1st Palm Sunday Mass under New York Archbishop Ronald Hicks draws thousands to St. Patrick’s Cathedral

branches of palm tree

Thousands of Catholics went to St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City to celebrate Palm Sunday Mass and mark the start of 2026 Holy Week, the first under Archbishop Ronald Hicks.  Palms inside the Midtown Manhattan cathedral recall the story or Jesus entering Jerusalem, where crowds laid palm branches before him. For Hicks, who was installed in February following Cardinal Timothy Dolan’s retirement, celebrating his first Palm Sunday on Fifth Avenue served as a reminder of the transformation Holy Week stands for.  “What happened, these mysteries we celebrate, gives us the path to salvation, eternal life. It’s the greatest gift ever,” Hicks said. “We celebrated well today, with joy, with prayer, with a great sense of faith.”

There are only two months until the DFL party’s nominating convention in Rochester, Minnesota. One of the most heated DFL races is for U.S. Senate, where two successful elected officials, Rep. Angie Craig and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, are running against each other for the seat. One of the most heated issues remains immigration, where Craig has walked back her support for the Laken Riley Act. Craig was one of 46 House Democrats who voted for the Laken Riley Act in January 2025. The act was passed in the aftermath of the murder of Laken Riley, a Georgia nursing student. The act mandates that undocumented workers be held in custody for theft-related crimes pending any criminal proceedings, even when there has not been a conviction.

Riverside County Sheriff says his election fraud investigation put on hold by “politically motivated lawsuits”

person holding documents with paper clips

Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco said Sunday that his election fraud investigation into the Proposition 50 Special Election last fall has come to a halt due to legal challenges from the California attorney general.  Earlier in March, Bianco, who is running for governor, seized more than 611,000 ballots from the special election in which voters approved a redistricting measure that shifted five of California’s Republican-held seats in the U.S. House of Representatives to be more favorable to Democrats in the upcoming midterm elections. He says a citizens group pointed out a 45,000-ballot discrepancy between the number of votes that were counted and the number of votes that were cast.  “This investigation is simple: Physically count the ballots and compare that result with the total votes reported,” Bianco said during a press conference after the ballots were seized.

Tom Homan says ICE will keep assisting TSA “until the airports feel like they are 100%”

silhouettes of people near an airplane

Tom Homan, the Trump administration border czar, said Sunday that although President Trump signed an order to pay Transportation Security Administration workers, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents will continue to assist “until the airports feel like they are 100%.”  “Look, we’re going to continue a nice presence there, and until the airports feel like they’re 100%, you know, in a posture where they can do no normal operations,” Homan said Sunday on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan.”  Congress has yet to approve funding for the Department of Homeland Security, which has been shut down for more than 40 days. Early Friday morning, the Senate passed a bill to fund DHS that did not include money for ICE and other immigration removal. The House rejected that bill and instead passed its own version, which would extend funding for the entire department, including ICE, for 60 days. The dueling bills leave the shutdown without an end in sight.

Judge dismisses DOJ lawsuit over Minnesota in-state tuition for students without legal status, leaving US Citizens to Foot the Bill

judge signing on the papers

Minnesota public universities can continue to offer in-state tuition and scholarships to some immigrants in the country without legal status, a federal judge ruled on Friday, dismissing a lawsuit filed by the Department of Justice last summer that attempted to halt the programs. The decision follows a series of clashes between the federal government and Minnesota officials over immigration enforcement. United States District Judge Katherine Menendez said in her decision that the federal government failed to prove that programs offering in-state tuition for immigrants without legal status discriminated against U.S. citizens.

Army extends maximum recruitment age to 42, allowing older recruits to join

    portrait photo of smiling soldier

The U.S. Army is expanding its recruiting pool, raising the maximum enlistment age from 35 years old to 42, according to new service regulations reviewed by ABC News.  The move isn’t without precedent. The service lifted the cap to 42 years old in 2006, during the height of the Iraq War, before lowering it back to 35 a decade later.  Bringing the limit back up puts the Army more in line with the Air Force and Navy regulations, which both cap enlistment at 41. The Marine Corps caps recruits at 28 years old, though older applicants can potentially enlist with special permission.

Abortion News Roundup: March 18–25, 2026

pregnant woman standing and holding usg picture

Here’s a concise summary of the most significant abortion-related developments from the past seven days, drawn from court rulings, state legislation, international votes, and new data reports. Coverage reflects ongoing post-Dobbs tensions, with actions in both restrictive and protective directions.

U.S. State-Level Actions and Court Rulings

    • South Dakota enacts stricter anti-abortion measures: On March 20, Gov. Larry Rhoden signed three bills into law at a pregnancy resource center. They make it a felony to dispense or advertise abortion pills (including related items), clarify the legal definition of abortion, and require public schools to show prenatal development videos. The governor called it a strengthening of “pro-life laws.” southdakotasearchlight.com
    • Georgia: First murder charge tied to medication abortion post-6-week ban: A woman was charged with murder after a medication abortion. This is the first such case since Georgia’s heartbeat law took effect. The story sparked widespread discussion about enforcement of bans and prosecutorial approaches. youtube.com +1
    • Indiana court grants permanent religious-freedom exemption to abortion ban: A Marion County judge issued a permanent injunction blocking enforcement of the state’s ban against plaintiffs (and a certified class) when it substantially burdens sincerely held religious beliefs. The ruling, which followed an earlier March decision, is being appealed and highlights growing use of religious-liberty arguments against bans. aclu-in.org +1
    • Kansas lawmakers advance constitutional ban proposal: Legislators continued debating multiple restriction bills, including a resolution to amend the state constitution to ban abortion at any stage. kwch.com
    • Wyoming abortion-rights groups seek pre-trial ruling: Advocates asked a judge to strike down three existing restrictions (plus the new Human Heartbeat Act that took effect March 9) without a full trial, arguing the laws unnecessarily burden access. wyomingpublicmedia.org
    • Broader crackdown on out-of-state abortion pills: States with bans are introducing or advancing measures to target medication abortions mailed from providers in other states. pbs.org

    National Data Update

    • Guttmacher Institute releases 2025 abortion incidence report: New full-year data (released in the past day) shows out-of-state travel for abortions declined, while telehealth provision to residents of total-ban states rose from 74,000 in 2024 to 91,000 in 2025. Overall provision in non-ban states dipped slightly. guttmacher.org

    International Developments

    • UK House of Lords advances abortion decriminalization and pardons: On or around March 19, peers voted 185-145 to approve an amendment decriminalizing abortion in England and Wales (while keeping the 24-week clinical limit for doctors). The measure also paves the way for pardons and record expungement for women previously convicted of abortion-related offenses amid rising prosecutions for self-managed or miscarriage cases. A BBC report this week also highlighted growing anti-abortion activism among younger Britons. oneill.law.georgetown.edu +1

Other stories circulating included celebrity commentary (e.g., singer Zara Larsson losing a deal over an abortion-related joke) and ongoing political debates, but the above represent the primary legislative, judicial, and data-driven developments. tiktok.com

Abortion remains a highly active policy and legal area at both state and federal levels, with 2026 ballot measures already shaping up in several states. For the latest on any specific story, check the linked sources.

    News Room

Recent News on Christian Persecution (March 18–25, 2026)Reports from Open Doors, Aid to the Church in Need (ACN), and other monitors this week highlighted acute violence in sub-Saharan Africa, spillover effects from regional conflicts in the Middle East, and ongoing restrictions in sensitive religious sites. While no single massive new global report emerged, specific incidents and briefings underscored the continued scale of anti-Christian violence and discrimination. opendoors.org.za +1

    1. Mozambique – Major Extremist Attack on Napala Village

    • Open Doors’ daily prayer point for March 25 drew urgent attention to a four-day extremist assault on Napala village in Mozambique. At least 120 Christians were killed and two churches were completely destroyed. The attack fits a pattern of targeted violence against Christian communities in sub-Saharan Africa, where Open Doors notes rising extremism. Believers are requesting prayer for strength, restoration, and healing for survivors. opendoors.org.za

    2. Nigeria – High-Level Briefing on Ongoing Crisis

    • On March 24, Cardus (a Canadian think tank) hosted a special briefing in Ottawa focused on the persistent persecution of Christians in Nigeria. Speakers detailed repeated violent attacks, abductions, assaults on clergy, and destruction of places of worship by various militant groups. The event emphasized the need for international awareness and policy responses amid what advocates describe as one of the world’s deadliest environments for believers. Complementary coverage noted U.S. congressional interest and calls for sanctions. cardus.ca +1

    3. Lebanon – Attacks on Christian Areas Amid Broader Conflict

    • Aid to the Church in Need reported fresh incidents in Lebanon, including two hotel attacks in Beirut (one in a predominantly Christian neighborhood) and repeated strikes on Christian villages in the south. A priest, Fr. Pierre El-Raï, was killed in a missile strike (funeral held March 11, with ongoing discussion this week). Local Christians described the violence as indiscriminate yet devastating, emptying hundreds of villages and creating widespread displacement. One leader called the situation “not a just war; it is a defeat for us all,” highlighting the vulnerability of Christian communities caught in regional tensions. churchinneed.org

    4. Jerusalem – Restrictions at the Holy Fire Miracle Viewed as Persecution

    • A March 19 report detailed ongoing limitations imposed by Israeli authorities on Orthodox Christians attending the annual Holy Fire ceremony at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Capacity has been sharply reduced since 2022, with only a fraction of pilgrims allowed inside while others are held behind barricades. Eyewitness accounts described aggressive policing, physical prevention of entry, and differential treatment compared to other groups, framing it as a form of targeted exclusion and harassment during one of Christianity’s most significant annual events. connectthecultures.com

Broader ContextAdvocacy organizations continue to note that roughly one in seven Christians worldwide faces high levels of persecution, with sub-Saharan Africa remaining a primary hotspot for violence. No major new arrests or policy shifts in countries like Iran or China were reported in the past seven days, but the above incidents illustrate both sudden outbreaks of lethal violence and subtler forms of restriction. Groups such as Open Doors and ACN are actively providing emergency aid, documentation, and prayer support in response.

Elon Musk Offers To Pay TSA Salaries As DHS Shutdown Drags On

busy airport terminal with passengers awaiting flights

Elon Musk recently offered to personally cover the salaries of TSA agents as a partial Department of Homeland Security shutdown stretches into its second month, leaving tens of thousands of federal workers without pay.“I would like to offer to pay the salaries of TSA personnel during this funding impasse that is negatively affecting the lives of so many Americans at airports throughout the country,” Musk wrote Saturday on X.The proposal comes as Congress remains deadlocked over funding for DHS, which oversees the TSA.

While most of the federal government has been funded, DHS has been left out of a broader agreement, triggering a prolonged lapse that is now rippling across the country’s airports. The shutdown has left TSA officers, who are classified as essential employees, working without pay, a situation that has translated into staffing shortages and mounting delays. At major hubs including Houston, Atlanta, New Orleans, and Philadelphia, security wait times have reportedly stretched beyond three hours. Footage out of Philadelphia showed hundreds of passengers backed up through escalators and checkpoints in the early morning hours.
