Denver still in line for rain with heaviest downpours locked on southeastern Colorado

The Denver metro area is expected to see beneficial rain through the day on Wednesday. But, the updated forecast totals will be lower than originally anticipated as the track of September storm set up has shifted farther south. As a result, the Denver Metro area and surrounding suburbs have been taken out of the Flood Watch for this week. Most of the metro area has a chance at anywhere from one-tenth of an inch to just under one-half inch during the rain event. 

The bulls-eye for heavier rainfall and potential flooding is locked into southern Colorado and portions of the eastern plains, where a Flood Watch remains in effect until early Thursday morning. Some of those areas could see 2 to 5 inches of rainfall, with isolated spots even higher than that. The moisture packed system is being fueled by several atmospheric ingredients merging together. The remnants of once-hurricane Polo are being pushed into the southern Rockies by an upper level trough moving across Arizona.

Thousands lose power in Massachusetts as nor’easter brings down trees and wires

The September nor’easter is leaving its mark across the state, with several reports of trees and wires down in multiple communities.  A large tree completely uprooted on Lucy Street in Stoneham around 3 a.m. Sunday morning.  The homeowner told WBZ-TV he heard a huge crash and left a mess in his backyard. The tree grazed a back window, luckily leaving most of the damage outside his house.  But some homeowners weren’t as fortunate, like residents on 4th Street in Medford.

Another massive tree uprooted, crashing down on several parked cars and damaging one home. Crews were on the scene restoring power to the neighborhood after more than 12 hours in the dark. But the cleanup is far from over, as wires, branches and leaves are still scattered across the roadway. And a big tree still sits in the back of a pickup truck.  In Revere, more than 800 residents lost power when a driver lost control of her car and crashed into a utility pole on Mountain Avenue Sunday morning, police said.  Crews are still working to clean up the damage left behind, repairing the pole and getting lights turned back on. But working to restore power lines in this kind of storm isn’t always easy.

“This one it’s really hard because you have to wait for it to become safe before we can put a bucket in the air, and that threshold is 35 mph. So, if you’re getting 50 mph winds, you’re going to have to wait it out before we can actually get to it,” National Grid Vice President of Electric Operations Sean Vacher told WBZ-TV.  Vacher said they have 400 crews stationed across the state. Before the storm, they expected the worst of the outages to be along the coast and the islands, but the impact has been widespread.  “It seemed to migrate north and away from the coast so Merrimack Valley got hit pretty good and then western Massachusetts even,” Vacher said. “So out toward the Berkshires we’re seeing it, so it’s been fairly even across the board.” 

As of Sunday afternoon, National Grid had restored power to more than 80,000 customers, but the storm isn’t done yet. They’re hoping to have power back on for all of their customers by Monday night.  Roughly 1,000 customers were without power across the state as of Sunday at 7 p.m., according to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) outage map.

Nine days after the storm that was to blame for it all, tens of thousands of people yet again woke up without power in Northwest Indiana on Thursday. In Gary, NIPSCO said the power won’t be back on until next week. Things really came to a boiling point for some people in Gary in the last 24 hours after NIPSCO released estimated power restoration times for different areas across Northwest Indiana, but initially left Gary off the list. The latest update on the NIPSCO website as of Thursday morning indicated that Gary was set to get power back on Tuesday. Residents were frustrated after already having been without power for more than a week. “That’s ridiculous. It’s unacceptable.

They need to do better,” said Bridget Sanders. “We are being left behind every time something goes on. Gary is left behind.  We are the last ones on the totem pole to get anything done.” Utility crews have been working around the clock to repair the nearly 300 power poles left damaged in recent storms. Meanwhile, food critic and popular social media personality Keith Lee said he is coming to Gary this weekend as part of his Midwest food tour. He posted to social media about the situation with the power, saying he hopes to help deliver some meals or supplies for people in need. Several restaurants along Broadway in Gary have been able to reopen this week, with others hoping to reopen by later Thursday or Friday. Public schools in Gary will remain closed through this week.

Officials from the Gary Community School Corporation said they will have a better sense of a return date over the weekend. Meantime, they are beginning repairs and preparing for when students can return.

Storms possible on Thursday with warm temperatures remaining in Southeast Michigan

Temperatures remain warmer on Thursday, bringing another chance at strong to severe storms later in the day. It’s important to note that this risk is much lower than last week, but with some heavy rain and gusty winds, chances are all the same. A marginal risk (1 out of 5) from the Storm Prediction Center covers Southeast Michigan for the latter part of the day. Storms will begin to pop in the afternoon and into the evening hours. While rain will scatter through the area, actual stronger storms should be more isolated. Heavy downpours and gusty winds are the main concern for any cells that strengthen. The most likely area for storms at the moment appears to be mainly south of Interstate 69. Keep a close eye on the radar through the afternoon and early evening hours before our rain chances end.

It’s warm and muggy Tuesday morning, with most waking up to dry conditions. A few areas in Northeast Texas near Paris and Sulphur Springs have seen storms, with very isolated showers across other areas. A First Alert Weather Day has been issued for Tuesday afternoon due to the threat of strong-to-severe storms. There is a low-end level 1/5 risk for severe storms with heavy rain, damaging winds and some hail as the main threats. The timing of these storms will be between 3 and 9 p.m. The chance of rain is only 30%, so not everyone will see showers or storms.

Everyone will see the heat and humidity, with temperatures near the 100° mark and feel-like temperatures as high as 102°. There’s another chance of a few afternoon pop-up storms on Wednesday, although there is no severe weather risk issued. While there is no risk, these storms can still produce strong winds and heavy rain. By Thursday, DFW dries out and heats up, with the dry weather continuing into the first half of the weekend.  Better chances for isolated storms return Sunday and Monday.

Widespread flooding across Kentucky has left at least four dead Saturday, prompting dozens of rescues after heavy rains wiped out bridges, inundated roads and flooded homes, with more significant rainfall on the way. Search and rescue efforts have continued throughout the day. Gov. Andy Beshear confirmed one person died in Jackson County and three others died in Madison County, including a man and woman who officials said drowned in a home that was underwater. A few hours earlier, Beshear said one motorist was killed after being swept away by flash flooding.

The governor declared a state of emergency to deploy more resources while announcing six to seven inches of rain deluged some areas of the state. A second round of rainfall is expected in the evening, and the governor urged people to be cautious and avoid unnecessary driving. ⛈️ Get your forecast on CNN Weather for iPhone “When it gets dark, it’s going to get even worse. So please, do not drive after dark if you can avoid it,” Beshear said. The severe weather is the latest in a history of catastrophic flooding in Kentucky, including deadly flash floods in early 2025 when more than a month’s worth of rain deluged much of the state in less than 24 hours. Dozens of people in Kentucky were killed in 2022 when unprecedented flooding inundated houses and swept away some from their foundations.

Precautionary evacuations are underway in one part of Bullitt County, which has been hit particularly hard by Saturday’s flooding. Officials there are closely monitoring a dam. A portion of the embankment has experienced a landslide, but the dam is holding and there’s no indication of an “imminent failure,” county emergency management officials said. The Millon Church in Richmond appeared to have collapsed, a video showed. Earlier in the day, the church announced its Saturday service was canceled due to the storm, adding: “Praying everyone stays safe.” Photos provided by police in Richmond – about 30 miles south of Lexington – show officers blocking off flooded streets and checking on stranded vehicles almost entirely submerged by rising floodwaters.

In Richmond, the two people who died from suspected drowning were trapped in the basement of a flooded home, police said. The residence was already underwater when police and fire officials arrived at the scene and could not make contact with anyone inside, police said. Rescue teams were later able to make entry and found the bodies of a man and woman, the agency said. Major intersections in the city are flooded, Richmond Mayor Robert Blythe said. He has been receiving calls from residents concerned about their neighbors whose homes are filling with rising water, Blythe told CNN. Richmond, to a certain extent, had been “spared” tragic weather affecting the surrounding area in recent years, the mayor said. But now, he added, “It appears to be our turn.”

Elsewhere in Madison County, “significant roads” are under water, with five search and rescue teams on the ground, the governor said. Five counties, including Bullitt, Madison, Meade, Mercer and Spencer have declared a local state of emergency, the governor’s office said. CNN has contacted those five counties under a local state of emergency for further information about the effects of the flooding. At least 12 roads across the state are flooded and cannot be accessed, while numerous bridges in counties like Jessamine have been “entirely wiped out,” the governor said. Dozens of rescues have been made, Beshear said. The state’s emergency management, state police and swift water rescue teams are responding to emergency requests in local communities, he added. “We know we’ve already lost at least a handful of Kentuckians. I don’t want to lose anymore,” he said, adding the storms have become “much more severe than most would have thought.”

Thursday night’s tornado outbreak in the Chicago area continues a concerning trend of increasing tornado frequency in the Upper Midwest. With 140 tornadoes so far this year, Illinois leads the nation in tornado count for the third of the last four years. In a distant second place is Mississippi with 82 tornadoes this year, and Missouri comes in third with 62.  It’s the fourth year in a row that Illinois has surpassed 100 tornadoes. Illinois averages only 54 tornadoes per year, according to the Illinois State Climatologist’s Office.

As CBS News Chicago reported in February, we may be witnessing what climate researchers have long expected in a warming climate. As human activities add greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere, a warmer climate is making the traditional Tornado Alley in the Plains hotter and more arid. This change shifts the more favorable tornado ingredients eastward into the Midwest and Deep South, and leads to more tornadoes in Illinois. Thursday’s tornado outbreak comes during the typical peak of tornado activity in Illinois. Tornado frequency typically peaks between April and June in the Chicago area. It follows a very unusual early-season tornado outbreak on March 10 that brought a deadly EF-3 tornado to Kankakee and Newton counties.

Four days of extreme rain and landslides in the Indonesian island of Sumatra have pushed the world’s most endangered great apes even closer to extinction, says a study. Research suggests that 58 of less than 800 critically endangered Tapanuli orangutans, or around 7% of the total species, were killed as a result of the extreme weather event last November. Those are conservative figures, and do not take into account rain-induced canopy damage or reduced food availability, said the authors of the study published on Wednesday.

Cyclone Senyar ravaged Sumatra in late November, killing more than 1,000 people in Southeast Asia’s deadliest natural disaster for 2025. The study’s findings, said the authors, show that extreme rainfall events can directly threaten the survival of great ape populations. The damage to the island’s wildlife, however, has been harder to quantify. Wildlife experts and conservationists had previously observed that, in the wake of the storm, Tapanuli orangutan sightings had dissipated – fuelling speculation that the great apes may have been swept away by floods and landslides. Professor Erik Meijaard, managing director of Borneo Futures in Brunei and an author of the study published on Wednesday, had told the BBC in December that Cyclone Senyar had likely killed about 35 orangutans – a loss which he said would constitute “a major blow to the population”.

His more recent estimate of 58 deaths marks a significant uptick on that figure. Weeks after the cyclone, humanitarian workers told the BBC they found the carcass of what they believed to be a Tapanuli orangutan semi-buried amid debris of mud and logs in Pulo Pakkat village in central Tapanuli district. “I have seen several dead bodies of humans in the past few days but this was the first dead wildlife,” said Deckey Chandra, who was working with a humanitarian team in the area. “They used to come to this place to eat fruits. But now it seems to have become their graveyard.” Meijaard said he had seen photos of the dead orangutan, shared by Chandra. “What struck me is that all the flesh had been ripped off the face,” he said. “If a few hectares of forest comes down in massive landslides, even powerful orangutans are helpless and just get mangled.” “It must have been hellish in the forest at the time.”

Flooding could impact more than 88 million people across the middle of the country this week, forecasts show, as severe weather threatens multiple U.S. states in the Midwest and northern Plains.  About two dozen flash floods have been reported Monday across Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma, according to CBS News meteorologist Nikki Nolan. Flood watches remained in effect until Tuesday morning for large swaths of the Midwest, including much of Missouri and Illinois, with some extending farther south through Tennessee and into northern Alabama and Georgia.

The watches, which are issued when weather conditions mean flooding is possible but not necessarily guaranteed, affect about 20 million people. The severe weather threat to major cities in Kansas, like Topeka and Salina, is expected to last through Thursday, according to NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center. Nikki Nolan/CBS News Storms across the central Plains could also potentially produce “very large hail, severe wind gusts, and a few tornadoes,” while heavy rain posed risks of flash flooding across sections of the Mississippi, Tennessee and Ohio Valleys, the National Weather Service said. Forecasters have predicted rainfall of up to 8 inches in some areas. Forecasters also warned that excessive rain over parts of Tennessee and Alabama would continue to carry the potential for “considerable and life-threatening flooding” through Monday evening, after as much as 9 inches of rain drenched the region on Sunday.

Rushing water triggered a flash flood emergency near Huntsville, Alabama, where video footage captured vehicles partially submerged on a street. The flooding left some drivers stranded. This week’s storms come on the heels of others that already brought heavy rain and strong winds to parts of the country over the weekend, leading to at least one death in New York City. In Texas’ Milam County, about an hour outside of Austin, torrential downpours caused vehicles to slide off of local roads on Saturday and prompted multiple water rescues.

In Slidell, Louisiana, up to 6 inches of rain fell in less than 12 hours, which also caused flash flooding. As the weekend storms pounded northeastern states like Pennsylvania and New York, Pittsburgh resident Tim Broadwater told “CBS Mornings” that ferocious wind gusts shook his home so violently that it was knocked off of the cement blocks that previously held it upright.  “I was scared to death,” Broadwater said. “I thought I was going to end up in the creek.” In New York City, officials said an 85-year-old man was struck and killed by a falling tree in Queens. In Brooklyn, where wind gusts reached 64 mph, video showed furniture tumbling across the deck of a rooftop pool. The city’s Parks and Recreation Department said the storms downed more than 250 trees across the city.

A storm in Massachusetts has left thousands without power after wind gusts brought down trees and power lines around the state.  National Grid reported that more than 20,000 residents were without power for part of the day on Saturday. Eversource reported that over 11,000 customers have been affected. Wind gusts hit up to 55 miles per hour in Boston, with peak gusts hitting 63 miles per hour in Cohasset. Around 229 flights were delayed at Logan Airport and 58 had been canceled.  Woburn tree down Several trees in Woburn blocked roads and ripped down power lines. The Woburn Police Department asked residents to avoid Wyman Street in the area of Park Drive and Watson Lane after a tree took down an entire utility pole and blocked all traffic.

The owner of a Marietta tree cutting service says business is up this week as residents grow concerned about the effects of heavy rain on their trees. Tree-cutting crews report they are working nonstop, removing trees as more severe storms are forecast. Crews with Top Tier Trees cut down a tree that fell in the yard of a Sandy Springs home. “We had a catastrophic failure of a 42-inch deep southern red oak that sprawled across the back of this well-landscaped backyard. It caused quite a bit of damage,” David Hall, the owner of Top Tier Trees, said.  The tree knocked down a retaining wall in the home’s backyard.

“This is probably the twelvth or thirteenth emergency job we’ve responded to in the last couple of days,” Hall said. He’s had a busy week. Periods of excessive rain can weaken roots and make trees unsafe. Over in Marietta, David Lynch says trees in his yard started to lean in recent years. “We’re thinking about having that taken down just as a kind of preemptive move in case something reoccurs again. We just don’t want a second tree hitting the house. Being proactive rather than reactive,” Lynch said. Hall has this warning: “A tree that leans towards your house obviously is always of concern. If it’s within striking distance, it’s just pretty obvious where it’s going to fall,” Hall said. Tree experts warn that you should check the health of trees around your home.
