14 firefighters injured, including 1 seriously, while battling East Elmhurst, Queens, house fire

Sixteen people, including 14 firefighters, were injured in a multiple-alarm fire in Queens on Sunday. Three of the injured firefighters were hospitalized, including one in serious condition, fire officials said. Video shows heavy smoke coming from a home at 93rd Street, between Astoria Boulevard and 30th Avenue in East Elmhurst. The FDNY said the fire started just before 3 p.m. on the top floor and quickly grew to four alarms.

“Praying for everyone affected by this devastating fire in East Elmhurst, especially the firefighter seriously injured and all those recovering. Our firefighters run toward danger to protect the rest of us. They deserve every resource, every support, and our gratitude. Holding the families, neighbors, and first responders in my heart today,” state Sen. Jessica Ramos said. It’s unclear the extent of the damage to the home and there was no immediate word on the cause of the blaze.

A candidate backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has conceded a high-profile city council race for a seat representing parts of Manhattan’s West Side. Carl Wilson’s victory on Tuesday was seen by some as a test of the strength of an endorsement from Mamdani, who has governed with a star power unusual in modern politics since emerging from relative obscurity to win the mayoral election last year. Mamdani had endorsed Lindsay Boylan, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and the first woman to publicly accuse former Governor Andrew Cuomo of sexual harassment, accusations he has denied.

Mamdani’s early viral promise to open city-run grocery stores has all but disappeared from the conversation during his first 100 days in office. The pitch that candidate Mamdani made repeated was that five grocery stores — one in each borough — could sell food to hard-working New Yorkers at wholesale prices if the city covered rent and property taxes. Thousands of Catholics went to St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City to celebrate Palm Sunday Mass and mark the start of 2026 Holy Week, the first under Archbishop Ronald Hicks.  Palms inside the Midtown Manhattan cathedral recall the story or Jesus entering Jerusalem, where crowds laid palm branches before him. For Hicks, who was installed in February following Cardinal Timothy Dolan’s retirement, celebrating his first Palm Sunday on Fifth Avenue served as a reminder of the transformation Holy Week stands for.  “What happened, these mysteries we celebrate, gives us the path to salvation, eternal life. It’s the greatest gift ever,” Hicks said. “We celebrated well today, with joy, with prayer, with a great sense of faith.”

The New York City Police Department is investigating a triple stabbing at an apartment complex in Brooklyn. The violence erupted just after 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Van Dyke Houses on Dumont Avenue between Mother Gaston Boulevard and Powell Street in the Brownsville section of the borough. All 3 victims are expected to survive, police say Police tape was seen stretched in the entry way of a building on Dumont. Police say officers responded quickly to a 911 call and found three victims at the scene: two women and one man, all suffering from stab wounds. According to authorities, a 25-year-old woman was stabbed in the lower abdomen. a 26-year-old woman was stabbed multiple times in the buttocks and back, and a 23-year-old man was stabbed in the chest.
