Rabies alerts issued in Harford, Anne Arundel counties involving racoon, bat and fox

Health officials in Harford and Anne Arundel counties have issued new rabies alerts involving a racoon, a fox and a bat. The Harford County Health Department said Tuesday it had received confirmation from state health officials that two animals — a racoon and a fox — had tested positive for the rabies virus.  The rabid raccoon was found near the 200 block of Cooley Mill Road, in Havre de Grace, while the rabid fox was found near the 700 block of Walters Mill Road in Forest Hill, Maryland. The health department said the rabid animals may have exposed people or pets in surrounding areas.    

“Witnessing a raccoon, fox, or other wildlife is not cause for alarm,” the department said in a statement. “But if you or your pets have had contact with a raccoon or fox near the specified areas, please call the Harford County Health Department at 410-877-2300 for follow-up.” Anne Arundel bat alert In Anne Arundel County, an alert was issued by the health department seeking information about anyone who might have come in contact with an infected bat found outside Almondbury Drive in Pasadena. A statement said the bat was found August 9 and tested positive for rabies. The Arundel County Department of Health is urging anyone who might have come into contact with the bat to contact the department at 410-222-7254. Area residents who discover unexplained wounds on their pets should also reach out to report the injuries. 

Rabies is spread by the bite or scratch of an infected animal, such as a groundhog, cat, fox, raccoon, skunk or bat. It is also spread when an infected animal’s saliva comes in contact with the eyes, nose, mouth or open cut of a person or another animal. Latest warnings follow recent biting incidents Preventive treatment might be required for anyone who handled, fed or was attacked by the infected animal. Rabies is a fatal disease, and preventive treatment (injections) must be started as soon as possible. The latest reports of rabid animals follows an incident in July in which a beaver infected with rabies bit a 13-year-old boy at Cunningham Falls State Park in Maryland’s Frederick County.

The boy sustained injuries to his hands and chest and was flown to Johns Hopkins Hospital for treatment.   Then, earlier this month, a 19-year-old man was bitten on the leg while visiting Cunningham Falls State Park.

A federal district court judge has rejected the Justice Department’s effort to obtain Maryland voter information.  The Department of Justice sued Maryland and several other states for not turning over private voter rolls, which include personal information for millions of Maryland voters.  In a decision shared Monday, Federal Judge Stephanie Gallagher dismissed the Department of Justice lawsuit, telling Department of Justice officials that the court will not interpret federal voting law “contrary to its text simply because an office of the party advancing the interpretation has adopted it.”

Maryland State Board of Elections officials said the security and privacy of voter information remain a top priority and will be protected.  The court also ruled that the Civil Rights Act of 1960 prevents the federal government from demanding that states provide it with an unredacted statewide registration list.  “With today’s ruling, Maryland’s federal court has added its voice to the unanimous chorus of judges who have said states do not have to follow the Trump Administration’s demand to turn over their unredacted voter registration databases,” said Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown. “These databases contain the names, addresses, and Social Security numbers of millions of Marylanders, sensitive personal information that Marylanders have a right to keep private. DOJ sued Maryland and twenty-nine other jurisdictions for their refusal to hand over the unredacted, sensitive information, and nine courts have now agreed the Administration’s demand was unlawful.”

Severe thunderstorm knocks down trees, power lines in Annapolis

A single severe thunderstorm moved through central Anne Arundel County during the 8 o’clock hour Friday evening.  Winds were measured at greater than 60 MPH in and around Parole, into west Annapolis. Trees and power lines were knocked down by severe straight-line winds.  Bud Zapata, Annapolis Fire Department Captain and Public Information Officer, said that a tree was blown onto a home in the 400 block of Halsey Road.

No injuries were reported; however, occupants of the home were displaced, and the Office of Emergency Management is assisting. Many trees and power lines were knocked down in and around Annapolis, which has caused active road closures.  If you have storm photos to safely share with WJZ, email them to pictures@wjz.com. Individuals exposed to rabid fox in Baltimore’s Roland Park

Individuals were exposed to a fox that tested positive for rabies in Baltimore’s Roland Park on Tuesday, according to City Health Department officials.  Two foxes tested positive, and Animal Control believes five others in the area were part of the same den.  Health officials said one of the foxes was picked up near the intersection of Overhill Road and Meadow Lane. The second one was found near the 4400 block of Linkwood Road. Both areas border Stoney Run Park.  Another potential human exposure was reported on 4400 Linkwood Road. Health officials have canvassed the area where the foxes were captured.

“We take any rabies exposure seriously,” said Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Michelle Taylor. “If you have any information about the foxes in the area or believe you may have had contact with a fox, please contact the Baltimore City Health Department.”   Health officials recommend that neighbors living near Stoney Run Park check their pets for potential animal bites or suspicious wounds, and ensure pets are up to date on their rabies vaccinations, as the virus can be deadly if left untreated.  Anyone who handled the foxes in Roland Park is asked to call health officials at 10-396-4436 during normal business hours, or call the Baltimore City Operator at 410-396-3100 after business hours or on weekends.   This is not the first time a rabid animal has been found in Baltimore. In October 2025, a rabid raccoon was captured inside a Baltimore middle school after getting in through an open door.

Baltimore County 5-year-old, 10-year-old honored for saving grandmother’s life

A Baltimore County 5-year-old boy and his big brother have been deemed heroes in Perry Hall for saving their grandmother’s life, not just once, but twice.  If it wasn’t for their brave actions, their mother said that things could have been much worse.  For his bravery, Liam was presented with a certificate, a Baltimore County Police plastic badge, and a plastic police officer duckie in front of his class at Honeygo Elementary School, alongside his principal, the school’s student resource officer, and his mom.

Their mom, Ashley Paschall, will tell you because she remembers late April when she got a phone call at work that she will never forget.  “I got a phone call, and I heard my 5-year-old, and he said, ‘Mommy, something’s wrong with Mimi. Mimi’s not feeling well.’ And so, I’m like, ‘Liam, what’s going on?’ And he’s like, ‘Mommy, Mimi is on the floor,'” Ashley Paschall said.

Baltimore police are looking for two men after an 11-year-old boy and an adult were shot at a playground  in the city’s Upton neighborhood Wednesday evening. Officers were called to Pennsylvania Avenue and Dolphin Street around 7:40 p.m. for reports of a shooting. They found the boy and a 26-year-old man with gunshot wounds. Both were rushed to the hospital. Police said they child is in serious but stable condition and the man is stable. Investigators don’t believe the child and the man are related. Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said the preliminary investigation indicates that two people drove up across the street from the playground and fired shots. One of them used a rifle, police said.

A Southwest Airlines passenger traveling out of BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport shared a video with CBS News Baltimore after the plane he was on clipped another aircraft earlier this week. The video by Kevin White, who was heading home to Connecticut, showed the moments after two airplanes hit each other while leaving the gates on Monday, May 4. “It was almost like if you got rear-ended at a slow speed,” White said. “It was a good jolt.” White said he and his wife noticed how close the planes were when they sat down, but didn’t think anything of it. “I looked down, and we noticed that the wings were kind of close,” White said. “I said, ‘Well, they know what they’re doing.

Next thing you know, they bumped us.” According to both the FAA and Southwest Airlines, Southwest flights 1048 to Connecticut and 562 to Houston backed into each other and caused minor damage to the wingtips. Passengers on both flights were forced to change planes. Southwest said the planes were immediately removed from service. Review underway over Southwest flights Southwest said no passengers were injured, and an internal review is underway. In a statement, Southwest said, “Safety is their top priority for both passengers and employees.” “Hey, ground, Southwest 1048, we had contact between the 2 aircraft back here,” the pilot said. “We’re going to need to taxi straight ahead back to Alpha 7.”
