Explosive Diarrhea Parasite Outbreak Hits 20 States: Full List of Affected Areas

anonymous man hanging toilet paper in bathroom

A parasite that causes explosive, watery diarrhea has sickened 145 people across 20 US states, prompting an ongoing investigation by federal and state health officials into the source of the outbreak. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the cases were reported between May and June 16 and involve patients ranging in age from 5 to 86 years old. So far, 20 people have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported. Breaking It Down What is Shigella and how does it spread? What are the symptoms of Shigella infection? How are health authorities responding to the outbreak in Wayanad? Created with AI. Health officials believe the illnesses are linked to contaminated food because none of the patients reported recent international travel.

However, investigators have not yet identified the exact source. The parasite, Cyclospora cayetanensis, causes cyclosporiasis, a foodborne illness that commonly leads to explosive, watery diarrhea, severe stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. Symptoms usually appear about a week after infection and mainly affect the intestines, although some infected people may not develop symptoms. The CDC said local, state, and federal public health authorities are investigating several clusters of cases spanning multiple states. Officials also noted that the true number of infections may be higher because some cases may not have been diagnosed.

List of 20 States Affected By The Outbreak The CDC has reported cases in the following states and Washington, DC:

  • New York
  • New Jersey
  • Connecticut
  • Pennsylvania
  • Massachusetts
  • Rhode Island
  • Delaware
  • Maryland
  • Virginia
  • North Carolina
  • Ohio
  • Tennessee
  • Wisconsin
  • Illinois
  • Georgia
  • Florida
  • Texas
  • Louisiana
  • Colorado
  • Alaska
  • Washington DC

Among the affected areas, New York has reported the highest number of cases, with between 31 and 80 infections, followed by Texas and Illinois, which have each recorded between 11 and 30 cases. While cyclosporiasis can resolve on its own, symptoms may last for a month or longer if left untreated, increasing the risk of dehydration. The CDC says the infection is typically treated with the antibiotic trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, also sold under the brand names Bactrim, Septra and Cotrim. The agency also recommends following safe food handling and storage practices. Previous US outbreaks have been linked to imported fresh produce, including cilantro, raspberries, sweet peas, mesclun lettuce and basil.

73-year-old man punched, stabbed on Upper West Side bus; 2 suspects sought

Police are asking for the public’s help to identify and locate two suspects wanted for assaulting an elderly man while riding a bus on the Upper West Side earlier this month. What we know: On June 5, a 73-year-old man was onboard an M104 MTA bus near Broadway and West 92nd Street when a verbal dispute broke out with two suspects. Police say the suspects punched the victim in the head and body before stabbing him in the shoulder. The suspects then fled in an unknown direction, while the victim was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. What we don’t know: The identities of the suspects are still unknown. They are wanted for elderly assault. What you can do: Anyone with information is asked to contact the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline.

NYC public school splits parents, staff into `separate’ racial groups

street names boards and traffic lights

A Manhattan public school is treating parents and teachers as “separate” but equal. The P.S. 003 Charrette School in the West Village is hosting a workshop for parents and staffers that separate them into “affinity” groups by race and ethnicity — a move slammed as discriminatory by legal experts. “What Does it Mean to be White in a Multi-Racial Community at PS3? — How does whiteness affect the collective child experience at PS3, as well as the entire community? White-identifying PS3 community members – SIGN UP HERE,” reads the invite posted on the school’s website.

The June 16 “Listening Circles” event is being organized in partnership with a consulting firm called Liberation Spaces that promotes “equity and liberation.” “Folks will gather on zoom with Liberation Spaces for initial guidelines, and then break out into smaller affinity groups with the facilitators based on racial identity,” reads the invitation for parents and educators.

“Bring your valuable perspective and ideas for the future of our school,” it states. “BIPOC Folks – Educators, staff, parents and caregivers who identify as Black, Indigenous, Latinx/Hispanic, Asian, and other people of color – SIGN UP HERE,” it adds — while white parents and teachers are told to participate in a separate group. The bottom of the invitation cites sources of support for the program, including an article titled “Why People of Color Need Spaces Without White People” and another headlined “Becoming an Anti-racist White Ally: How a White Affinity Group Can Help.” Some families and educators were shocked at being advised to separate into groups by race. “The PS 3 PTA Charrette Listening Circles facilitated by Liberation Spaces is planning on segregating parents into ‘BIPOC Folks’ and ‘White-identifying’ affinity groups,” noted Moshe Spern, president of United Jewish Teachers who said he was contacted by PS 3 parents who objected to the event.

“That doesn’t build community. Instead, it divides and isolates families,” Spern said. One civil rights lawyer said separating parents or educators by race was clearly illegal, citing the 1954 landmark US Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education that struck down racial segregation or “separate but equal” education as unconstitutional. “Segregating public school parents by race or ethnicity is not only offensive, it’s also unlawful,” said William Jacobson, a Cornell University law professor and founder of the Equal Protection Project, a nonprofit conservative advocacy organization. “The federal civil rights statutes cover all aspects of school programming, not just what happens in the classroom,” he said. “Segregating faculty and staff by race or ethnicity also may be an unlawful employment practice,” Jacobson added. “Outsourcing these programs to an outside consultant does not insulate the school from liability and responsibility.”

A majority of PS3’s roughly 600 students are white. Spern noted Jewish parents and teachers are not even mentioned on the program description, despite a surge in antisemitism. “This isn’t the time to hide from issues, especially those facing the Jewish community. We should have real conversations around race and bias but needs to be done in a way that makes everyone feel safe and inclusive.” PS 3 refers to itself as a “charrette” school that touts group brainstorming. The school principal, Hillary Casado, declined to comment.

A spokesperson for Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels and the Department of Education said the PS 3 parents association was running the “Listening Circles” program, not the school administration. “New York City Public Schools remains focused on fostering welcoming, inclusive environments where all students and families feel respected and supported. This event was organized by the school’s PTA,” said DOE spokesperson Chyann Tull. “PTAs may separately choose to host a variety of programs and discussions for their parent communities.”

But Jacobson, of the Equal Protection Project, said the school and the city are still “potentially liable” for a PTA-led school program that violates the law, if they “promote or facilitate” it in any way “including on the school website.”The race-based “Listening Circles” is prominently displayed on the PS 3 website and said it is sponsored by the “The PS3 Charrette Planning Committee.”

Bright meteor gets attention Monday night across Great Lakes region

stars in the sky

If you missed the meteor sighting over Southeast Michigan early on May 27, perhaps you saw the latest one on Monday night.  A fireball, which is a bright meteor, was seen about 10:42 p.m. Eastern Time on Monday in a wider geographic area around Lake Erie than the one that was seen last week. The American Meteor Society said it received 197 reports from Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Ontario of Monday’s meteor.  The Southeast Michigan reports came from places such as Brighton, Dexter, Detroit, Garden City, Ida, Madison Hights, Marysville, Milan, Smiths Creek and Tucker.

The meteor view was described as bright blue/green; and the fragments broke up and burned up in the atmosphere.   “That was super cool. I’ve never seen anything like that,” one of the Michigan reports read.  “Several thousand meteors of fireball magnitude occur in the Earth’s atmosphere each day. The vast majority of these, however, occur over the oceans and uninhabited regions, and a good many are masked by daylight,” the American Meteor Society said.

Fire in train car near New York City’s Penn Station injures five and disrupts service

a man and a woman waiting by the road

A fire in a rail yard train car near New York’s Penn Station injured five people and disrupted service for many commuters early on Friday, authorities said. The fire resulted in train delays on the New Jersey Transit and Amtrak rail services into New York and briefly suspended Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) service, more than a week after a strike had shut down that system. New Jersey Transit posted on X that it was an Amtrak train car that was on fire “in one of the Hudson River tunnels”. It said the fire resulted in “overhead wire damage”. “Impacts are expected to last through the morning rush hour,” it said. Amtrak posted on X that it suspended its service until at least noon due to maintenance resulting “from a now extinguished fire in the New York area”.

It said lengthy delays were expected for trains traveling north of New York. It did not post any information about the fire itself. An email seeking comment was sent to Amtrak. Fire officials said 100 firefighters responded to the fire early on Friday and that five people were hurt. Two of them were taken to a hospital. Their conditions were not immediately known. Penn Station, underneath Madison Square Garden, can serve roughly 600,000 passengers daily via Amtrak, the New York subway system, New Jersey Transit and the LIRR.

Sixteen people, including 14 firefighters, were injured in a multiple-alarm fire in Queens on Sunday. Three of the injured firefighters were hospitalized, including one in serious condition, fire officials said. Video shows heavy smoke coming from a home at 93rd Street, between Astoria Boulevard and 30th Avenue in East Elmhurst. The FDNY said the fire started just before 3 p.m. on the top floor and quickly grew to four alarms.

“Praying for everyone affected by this devastating fire in East Elmhurst, especially the firefighter seriously injured and all those recovering. Our firefighters run toward danger to protect the rest of us. They deserve every resource, every support, and our gratitude. New Yorkers tired of him do not Support Candidate Backed by Zohran Mamdani: What It Means

Man smiling in business casual attire standing on city sidewalk near assemblymember district office

A candidate backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has conceded a high-profile city council race for a seat representing parts of Manhattan’s West Side. Carl Wilson’s victory on Tuesday was seen by some as a test of the strength of an endorsement from Mamdani, who has governed with a star power unusual in modern politics since emerging from relative obscurity to win the mayoral election last year. Mamdani had endorsed Lindsay Boylan, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and the first woman to publicly accuse former Governor Andrew Cuomo of sexual harassment, accusations he has denied.

Here are the promises Zohran Mamdani broke in his first 100 days in office

a man disembarking a bus in new york city ny usa

Mamdani’s early viral promise to open city-run grocery stores has all but disappeared from the conversation during his first 100 days in office. The pitch that candidate Mamdani made repeated was that five grocery stores — one in each borough — could sell food to hard-working New Yorkers at wholesale prices if the city covered rent and property taxes. But no such city-owned grocery stores have opened. Instead, Mamdani has just proposed $70 million in new funding for the city’s Economic Development Corporation to scout potential locations for and build the five stores.

1st Palm Sunday Mass under New York Archbishop Ronald Hicks draws thousands to St. Patrick’s Cathedral

branches of palm tree

Thousands of Catholics went to St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City to celebrate Palm Sunday Mass and mark the start of 2026 Holy Week, the first under Archbishop Ronald Hicks.  Palms inside the Midtown Manhattan cathedral recall the story or Jesus entering Jerusalem, where crowds laid palm branches before him. For Hicks, who was installed in February following Cardinal Timothy Dolan’s retirement, celebrating his first Palm Sunday on Fifth Avenue served as a reminder of the transformation Holy Week stands for.  “What happened, these mysteries we celebrate, gives us the path to salvation, eternal life. It’s the greatest gift ever,” Hicks said. “We celebrated well today, with joy, with prayer, with a great sense of faith.”
