Bible says. It is so important right now to make sure that you’re reading the Bible and knowing exactly what it says I cannot say that enough. We have to pay attention right now more than ever before, Romans 13:11-12, we need to make sure we know exactly what God wants us to do. There are so many things that surround us right now that will make us doubt exactly what he said if we don’t know what the Bible says.

When everything seems like it is going wrong as human beings we tend to look for things to comfort us that aren’t always our best decisions of comfort. Sometimes we will look to the wrong people for comfort. Some of us will look to drugs, alcohol, and relationships. Some of these things are real bad for us, mentally and health wise. Sometimes the wrong people will tell us what we want to hear and not what we should hear. Sometimes they do it out of the best of intentions because they want you to feel better because they’re good friends.

But that doesn’t always mean it’s right, or what God wants you to do. I by no means I’m sitting here pointing the finger and saying I am better than anybody else. I’ve done the drugs, I’ve drank the alcohol, I’ve tried to find comfort in friends that weren’t appropriate. Sometimes it makes me wonder why God forgives me or has taken care of me as much as He has. I have a Multiple Sclerosis.

The MS has been a learning experience, I was deaf, blind, and couldn’t walk for a while; God’s taken me through all of this. You would think that that would cement a relationship with God, it has, but there are days I still question it. I still think I can do it better even though He has done so much for me. It’s human nature, not an excuse and not the best but it is part of what makes us human. God tells us over and over again to not to be afraid, not to be anxious, and to always depend on Him.

But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient. Matthew 6:33-34 WEB

When looking around we can see all of the misinformation, the oppression, and any other bad choice that seems to make us doubt. We need to remember the things that we’ve been told in the Old Testament and how His people were treated throughout history. What’s going on right now is not new, human beings seem to repeat themselves and do the same thing over and over and over again. Something I say a lot is that 2000 years ago they were riding in chariots, today we’re driving SUV’s but we’re still dealing with the same issues we have always done. This is why it’s so important to understand the Bible verse that is next don’t forget so you don’t repeat:

Remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose,’ Isaiah 46:9-10 ESV

Make Way

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Zechariah 9:9 ESV The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! “Fear not, daughter of Zion;

His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.” John 12:12-19 ESV

We know that in just a few days the leaders in Jerusalem will crucify Jesus because they felt threatened, they were afraid that they would loose their power. We all can learn a few things from what happened to Jesus, these leaders were blinded by their personal asperations, ignoring what they had in front of them. Jesus loves us so much that He even died for those that had Him nailed to the cross. Is there “stuff” that holds you back from seeing what is in front of you? It could be in the way of your family, friends, and even your salvation. We need to make sure that our “stuff” is in order so that it does not become a distraction from everything that is important. Jesus is our guide and will take us through turmoil, anxiety, and distractions. God has given us a owners manual that will show us how to deal with all the interference, sometimes it is like listening to an AM radio and all you can hear is static. As humans we seem to repeat history over and over again and in the bible, the entire bible, we are shown how to navigate the sometimes rough roads we have ahead.

Celebration Time

The palm-tree has ever been an emblem of victory and triumph; Cicero calls one that had won many prizes plurimarum palmarum homo – a man of many palms. Christ was now by his death to conquer principalities and powers, and therefore it was fit that he should have the victor’s palm borne before him; though he was but girding on the harness, yet he could boast as though he had put it off. We look around us day in and day out, children being murdered, molested, being used as toys for people with illicit intent. There are people so far out of their minds trying to self-medicate themselves so they do not feel the pain they have endured. People around the world are being persecuted for the way they are and the way that they believe.  We have political entities that are telling us that the way we believe and think are wrong, or that we said something that was inappropriate. If we smile at someone it could be taken the wrong way, a sexual advance, maybe you’re just racist, not implying that you are just sharing the love that was given us. The surroundings that we have to put up with on a daily basis seem to be overwhelming. One thing I always remember 1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. In this bible verse we can break it down into a few different parts the love of money, being content, and that He is there for you.

To begin with, money, we ask what did Jesus say?    Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. Jesus told us that loving money is like having another master that we devote our lives to. It does not say that are not supposed to work, it says quite the opposite. In Romans 13:7 Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed. We are told that we are to pay our taxes, pay those we owe and respect and honor those that are due respect and honor. If we have to pay taxes and our debts that obviously means that having a job and making money is not evil. It is when we revere money over everything else is when it becomes the problem.  For example; your spouse and children are expecting you home for an amazing night with the family however you stay to make some extra money so you cancel and work a few extra hours. You have now put money before your family, that is not saying that making a few extra dollars is evil, but if you do not have to work be content with what God has given you. It is when we put the search for that extra dollar over everything else in our life including family, ourselves and worst God. This is when we become entangled with a love for money over the love of everything else. In the bible it says to love your neighbor: Luke 10:27 And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” it does not say love your money. So when we love money so much we are breaking one of His commandments, Exodus 20:3 “You shall have no other gods before me.” And do not forget what Jesus said above in Luke 10:27 love Him with everything inside and out. We must remember that even 2000 years ago there were those that tried to teach that following Jesus was not for financial gain in 1 Timothy 6: 4-5 They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain. In our society today we have a few that still try to teach this financial doctrine/theology we are reminded  in 1 Timothy 6: 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. We need to remember to be happy with what we have, just be content.

Furthermore, being content with what we have is a virtue we should all work to attain. When we examine contentment we see there is hope: 2 Corinthians 12:10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. So what is being content? The Merriam dictionary defines being content as:  freedom from worry or restlessness :  peaceful satisfaction. Paul formally known as Saul left his life of Jewish servitude and comfort: Acts 22:3 “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city. I studied under Gamaliel and was thoroughly trained in the law of our ancestors. I was just as zealous for God as any of you are today”. The bible says Gamaliel was a teacher Acts 5:34 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, who was honored by all the people.  At that time in history not just anybody would receive teaching except for a select few. Paul left this life and told people to be happy with what you have: Philippians 4:11-13 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength. When we want what others have and are not satisfied it is call coveting. Exodus 20:17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” We are reminded by Paul that we should watch so that we do not get snared into the deception that money makes everything better and all your worries disappear. Truth is; even the rich worry and want more, the want of money can turn into a state of mind that devours your entire being. 2 Timothy 6:6-10 But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Just be content with what you have and look to him for hope know that He is there for you: 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.

            Third, when we do not forsake Him He will not forsake us. The definition of forsake is: to renounce or turn away from entirely. God through Jesus Christ has given us the ultimate sacrifice, salvation through the blood of His Son. Matthew 1:21 “and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” We are shown that through this sacrifice that He has not and will not turn away from us. With this bible verse Hebrews 13:5 I will not leave you or forsake you; we are told throughout the entire bible and have been reassured that He is there and will take care of us. 2000 years ago the Israelite’s where sacrificing animals to cover the sins that they had committed even those people that were “good people;” there has only been one human on this earth who was perfect and free of sin, his name Jesus. Jesus was sent as a sacrifice to cover those sins that through the law could never be covered no matter how many sacrifices that were given. Hebrews 9: 11-14 But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation. He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God! From the beginning to the end of the bible we have been guaranteed that God is there to take care of us. From Genesis 28:15 15 I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” And as we near the end of the bible in the final chapter we are reminded once again that He has and always will have or back Revelation 1:17-18 “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.

In conclusion; we have a hope that it will get better because we know the gift that was given us through Jesus Christ. John 3:16-18 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned. We have been given this gift to comfort us letting us know that God has told us from the beginning that He is there for us, has not forgotten us and will be here for all eternity wanting His people to be with Him in heaven. Luke 19:10 “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
