Michigan Democrat Mallory McMorrow, a candidate for US Senate, deleted thousands of tweets, some of which defended “coastal elites” and were critical of “Middle America,” after The Post first reported on them last year.  Morrow, 39, purged her X account of roughly 6,000 posts, including all her tweets posted prior to 2020, CNN’s Andrew Kaczynski reported Wednesday.  The journalist noted the social media cleanse came after The Post’s April 2025 scoop on McMorrow’s tweet history.

Ex-Minnesota state trooper reveals how state ‘tried to cover up fraud allegations’ ; then Walz shut down his department

Minnesota Governor in navy suit with arms crossed at podium during press conference

A former Minnesota state trooper alleged this week that his bosses at the state Department of Human Services tried to bully him into quashing his findings of fraud in the state’s child care funding program. Jay Swanson, a former criminal investigator for the DHS, also revealed that it was well known among Somali refugees in East Africa that Minnesota was the best place to go in the US to pull off child care fraud schemes. And then, Gov. Tim Walz came into office — and Swanson’s entire department investigating waste, fraud and abuse was eliminated, according to Republican lawmakers.

Biden admin ‘zealously’ probed ‘traditional’ Christians and kept tabs on priests: DOJ task force report

close up of writing on a notebook

The Biden administration “zealously” investigated, penalized, and engaged in “aggressive prosecutions” of Christians “with traditional biblical views” — ignoring their conscientious objections and even secretly keeping tabs on Catholic priests, a Department of Justice task force found. The DOJ-led Task Force to Eradicate Anti-Christian Bias released 14 findings Thursday, confirming the 46th president’s officials “forc[ed] Christians with traditional biblical views to choose whether to live in accordance with their faith or risk violating federal law.”

In a 200-page report, the task force concluded: “The Biden Administration generally tolerated religious beliefs that were privately held but zealously pursued actions to limit Christians’ ability to act in accordance with their faith.”

2 men plea guilty in the 2013 killings of a Miami Gardens pastor and her grandson after over a decade of delays

man in orange jacket standing beside man in black leather jacket

After 13 years, a case involving the July 2013 killings of a Miami Gardens pastor and her grandson has concluded, with the two convicted men accepting plea deals for two counts of second-degree murder. Reginald Jackson and Roderick Martin stood before Judge Ellen Sue Venzer in a Miami-Dade courtroom on Wednesday and were sentenced to a combined 65 years in state prison. “Mr. Jackson, you’re pleading guilty to two counts of second-degree murder with a firearm along with two counts of robbery with a firearm, deadly weapon,” Judge Venzer said. “Yes, ma’am,” Jackson responded.

Jackson and Martin pleaded guilty to the lesser charges in connection with the deaths of 70-year-old Annette Anderson, a pastor, and her 20-year-old grandson, Tyrone Walker Jr. “Are you pleading guilty to these charges because you are guilty of these charges?” the judge asked Martin. “Yes,” Martin replied. Why the plea deal was delayed  The plea deal was delayed last week after Jackson had an outburst in court when his family was misinformed about the hearing time. Jackson said in court, “I’d rather my mom see me at trial so I can see her one last time,” referencing his grandmother, who he said died months after attending a previous hearing.

Man accused of running meth lab at Michigan State University’s Wells Hall

close up photo of chemicals in beakers

A man was arrested for allegedly running a meth lab inside Wells Hall at Michigan State University, police say. Court records show that 31-year-old Xin Tong was charged with malicious destruction of a building over $20,000 and operating/maintaining a lab involving methamphetamine. Tong was arraigned on Wednesday and received a $500,000 cash/surety bond. Officials say Wells Hall will be closed through Friday, May 1. The MSU Department of Police and Public Safety says it received a report of property damage inside the building last week and determined the damage was caused by “alleged criminal activity.”

Police say Tong allegedly had multiple substances — including sodium hydroxide pellets, hydrochloric acid, methanol, isopropyl alcohol, acetone, and butane. Tong was arrested and taken to the Ingham County Jail. It is unclear if Tong is a student or a staff member. The university says the building is undergoing further evaluation “to ensure a smooth return to normal operations.” Officials say there is no threat to the campus.

Cow runs loose on campus at University of Illinois

brown cow running on rural street

Students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign got an utterly surprising visitor on campus on Wednesday.  A video posted by the university’s student-run newspaper, The Daily Illini, shows a cow roaming the streets before hiding in the bushes near the main quad.  Cow sightings have been circulating on social media. One TikTok video captures a group of students gathered at a classroom window observing the emergency response. The cow toured the campus before being captured by wildlife officials. A veterinarian is now evaluating the cow for a few minor injuries.

School Teacher Misconduct April 23–30, 2026

an american flag inside the classroom

In the past week (April 23–30, 2026), several U.S. teachers faced arrests, firings, or administrative actions, mostly over allegations of inappropriate relationships or contact with students. These cases come primarily from Florida (a cluster of incidents), Alabama, West Virginia, New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona. Below are the key verified stories reported in that window, based on local law enforcement and school district announcements.

Florida cases (multiple arrests and one high-profile firing)

  • Kirsten Rose, 37, math teacher at Cocoa Beach Junior/Senior High School (Brevard County): The school board unanimously voted to terminate her employment on April 28, 2026, after her earlier arrest. She faces one count of sexual conduct by an authority figure and five counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor (plus lewd and indecent exposure). The alleged relationship with a student began via social media. The district stated it was “deeply troubled by these allegations” and is cooperating with law enforcement. fox35orlando.com
  • Heather Mashburn-Smith, 37, teacher at Port Charlotte High School (Charlotte County): Arrested April 29, 2026, after detectives say she had sexual intercourse with a 17-year-old student on campus on two occasions in the prior month. She provided a full confession. Charged with unlawful activity with certain minors (enhanced to a first-degree felony because of her position as a teacher). The district placed her on administrative leave and said it is “working closely with law enforcement” while prioritizing student safety. winknews.com
  • Nicholas Sapp, ~38, teacher at Williston Middle/High School (Levy County): Arrested April 23, 2026, after a witness reported an inappropriate relationship with a student. Charged under Florida Statute 800.101 (offenses against students by authority figures). He was placed on administrative leave without pay. levyso.com
  • Angela Faith Jourdan, substitute teacher at Lake Minneola High School (Lake County): Arrested and immediately fired on Monday, April 27, 2026, after an alleged classroom meltdown. Witnesses reported she twerked in class, referred to herself as a “million-dollar prostitute,” and grabbed a student. The district terminated her employment the same day, citing the behavior as unacceptable. She was charged in connection with the incident. nypost.com

Alabama case

  • Gilford Kibler Jr., 62, career technical education teacher at Discovery Middle School (Madison City Schools): Arrested April 27, 2026, on a felony charge of school employee sexual contact with a student under age 19. Police and the district investigated allegations of inappropriate contact. He was booked into Madison County Jail. waff.com

Arizona cases

  • Diego Florentine Ontamucha Franco (also reported as Diego Antemucha Franco), 30, kindergarten teacher at Pueblo Elementary (Scottsdale Unified School District): Arrested April 28, 2026, at his Mesa home after police say child sex abuse material (CSAM/child pornography) was found on his electronic devices. No evidence indicates any Scottsdale students were involved. He was fired following the arrest. fox10phoenix.com
  • Amy Beck, teacher at Coyote Hills Elementary School (Peoria Unified School District): Placed on paid administrative leave April 27, 2026, pending an internal investigation. The action followed the resurfacing of a 2020 video (originally posted by her son, social media influencer Noah Beck) that appeared to show her simulating oral sex with him while lip-syncing to explicit lyrics. The district cited “an abundance of caution” and emphasized that student safety was not impacted; a substitute is covering her class. usatoday.com

West Virginia

  • Curtis Collins Jr., 44, teacher at Logan Middle School (Logan County): Arrested Wednesday, April 29, 2026, on one count of sexual abuse by a parent, guardian, or custodian. The district confirmed the arrest and placed him on leave while cooperating with law enforcement. Details on the specific allegations remain limited in initial reports. wsaz.com

Texas

  • Cecilia Mueller, 46, elementary school teacher (Northside Independent School District, San Antonio): Arrested Monday, April 28, 2026, and charged with continuous sexual assault of a child. The alleged assaults occurred about a decade earlier while she taught at Lewis Elementary (she later taught at Henderson Elementary until 2019). The now-adult victim came forward recently. She was taken into custody without incident. ksat.com

New Mexico

  • Wyatt Cornelius, 43, middle school teacher and coach at Camino Real Middle School (Las Cruces Public Schools): Arrested Friday, April 24, 2026, on charges including criminal sexual contact of a minor (third-degree felony), child solicitation by electronic device, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Police allege an inappropriate relationship with a 14-year-old female student. He was placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation. lcsun-news.com

These bring the total reported incidents this week to around a dozen, with Florida again seeing multiple cases. Most stem from local sheriff’s offices and school district statements, with many still in early stages. No major national pattern or international stories broke in this exact seven-day period beyond what’s already been covered. If you’d like deeper details on any specific case, more states, or updates as they develop, just let me know!

Driverless cars in California can now get traffic tickets under new DMV rules

Police officer issuing a ticket to a robot driver in an orange sports car

For the first time, autonomous vehicles in California, such as Waymo robotaxis, can effectively be cited for breaking traffic laws. The new Department of Motor Vehicles regulations allow law enforcement agencies to issue notices of traffic violations to autonomous vehicle companies when their cars commit moving violations. The rules also require companies to respond to calls from police, firefighters and other emergency officials within 30 seconds.

Ahmed Banafa, an engineering professor at San Jose State University, said the rules could force companies to improve. “That’s going to force them to do it better, because this is the only way they can force a company to do better,” Banafa said. The changes come after several high-profile problems involving autonomous vehicles in San Francisco, including Waymo vehicles stalling and blocking intersections during a blackout in December. The San Francisco Fire Department has also repeatedly complained about driverless cars entering emergency zones and affecting responses. Under the new rules, AV companies can face penalties if their vehicles drive through active emergency zones. The Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association, which represents Waymo’s industry interests, did not specifically address the ticketing provisions but praised the broader DMV regulations.

“Autonomous vehicle innovators operating in California have a clear, workable path to test and deploy, ensuring the state will continue to benefit from autonomous technology through safer roads, enhanced accessibility, and strengthened supply chains,” said Jeff Farrah, the group’s CEO.

God’s Delays Are Not Denials

Person sitting on a wooden bench in a park checking their watch

What feels late to us is often perfectly timed by God. Heaven’s clock never runs behind schedule.

“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise… but is longsuffering to us-ward.” — 2 Peter 3:9

As a Christian one of the hardest spiritual lessons we have to learn is to trust God’s timing. With our 10 second attention span we often want immediate answers, quick breakthroughs, and instant clarity. However God will frequently work through seasons of waiting.

The early church expected Christ’s return and wrestled with questions as time passed. Peter answered this by saying God was not slow concerning His promise. What looked like delay was actually mercy. God was giving more people more time to repent and come to salvation.

This reveals something powerful: God’s “slow” timing is purposeful. He never delays carelessly. When it seems like He is waiting, He is working. When we think He is silent, He is still actively moving.

When we read the bible we can think about Abraham waiting for Isaac, Joseph waiting in prison, David waiting for the throne, Israel waiting for deliverance, and the world waiting for the Messiah. In every case, God fulfilled His promise always at the right moment.

Waiting through these seasons refine us. They expose impatience, deepen trust, and strengthen character. Waiting helps teach us to depend on God rather than circumstances.

You might be waiting today; for healing, direction, provision, reconciliation, or open doors. We could perceive and feel like nothing is happening. But God does not always work in your face Instead He’ll work underground before anything appears above ground. Roots grow before fruit shows.

Bible prophecy itself demonstrates timing. Jesus came “in the fullness of time” (Galatians 4:4). Not early. Not late. Right on schedule.

So when your heart grows weary, you feel overwhelmed and just plain tired, remember this: delays are not denials when God is involved. He is too wise to be early and too faithful to be late.

Thought to Ponder:

Could the season you call delay actually be a season of preparation?

Journaling Prompt:

What are you currently waiting on from God? How might He be working in you during the wait?

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the evidence of fulfilled prophecy and Your unchanging faithfulness. Help me to always remember what You have already done building my trust in You for what is still ahead. Strengthen my faith and remove doubt. Thank You that nothing can separate me from Your love through Christ Jesus. When fear rises, remind me that I am held securely in You. Help me rest in Your grace, walk in confidence, and trust Your love through every season. Please help me rest in Your unchanging love today, help me trust Your timing when I feel impatient. Remind me that Your delays are never wasted and Your promises never fail. Give me peace while I wait and faith while I cannot see. Be my light for the road ahead and the pavement to smooth out the bumps. In Jesus Name Amen

Search suspended for missing crew members of U.S.-flagged ship that overturned during typhoon

white orange u s coast guard boat on the sea

The search has been suspended for five missing crew members of a U.S.-flagged cargo ship that overturned near the Northern Mariana Islands during a typhoon, authorities said Wednesday. Six people were aboard the 145-foot ship, called the Mariana. Divers on April 21 recovered one crew member’s body from the overturned ship. “We are deeply saddened to announce that despite widespread efforts, we have made the difficult decision to suspend our search for the missing crew members of the Mariana,” Cmdr. Preston Hieb of the U.S. Coast Guard Oceania District said in a video posted on X.

“We offer our heartfelt condolences to the families of the Mariana crew, as well as the entire Saipan community.” The search lasted more than 100 hours and covered an area larger than the state of California, he said. Last week, officials released dramatic video and photos showing members of the U.S. Air Force and Coast Guard searching for the missing crew. The footage and images showed pararescuemen preparing to conduct dive operations. The teams also used a remotely operated underwater drone to search the interior of the ship.

New Yorkers tired of him do not Support Candidate Backed by Zohran Mamdani: What It Means

Man smiling in business casual attire standing on city sidewalk near assemblymember district office

A candidate backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has conceded a high-profile city council race for a seat representing parts of Manhattan’s West Side. Carl Wilson’s victory on Tuesday was seen by some as a test of the strength of an endorsement from Mamdani, who has governed with a star power unusual in modern politics since emerging from relative obscurity to win the mayoral election last year. Mamdani had endorsed Lindsay Boylan, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and the first woman to publicly accuse former Governor Andrew Cuomo of sexual harassment, accusations he has denied.

Older than the dinosaurs: scientists finally unlock secret of the mayfly’s dance

macro shot of a mayfly on a green leaf

On a spring evening along the banks of the River Thames, thousands of mayflies can be seen engaging in what may be one of the world’s oldest dances. In the fading light, the males make a steep vertical climb, flip over and float back to Earth – wings and tail outstretched in a skydiving posture so as to drop slowly through the sky. Mayflies are among the world’s oldest winged insects, emerging roughly 300m years ago – long before dinosaurs walked the Earth. Even the Mesopotamian poem the Epic of Gilgamesh, one of the oldest pieces of literature, makes reference to the short-lived mayfly.

Over the epochs, the insect’s basic design has changed very little compared with the fossils of their ancestors. “They have retained these odd characteristics and we can probably assume that they’ve been doing this [dance] for hundreds of millions of years, and yet we don’t really know why,” says Samuel Fabian, a research fellow at the University of Oxford who studies the aerial behaviours of insects. Now, Fabian and his colleagues at Imperial College London think they finally have an answer. In new research published in the Journal of Experimental Biology, the scientists reconstructed the flight behaviour of the common mayfly, filming large swarms in the London borough of Richmond in 3D and analysing the insects’ flight paths.

5 bald eagles mysteriously found dead in Michigan ‘not due to natural causes’

Five bald eagles were found dead in Michigan in a two-week span — sparking concern as environmental officials ruled they did not die from natural causes. All of the federally protected birds were discovered in the same area of the Upper Peninsula’s Garden Peninsula between April 3 and April 17, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Officials later determined that the bald eagles “did not die from natural causes, predators, or vehicle collisions.”

Minnesota Dad self proclaims and thinks he’s the ‘voice of this generation’ of anti-ICE protesters then attacks a Turning Point USA journalist

Man grabbing woman on city sidewalk with concerned expression

This is radicalization at its finest. Just months before he was arrested for violently shoving a Turning Point USA reporter at an anti-ICE protest, Minnesota dad Chris Ostroushko spent his days like any stereotypical white, middle-aged American man: working in construction and watching football from his couch. Ostroushko had never thought to participate in any protests in his 50-something years — until out-of-control protesters and ICE agents clashed during a deadly demonstration in North Minneapolis on Jan. 14.

Experts raise concerns about CTA after Yellow Line derailment in Rogers Park

an aerial shot of a traveling train

Almost 24 hours after a derailment made a mess of the Red, Purple, and Yellow lines in Chicago, the CTA continued to investigate the cause of the incident, and experts were raising concerns about what they called a troubling pattern. During the evening rush on Thursday, a Yellow Line train derailed in the rail yard near the Howard terminal in the Rogers Park neighborhood, prompting the CTA and firefighters to evacuate approximately 80 passengers from the train. No injuries were reported. “Howard is a very complicated, intricate yard, with lots of traffic. So, it’s a hot spot for possible derailments,” said DePaul University professor and transportation expert Joe Schwieterman.

The derailment interrupted service on the Red, Purple, and Yellow lines for several hours.  Video from CBS Skywatch showed the front wheels on one car of a two-car Yellow Line train appeared to end up on a different set of tracks than the rest of the train. “You look at this picture, you wonder if something happened with a switch, whether it was an open switch, or whether something about the speed or the wheel quality or something interacted with the rail,” Schwieterman said. It was at least the fifth derailment by a CTA train since February of 2025. Experts said this pattern is concerning and needs to be addressed.

FBI raids nearly two dozen Minnesota child care centers in fraud probe, including ‘Quality Learing Center’

FBI agents in tactical gear entering childcare building behind police tape

The FBI raided 22 childcare centers in Minnesota Tuesday morning as part of a wide-ranging investigation of social services fraud. Unlike this past winter’s Operation Metro Surge, the raids were not focused on immigration enforcement, but reportedly on prominent businesses tied to the Somali-American community. “Today the FBI with federal, state and local law enforcement is involved in court-authorized law enforcement activity as part of an ongoing fraud investigation,” a Justice Department official told The Post.

The targets included the Quality Learning Center — a Minneapolis day care that infamously misspelled the word “Learning” in its signage. President Trump announced a “war on fraud” in his February State of the Union address and put Vice President JD Vance in charge of a task force leading the effort.

Meth worth $8.1 million found in shipment disguised as tiles at U.S. border

truck on bridge

Authorities at the United States-Mexico border seized a shipment of suspected methamphetamine, which had an estimated street value of $8.1 million, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Tuesday. The shipment was disguised as tiles, the agency said. Border patrol officers found the narcotics inside a commercial tractor trailer that crossed the Pharr International Bridge from from Reynosa, Mexico into Texas on April 21. Once it was inspected and screened by a team of drug detection dogs, officers discovered that pallets masquerading as tiles in the back of the cargo vehicle actually contained packages of white powder.

Overall, they seized 200 packages weighing more than 900 pounds, along with the trailer itself, CBP said. Homeland Security Investigation agents have opened a criminal probe into the seizure, according to the agency CBP said the powder “tested positive for the properties of methamphetamine,” a synthetic stimulant that is considered highly addictive. Although there is an FDA-approved version of it that is very rarely prescribed for specific medical conditions, methamphetamine largely exists in the U.S. illegally, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Association.

Mexican special forces arrest top commander of cartel and his alleged money launderer

mexican police parade with national flag display

The Mexican authorities have arrested two top criminals, one of them a close ally of the slain founder of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), prompting gunmen to block roads near the border city of Reynosa. Audias Flores, known as “El Jardinero”, is a regional commander in control of swathes of CJNG territory along Mexico’s Pacific coast. He was considered a potential successor to Nemesio Oseguera, alias “El Mencho”, who ran the cartel and was killed in a security operation in February. Security forces surrounded a cabin in El Mirador, 12 miles (20km) north of the resort city of Puerto Vallarta, where Flores was being protected by a perimeter of about 30 pickup trucks and more than 60 gunmen, according to a press release from Mexico’s navy, which led the operation.

Who was El Mencho, the former police officer who co-founded an ultraviolent cartel in Mexico? Read more Flores’s escorts scattered as a diversion but he was located as he tried to hide in a drainage ditch, it added. “The operation was carried out with surgical precision without a single shot being fired,” the navy said in a statement. Videos shared by Mexico’s security minister, Omar García Harfuch, on social media showed aerial footage of the arrest as helicopters hovered overhead during the operation, which the navy said followed 19 months of surveillance and involved more than 500 troops, six helicopters and several planes.

Threats called in against Gateway Church part of “swatting” incident, police say

armed combat forces on american street

Gateway Church in Prosper was evacuated Sunday after the Prosper Police Department said someone called in a threat. It was later determined to be a false call as part of a “swatting” incident. Officers said someone called the department and made threatening statements tied to the church. Prosper Police said it responded immediately, along with Prosper Fire Rescue and the McKinney Police Department, to secure the area and establish a perimeter near the building along East Prosper Trail. The department said the church was safely evacuated around 12:30 p.m. and that the building was searched. An investigation remains ongoing. Prosper Police said there is no active threat to the public.

In a later update shared on Facebook, the department said the search led them to conclude the threat was part of a “swatting” call, which is when false information is shared to get a large emergency response.  Residents were asked to avoid the area as the investigation continues. In a separate announcement, the Town of Prosper said the church was evacuated shortly after the 11 a.m. service began. Children were kept together and escorted to a back parking lot to be reunited with parents. The town said the building is closed, and that anyone who left items inside will need to get them later.

German tourist dies after being bitten at snake show on family holiday in Egypt

king cobra in wicker basket

A German tourist has died after a snake crawled into his trousers and bit him as he watched a show in Egypt on a family holiday, police in Germany have said. The 57-year-old man was watching the snake-charming show at a hotel in Hurghada, a popular beach holiday destination on the Red Sea, in early April. The two snakes involved, thought to be cobras, were draped over the necks of audience members, police in southern Bavaria state said.

“The ‘snake charmer’ then let one of the snakes crawl into the trousers” of the German man and it bit him in the leg, they said in a statement. The victim showed “clear signs of poisoning” and had to be resuscitated before being taken to hospital, where he later died, they said. The man – who was not named in the statement – came from the Unterallgäu district of Bavaria and was on holiday with two relatives. German police and prosecutors are investigating his death and are awaiting the results of a toxicology test. When contacted by Agence France-Press, Egyptian authorities said they were not aware of the incident.

Baseball-sized hail, damaging winds possible across North Texas amid severe weather threat Tuesday

Tornado with debris and hail hitting a residential neighborhood with damaged houses and vehicles

The two main threats are wind and very large hail, with the possibility of an isolated tornado. Tuesday starts cloudy, warm and breezy, with temperatures in the 70s. Areas of fog are possible for the morning commute.

But it will once again be a busy afternoon with severe storms as a dry line and a cold front increase the potential for severe weather, prompting a First Alert Weather Day.

The timing of Tuesday’s storms will be between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., with 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. being the most likely timeframe for the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

Passengers help woman give birth on board Delta flight from Atlanta to Portland

a passenger plane flying in the sky

A Delta Air Lines flight from Atlanta to Portland last week had a special addition to its passenger list after a woman went into labor in the air. A spokesperson for the Atlanta-based airline said that Delta Flight 478 was just about 30 minutes from Portland International Airport on Friday night when the unexpected visitor gave the signal it wanted to be there for the landing. The flight attendants onboard sprang into action, aided by a doctor and two nurses who happened to be on board. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, actually,” Oregon EMT Tina Fritz told KOIN 6, saying that she and her friend improvised using a flight attendant’s shoestrings to create a makeshift tourniquet for an IV.

“She’s like, ‘I gotta push, I gotta push.’ And within three really good pushes, the baby was out and doing perfect. Mom was a rock star, like, mom did so good,” Fritz said. Because of the situation, the crew declared an emergency and were given priority landing at the Portland airport. They landed safely, and the woman was met by emergency medical services. “We extend our sincere thanks to the crew and medical volunteers on board who stepped in to provide care to a customer onboard prior to landing in Portland,” a Delta spokesperson told CBS News Atlanta.

‘Chonkers’ the large sea lion takes over the San Francisco Bay area

close up of california sea lion in san francisco

A gigantic 2,000lb Steller sea lion nicknamed “Chonkers” has become an unexpected local celebrity after taking up residence in the San Francisco Bay. The massive sea lion swam up to a dock on Pier 39 in San Francisco about a month ago and has remained in the area since, drawing attention from residents, visitors and social media users who have been sharing frequent photos and videos of the animal looming over its peers. Chonkers is a much larger breed than the more common California sea lions found in the Bay area, which according to the San Francisco Chronicle rarely exceed more than 850lb and 7ft in length.

According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, male Steller sea lions can reach up to 2,500lb and 11ft in length, with a lifespan of 20 to 30 years. While Steller sea lions typically live around Alaska, harbormaster Sheila Chandor told the Chronicle in March that they stray as far as San Francisco “every few years”. As many as 2,000 sea lions can often gather on the pier, depending on the time of year. The Chronicle reported last month that Chonkers could be seen near the Pier 39 viewing area, and that local harbor officials had described him as a “morning lark”, advising people to “get to the Pier early” if they wanted to catch a glimpse.

Late-season cold snap headed for Southeast Michigan to close out the week

hoarfrost and spiderweb on leaves

Just as local gardeners were getting into the swing of spring, Mother Nature is ready to deliver a cold reminder that the growing season isn’t quite ready yet. After a relatively mild start to the week, a late-season cold snap is headed for Southeast Michigan, bringing the threat of frost and overnight sub-freezing temperatures that could put sensitive early-season plants at risk. The most chill is expected to arrive in two waves later this week and into the early weekend. Thursday night and Friday morning are currently looking like the coldest period for the region. Inland areas, including Ann Arbor, Pontiac, and Howell, could see temperatures dip into the low 30s or even upper 20s.

Friday night and Saturday morning, while slightly less intense, clear skies and light winds will create the perfect conditions for widespread frost formation across the metro area. Lows will likely hover in the mid-30s, which is enough to damage “tender” vegetation. This round of cool air will happen as a cold front sliding through the Great Lakes mid-week will usher in a much drier and colder air mass from the north. While daytime highs will be in the 50s on Friday, the real concern is at night. Without cloud cover to act as a blanket, the heat from the day will escape rapidly. For those who have already started their outdoor containers or planted early vegetables, now is the time to have a plan.
