Democrats decry ‘smear’ as Trump FBI pushes for release of Eric Swalwell file

The Trump administration has reportedly been pushing to release records from an FBI investigation related to Eric Swalwell and alleged links to a Chinese agent as the Democratic congressman makes gains in the California governor’s race. The Washington Post reported on Saturday, citing “three people familiar with the effort”, that the FBI director, Kash Patel, is pushing to release the files, even though there is no public evidence of wrongdoing on Swalwell’s part.

The records stem from a decade-old investigation into a suspected spy who had developed relationships with US politicians and assisted Swalwell with fundraising. An FBI official previously said Swalwell was cooperative with the investigation and was not suspected of wrongdoing. He cut off contact with the woman after speaking to the FBI. The profile of Swalwell, an outspoken critic of Donald Trump who served as a congressional manager during the president’s second impeachment trial, has risen as the contest for California governor takes shape. The field of candidates to replace Gavin Newsom is crowded, with at least eight Democrats, including Swalwell, and two Republicans.

There are only two months until the DFL party’s nominating convention in Rochester, Minnesota. One of the most heated DFL races is for U.S. Senate, where two successful elected officials, Rep. Angie Craig and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, are running against each other for the seat. One of the most heated issues remains immigration, where Craig has walked back her support for the Laken Riley Act. Craig was one of 46 House Democrats who voted for the Laken Riley Act in January 2025. The act was passed in the aftermath of the murder of Laken Riley, a Georgia nursing student. The act mandates that undocumented workers be held in custody for theft-related crimes pending any criminal proceedings, even when there has not been a conviction.

Avian Flu Has Killed Thousands of Birds in the U.S. Pennsylvania Is at the Epicenter.

flock of birds flying in the sky

This article originally appeared on Inside Climate News, a nonprofit, non-partisan news organization that covers climate, energy and the environment and a Pennsylvania Capital-Star partners.  When two bald eagles built a nest in Philadelphia in 2007, it was the first time one had been recorded in the area in 200 years. Today, eagles can be spotted swooping over Wissahickon Creek, flying near Kelly Drive, and soaring above FDR Park. Their return to American skies is one of the 21st century’s great conservation stories. From near-extinction lows in the 1960s, the estimated population of bald eagles in the United States has rebounded to more than 315,000.

Idaho lawmakers passed a sweeping bathroom ban Friday, approving legislation that would make it a crime for transgender people to use the bathroom that matches their gender identity, even inside privately owned businesses. If Republican Gov. Brad Little signs the bill, Idaho will have the strictest bathroom ban in the nation, subjecting people to time behind bars if they knowingly enter a bathroom, locker room or changing area that does not correspond with their sex assigned at birth.

Oklahoma Advances Bill To Turn Dead Humans Into Actual Fertilizer 🤢

bag of garden soil

The Oklahoma State House on Tuesday passed a bipartisan bill that would make it legal to use the decomposed and ground-up remains of human corpses as soil fertilizer in the state. The legislation, HB 3660, seeks to include so-called “natural organic reduction” (NOR), a common euphemism for human composting, “as a form of cremation” under state law. Oklahoma’s lower chamber passed the bill 59-37, with both Republicans and Democrats voting in favor, prompting a harsh rebuke from one of the GOP lawmakers who opposes the legislation.

The Supreme Court seemed open Monday to cracking down on states’ ability to accept mail-in ballots that arrive late. Several justices seemed concerned about the “slippery slope” of counting ballots received after Election Day, raising questions about who can receive ballots and how to address perceptions of fraud. “When do I know whether or not a choice is final?” Justice Clarence Thomas asked Missouri Solicitor General Scott Stewart.

Senate blocks voter ID amendment in narrow vote

photo of person dropping a vote

The Senate on Thursday defeated a proposed Voter ID amendment amid the ongoing efforts by Senate Republicans to pass the SAVE America Act. The chamber voted 52-47 in favor of the amendment, though it needed 60 votes, The Hill reported. Sen. Jon Husted, R-Ohio, introduced the amendment. His effort comes as he faces a tense battle in Ohio to serve a full term. Husted replaced JD Vance in the Senate after Gov. Mike DeWine, R-Ohio, tapped him for the role. He was previously the state’s lieutenant governor. The SAVE America Act has become a sore spot for some Senate Republicans as leadership has resisted calls to reform or terminate the filibuster to pass the marquis bill.
