Tens of thousands of American flags are on display on the Boston Common as part of the annual Memorial Day weekend tradition. It’s the 16th year the flags have been on display, honoring over 37,000 Massachusetts service members who have died since the Revolutionary War. Daniella Palma has spent the last five years volunteering to help place the whopping number of flags. Hundreds of volunteers from Home Base, A Sox Foundation, Mass General programs and Military Families of the Fallen take part. “I love it. I think it’s a great thing that we do for the people that have served,” Palma said. “For me, it’s a hope that people take a moment and pause and reflect on what people have given for this country.”
Governor Maura Healey, alongside other state officials, visited the flags ahead of Memorial Day to honor fallen service members. “What makes this memorial so meaningful is that it’s built by people showing up, year after year, to remember. A simple act of love and gratitude that, together, becomes something even more powerful,” said Governor Maura Healey in a social media post. People walking around the historic park stopped to remember those who served and gave their lives for their country. “I know a lot of people [who served], people I graduated with were in the Vietnam War,” Elizabeth Kingsley said. “My late father served in World War II. I am active with Home Base and a couple of other veteran organizations to honor his memory,” Ed Scheinbart said. Doug Dell served in Vietnam and said Memorial Day has a deep meaning for him. He said that it took him a while to visit the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument, but now he makes sure he stops by every year.
Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the multitude. So they all ate and were filled, and twelve baskets of the leftover fragments were taken up by them. Luke 9:16-17

Thousands of Minnesotans are called to action this Memorial Day weekend, stemming from a simple conversation a decade ago. “We just feel like this is what we’re supposed to be doing on Memorial Day,” said Jill Cooper, a volunteer with Flags for Fort Snelling. Over 2,500 volunteers walk the hundreds of acres of Fort Snelling National Cemetery. “I was on a submarine and having served and lost people, you realize each one of these is a person or two people. These aren’t just symbols. These were people,” said Sean Wait, volunteer and veteran. It’s an annual tradition recognizing those people who served us. It started in 2015 with one mastermind who inquired with the cemetery and had a fraction of the volunteers she has now, to help her place the flags.
“For me, it’s very humbling, bringing it back to ‘this is what matters,'” said Joanne Malmstedt, president and founder of Flags for Fort Snelling. “I feel like so much of the younger generations have lost the importance of what all of this means.” Throughout the weekend, volunteers are placing roughly 195,000 flags to cover every headstone at Fort Snelling. Organizers told WCCO they’re still looking for those to help them collect the flags on Saturday. “It’s just really impactful when you look around, and you see and think, how many cemeteries there are around the country,” said Wait. Flags for Fort Snelling is a registered 501C3. “I don’t collect a penny from this. Nobody gets a paycheck from this. Every penny that we receive goes right back to making sure these veterans can be honored and remembered from year to year,” said Malmstedt. “A promise was made to never forget so we need to make sure that’s upheld and remembered.”

California firefighters made cautious progress during an all-night operation Sunday to test the pressure inside a cracked tank at the center of a toxic chemical leak in Orange County, officials told CBS News, as more than 50,000 people remain under evacuation orders. In an incident update posted on X, Orange County Fire Authority Interim Chief TJ McGovern said that crews would conduct the mission overnight to confirm that the “BLEVE threat,” or Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion, was eliminated. “The BLEVE threat is the worst-case catastrophic event that we’ve been talking about. We are not there yet; we need to run this operation tonight,” McGovern said. “The worst-case scenario is still possible.” He said that an update in the morning would reveal the results of the overnight tank inspection to determine if pressure was released or if there was a vapor buildup inside the tank.
As of 6:40 a.m. local time Monday, OCFA has not offered an update on the status of the operation. In an earlier post, McGovern said that crews discovered a crack in the tank on Saturday night, which could be due to a pressure release. He said that it could alter the strategy as crews search for a solution to the crisis. “With this new information, it could change our trajectory and our strategy to this event,” he said at the time. “Last night was a successful operation for this emerging incident.” The Orange County Fire Authority told CBS LA on Sunday evening that multiple cracks existed in the tank. But in a post to X later that night, the agency qualified those reports, saying: “To clarify, there is one known crack on the tank. There is also peeling of weather stripping on the exterior, but this is not an additional crack.”

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13
Today, we honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice purchased freedoms we often take for granted, and their courage will never be forgotten. On this Memorial Day, may we pause with gratitude, reflect with humility, and cherish the legacy of those who stood for something greater than themselves. To every fallen hero and every family carrying the weight of loss, thank you. Your sacrifice echoes through generations, and your memory lives on in the heart of a grateful nation.

In Gilmer County, at the foot of Georgia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, fourth-generation farmer Joshua Aaron is worried about the upcoming fall apple season. Aaron’s great-grandparents started Aaron Family Orchards decades ago, so he’s seen a lot of times, both good and bad. But during the midst of the state’s months-long drought, the future is beginning to look bleak. Apple orchards are feeling the heat, and it’s already showing signs of impacting the upcoming harvest season. In Ellijay, known as the Apple Capital of Georgia, the air is fresh, and the skies are blue, but those blue skies have been around for far too long and are now leading to growing problems at Aaron Family Orchards.
“Whether it be U-pick or going to schools or here in the market, we’re really watching how much rainfall we’re getting to make sure that we’re not going to have a large crop fall or have some kind of delay or hindrance in size of the crop,” Aaron said. Meanwhile, the apples are just beginning to pop up on the trees, but so is anxiety in the voices of local orchard owners like Aaron. “Luckily in North Georgia, we’ve actually gotten a little bit of rain, a lot more than the rest of the state, but even with the rain that we’ve gotten, we’re still in a severe drought,” Aaron explained. While it could be even worse, the impacts of the deepening drought are starting to show. As the trees shield themselves from additional drying under the searing summer sun, curled-up leaves are beginning to appear as the added stress builds.
Just like with humans, when the trees are under stress, they’re more susceptible to disease. Over time, bacteria can get into their blooms. That can kill an entire branch and possibly even the whole tree.

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad (C&TS), originally scheduled to open its 2026 season on Saturday, announced earlier this week that it will postpone operations due to severe drought conditions and elevated wildfire danger across the region. C&TS management held an emergency meeting and voted to postpone opening until June 9. Management will conduct a review on June 2 to determine if condition are safe to operate and keep that date for opening, the rail road stated in a press release. “With deep respect for the land, forests, and communities where we operate, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad Commission made the difficult decision to delay the start of our season,” said Mark Graybill, Colorado Commissioner of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad Commission.
Guests holding reservations for affected departures have been contacted directly by the railroad’s reservations department. Passengers were offered the choice of either a full refund or rebooking on a later departure date. Railroad officials emphasized that the decision was made proactively in response to evolving regional conditions. “This was a difficult decision because the railroad is vital to the Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico economies and our mission is to preserve and share this important part of history,” said Eric Mason, CEO of the C&TS. “We are committed to operating responsibly and safely within the remarkable landscape we have called home since 1880. We thank our passengers for their understanding and hope they will visit us when we resume normal operations.” Another railroad tour, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, began operations in early May on schedule.
The D&SNGR settled a federal lawsuit four years ago and agreed to pay $20 million in damages following the 416 Fire near Durango in 2018. While an investigation found the fire started near the railroad’s tracks, the railroad denied and continues to deny that it caused the 416 Fire.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom proclaimed a state of emergency in Orange County on Saturday as officials desperately search for a safe resolution to a leaking toxic chemical tank at an aerospace facility. “The safety of Orange County residents is the top priority,” Newsom said. “We are mobilizing every state resource available to support local responders and make sure the community has what they need to stay safe.” Orange County Fire Authority Incident Commander and Division Chief Craig Covey said that temperatures inside the tank continue to rise, creating a “significantly dangerous” situation spurring the evacuation of more than 50,000 residents, officials said.
It was previously believed that the temperatures were cooling inside the Garden Grove industrial tank, at GKN Aerospace, estimated to contain 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate. However, after crews embarked on a risky operation inside the danger zone, they learned temperatures were increasing at a rate of about one degree per hour. It was at 90 degrees on Friday night after starting the day at 77. “We did put people in harm’s way last night … with an attempt to go in and neutralize the additional tank,” Covey said in a video posted to X on Saturday, explaining that crews entered the zone in an attempt to ensure an additional tank near the leaking tank was stable. As the situation continued developing on Saturday, Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer announced that his office had launched an investigation into the cause of the tank’s failure, asking whistleblowers in the community to come forward with information.

New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill on Wednesday declared a state of emergency because freezing temperatures this spring damaged crops at local farms. Farmers in the Garden State experienced significant crop loss during the freezing temperatures from April 19 to April 22, an announcement from the governor’s office says. More than 30% of crops were damaged in some parts of the state, according to research conducted by the New Jersey Department of Agriculture and Farm Service Agency county committees. Some growers estimate they will lose 100% of the harvest for certain crops, the announcement says.
Sherrill has also asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture for a disaster designation, which would unlock federal relief dollars for farmers in need. The freezing temperatures followed two days of unseasonably warm weather, which caused fruit trees and other crops to enter the flowering stage, the executive order declaring the emergency says. The affected crops include peaches, cherries, pears, grapes, plums, strawberries, blueberries, barley and apples, it says. The statewide declaration “enacts sweeping interagency coordination focused on alleviating further financial losses for those impacted, while underscoring the need for federal support,” the announcement says.

A Harford County man who was serving prison time for killing his niece in 2013 was found unconscious in his cell in Washington County, and later died, according to the Maryland State Police. Colin Wolf, 32 of Bel Air, Maryland, was serving a 30-year sentence after he pleaded guilty to the first-degree murder of two-month-old Aubree Roberts. Investigation into an inmate’s death in a jail cell On Wednesday, May 20, Wolf was found unresponsive in his prison cell at the Roxbury Correctional Institution in Hagerstown, Maryland. He was then pronounced dead by emergency medical personnel. Wolf was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death. Investigators believe Wolf’s cellmate was in the cell at the time of Wolf’s death.
Homicide investigators were called to investigate. Wolf was sentenced for his niece’s murder In 2015, Wolf was sentenced to life in prison, with all but 30 years suspended, for the murder of his 2-month-old niece in Forest Hills, Maryland. In April 2013, Harford County sheriff’s deputies said paramedics were called to a home and found the seriously injured infant. The child was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, where the baby was pronounced dead. Investigators said Wolf was left alone with his niece in April 2013, and that he was angry with his sister for having the baby with her boyfriend, whom Wolf did not like. Police said he sprayed cologne in the baby’s mouth then punched her in the face, resulting in brain hemorrhage.

An Air France flight from Paris to Detroit was forced to divert to Montreal on Wednesday due to U.S. flight restrictions linked to the Ebola outbreak after it was determined that one of the passengers was from the Democratic Republic of Congo, federal officials and the airline said. Air France boarded the passenger “in error on a flight to the United States,” a U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesperson told CBS News in a statement. “Due to entry restrictions put in place to reduce the risk of the Ebola virus, the passenger should not have boarded the plane,” the CBP spokesperson said. “CBP took decisive action and prohibited the flight carrying that traveler from landing at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, and instead, diverted to Montreal, Canada.” CBP did not say when the person had last been in the Congo or whether they were showing symptoms of the virus.
When reached about the incident, the Federal Aviation Administration directed CBS News to CBP. CBS News has also reached out to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for comment. Air France said in a statement to CBS News that it “confirms that, at the request of U.S. authorities, (the flight) was diverted to Montreal Airport after a Congolese passenger on board was denied entry into the United States. In fact, under new regulations, passengers arriving from certain countries, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, may only enter U.S. territory via Washington (IAD) Airport. There was no medical emergency on board, and like all airlines, Air France is required to comply with the entry requirements of the countries it serves.”
According to the flight tracking website FlightAware, Air France Flight 378 from Paris-Charles de Gaulle International Airport landed at Montreal Trudeau International Airport at 5:15 p.m. ET. The status of the passenger from the Congo was unknown. Deborah Mistor, a business class passenger aboard the flight, told CBS News in an interview Thursday night that the rest of the passengers were then flown from Montreal to Detroit aboard the same aircraft. Mistor revealed that the passengers were notified by the captain about four hours before they were initially due to arrive in Detroit that U.S. authorities were not allowing the plane to land in the U.S. and the flight was being diverted. The captain did not provide a reason, however. “I think enough people must have been questioning what was going on because 30 minutes later, he came back on and said that he wanted to confirm that there was nothing wrong with the plane, there were no technical difficulties, that it was strictly because of U.S. authorities not allowing us to land in the U.S.,” Mistor told CBS News.

A wildfire roaring about 10 miles east of Breezy Point, Minnesota, has grown to over 1,600 acres, officials said in a Tuesday morning update. According to the Minnesota Incident Command System, the Flanders Fire is now nearly 60% contained. Crews have been working since the weekend to contain the flames. The Department of Natural Resources said Tuesday that it has found the origin of the fire and identified “people of interest.” County Road 11, which was closed between Cross Lake and State Highway 6 is now reopened. However officials are asking that the public avoid the general area unless absolutely necessary. Evacuation orders will be lifted at noon and residents will be permitted to return to their homes. Roughly 140 crew members have been assessing hazardous trees and tempering hot spots.
The Crow Wing County sheriff’s drone team was also able to launch drones in order to better map the flames from the air. Officials announced Monday evening that the other major wildfire from over the weekend, near Two Harbors, has been completely contained. At least 34 structures were lost in the 356-acre wildfire. Gov. Tim Walz toured the damage on Monday. “These fires have disrupted communities and forced evacuations, but the coordinated response across local, state, and federal partners has made a real difference,” he said.

A fire that originated in the Santa Ana River bed in Riverside County on Tuesday morning has injured multiple people and prompted evacuations, authorities said. According to Cal Fire, the blaze, dubbed the Bain Fire, started sometime before 11:30 a.m. near Bain Street and Limonite Avenue in the Mira Loma neighborhood of Jurupa Valley. The fire burned at least 250 acres as of 2:15 p.m. and was “burning in heavy fuels with a moderate rate of spread,” Cal Fire said. As of 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Cal Fire said that the fire had consumed 1,456 acres and that containment was at 25%.
Firefighters also said that some structures had been burned, but that they weren’t able to confirm if they were outbuildings or other primary buildings. “Air and ground resources will remain on scene overnight, working diligently to build containment lines around the perimeter of the fire. Air resources will also be assigned throughout the evening, dropping water and retardant,” Cal Fire officials said in their final evening update on Tuesday. A total of 100 personnel were assigned to the fire, as well as two helicopters and 22 engines, along with assistance from Cal Fire San Bernardino and San Diego crews and the Ontario and Riverside Fire departments.

Opposition leaders in the Bahamas are demanding an investigation into a suspected drug trafficker who survived a recent plane crash near Florida and was allegedly found with roughly $30,000, according to a U.S. federal agent. The money was inside a bag labeled with the name of an unidentified high-ranking politician from the archipelago.
The suspect, who was deported to the Bahamas more than a decade ago after being convicted on drug and money laundering charges, is accused of trafficking cocaine through the Bahamas to the U.S.
He also is accused of meeting the unnamed politician in October 2024 at the Bahamian Parliament in Nassau to talk about a deal involving some 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds) of cocaine, according to a court document filed May 14 in the Southern District of New York, a day after the plane crash. It stated that the politician “could provide security for the planned cocaine shipment” and was introduced to an unnamed suspect as a “future associate.”
The allegations are the latest blow to the Bahamas, whose police commissioner resigned in December 2024 after a sergeant and two officers were indicted in what the U.S. Justice Department at the time called “a massive cocaine conspiracy enabled by corrupt Bahamian government officials.”
“Since at least May 2021, drug traffickers have smuggled tons of cocaine through The Bahamas for importation into the U.S. with the help and support of corrupt Bahamian government officials,” the Justice Department said in 2024 when announcing charges against the chief superintendent of the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
Michael Pintard, leader of the opposition Free National Movement party, claimed Monday that he does not believe the Bahamas’ prime minister, who secured reelection the day of the plane crash, will hold anyone accountable.
“We issued warnings about the close relationship between members of this administration and characters of interest to police locally and internationally,” he told reporters.
Latrae Rahming, spokesman for the office of the prime minister, shared a statement with The Associated Press on Tuesday noting that the government is taking the matter “extremely seriously.” It stated that local law enforcement will launch its own inquiry and that the government will reach out to U.S. officials to seek the sharing of information and obtain any available evidence, adding that it has received no official information identifying any public official related to the case.

Several municipalities in the Twin Cities metro area are considering a program that would make drones first responders, essentially sending a camera in the sky to 911 calls ahead of police and firefighters. The Edina Police Department just concluded a two-week trial period and the Bloomington Police Department started testing drones soon after. “[The drones] can go out there and be there before we have to put actual humans on the ground,” said Damon Bitney, Bloomington’s assistant police chief. Bitney sees this technology as a way to keep first responders safer, while improving response times and tracking down suspects. “If we don’t have to send cars, that means that’s less cars that are going lights and sirens to calls,” Bitney said. “
It also means that if someone’s trying to hide or do something, or there’s a significant incident, that we can have, hopefully, have eyes on to see where those people might be.” While the drones are in the air responding, police officers are monitoring the camera feed and location from the station. It allows them to send out real-time information and, Bitney hopes, to deploy resources more effectively. Sgt. Jason Behr from the Edina Police Department said speed is also a metric his officers are taking a closer look at. “When you call 911, you wanted them there five minutes ago, not 10 minutes from now,” Behr said. “If you can get somebody there faster and provide that overwatch and that insight to the officers, it just helps with public safety.” Behr said over two weeks, the drones responded to a few dozen calls, including assault, theft and a medical emergency. The drone program is already in place at the Minnetonka Police Department.
Since August, police there have logged over 600 flights. A spokesperson for the city said drones were first to the scene 68% of the time and police cleared 18% of calls without sending officers. The program costs about $260,000 a year to operate. The City of Minneapolis is also considering piloting a similar drone program. During a council committee meeting last week, several council members raised issues with privacy and unnecessary surveillance. Council Member LaTrisha Vetaw is backing the pilot program and, during the meeting, praised the way drones could cut down on response times in her district.

First responders had to remove a Tesla Cybertruck from Grapevine Lake late Monday evening, after the Grapevine Police Department said the driver intentionally drove it into the water. Grapevine Police Officers responded to the Katie’s Woods Park boat ramp, located off Katie’s Woods Drive, around 8 p.m. They arrived and found the Cybertruck in the lake near the shoreline. The department said the driver, Jimmy Jack McDaniel, told them he intentionally drove the vehicle into the lake to try and use its “Wade Mode” feature. However, the Cybertruck was disabled and took on water, police said, prompting the driver and a passenger to abandon it. The vehicle was removed with the help of the Grapevine Fire Department’s Water Rescue Team.
Police said McDaniel is charged with operation of a vehicle in a closed section of the lake, not having a valid boat registration and other water safety equipment violations. The department reminds drivers that while a vehicle may be physically capable of entering shallow freshwater areas, doing so could create legal and safety concerns under Texas law. “We wouldn’t encourage willingly driving your vehicle into the water,” said Katharina Gamboa of the Grapevine Police Department. “You know, not only that, it’s a safety concern, but it’s also a legal concern as well.” Gamboa said the city has boating ramps for safely putting your boats or permitted marine vessels into the lake. “We don’t encourage your cars going into the water,” she said. “So, we do prohibit motor vehicles from driving along the lake. It’s a safety issue.” According to Gamboa, Grapevine has a lot of lake goers and people at the beaches of the lake. She said children play on the shoreline, and it’s not safe to have a vehicle driving along that area.

Several students were injured Monday afternoon after a school bus crashed in central Minnesota.
According to the Stearns County Sheriff, the bus crashed along Jay Avenue, south of Highway 23 in Munson Township. Around 3:20 p.m., the bus left the road near the curve and entered a ditch and struck a tree.
There were roughly 30 students of various ages on the bus at the time, the sheriff’s office said. Some sustained minor injuries, primarily cuts and bruises caused by broken windows.
The bus was heavily damaged and was towed from the scene.
The crash is under investigation. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor, according to the sheriff’s office.

Trump-backed Ed Gallrein defeated Rep. Thomas Massie in Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District Republican primary on Tuesday, CBS News has projected. Massie is the latest incumbent Republican to fall in a primary to a challenger endorsed by President Trump, who has successfully targeted a number of Republicans he has deemed his adversaries in recent primaries. Last week, Massie referred to himself as the “main event” on Mr. Trump’s revenge tour. Massie conceded to Gallrein in a speech Tuesday, closing out a primary race that he quipped “went on longer than Vietnam.” Trump allies celebrated Gallrein’s victory. Former Trump 2024 co-campaign manager Chris LaCivita wrote on X that GOP voters “want to know that someone represents their views,” and Massie “failed Republicans on all counts.”
Earlier, LaCivita posted a photo of Mr. Trump showing his middle finger. “Do not ever doubt President Trump and his political power,” White House Communications Director Steven Cheung wrote on social media, likely responding to Massie’s loss. “F*** around, find out.” The race in northern Kentucky was the most expensive House primary in history, with pro-Israel interest groups pumping millions in the contest in a bid to unseat Massie, who has been a thorn in Mr. Trump’s side. In an interview with CBS News on Monday, Massie said spending by pro-Israel interest groups caused more disruption in the race than the president. In a typical year, Massie said he would have won the primary with 80% of the vote. He estimated Mr. Trump’s endorsement of Gallrein lowered his support to 60%, and spending from the pro-Israel lobby further eroded it.

A brush fire burning on Santa Rosa Island has burned more than 10,000 acres in the Channel Islands National Park, according to the U.S. National Park Service. The blaze was reported on Friday afternoon at around 4:20 p.m. between Ford Point and South Point on the southern side of Santa Rosa Island, firefighters said. Within three hours of ignition, Cal Fire officials, who were assisting the National Park Service with tracking the size of the blaze, said that more than 1,200 acres had burned. On Saturday night, the fire was mapped at 5,690 acres and by 4:31 p.m. Sunday, they said it was 10,0029 acres and 0% contained.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. At least 70 firefighters and park rangers were battling the flames, according to NPS officials, who also said that there are no visitors on the island and that flames are being fueled by dense vegetation and strong winds blowing in the area. The National Weather Service issued a Gale Warning for the area, which is expected to remain in place until at least 3 a.m. on Monday. Two historic structures, Johnson’s Lee Equipment Shed and Wreck Line Camp Cabin, were destroyed by the fire, which NPS officials said was a “full-suppression human-caused wildfire.” They further noted that the status of the historic South Point Lighthouse is unknown as fire continued to burn nearby on Sunday afternoon. On Friday, the U.S. Coast Guard officials said that they rescued a 67-year-old man from shore. Santa Rosa Island is one of five islands located off the Southern California coast in the Pacific Ocean.
